This might be my favorite video on the entire internet...
Teddy Baldassarre Plus Jeremy Clarkson’s on the Ferrari F12!
Book Snake why
I know. I've watched it so many times now I could recite it on stage.
Finally someone said it. This video is what inspired me to start loving watches ❤️
Wow Teddy think they should put you on as a guest, I like your collection a lot. This is outstanding of course, but yours is nice!
does anyone else come back to this video on a regular basis?
Luis Eduardo Bologna It's bloody amazing
YES. this interview is what got me into watches in a serious manner. This video is special to me
so funny you should say that, the more I learn about watches the more I actually understand what he is saying :)
so funny you should say that, the more I learn about watches the more I actually understand what he is saying :)
+Luis Eduardo Bologna lol you hit the nail on the head with that question.
"I clean up dog poop wearing a Patek". That's the life
he's so down to earth and relatable... personally, I use my Bentley to pick up dog poop.
Joe Fishburne the way he said Patek.... "Patik"
I clean my own poop wearing a Rolex GMT. Whats the point?
Are you really this dense? The point is these are high price, intricate and luxury watches but... they do not have to be only used or worn when going out to dinner or formal event. They are to be enjoyed every day and blend in with your lifestyle. They shouldn't restrict you, they should enhance you.
Nah. this is just straight up arrogance. Nothing about enhancing how i clean poop. News flash- you are the dense one.
"Ouhh ..Expensive watches for my classy ass fine dining meal at hollywood boulevard really enhances my taste buds!" u kidding me? There are aviation watches for when i fly, field watches for when i hike, divers watch for when i dive.
My point is. You seem to know very little about watches, based on how you limit your options to dinner watches hahahahaha
"It's excessive in some way, but there is an excessiveness to ambition as well".
I love the way John speaks and thinks!
He speaks to my bones. LOL
Please explain why this is so well said. I don't understand it. It just sounds like pretentious fluff to me. Being excessive doesn't make you ambitious nor brave. Though, I suppose it sounds nice to say to yourself at the moment when you're about to spend a lot of money on an item that is ultimately rather pointless.
I get it in the sense that it's a great thing for a salesperson to say to a customer to make them feel better about an excessive purchase. But I don't see how it actually makes any sense.
I have to add that the logic behind _the pointlessness of explaining something to somebody who doesn't already understand_ also eludes me. I see how it's a convenient thing to say, though.
me too, so smart and smooth
I think John is literally a genius. I’ve never saw a video of him talking that bored me. He should have a podcast
Its ridiculous how many times I've watched this
+Ashton Young was just going to say the same thing. At least once a month I stumble upon it.
Yeah me too! Keep coming back to this video! First time I saw it I didn't have any mechanical watches, second time I had a few vintage Omega's, and now I'm on a Rolex craze, getting my second vintage piece very soon :)
Riisfalch Cars hahaha I have such a similar story. So much more fun to watch when you glance down at your wrist and look at the automatic movement sweeping over the Rolex logo.
***** absolutely! I was thinking about the same thing! We'll see what I have in my collection next time I watch this, hopefully a Patek :D
Riisfalch Cars whew haha for now mine will be a Rolex for my forseeable future... Patek way too far out of my price range! But for your sake I hope you do
Who else comes back here after Talking Watches JM Part 2?
Yep
I come here on a weekly basis. Cheers me up :)
Guilty
I’ve “liked” this video so many times...
Absolutely. This is the talking watches that started it all. I come back here all the time for inspiration. This conversation reminds me of what collecting is all about.
This is my comfort youtube video. Every couple of months, I come back to it. There is something incredibly beautiful about the way John articulates his points.❤
It's because it resonates with all of us...
@@patrickhennessy6531it’s also a gift of his that not everyone has…
Good to be back here
"This is a watch, if you wore to dinner, it's invisible to people unless you know what it is - those are my favorite watches"
@@tommynguyen9238 Hodinkee has never seemed fond of Grand Seiko. Even when Daniel Dae Kim was talking about his GS, they zipped right passed that.
I have a pair of Calatrava’s like that - nobody ever says poop
ALS in a nutshell
Pint Thereof 5970: as good as it may ever get.. Meet the Lange Datograph
Randall Janssens I love the Saxiona moon phase at the moment
You at hodinkee shoud do a Part II with John Mayer
+Johnny Person I'm on board with that!!
