    I'm a UK-based collector, nearer to seventy years of age than sixty, and you are my favourite online philatelist - I'm grateful for the work you do promoting the hobby to a younger and perhaps different generation of collectors...it's not all about what I or my fellow old fogies do...the joy of the hobby has always been that it's what each individual decides to make it...you make up your own rules.
    Congratulations on the award - it's very well deserved, and long may you continue!
    Dave
    PS Yes I agree crash-covers or wreck-covers are always that bit more interesting when accompanied by an "ambulance cover"

      Hello cogidubnus1953!
      I am a philatelist based in India and you would be happy to note that here philately is still very popular with the newer generation. Will be happy to connect with you for exchanging stamps.
      Warm regards and a happy new year!

    I love your perspective on the legitimacy of online philately. The disparagers are elitist and going virtual makes this hobby more inclusive of folks who haven’t had social/institutional access historically.

    Graham, you're the opposite of a gatekeeper--you're someone who talks about something with so much passion and interest that everyone can't resist but to give it a shot! Before I started watching your channel, I thought Philately was just a dusty old hobby for old people whose time has long since passed; now, I know that it's a hobby that can be for anyone, anywhere, and of all ages. Bah and humbug to anyone who tries to say that this isn't Philately. We're having fun, we're learning something new, and we're making the hobby more mainstream. So kudos for your efforts, man! You're well worthy of that recognition!

    I am finally catching up on some long overdue online philatelic content, and I am partly blown away by the comments made by the FIP, but also not completely surprised. As I continue to connect with people on social media who are interested in stamps and other philatelic topics, I'm hopeful for the future of philately. Everyone has to start some where, so even if someone is just sharing a photo of a stamp because they think it's pretty and "Instagramable" does not mean their interests stop there. It also does't mean they won't spark the interest of others. Thank you for standing up for online philately and continuing to provide great PHILATELIC content.

    Congratulations, Graham, on a stellar year! The PTS Award is richly deserved, but the real reward for all of us is in the number of new or existing collectors that you have inspired around the world. So apparently you don’t meet some grumpy-bum’s definition of ‘philately’, but you know the problem with online ‘influencers’? They influence people! And I’m very glad that you’re the one doing the influencing, because attitudes like that correspondent’s are only going to influence people to take up a different hobby. Stay safe, and best of the season to you!

    Philately seems like a dying hobby. With email and online messaging, stamps are on the wayside. Any involvement in stamps is a benefit to philately. Without this channel and without Covid (staying inside a lot more), I would not be collecting stamps and would not be putting money into the USPS. Philately has added to my life in ways I didn't even know. I tell people, this channel has shown me how much you can learn from these random pieces of paper we see on mail. I would also say Graham Beck is a great role model for the philatelist, promoting discourse and not shouting.

    I'm working on some promoting and educational materials for kids. I started collecting as a kid and I'm apalled that no philatelic organisation in my country do anything to even make kids know that philateli exists. So I'm starting my own "grass root" philatelic project (I'm certified teacher and educator, cut off my kid students due to pandemic) and I read some "manifesto" about working with youth. It was "so 50s". There was a statement that "only active members of Polish Union of Philately" can be caretakers of youth philatelic club. In FB groups I read many times that "something is not a real philately". There will be always people who want to decide what is "real" or "right". The Gurdians of The One and Only True Whatever".
    Sad people... I find your channel very inspiring and informative. If that's not a philately then I don't know what is.

    Graham, always enjoy your well-done segments. Interesting that you mentioned storing postcards. I recently bought a couple big vintage collections and have been contemplating how to organize and store them. Am currently sorting into similar categories that you mentioned (birds, animals, holidays, states, photos, etc). Also looking for storage and found some acid free photo boxes (similar to shoe boxes) and will see how that goes. Also ordered some books on postcard collecting, which should have other ideas. Separately, I am also doing Postcrossing and enjoying it after seeing it in one of your videos. You might consider doing a video on organizing and storing postcards. Have a great and safe New Year.

    I watch, and really enjoy, your posts. I am noticing a trend. I am an old fashioned collector and have been collecting for a very long time! It seems that most people like me collect mostly certain countries or areas whereas (always wanted to use that word) the newer collectors are more into thematic collecting. You tend to make videos for both kinds of collectors but I'm wondering if there are many younger collectors out there who are still collecting in the old fashioned way. I have started my own thematic collection lately so I guess I'm trying to change with the times! I collect silver age Marvel comics so I started a collection of comic book character stamps. It's a fun area with quite a few stamps. Congratulations on your reward, you've done a lot to keep the hobby alive!

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you, Joseph! It's always great to see you enjoying the videos. It is an interesting point that you bring up, I think that you might be right about the trend. Maybe there is a perceived level of dedication behind a country, area or time period versus a topic... I can easily say that today I want to start collecting ships on stamps, but to say that I am now collecting pre WW1 France may require a little more preparation, research and thought. I myself am longing to collect a specific area such as that, but I'm still thinking it through while collecting a few topics on the side. I dunno just a thought. Great to hear that you have started a thematic comic book collection, Very cool!

    • @josephwolfe1833
      @josephwolfe1833 3 роки тому +1

      @@ExploringStamps I'm wondering if you really are considering collecting pre-WWII France. I actually considered that myself for a while and did a bit of research. It is a very challenging area indeed, some of the stamps are very very expensive if you want to get a fairly complete collection. Also, identification ranks right up there with early US when you consider the level of difficulty. So, if a challenge is what you want and don't mind spending a great deal of time, it's a great area to consider. My main areas were always US, Canada, Poland and Russia and it was getting to the point where adding to these areas was becoming difficult. I decided to add a few more countries that were interesting and where most additions were affordable. I added Australia and Ireland to the areas I collect and was very happy with my choice. Also some of the African areas have incredibly beautiful stamps, especially Nyassa and The Mozambique Company. You should also check out North Borneo, the earlier engraved stamps are beautiful. Thanks for all your posts, they're always fun!!

