    • @PropaneWP
      @PropaneWP 7 років тому +1

      Please explain why this is so well said. I don't understand it. It just sounds like pretentious fluff to me. Being excessive doesn't make you ambitious nor brave. Though, I suppose it sounds nice to say to yourself at the moment when you're about to spend a lot of money on an item that is ultimately rather pointless.

    • @PropaneWP
      @PropaneWP 7 років тому +4

      I get it in the sense that it's a great thing for a salesperson to say to a customer to make them feel better about an excessive purchase. But I don't see how it actually makes any sense.
      I have to add that the logic behind _the pointlessness of explaining something to somebody who doesn't already understand_ also eludes me. I see how it's a convenient thing to say, though.

      Are you really this dense? The point is these are high price, intricate and luxury watches but... they do not have to be only used or worn when going out to dinner or formal event. They are to be enjoyed every day and blend in with your lifestyle. They shouldn't restrict you, they should enhance you.

    • @tigerbelly2152

    Things that I picked up on after watching this again, years after seeing it for the first time:
    1. The "45 on the back" of that Datograph was the price, $45k
    2. This must have been early enough that the "Batman" nickname hadn't been cemented yet
    3. An IWC diver, to John Mayer, is the "Ford Focus" in his collection of "Ferraris"

    I TOTALLY get it!! I've been collecting watches for close to 40 years. My father was a postman in the 'Jewelry District' in NYC for 23 years. He was constantly bringing home stuff that 'fell off the truck'. At the age of 8, I was walking around with an Omega on my wrist. Watches are a fantastic means of opening a conversation with a stranger. I use that device all the time. More, by complimenting someone's watch, they feel a little better about the day and themselves. Everybody wins....!

      joe schmo lmao. But what's the official de definition of "watch collector". I've seen this statement before and it's troublesome at the least. It's snobbery. Relax. If anyone who collects more than one timepiece calls themselves a "collector", so be it. They are still consumers moving watches along a given cycle. Breathing life into a mechanical device. Instead of it living a dirt nap existence under a glass display case or worse a frigging safe. Who are we to define a watch guy and who isn't. We need to embrace any form of horological acceptance for our passion to survive and this includes every member we can get into the hobby.

    I watch this video every year. Always a treat to listen to John Mayer's open and honest passion for watches. He fully admits that when starting to collect, he made the mistakes to recognise the greats. I admire that he buys what he likes (personal wealth aside) but even better connects memories to them, making them more than objects. @Hodinkee a follow up video is long overdue.

    Of the entire series this must be by FAR the best interview for watch geeks. He describes the passion for watches in the best and most disarming way. When I have to explain the watch thing I remember John Mayer's words. So spot on. And the background music, makes the video so easy to watch!!!! Must have watched it like 100 times and will watch it again. And such a great collection!!!!

    Nice collection! And cool video, thanks for putting these together. I'll admit I'm completely ignorant re: John Mayer's music and probably couldn't even identify one of his songs if I heard it (although I'm sure I'd recognize it / heard it before) but it's great seeing the obvious passion for his hobby. And it's inspiring that his career success has allowed him to take his horology addiction to the level he desires. :)

    I don't know why I didn't put a like on this Jonh Mayer video the first time I've seen it. Having watched his 2nd Hodinkee interview ( twice ), I realized the great watch collector he is with a clear vision of what he wants and what will be the future collectibles. A true inspiration.

    I appreciated Rolex and had a Daytona when I flew professionally and later acquired a GMT from a bankruptcy. During that decade when I was in LA people were getting killed and robbed for their Rolex brand watches and I decided to move to a different brand that most street level average joe's wouldn't know about and got a Breitling before anyone knew what that was and a Patek and Ulysses Nardin later. But my most favorite watch I wear every day is a Glycine airman Chronograph. Looks nice, I get compliments on it, lowest cost of the bunch and the most underrated watch as watches go.

    As a Panerai wearer (hoping soon to be a Patek wearer), I wonder why he didn't talk about the Luminor Marina sitting right in front of him. He obviously brought it with him... Hodinkee...did you just cut that part out....did Rolex throw you a few bucks to omit the PAM ?

    So much respect for this guy. I cannot name a single song of his, but he’s one rich person who I think collects watches for the right reason. Full of class, if he was British he would be the next James Bond.
    Would like to see his own watch channel and speaks to other collectors.
    Although I do think he needs a casioak in his collection. Just so he knows the feeling of wearing a watch and not reserving any part of his brain to prevent knocking it into something. It is a moment of peace.
