Thank you brother! Fortunately I found your video prior to going full blown nuclear! We were taking the tailgate off to load our camper for the first time (2024 Chev LTZ Duramax) when we accidentally let the left side latch catch….no opening was going to happen until we stumbled across your video! Thanks again and God bless, Craig and Laura
Thank you for the video. I’m a Chevy guy & I have one of these trucks, but these power tailgates are a totally unnecessary feature. I really wish they would stop making uncomplicated things complicated.
This was the very first video that came up when I googled my problem, which was exactly like yours, even down to the tailgate open message. Your solution did work perfectly and I do have a hard tonneau cover but was able to pry open enough to get a long open end wrench into it with tailgate up and catch the release wire on one side and then leaving that side wedged open and repeating on other side. No damage to tailgate or cover… this video was a life saver. Also while open I played around with the built in switch that had stopped working months ago and googled that to find that the switch has a factory recall on it… so all good news at the end of the day! Thanks
Thank you so much! Our 2022 Silverado LT has a panel that’s the full tailgate so we had a heck of a time getting that off when it’s closed. Your instructions were golden. It took a while to get it to manually release but it eventually did.
Thanks for this video man. I called 5 dealers none of them had the answer except to bring it in for diagnostic a $180 charge. I needed to hook up to my gooseneck and was heated on the call. Thanks
Glad I ran across this. The button quit working on the tailgate first so I used fob or inside button. Now none work and get the 'tailgate open' message. My tonneau cover is gonna make this tough when I try. Hate to get out a chainsaw ha
Thank You.....This has been driving me nuts and yours is the first video that I found that addressed the issue. I have a bed cover but luckily left the cover unlocked to where I could still get in the bed. Gonna try this when I get home!
This will happen when I'm loaded and can't get out the screws on the panel. But the info is still great, seems like a manual override would be pretty easy to fab, some aftermarket guy will do it because these switches fail. Thanks again!
Great info. On a working unit pressing twice and hold on the second press on keyfob will raise the tailgate btw. Have to keep holding till closed. Same with the button inside the cab.
I have that with a cargo cover and it didn’t work once. It scared the crap out of me because all my tools were locked inside. Fortunately it eventually opened. I asked the dealer about it and they didn’t know. 🤦♂️ Thanks for the info!
This happened to me a week ago. The issue resolved itself after a couple of hours of driving. Wiggled it, I don’t know. I didn’t think to remove the cover. Thanks for the information!!
Did the chiming ever come back? Did you ever get another “tailgate open” message when it wasn’t down? How long has it been since you manually opened the tailgate and it has been functioning 100% as intended? Thank you.
The repair is good as new. The only thing I haven’t done is put some silicone in the two small wee holes in that handle notch to avoid any more water dripping in there.
Thanks for the video. 2019 mine works intermittently and I have a cover so can’t access when cover fully closed. Was just at dealership for something else very pricey and the guy said it would be $200 just to diagnose (no repair) just diagnose I said oh no. Guess I’ll dig into it and come up with something when I get truck back. Need my bed to stay locked if possible. Thanks again
this is info i will take and store away in my brain for if ever needed, thanks. Do you think those rods you pulled out are designed on the electric latches just for this scenario?
Of all of the stupid features ever added to a vehicle, THIS one may be close to being the winner of the "dumbest design ever". Also a leader in the "solving a problem that was never a problem" category.
Mine wouldn’t open. Put it in drive then back to park. Started working. I got suspicious when I got nothing but chimes when trying to activate. Seemed to me it was thinking it wasn’t in park or something. Anyway, worked.
Had mine fail today. Golf clubs locked under tonneau 10 minutes from T time. I called Chevy dealer - no idea on how to help - said to bring it in. After 15 minutes of clicking FOB, Tailgate button and interior button and starting and restarting truck - it finally worked. Now I don't dare to close tonneau. I also had another problem with electric tailgate. In the winter the tonneau cover froze to the tailgate. There is no way to get any leverage without a handle to break the ice between the tailgate and tonneau. Give me a handle!
Thanks for the video. Most knowledgeable one I've seen so far. Mine is doing something a bit different. Mine will release with the button on the back of the tailgate but not with the fob or the button inside the truck. It will not totally latch when I manually lift the tail gate. Any idea on how to reset one that is doing this?
literally just came across this issue tonight... purchased a bunch of totes because i am moving and the totes were just slightly too big for the bed but since plastic bends i was able to still push the tailgate closed... Now the door will not open and unfortunately u have a retrax cover on my bed that has about an inch of ice frozen on it from the weather...
What half brained idiot at GM decided going to an electric tailgate with NO mechanical latch on the outside was a smart idea?! Like cool add the electric stuff but leave the dang old fashioned handle.