+Johnny Person I'm your first signature. This is by far my favorite Hodinkee video.
Yes!
Please god, that would be so awesome👍👍
And III and IV, let the guy talk about what ever.
It's so nice not seeing diamonds all over them.
Says nobody that finds a watch.....
Ah but Diamonds on the inside. You’ll hear about that in 2
I come back here every time I feel stressed out. The way they speak passionately about watches makes you feel like you can get happiness from a lot of corners of life...
Still my favorite 'Talking Watches' episode to date.
same
Things that I picked up on after watching this again, years after seeing it for the first time:
1. The "45 on the back" of that Datograph was the price, $45k
2. This must have been early enough that the "Batman" nickname hadn't been cemented yet
3. An IWC diver, to John Mayer, is the "Ford Focus" in his collection of "Ferraris"
"I clean dog poop wearing a Patek." What a fuckin boss.
"I clean up dog poop wearing Patek" is the flex of the century
date : 11/04/2023.... I am back again watching this episode for the 90th time.
same lol
Good times
Nice interview with a nice bloke. It's great that John Mayer doesn't brag / show off, but exudes his love and appreciation for well made time timepieces that have stood the test of time with regard to design.
I could just sit beside him, and listen to him talking all day without getting bored.
I love this episode. I come back to it on a regular basis. The feels this gives me man. No one has put this passion into words as well as John.
I am watching it over and over again. My favorite episode of all time for sure.
The vibe hits different!
I TOTALLY get it!! I've been collecting watches for close to 40 years. My father was a postman in the 'Jewelry District' in NYC for 23 years. He was constantly bringing home stuff that 'fell off the truck'. At the age of 8, I was walking around with an Omega on my wrist. Watches are a fantastic means of opening a conversation with a stranger. I use that device all the time. More, by complimenting someone's watch, they feel a little better about the day and themselves. Everybody wins....!
I don't think your dad was a postman..
Ming LT yup....in NYC it's "da PostMan with sausage fingers" lol
I laughed so hard at this.
Love ur attitude bro. Wish more people were like you the world would be a better place
Saw your reply in 2019! Thanks
Hearing him talk watches is so joyful-hearing someone so passionate and articulate talk his love
Came back to watch this video here in 2018, and I gotta say, the passion in this conversion about these time pieces John Mayer brought is just lovely to listen in on. Amazing job.
May 2022: Watching this for the 10th time! It truly is one of the best "talking watches" episode. The music, the set, the people...everything is perfect.
John Mayer is fucking awesome
The more videos and interviews I watch about John Mayer, the more I see myself in him. When I get into something, I get into it the same way, I can't stop.
I don’t know why but I always get chills at the end of the video. Really could listen to John talk for hours, it’s amazing.
This man just made my day, his energy when talking about these beautiful watches, and the presenter did a great job just letting John talk.
This remains to this day the purest expression of what it means to love and collect watches. I come back to this video so often.
"This remains **to me** to this day the purest expression..."
Never thought a watch conversation is gonna be that calming
4 years later I'm bumping into this video -- glad I did... really well produced - super cool, thanks!
The passion and love for mechanical watches is felt by every fan who watches this video thank you John and Hodinkee
Clickbait... I didnt see talking watches
"It's the only vintage Daytona you'll ever need"
LOL'd at this part.
This inspired me to start a watch collection. It's going to start with a piece I've been thinking about for years. The Timex Weekender . . . *Chronograph.*
Checking in 5 years on from this comment, did you start that collection?
@@b9d4j19 haha, yes. I’ve got a junghans max bill and an entry level Rolex :) I was being sarcastic in my comment, but I do like watches. No Daytona yet though. :)
I have watched this particular Talking Watches so many times! I love John Mayer's music and you can tell that he genuinely loves Watches. Great episode.
Of the entire series this must be by FAR the best interview for watch geeks. He describes the passion for watches in the best and most disarming way. When I have to explain the watch thing I remember John Mayer's words. So spot on. And the background music, makes the video so easy to watch!!!! Must have watched it like 100 times and will watch it again. And such a great collection!!!!
He worked hard and can afford great watches. Great guy that puts out excellent music and has choice watches. We should all have buddies like that.
