Talking Watches With Gary Shteyngart

- Gary Shteyngart is well known to the HODINKEE community for a reason. He's a watch collector and watch enthusiast, certainly, but he's also a world-famous, award-winning novelist who's written about watches and watch collecting, and about what watches can mean to us in a larger context. He's done so for publications like the New Yorker, in "Confessions Of A Watch Geek," and more recently in his latest novel, Lake Success, which chronicles the journey across America of a man seeking to escape his family, his imploding career, and all the trappings of success that define him - pretty much everything, in fact, except for his small collection of hand-picked wristwatches, which he brings along for a very long, crazy ride.

Nomos and Junghans in a talking watches episode? I never thought I would see the day. Great episode!
it was nice for a change Teddy! This was a good episode indeed!
That Lange tho!
Ahhh... baldass! My favourite youtuber after archieluxury
LEL
I'm glad you noticed Teddy! I was about to link you to this video lol
This is so much better than all of those, "Yeah, I'm rich so I just bought this $80K Patek, and this $40K AP, and this..."
Personally, I think this is best collection in the history of talking watches.
This is the first time I could see myself owning every watch in the episode.
That's what I call a watch collection of a watch lover - unlike the trophy collections of so many rich ppl.
haters gonna hate
scuba453 So true !
alcoholic syndrome
Depends I’m not rich don’t make 100k annually and own 7 rolex 5 sport 1 vintage and one date just two tone. Just patience will get you where u want to be
Possibly the best ever episode. Certainly up there.
Jack was the perfect interviewer for this interviewee.
Luciole Dizerot Wholeheartedly agree.
@@RICHIELUXURY I was talking about personalities, not materialistic properties
Luciole Dizerot I wish they would ban this joker from the comments, it’s obvious he is that odious Antipodean. And I agree, the perfect person to interview him, this is one of my favourite episodes.
RICHIE LUXURY rubbish, what a sad pathetic life one would be leading if that was the case!
@@RICHIELUXURY true, but a higher price doesn't mean a better personality, contrary to what you seem to believe
This particular episode with Gary Shteyngart is my favorite episode of talking watches. As an young collector, truly enjoyed watching it
This might be one of my favorite episodes of talking watches. And going into it, had no idea who Gary was. Nice and diverse collection and very well done interview. I was thoroughly entertained.
HUGE fan of your IG and Podcast, keep up your good work! And hope to see you on Talking Watches somedays.
Great collection
Way better than the standard Rolex/Patek collections
to be fair, he has 2 Rolex, a PP and a Lange and Söhne. And the rest isnt "out there". Very basic but known watch brands.
RICHIE LUXURY Nope
Junghans to Lange and patek. Great collection
An extremely underrated episode and collection, a greatly well thought out but also emotionally weighted collection. Bravo.
Aesthetically, one of my favorite collections on talking watches. Purity and minimalism.
The episode started great...Junghans, Nomos, ALS...but then went down the familiar Rolex and PP route. Thankfully, the references were tastefull and were connected to the entire collection, they were not just "added investiments" or "see what I can get". The Universal Geneve at the end was both a surprise and a delight to see. Great episode if not one of the best in the series.
This guy is a great watch nerd and a smart man! Love his collection 🤙🏻 great choice Hodinkee
As someone who has small wrist and really into small and vintage looking, this is the type of collection I want to grow into. Great episode and I wish Hodinkee are able to find more guests like Gary
Great collection. Very classy. Guy loves every single one of those pieces, and it shows. Best part: HE DOESN'T MENTION VALUE OR INVESTMENT POTENTIAL ONCE!!!
Thank you Gary for showing us your watches and giving us a glimpse of one of your passions.
This is one of my favorite episodes. It’s hard to describe why but I love it.
one of the best episodes and collections ever
Just came back to this episode... it's so relaxed... calms me down and giving me a nice mood. And I think, I need to have a drink right now. 🥃
Great episode. Thank you guys 🤗
Klar das man andere bekannte uhren geeks hier finded :D
Such a strong narrative- you can tell he's a great writer.
Gary is the best! Knowledgeable without being pretentious
Watched this multiple times! Most relatable talking watches yet, My favorite!
Loved this video, his collection is super cool!
This episode brought a smile to my face.
Can't believe I've just founded this video NOW! Very fun to watch these two talking, as witty and knowledgeable as it gets, love it!
I love this whole Talking Watches series, and I think this is the one episode where I like -- or even love -- almost every single watch in the collection. Just awesome.
He is a true Watch Nerd! Love him
Great Talking Watches, as usual! Love that the interviewer let’s the person speak and really let their personality shine through .. Can’t wait for the next one!
One of the best five Talking Watches. Thank you Hodinkee.
This is the collection that matches my tastes closer than any I've seen.
Likewise.
Thinking the same thing.... out of all the videos I’ve watched thus far, this is the first collection I would not a single piece!
This kind of aesthetic is why I'm into watches
This was one of the best episodes of TW yet. Straight to the point, clear focus on the watches, and entertaining.
One of the best Talking Watches of all time.
It’s awesome to hear an enthusiast expressing his emotions on how a particular watch makes him feel, you don’t see that too often.
My sophomore year of college, Gary Shteyngart came to give creative writing workshop sessions to the senior writers. Being a sophomore grappling the basics of creative writing, the best I could do was attend his reading of "Super Sad True Love Story." The writing was like the man: incisive, funny, unadorned, and a tad flippant. Some time later, I came across his New Yorker article discussing his journey into watch collecting and his relationship with Hodinkee. This video feels like the warm hum of finishing a book I've read a dozen times. Thank you
What a lovely collection. Gary is a real stand up and down to earth guy. I especially love how he just injects humour to everything so seamlessly. Truly amazing episode!
One of the best talking watches EVER!!! Loved it!!!
One of my favourite episodes.
‘I want the watch to be about the watch’
Fantastic!
Great video.
So enjoyable! Thank you Jack and Gary!
That was just so great I didn’t want it to end. Kudos to you both for creating such an exceptionally entertaining episode. Thank you.
Thank You Gary And Hodinkee For Sharing you guys started my day with my coffee and my passion of watches
This is such a likeable guy, and its a great interview, nice.
This felt like a watch collection. Unlike many that come across as I have money let me flex and then find reasons to justify. This was intellectual, reflective and humorous..
That was very enjoyable. Thank you for posting.
Best wishes
Best one yet! And I just learned the "country tradition." Something to live by! The expression on his face just before he takes a sip is priceless.
One of the most fascinating interviews to date. Well done!
Such a well spoken person. Great video and a great collection
Awesome sense of humor, superb collection. Much respect.
Fantastic and thoughtful collection. A true watch collector, and not just someone who has expensive watches. Love the Universal Geneve. Love this episode...makes you wanna be there just to talk with him!
Wonderful conversation! I also fell in love the "Magic 4" on the dial of the Max Bill Junghans many, many years ago until I bought one in 2018. And now it really struck me as Gary at 1:35 is mentioning exactly the same admiration for the 4 - we are kind of soul brothers ..... Greetings from Germany
This, my friend, is the best talking watches episode i ever watched. Period.
The connection with other human being. Oh Jack you are the best.
Revisiting this episode...in short, great interview and a wonderful & thoughtful collection
Amazing episode. Great collection and I love how Gary focuses on understated pieces but also a diverse set of brands.
I like this one a lot! Such an obtainable collection that fits this mans style. You have to love and appreciate.
WOW... absolutely spot-on collection. Precisely my taste.
Love this guy! "Lake Success" was a thoroughly enjoyable and easy read.
One of the best "Talking watches" ever.
Fantastic video. Love Gary Shteyngart’s writing and his watch collection. Especially love the last piece, which happens to be the one I just got.
What a great fun video and excellent collection, lovely chap too
This is one of my favourites. Very entertaining!
One of the best and most genuine watch collections.
Loved this episode. Well done all involved!
What a fabulously refined collection from an entertaining man. I earn a living from words too so I loved Gary's terms of expression and literary humour.
Never have I seen a watch collection where I liked every single piece. What a wonderful collection!
Outstanding! Thanks guys.
This has to be one of the best "Talking Watches" episodes to date.
One the best yet... lovely to see the Universal at the end
By far my favourite episode!
how beautiful and elegant this collection is. This is the one talking watch that I actually feel close and familiar to my world...what a taste
This is a simply class collection. Superb choices.
Gary's piece in the New Yorker got me started watch collecting. Very cool. May everyone here live an interesting life in good health.
Please, more guests like Mr. Gary.
that f u energy in the end really touch my heart
Fantastic episode with a wonderful author. Well done!
Neuromancer is one of the most influential science fiction novels of all time. If you havent read it, and you're into Blade Runner / The Matrix, this is the book for you.
My personal favourite collection on Talking Watches.
Great….the conversation is excellent. Something you can watch and watch for next ten or twenty years and discover things in life.
Incredible! Great! Thanks!!!
Lake Success was a good listen. I recommend the audiobook because the two narrators were phenomenal.