I’m glad it helped. I was nearly “nuclear” as well
Same exact thing happened to me !!
Thank you for the video. I’m a Chevy guy & I have one of these trucks, but these power tailgates are a totally unnecessary feature. I really wish they would stop making uncomplicated things complicated.
I guess if you want the power tailgate as an option cool - but at least give us an emergency handle

That was like my worst fear - what if you had a bed cover?!?
Thank You.....This has been driving me nuts and yours is the first video that I found that addressed the issue. I have a bed cover but luckily left the cover unlocked to where I could still get in the bed. Gonna try this when I get home!
I was worried what would happen if I had bought that locking bed cover.
Let me know if it helps

I think I would take a manual handle in a heartbeat
Saved me a trip to my dealership. Took less than 5 min to fix mine with your video. You rock!!!
Hope it works for good now !
something so simple made so complicated
Amen!!
Amen Brother!!

@@BuzzCutsFirewood did you ever try pressing the tailgate button 2 times on the key fob and than holding it down to raise the gate? Did it work?
Thank you!!!!! Been driving me bat shit crazy and haven't had time to get the recall fixed for it!
Glad to help my man
You deserve a medal. Thank you
Thanks! I’ll take a few more subscribers and 2k more watch hours!

I hope that’s all the trouble you have out of it
Did this fix the tailgate issue not locking and dash saying tailgate open?
putting this box and tailgate on a older truck any ideas how to convert the electric tailgate to a manual?
No idea - I would happily go back to a manual release
You are a effing life saver!!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Glad I could help! It's always a pain when these things stop working.
I ordered a new hd 3500 this week...couldnt believe they dont offer a manual tailgate any more...
It’s one of those “upgrades” I would have gladly did without
Very helpful, but i hasnt worked for me. I did this before seeing your video. I'll try it again today
Best of luck!
did it work?
Thanks! It worked and I don't have to go to the dealership
Glad I could help

Great job , keep it in my mind for future.
Hope you don’t need it!
Did you find the pins on each side and pull them together

It’s a frustrating issue!
Mine won’t open too, will this fix it?
I know it will open it. Mine started working after opening it, and then the button went back to working.
Great information. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!! I shall try that tomorrow!
Ill be back to let you know if that was my problem.
Please do!
Appreciate your video thank you
Hope it helps

Not sure - they should hook them up to a regular old fashioned latch!
@@BuzzCutsFirewood but, but, than they could not charge 2K for the tailgate. All bout the dollar dollar bill.
Thanks for info, my problem is not able to close gate w/ power.
Will keep looking.
Ok, best of luck with your truck
You are my hero ❤
Hope it helped
So with a tonneaux cover you are screwed
I guess so
Of all of the stupid features ever added to a vehicle, THIS one may be close to being the winner of the "dumbest design ever". Also a leader in the "solving a problem that was never a problem" category.
All I want is a manual latch!!
Thank you so very much :-)

Hello Sir. This is Cherry from Coverado. Are you interested in working with us to try our Silverado floor mats and help us make a video?
I’ll reach out
@@BuzzCutsFirewood Hi~We also dm your IG.
Thank you for sharing !!
Sure thing hope you get fixed up
Thanks for the vid.
Hope it helps
the key-fob will close it! Click the gate button twice but on the second click hold it down and it will close!
Didn’t work for mine - not button on gate, dash or key fob worked until I got it reset
@@BuzzCutsFirewood i think @allancivitello3771 was talking about after you got it all fixed. That the key fob should raise the tailgate.

Much Thanks Brother! Who was the genius that thought up this 💩4 🧠's setup?!
I’m sure they got promoted!
It will raise it

No clue on that, sounds like a short possibly. Best of luck but I would be at dealer for sure
Got a cover on the back it open then it wouldn’t open I dunno what to do now
I had a little bit of issue until I grabbed both of them simultaneously and pulled them toward each other. Then it popped right open. Best of luck.

Man I hope this helps!
I miss the old tailgate hate what trucks have become you need a dress to drive one now
It’s definitely over complicated
Now if you have a tonneau cover.................
You’d be screwed
Not getting the panel off with a camper and its closed..fuck this new gabage!
Man I was just saying “what if someone had camper or bed cover “!!
@@BuzzCutsFirewood mine just stopping working off the gate button and dash but opened with fob.
Now im scared to close it again.
Getting a service gate message
It failed to power close twice today but worked once.

Crazy!!
Having this issue on the 2024 Chevy Silverado. Such a bad design.
It’s a design flaw for sure
