This time, the philatelic voyage was both figurative and literal. Tin-can mail is new to my lexicon, and I thoroughly enjoyed the way it was presented here.
Ditto
Glad you enjoyed it, the story really just told itself, super interesting. Thanks for your support 😊
So we've got a hard to access tropical island, which we later find out also doubles up as a volcano, situated in the middle of nowhere within shark infested waters, with ships firing rockets at it and solar eclipses going off... this sounds like the next Indiana Jones adventure, with the added bonus of stamps. Where the hell can I see this movie? ;-) Great video as ever... Tin Can Mail Part 2 has got a lot to live up to
Yep, I believe many actors have turned the part down due to hazardous conditions.... I guess some of us will have to step up and make this movie 😅 lol. Glad you enjoyed it, working on part 2 now.
Some crazy stuff, eh?
@@tedtalksstamps The craziest, I'm off to buy a fedora, a bull whip and head straight to the island :-)
You are like encyclopedia. So many things to learn.
☺️ Thank you Sara, glad you enjoyed it!
Yet another great video! Gonna have to keep my eye out for some tin can mail covers! Excited for next video!
Thanks Mallard! Definitely keep a look out for some tin can mail covers 😊
Thanks for the video! It explained some things for me. I have four Tin Can Mail covers. A Blechdosen Post Tin Can Mail cover from Niuafoou, a Tin Can-Canoe Mail cover from Niuafoou, a Tin Can Mail cover from St. Kilda and a Tin Can Mail Service cover from Rottnest Island (Western Australia).
Oh that is excellent, you already have a variety of the tin can mail covers. I need to check out the Rottnest Island's tin can mail, looks interesting :). Thanks for watching.
this was crazy and i now i think i might go get my self a tin can mail cover
Great!! Its an awesome item to have in your collection 😊
I just bought my first Tonga tin can mail cover! I wouldn’t even have been aware of this if not for you, Graham! So excited!!!
A wonderful video and very interesting subject. Enjoyed the information. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊. Thanks for watching.
I love this channel so much. This episode taught me so much about how creative people are. The pandemic changed all my priorities so I stopped watching UA-cam videos for the most part since Feb 2020. This content is very much worth my time to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Really appreciate this video today... and all your videos past. Thanks for all your efforts!
You are very welcome Ryan 😊. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
can't wait for pt.2!
Working on it!!
Very interesting and informative, Graham.
I can swim for hours, and I would like to do the job if there is no shark...
Thank you Richard!! Ok so no sharks, we will have to enquire but I'm not sure there is a choice 😅. lol Thanks for watching.
very interesting, thanks ... for me I remember seeing on TV Queen Salote of Tonga riding in the Coronation procession of Queen Elizabeth with the hood of her carriage down even though it was raining and almost everyone else had the hoods up obscuring them from view, which resulted in her being quite a celebrity
That is really great memory to have!
Thanks for sharing it 😊
Wow that is a great memory! Everything I looked up about Queen Salote referred to that exact moment, and how she was such a big celeb. Thank you for sharing Caroline!
You have changed philately forever! I'll mention what others I see have already done as well...I went and purchased a Tin Can Mail Cover . So excited to get it. Thanks.
That's wonderful! It is a really cool item to have in your collection, thanks for watching Marcus.
How fantastic! Tin Can mail is amazing, I loved the footage! (not a very good swimmer, and scared of sharks, though I would love to visit the island)
Tin Can Mail IS amazing 😀. Glad you enjoyed the video Karen, thanks for watching!
Great video on a truly interesting philatelic story. I have one Tin Can Mail cover posted in September 1940 to Northern Rhodesia. The cover arrived in May 1941.
Just when i thought i have seen every types of covers there is, you suprised me again. I will try to find them someday 😂😂
Definitely keep a look out for them, they are wonderful pieces of history to add to any collection. Thanks for watching!
Greeeat video! Please please please do a video of rocket mail in the future!
Don't tempt me!
Wow those Tin Can Mail Men were so brave so swim those long distances to send and receive the mail! That is 100% not something I would have been willing to do! I really love the stamps with their Queen, she was so beautiful and the design is so pretty 🥰
I have just discovered your presentations and they are great! i had to go dig around to find the Tin Can cover that has been living in my "Miscellaneous" box. Great fun. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Nyle! Amazing that you had a tin can cover just hanging out in a miscellaneous box! Glad the video prompted you to go find it 😊. Thanks for watching.
