Behind the Scenes: Gilt Man x Hodinkee

- Back in December 2010, when we decided to launch vintage watches on Gilt Man, there was only one person to call: our friend Ben Clymer, who as founder and editor of HODINKEE.com, who has helped turn on a generation of guys to the appeal of a timeless timepiece. We've since run several curated sales with Ben, and for our latest we asked Mr. C to put together what amounts to a greatest hits collection of collectible watches. Highlights include a early-'60s Speedmaster; a Ref. 1016 Explorer; a late-'60s, meters-first Sub; a '70s-era GMT Ref. 1675 with a Pepsi bezel; a killer Tudor military sub; and a gorgeous Jaeger Le Coultre Memovox. And because all that talk of references and bezels can get pretty geeky pretty fast, our Tyler Thoreson sat down with Mr. Clymer to learn more about what makes each of these watches so covetable and cool. Watch the video here, and shop the sale on Gilt Man Saturday, December 21, at noon ET.

The guy's eXpression @ 3:16 is hilarious!
thumbs up for Hodinkee and Ben Clymer, but "because a rotor, obviously, wouldn't work in zero gravity"
well... the rotor works in zero gravity just a well as it does on the earth's surface because the concept is not based on gravity but inertia.
Exactly. I wonder why people never stop to analyze this point, but rather just insist on perpetuating myths. Its well documented that many Rolex GMTs went to space, because it was "The watch" of many hot shot pilots of the day.
INdeed several automatic rotor watches were flown in space... and so every Hodinkee story has some minor mistakes !!!
the guy looks like a german ss officer
0:15 especially conceived for Edmund Hilary to go up mount Everest ?
standard white dial Oyster Perpetuals were given out for fields trials by many mountaineers, among which John Hunt's May 1953 Mt Everest expedition... capitalised afterwards in clever marketing as "Explorer".
Amazing interview! Ben is a study in great taste!
This video should been called talking watches with hodinkee
Momentum and centifegul force both work in space but that's a mute point because when the speedmaster was tested there were no automatic chronographs anyway.
Rotors work in 0 gravity. Inertia, my friend.
+Jake Bourdeau that's right. nasa thought at the time they would not work in 0 gravity!
How are they just going to have a cyborg host the interview and not talk about?
Talking watches with Benjamin Clymer. Gotta love it.
Man, looking back at this in 2019 and seeing a Pepsi 1675 for $6k is mindboggling...
And the 1016 explorer for 7k, it's at least triple that now!
Cool video!
and Tyler was like : Dude, talk slower in simple English, I'm lost lol
l have that submarine 5513 gilt dial. love it!
This was a great segment! That interviewer was a bit of a creeper... 👀 those eyes.
The Rolex explorer was 3600usd in 2008, 7000usd in 2013 and 10000+ today, its silly prices.
any idea what the iwc ingenieur reference number is?
I have a crush on Ben Clymer
The question of a rotor working in space has been answered. It works. Whether NASA scientists thought it wouldn't I truly wonder. It baffles me that any physicist would ponder it for long. In any event, Dr. Leroy Chiao is on record saying his GMT Master worked flawlessly in space. It's beyond me why seemingly intelligent guys like Ben insist on perpetuating these myths.
the blond guy's eyes are crazy lol
Oh boy how the prices are changed..
Be sure to read Clymer review on my blog before you buy. Please go to *garyreviews. com/clymer-review/* Thanks, Tomas.
I need a box for my 77 1680
Omega speedmaster did not have an automatic chronograph movement in 1969. So it is a mute point about it not working in zero gravity. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaa 😜😆🤣😂😁
i do collect fountain pens besides vintage watches what about yourself any other hobbies besides watches ?
dat jlc.......