Approximately 1 million on that table
yeah approximately
Mmm, more like 560k
more lol 1.5 easily
@kappelmeister123 The 5167a is worth around $30K while the 5970g (the one John is wearing) is worth around $140K
@@445CR Taking into account a celeb owner, verified images of them on stage/tour. Adds some bananas.
I watch this video every year. Always a treat to listen to John Mayer's open and honest passion for watches. He fully admits that when starting to collect, he made the mistakes to recognise the greats. I admire that he buys what he likes (personal wealth aside) but even better connects memories to them, making them more than objects. @Hodinkee a follow up video is long overdue.
"under the radar" haha people may not know you're wearing a Comex sub, but I'm pretty sure they'll always know you're John Mayer
Time to Watch Hahaha literally LOL'D
LOL'D
Time to Watch I'm in the UK and I've never heard of him. Nice watches. Very nice.
Andrew Rogers You made me LOL'D once again.
True haha!
Best talking watches ever.
John is such a great communicator, so interesting listening to him
Probably one of the best if not the best Hodinkee episode and considering how great they all are that says a lot.
I love this series. Watched from the beginning, and got me into reading Hodinkee articles. Keep up the awesome quality, Ben. Keep coming back to this awesome piece.
New respect for John Mayer. You can really tell how passionate he is for these watches and their history. Now that is something I can get on board with, personally.
He doesn’t know shit about the history. He did a quick Google search. The rest are his arrogant opinions
I’ve watched this so many times and it just makes me smile. I’m just a normal dude with a nice watch collection. I’m not rich, I’m not materialistic and I’m not out to flex on anyone and it makes me so happy to see someone with far more means than myself think the same way about a watch I could never afford as I do about my one Rolex explorer or my skx. This is one of my favorite videos of all time. John freakin gets it and I love it!
This video makes me so happy!! The music, the ambiance, the conversation!!!
This video is what really got me into watches. Always come back to it.
Great video. I keep coming back to this and the John Goldberger talking watches episodes. Plus the music in the background of this video sounds like a B-Side for Paradise Valley.
Sound like an early access version of The Theme From The Search For Everything
jesus, i don't even like watches but this was soon exciting to watch, just because john is such an intelligent human being. it's like every interview you see with him is so relaxing, it's like reading a good book.
Im back and watching it again! Just awsome to listen to this guy.
There´s just a great vibe in this video, supported by a beautiful soundtrack
The interview that changed the watch world.
Why do you need a watch? I have an iPhone.
@@nuajlenuma144 its not a watch, its an heirloom. i dont care about the time. Its like diamond earings for a daughter or a watch for a son.
Yes, I have seen it a couple of times. It has been and is refreshing to see the conversation in an environment outside a studio with a lively background. Plus, I agree he is really passionate about watches and in a very positive way.
This is the video that started it all for me. Thanks John and Hodinkee. ❤️
It seems crazy to say without feeling like hyperbole but this video is pretty life changing. John has a way of speaking that ignites/inspires someone like me who is a equal blend of creative and romantic.
Great video. John Mayer helped me dismiss my feelings of materialism from my watch collecting. It's definitely something else for me. Thanks again.
I come back to this video about once a year, and so do you.
I can listen to this like music. John´s voice is so relaxing and satisfying. Legend
I like the whole ambiance of the video. The casual look is great. I am realizing the camera was where a bartender usually stands. A very smart decision to "be at the bar" with these fellas. I like watches as well. One might disagree with certain watch choices. But viva la difference. I think this is a wonderfully made video. Thank you.
The 5970 Patek that John hands over at the end costs north of 130,000 USD.. Talking about not being noticed at a dinner
Tek Phou Except that no one even knows what that watch is. The only way people would know what that watch is is if they asked John and looked up the price at the dinner table. Otherwise its just a watch to everyone else.
+DDWGG1 Yeah, that's one of the things I do like about seeing gold watches in movies. It sticks out like a sore thumb, they may as well be wearing a sign that says "I'M WEARING AN EXPENSIVE WATCH"
But with subtlety a person wearing it wouldn't bother about being noticed or people complimenting them.
It has the same chronograph Lemania as Omega speedmasater for $2500
I kept eyeing this watch the whole video trying to figure out which pateck it was and kept hoping he would mention it so glad he told us.
Well the blue/yelow IWC would probably be 5,000 USD. It was his Casio F91-W. Probably beats 91% of population.