It's amazing to learn exciting and interesting new information from every new video of yours. Superb video as usual. 😀😀😀
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for your continued support 😊
This was interesting.
😊 Great! I found it super interesting while reading up about it!
Great episode! very interesting, thanks Graham!
Glad you enjoyed it Raul, thanks for watching!!
Very interesting story about stamps & collecting. Keep up the great stamping!
Will do! Thank you for watching 😊
Hi, excellent video. The stamp club that I am part of here in Goa, India conducted a Tin Can Mail experiment in 2021 to replicate the same in Niuafo'ou. A special cover was also issued for this Tin Can Mail replication.
Fascinating idea - I paused your video at about 5 minutes and went into E-Bay and put a bid in on a piece of tin can mail!!!
Excellent! I hope that you win Joseph, its a wonderful piece of history. Thanks for watching 😊
Wow, what a story, thanks for all that you do!
Also, just ordered a TCCMM cover on eBay!
You are very welcome, more videos to come.
NICE! You are definitely going to enjoy having your own TCCMM cover, its a wonderful piece of history.
Amazing..!!! Graham this is an amazing #Phialtely epsisode many thanks..!
Tin Can Mail Man, wasn't that a character from the Wizard of Oz? More amazing content! Love your work. :)
Lol! glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching. :)
Thank you for the informative and fun video. I would love to see a future video on Rocket Mail and maybe one on Balloon mail. That video of the failed rocket mail in NJ is 👩🍳😘.
One of your BEST videos...!!!!!
Wow, thank you so much! 😊
@@ExploringStamps For sure. I never miss a video of yours, but this one was extra fun!
Excellent episode!
Thanks Louis 😊
What an interesting story! Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it 😊 thank you for watching!
This is another fascinating video, thanks for making it. Can you tell me the name of the organization you mention toward the end that produces questionable stamps for other countries, something like "Stamperia"? "Stamp area"? I can't find it online and I'm growing a bit obsessive about how little information there is out there about IGPC, the company I'd assume you'd be referring to. I guess I understand why serious collectors don't want to even acknowledge that side of things, but as a newcomer, it just seems buried, and feels like I'm on my own to figure out what's a "real" stamp-issuing country these days. (Not that it stops me from buying some of the "wallpaper" that I'm interested in, which I view basically the same as the cinderellas that I also pick up.) Any resources you can point me to would be appreciated, thanks!
Thank you Paul. The company is similar to the IGPC but based in Europe. Stamperija. I briefly talk about them in a #philately episode discussing COVID stamps, as they were trying to cash in on the pandemic with some extremely questionable stamps. Check them out. I plan on discussing them more in upcoming episodes.
@@ExploringStamps Great, thanks so much! I find that to be a fascinating topic. IGPC's facilities are apparently in NJ. If you ever need a "camera crew" to do an episode where you tour their facilities and speak to their head guy, I can drive in from Brooklyn! ;) I've seen him quoted in Linn's a couple of times but it's so under-the-radar in relation to how many countries they rep. I would honestly be fascinated to see how they work. For example, I just picked up two sheets of Jewish painters -- from Mozambique! I really want to know what the conversation was like, with who - the head stamp guy in Mozambique? About why their nation should have Marc Chagall on a stamp, and whether ANY of these sheets have ever made their way to Mozambique, or did they just get to me in Brooklyn straight from NJ -- via Russia (literally where the dealer was)! And what are the stamps that people in Mozambique actually use today? Etc.
Excellent tutorial as usual 😊
Thank you Michael! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
OMG, wonderfully interesting ! Love it !
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊. Thanks for watching.
Have to check it out!
Yess!
Excellent story!
It sure is! Thanks for watching Deborah 😊
Amazing as usual! Searching for tin can covers on Hipstamp now.
Yay! A new proud owner of a tin can cover 😊. Thanks for watching Isabelle.
Wow! Excellent description.. Never heard on that!!
I hadn't heard of it either, such an interesting little story, thanks for watching!
