Well, the SRG does have its uses. If you have ever seen Eric Lofstrom turn, the peeling cut he uses is very efficient for roughing out spindle blanks. I have never had a Benjamin's Best tool, and never will. Thompson and D Way only in my shop. The winds on the SRG can be used for peeling cuts as well.
Yup, just saying you can do without the SRG. Especially if your primary gig is bowls. If you have a bigger bowl gouge, the difference is minimal. Of course if you’re doing a lot of spindle roughing, get the spindle roughing gouge.
Great video! Years ago I sharpened a couple of Benjamin Best gouges for a friend. They were good. Maybe he just got lucky. On the other hand, I have never been able to get a Thompson gouge as sharp as one made from M2 HHS. They get almost sharp and stay almost sharp for a long time, but I'm not a fan. Maybe it's just me, but I've heard the same from at least one other turner.
I probably should not be so down on Benjamin’s Best. They make it possible for people to buy enough tools to get started. To go out and buy premium tools from the jump would be beyond what many people can do
In your work environment , I'll be surprised if it lasts 2 months.
I tried that carbide one today and I'm pretty comfortable with dangerous stuff and that shit was kicking back on hardwood like a pissed off mule, needless to say I'm gonna trade it out for the coarse grit one.
You couldn't pay me enough to use the carbide tooth disk....Crazy dangerous, stay away!
You sure got some help there with the plasma cutter. :D
These clamps are terrible. Won't clamp tight and slides around. A total waste of money!
It stands for cyanoacrylate. Really good stuff for woodworking, etc. A lot of people also use it for wood model assembly. The accelerant cause it to dry almost instantly.
What is ca glue?
Wow, just wow!
Thanks for this video. Gonna add these to my Christmas list
Dislike. This is a bad technique that will result in a broken tap.
That's a much safer setup than what I usually do with my keys
Interesting. My van automatically unlocks when the fob is near the vehicle so this won't work for all makes but it should for many.
I think the plasma would cut faster but you would need compressor and 220v it's a lot more convenient easy to carry and 120v nice tool nice video
Plasma is not as clean as cold cut metal cutting saws. SO plasma still alot slower when you add up your grinding time
@DharwinMoris Plasma also leaves a bevel whereas the circ saw will give a square edge.
The biggest mistake in this video was not telling viewers that the hole must be the correct size for the tap you want to use. FAIL
Ya right!
I'm pretty sure vice grip brand got bought out and they are all made in China now anyway. I've heard there is a difference between them now and the made in USA ones. I'm not sure because I refuse to buy the new ones. I tend to pick up used ones from flea markets , etc...
Kids, do not tap a thread like this. You will break a tap in a hole.
Fourth, you do not have to back it out all the way...the flutes in the tap break off the thread material you are removing.
Everyone’s a troll, me I’d break the hole with a countersink before starting to tap.
first off, get a real tap handle. Secondly, do it in a drill press. Third, get some tapping fluid
My drill press does not reverse to remove the tap ! So now what ?
Poplar is a hardwood, however it has a low Janka rating of 540. By comparison black walnut has a rating of approximately 1010. Poplar is great for projects you're going to paint as it takes paint very well.
O’Boy ,Spit Is Better Than Nothing,Any Oil Will Work ,But Cutting Oil Is Best ,Don’t Force The Tap ,Put Lubricant On Every Pass ,Happy Tapping !!!
nothing new here
#1 you’re using a T-handle tap wrench for a 1/2” tap. #2 you’re using a cheap tap - pretty sure it’s not a ground tap. #3 no tapping fluid. #4 looks like hole is gloop small - you’re probably trying to cut 80% thread.
For a blind hole, use a spiral flute tap. The chips do not break, but twist back out of the spiral. Looks cool but works very well.
Been using a drill for years even with standard taps just have to reverse to clear chips. Lots of forward and reverse but gets the job done faster and easier than a T handle.
Sorry, your initial tapping technique was/is all wrong. You always turn 1 or 2 turns clockwise, then 1/2 a turn or 1 turn counter-clockwise to break the swarf. No need to remove the tap completely from the workpiece. Basic tapping stuff. This makes sure the swarf is broken into small bits that work their way down the flutes of the tap and out the bottom. Yes a spiral tap will do a quicker job under normal circumstances.
When I'm tapping on the mills I rarely back out, but always do when hand-tapping. Depends on the tap too. Spiral point should not be confused with spiral flute. Lube oils aren't the best. Kero, ATF, and water are better. We want to cool as much as lube, and smoke is a sign of heat absorbed. IMO that's all good.
Really useful video. Thanks for sharing.
That definitely cut really nice. Probably took about as long as an experienced operator using oxy/acet or plasma , but by a saw useable by almost anyone. I am surprised you didn't trip a circuit breaker.
You were flexing!
Very nice. Even little improvements can make a life a bit easier.
Spooning is so much fun!
Thank you
I believe the square drive is sized to be compatible with any 1/4th in. ratchet head
Buff forearms!
That’s a nice table top.
My advice is always to buy the best tools you can afford. Quality pays in the long run , cheap seems to be a waste almost immediately.
I think the rake away is that for basic hand tools Chinese stuff is generally as good at this point as they are coming out of similar manufacturing equipment
Nice weight setup!
I have the red one and it's great for small stumps and tree roots that are growing above ground.
Thanks for the review!
I like the effort of dragging the clamp off in the first test
Neat! I have seen adjustable spoon mules where the head can be raised or lowered to an extent to improve ergonomics, but your solution is very good. The beauty of woodworking is that almost all tools can be modified, particularly if the tool has been made from scratch. Then the intimidating thought that your idea is not as good as the manufacturer's concept is not present. Btw, I really like the octagonal handle on your gouge. Very well done and thank you for sharing. All the best from Scotland.