    Re Abkhazia - Michel Catalog has now recognized many of the stamps issued by Abkhazia as 'legitimate' - in the Michel monthly catalog update (Rundschau) from August 2020 Michel listed almost 1000 stamps and mini-sheets with official Michel numbers. Over at Colnect these issues have now been listed (see colnect.com/en/stamps/years/country/248-Abkhazia) in the main stamp listings. Great video as always Graham! A great video, again, Graham.
    A remark to the FIP.
    That is an old organization that has a lot to say in the Philatelic world. However they are stuck to the old ways, I would call it old fashioned.
    What they do not realize is that the future of philately is not the old way of collecting and studying stamps. The future will always be the youth, and the future does like the possibilities the new media offers.
    With ignoring that, the FIP shows there is no future for them unless they make a turn.
    I agree with you on the term philately, it is a bit more than just collecting, you give thought to your collection, order it in the way you like and do some studying. FIP sees it as a sort of tittle of honor, where you have to be one of the prize winning exhibitors, so I have the feeling. Well, I won’t stop them but I must say, I don’t like it when people feel they are better than others. We are all equal in my view. So if you have a prize winning collection, or have a collection of common material that gives you great satisfaction to me both collectors have the same importance to the hobby.

    ~ Firstly, I LoLed when the cam - and your silence - zoomed in on the contact lens solution! 😂🤔 Someone was maybe hinting that you need contacts...? 😆🤓 2) Ok, yeahhh if what you’ve been doing isn’t philately, then those who don’t think it is indeed “philately” need to reanalyze the definition of the word! 🤨🙃 Final answer! 🤣 3) I love that you did a shoutout to 2040 peeps and explained today’s (early pandemic’s) tp situation! 😂🧻 You are very thorough, my friend! One thought on chain cards, a resource the USPS offers that is underutilized by younger generations (my 86 year mother on the other hand knows these well) are the double reply postcards the USPS presently sells. What confuses people is they miss that you are sending TWO postcards with postage paid and all you need to do is rip at the crease the other postcard to use and send gratis to you or another person. As an aside, I am surprised retailers starting out don't use these as a way to promote their business by encouraging the receiver to use the attached postage paid card they received with theirs to recommend the business to others. Overall , double reply postcards are a great item and offer some pretty printed stamps. Finally it can convey an added thoughtfulness from the sender that with your birthday, get-well or congratulations message you are giving them a postage-paid postcard, excellent for those you may not be especially close to but stay in contact and enjoy communicating with such as acquaintances and old business colleagues --- and of course philatelists interested in chain cards!

      @@ExploringStamps I will send you one. Also will send a few intaglio stamps from 2018. Decided to buy the mint sheets of the $2 and $1 Statues of Freedom after getting portions of the $1 from a Mint sheet and in separating a $2 Mint sheet a little of the backing to the adhesive came off. The stamps weren't damaged but these stamps look so much better as a sheet. So I think I will send in an envelope the double reply postcard and a few of these intaglio stamps. I am hooked now on engraved/intaglio stamps (along with getting a Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Global stamp for each year). It will provide some ideas for future videos.

    I'm a member of my local stamp club and I love it, but online sales is the source of the bulk of my hobby. If buying and studying stamps online isn't considered philately then I'd like to know where the experts think we should go to do this? There aren't many stamp retail shops open any longer. You can't even go to the post office to buy new commemorative stamps any longer, you have to buy them online.

    You are a philatelist, no doubt. When people stopped going to work, and started staying at home, the toilet paper manufacturers had a problem. Nobody at home wants lousy cheap commercial grade TP, nor do they want 70,000 feet on a roll. So they had to stop making that and start making the home cushy type on smaller home-rolls. We bought out the "normal" supply of home stuff, and it took awhile for manufacturers to retool their lines to catch up with the new balance.

The rest of australia was at home when the "lockdowns" were announced. It was only mid afternoon in Perth. Enough time to go panic shopping. It took 2 to 3 weeks for tp to be freely available. It took 2 months for flour to be available at the supermarket.

    Congratulation on your award, well done and you deserve it. The stupid discussions who is a philatelist is so useless. Everyone, who is interested in stamp collecting and even do it only for fun and not for a study of science is a philatelist. You like stamps and you are collecting them, whatever sort of stamps, letters, postcards and toilet papers you are interested in. Stamp collecting is a hobby and must not be handled serious. We have so many serious things in life, that collecting stamps must not be a part of it.
    By the way: In Germany you have the same with some organisations and a few older collectors always discussing, who is a philatelist. This nonsense is not only American.
    You got some really nice stamps and letters. At the beginning you presented from Australia a block with the first three stamps from New South Wales with a view from Sydney. I was looking a long time to get a stamp from this set and this year I had success and got the 2 Pence blue (OK, it is the cheapest one from the set), but I´m very happy about it. I´m not a specialist of the old Australian stamps (they are simple too expensive for me), but I´m glad that it is possible to get such stamps as well, even if it takes years. This is my main fun: Try to get several stamps you really like and who are not easy to get.
    I like your channel and your content. I wish you merry Christmas and keep healthy.