I laughed a lot in this one, well done. Very enjoyable!
😊 glad you enjoyed it.
First Comment! Keep up the great work. Your Channel has been growing incredibly fast and I am loving the vlogs.
😊 Thanks Ken! Glad you are enjoying them.
Amazing.!!!..amazing research work Graham.....so interesting..!!! That this is 100% #philately...!
All my best....(hope I will get an award too😉)
I just ordered a Tin Can - Canoe Island cover!! So excited.
Woohoo!! I'm sure you will love it.
Great video as usual, never heard about this story! Actually I have only one stamp from Tonga, deriving from the desire of my childhood of having at least one from each country of the world :D
😀 I love that idea for a collection, one stamp is all you need then. Thanks Stefano, glad you enjoyed the video.
That's a cool bit of postal history. I'd not heard of it before.
Neither had I until I began researching it. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Entertaining as always Graham, I had no idea they this! You know what they say, the smallest countries always tell the craziest stories 😁👍🇹🇴
They do seem to have some of the best stories. 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved listening and have now subscribed. I have my own blog and will probably write about this one day
Rocket mail!! Sounds like an Elton John song? 😂 Great job on the vid!!! 👍📫
🎶 Rocket Maiilllll, shooting out mail to Niuafo 'ou
😊Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.
Of the various challenges I could choose in life, I think I'll pass on the Tin Can Mailman. Of course I'm not frightened by sharks.....OK, maybe just a little. Another fine presentation that makes philately informative and fun.
Yeah I def would pass on it as well. Thanks Chai, glad you enjoyed it 😊
amazing info thanks for your efforts.
You are very welcome 🙏 thank you for watching Anthony!
Very good and informative video. Make a full video of Stamps of Tonga, it will be very interesting. 🇮🇳🇹🇴
I'd love to! They have issued a number of interesting stamps. Thanks for watching!
Very interesting!
Glad you think so! 😊. Thanks for watching!
Very interesting Graham.
Thanks David!! 😊
This is the fist time I hear about tin can mail. I would love to seek out a tin can mail item. : )
Definitely keep a look out for them, they range in price and can be very affordable. Thanks for watching 😊
Wow, so interesting. Love your videos.
Thank you Connie, glad you like them 😊
I have one Tin Can mail letter from 1938 with the same blue 2 1/2 Penny stamp from "Toga" from August 1938 to South Australia. It has the same cancellations with different languages and a cancel from T.C.C.M. M. man Mr. Quensell. It looks impressive, but it is made for Philatelists. On the other hand I haven´t seen many yet and in Germany they are not well known. I haven´t met someone seeking for the letters. I found this letter in an old album with a lot of other letters from 1880 - 1940 and I´m happy with it besides other letters I found in the album. I don´t know what such a letter is worth, I haven´t seen them on an auction and I haven´t found someone who offers one.
These letters are curious and I´m waiting for your Scotland video. I have never heard of it, that Scotland did domething similar. I´m curious if they have similar special covers.
Thanks for the nice video.
Thank you Oliver, glad to hear that you have a TCCMM cover 😀. As you said, they are definitely philatelic covers made for collectors, but with such an interesting story I definitely think that they will become more appealing over time. They are really cool. Working on the next video now, so stay tuned!
Okay... Here is a question. You have talked about Hindenburg mail covers, Tin Can Mail covers, and others. How does the modern-day Philatelist lookout for unique ways to send mail for collecting? IE: Can I send mail with Space X to the international space station? I can't think of any other ideas because I don't know what options are available to the public. I sure would like to know about more though. Great Video!
That is a great question. There are some unusual mail gimmicks out there to take part in, Club for Future's rocket launch is one: www.clubforfuture.org, and in my previous video I did receive sled dog mail. BUT nothing that stands out to me like Tin can mail or Zeppelin mail. If I think of something I will let you know 🤔
Very interesting video. Really impressed to see even greek on the tin man's envelope 12:19 (on the top).
The Greek letters impressed me as well. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 😊
I have a Tin-Can Mail cover for the 1977 QEII Silver Jubilee, shame I can't post a picture of it. It is later as it has the N on both the cover and 1976, and 1977 Tonga stamps. Its actually trjpple date stamped 25th August 76, 6th February 1977, and 7th February 1977. It is quiet a long narrow brownish cover, with pictures on the left, and an discreption below the picture. It was quiet a rare find I think, interesting to watch your video about it.