This episode epitomizes about half of what I aspire to in life: An upstate Ny country house, a storied watch collection, and a bookshelf full of books.
Really appreciate Gary sharing his collection with us.
Excellent episode. Probably the most understated collection on Talking Watches, but from a very colorful personality. Perfect ending watch too. I enjoyed this one with more laughs than the usual TW. Thank you!
favourite talking watches! Gary is such an interesting collector, writer and human!
Brilliant! Simply brilliant.
Great episode. I really hope more episodes will come.
I remember reading Shteygart's writings, the exact story shown in the beginning of the video. I remember the sentimental feeling in each of his word.
My favourite TW. So distilled and so meaningful. Great taste.
very nice episode... that is a true watch collector.
Just a fantastic video Jack. I love the Talking Watches videos in general, but I think this was the best yet! Gary was delightfully interesting. That Lange Saxonia, 1016 Explorer and vintage GMT. Wow. Classy trio of watches right there and really all you'd ever need. I think I'll pick up one of Gary's books. Any suggestions?
possibly one of my favorite collection on talking watches!
wow he has pulled together a heck of a collection in just a few years. great episode
Top chat. That's my kind of collection! 👍
Not being from the states and thereby not knowing the guests most of the time, I have yet to meet someone not interesting and likeable. I truly enjoy this set up.
Please make more of these episodes! They are great! In addition, consider reaching out to athletes or music artists that the youth may actually recognize. Maybe also some 'talking watches' episodes with previous guests to see where their collection has changed.
Not about watch, but about ways of seeing. Great job Hodinkee.
Such a cool collection. I like that albeit a unique and well curated collection that reflects his character, it’s in the realm of affordability of many of your viewers. It allows me to appreciate and aspire when it is a collection that is not orders of magnitude out of reach.
Out of every talking watches episode I have ever watched, this is the collection that fits the most with my personal taste.
Interesting collection, almost all dials very clean and uncluttered.
Finally ..... Waited so long for this ... Please make one episode Daily !!