I am captivated and mesmerized by this video. Utterly brilliant
I keep watching this over and over again.
I watch this every year again; the older i become, the more i understand and appreciate what they say 😍
date :02/02/2022 ...here I am watching this beauty of an episode for the 89th time...Thank you Hodinkee
Watch this video countless time, and still going back. What a perfect First Content for "Talking Watches".
Such a great video. I swear i ‘watch’ it almost every year.
It's crazy how inspirational I find it hearing John Mayer geek out on watches. Great video!
still coming back after 6 years
almost 10 years fam
The music in this is incredible and adds so much to the aesthetic and down to earth nature of John, what a guy.
John is a true watch enthusiast. This is one of the best videos among the Talking Watches series. Hodinkee, keep these coming!
this video is what made me start collecting watches. its mostly just entry level watches but im hooked into the hobby now
This video got me into watches. Ive been a huge John Mayer fan for a very long time, and through him I learned that watches are a lot more than just a watch. They're the essential mens accessory, theyre stylish, and they have stories with them (if bought second hand)
***** stop!
It's literally a meet-up to talk about watches. Kinda love that you still hear the customers on the background....and definitely not the first time I've watched this video.
One of my favorite watch videos! I am also a huge John Mayer fan. I own all of his albums and have seen him in concert many times. So cool to see his collection of watches. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks you guys,
I loved that 9:00 minutes. :) It's nice to know there's other people that get it.
Blues, Watches, and a big SRV fan. Pretty sure we're related.
Ryan's Range Report Riiiiiiiight?
Great inspirational ...simple detailed yet very educational interview ......loved it ...tell John to come back with his updated collection!
I stop by to visit this every now and again to see Mr JC Mayer and where the show started
One of the best vids in the series thanks
I watched more than 50 times already. I love when JM is guest of the channel.
Loved the interview great job , and John truly expressed his love as a collector. I don’t know how much he knows about the craftsmanship of Watch making but he knows quite a lot about history and that a mark checked.
This is my favorite watch video so far! I’ve been purging on watch videos too! Such a great explanation of why someone loves their watches.
We're closing in on 10 year anniversary of this video. And i wonder if there's an uncut version of this conversation 🤔
"I clean up dog poop wearing a Patek…"
I love this idea; making it all your own.
Thanks for sharing, John and Benjamin
the music is makes the interview so, enchanting
its 2020 already and still coming back to watch this episode..
Nice collection! And cool video, thanks for putting these together. I'll admit I'm completely ignorant re: John Mayer's music and probably couldn't even identify one of his songs if I heard it (although I'm sure I'd recognize it / heard it before) but it's great seeing the obvious passion for his hobby. And it's inspiring that his career success has allowed him to take his horology addiction to the level he desires. :)
I wear a casio calculator watch.
Because you're a fucking nerd and nobody likes you.
rofl
at least it's not a safe queen!!! ; )
Nothing wrong with those; Serena Williams won one when she won Wimbledon in 2012. She's got an Audemars Piguet now though.
I got two of them. Great lightweight, accurate beater watch that you don’t have to worry about!
What an amazing interview. He just let John speak. Love this video. Please do another!!!
The music alone warms my heart. How awesome would a part 3 be?
"It is excessive in some way, but there is an excessiveness to ambition as well." beautiful quote right there
I love watches , my dad was a watchmaker , and made his living that way , so as a kid I was always around watches , ! I own a rolex Daytona and a presidential .
This man is passionate about watches and it shows by the way he speaks about each of his timepieces. Such a beautiful video 👌🏻
The best episode of talking watches ! I've watched it about 40 times
He's so well spoken
So much respect for this guy. I cannot name a single song of his, but he’s one rich person who I think collects watches for the right reason. Full of class, if he was British he would be the next James Bond.
Would like to see his own watch channel and speaks to other collectors.
Although I do think he needs a casioak in his collection. Just so he knows the feeling of wearing a watch and not reserving any part of his brain to prevent knocking it into something. It is a moment of peace.
This is with no doubt the best "Talking Watches" episode of all. I really love this conversation you had, and what you discussed. By the way, also a huge fan of John Mayer!:)
Everyone talking about how charming, fascinating and comforting this video is, is absolutely correct. Anyone able to recommend other videos with a similar atmosphere?
I am still usually watching this in 2019.