I love this story its so true I'm the one who born and raised on this island that's was my grandfather and his brothers are experienced to swim on the very rough water but one more thing i knew for this island
From the history of the story they are no shark attack them in the water I heard that story when I was young I love my mother land unforgettable paradise to me Tin can island niuafoou
I raced to my home office to see if I had any Toga tin can mail. Score...three covers, all post 1934, all philatelic. They were wedged in with other odd mail transport schemes - tin can, dog sled, stage coach, rocket mail etc. 🤷🏾♀️
Whaaatttt?! That is excellent! First I must say that you have some impressive covers as part of your transport collection, tin can is really great one to include, Nice!! Thanks for watching Renee.
Just started watching
Like number 420! Awesome!!
On that envelope of 1937..the top is written in Greek...ΚΑΣΣΙΤΕΡΟΣ [TIN], ΔΟΧΕΙΟΝ[CONTAINER], ΑΚΑΤΙΟΝ[MOTOR BOAT], ΤΑΧΥΔΡΟΜΕΟΝ[POST OFFICE], ΥΔΡΟΔΟΧΕΙΟΝ[WATER CONTAINER],(ΛΕΜΒΟΣ) [SMALL ROWING OR SAILING BOAT]..The question is where did that stamp come from? the only place would be Australia or New Zealand[North Island esp Auckland] as Greeks might have been there.Another great video. There is also to look into 'bottle' mail...but i doubt it that actual stamps were used....
Super video. I happened to have to translate the Tongan Constitution in my own language. Do you know they were the first territory among the Pacific nations to ban slavery?
In any case super interesting story and part of a very complex place with a great history.
I had no idea about that. Such an interesting fact!! Thank you for sharing, and thanks for watching 😀
Off topic from this video but would you ever please consider doing a video about U.S. Federal duck stamps?
Most excellent, sir. I look forward to part 2.
And: No. No. and No. 😄
Thanks Ted, working on part 2 now 😊
Interesting.
Waiting for Rocket Mail story.. Stephen Smith, who was successful in first Rocket Mail parcel in India.
He was commemorated through stamp in India, 1992.
I will have to look him up as well as the stamp. Thank you for sharing 😊
Before this video, what comes to my mind when you refer to a tin can was canned food. Tin can mail, tin can canoe mail and tin can canoe mailman, whew! Was that a tongue twister? :D
Tell me about it, "Tin can canoe mail" tied my tongue up several times while filming 😅. Thanks for watching.
I also have a number of various rocket mail covers not from here though, other countries, that actually went up in the rockets. The different signed cachets quiet interesting, Fire Damage, Water Damage, I have one of each covers, quiet a bit later. I also have a 1933 Gurhard Fellows cover, lots of controversy about him being the inventor of rocket mail though.
Omg My late father told me this story.. he worked at the Tongan post office/ Treasury early 1940s
that’s very interesting! i’m off to eBay to get my own tin can mail cover 🏃
Awesome :-)
Thank you :-)
I enjoyed the video.
Glad to hear that 😊 thanks for watching David!
The Rocket Mail clip looks like a scene from Wile E. Coyote.
Ha! Now that you mention it, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that myself 😂
It was interesting,I have a cover of tin can mail and rocket mail ,and I was thinking actually to contact you for this, we did some transmission of thinking!
This hello from sydney australia
That was you Philippe?!? I was wondering who was hacking into my thoughts, I'm glad you did! Hello in Sydney and thanks for watching. 😊
yay!
Woohoo 🙌
nice video !!!!!!!!
Thank you !! :)
Would I work as a Tin Can carrier? Yes!!
You are too brave! 🦈
Those covers are cool 😎 I definitely wouldn’t fancy that job! 👎🏻
furthermore to my comment, how did they post a package? or did they
Did you receive my "ambulance" mail?
I believe so! Apologies I'm very behind in mail and hoping to catch up during the next week.
curious: any of these "mailmen" get eaten?
There is only mention of the one mailman that got killed by a shark, no mention on if he was eaten though. 🤔
Interesting
