    What an incredibly educational episode. Bill was so generous with his knowledge about these British stamps. This interview demonstrates how much one needs to know to ensure that serious collectors purchase wisely; especially if you are involved in auctions with the "big boys"! The other take away for me is just how passionate Bill is and must be to be a successful philatelic dealer. The knowledge he personally has amassed is priceless when seriously collecting high value stamps. I am in awe! For me, and I assume many others involved in this hobby, the artistry of stamps and postal material is the primary attraction and the associated history is second. As a casual collector I just don't have the time to gain the knowledge Bill has since I have other interests as well. But, I respect those with Bill's knowledge and can listen to them talk all day. Thank you Graham for sharing this interview!

    • @ExploringStamps

      😊 So happy that you enjoyed this one, Thanks Gary! I think a lot of us are in awe from Bill's demonstration, the amount of time to become that knowledgable and collect in such a way is amazing. Perhaps one day I will go down that route for my own collection, just not yet. Thanks so much for watching.

    Wow! It is a great, great video! What a magnificent and unmeasurable learning experience. Bill's knowledge and experience are to be gasped at. I would like to sit at his feet, or view from the corner and learn, learn, learn. I will certainly watch this video several times, even though I cannot aspire yet to such a depth of knowledge. I am going to collect GB, but whether I will be able to ever afford even the cheapest of the early Q. Victoria stamps is questionable. This video also illustrated to me the advantage of buying or learning from a knowledgeable dealer and investigating a stamp for purchase physically, in comparison with buying stamps on line. It will be a great loss if the number of these stamp dealers declines to rare! Thanks for the excellent video, Bill, Graham and Laura!

    Thanks for this episode with a ton of information. I don't collect UK stamps, but here is so much stamp general information that we as collectors need. I was at Stampex 2019 and I might go to 2024.

    Enjoyed this video immensely.. Now I've got to look through the envelope of penny reds.. The envelope came from a 90 year old man that had been collected worldwide stamps for over 60 years.. his focus was on stamps of Great Britain,as well as the British commonwealth of nations..

    Great episode and motivates me to take a closer look at my stamps. However, this episodes highlight why I am not ready to die as deep as he is required to do not collect such a series as the Penny reds and blacks, I just don't have the time. But it is immensely helpful in evaluating even common modern US stamps. There are so many vintage MNH or lightly hinge stamps out there in various condition and looking for tears, thins, centering, quality of perfs, and yes suspicious signs of forgeries (this is mainly true of Forever stamps issued the past 10 years) all help a philatelist assemble a nice collection.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Рік тому

      Thank you Chris 😊. Yeah I totally agree. If I was to try this style of collecting (and its quite tempting), I would have to pick a small corner in the philatelic space to collect, it has to be super specific but will likely still be very time consuming. Thanks so much for watching!

    When I look such videos on the old UK stamps, I know that I´m only a small padawan. I´m glad having some main numbers, but from the specialisation I have no knowledge. I know you can specialice them a lot, but here my limits are starting immediatly. It is fascinating, on the other side it will cost you a ton of money if you want to do it. It is the same like collecting the first issues from Austria. In the Ferchenbauer catalogue there are hundreds of sites only for the first issue, like the big book from Stanley Gibbons with the plates and so on. It interests me a lot, but I will never have an important collection on them. Only some nice looking main numbers with gaps here and there. It´s OK, you can´t have everything. Fascinating topic.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  11 місяців тому

      I agree, it is really fascinating to see how such a collection can be put together, but we all have limits in time and money… on one hand I would love to pursue such a detailed and impressive collection, but on the other hand I would be quite okay the the gaps and lack of rarities in my albums. Thanks Oliver, so great to see you enjoyed the video 😊

    Bill is one of the very few dealers I have absolute faith in. He's an incredibly nice guy and has sold me some incredible material. And he forgave me for finding the 1st use of the 1d Red on cover in his stock for a silly price. He was not bitter at all. He just missed it.
    He is utterly honest and if you're selling, he's one of the dealers to go to. I also understand that his own personal collection is something very special.
    And I have a huge collection and I don't have a clue what a lake red looks like.
    I've found several C7 "abnormals" (which they aren't), but never a mint one.
    As for SG 43 plate 77, I suspect that none of the stamps are genuine. Perkins Bacon records state that the plate was destroyed before any stamps were printed. So how can any exist?

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  10 місяців тому

      He really is an incredible dealer and good guy, he is always willing to share his knowledge with anyone that approaches. An interesting theory on plate 77, tat would be a real twist to the story and could very possibly be true. Glad you enjoyed the video 😊. thanks for watching!

    If there's one thing I'll keep in my heart after this episode, it's: "A philatelist uses eyes, tweezers and a magnifying glass", especially the eyes, I think sometimes that look at the stamps is a bit lacking

    I enjoyed every second of this video. It was great to see Bill again in your video. Stanley Gibbons should give Bill a new catalogue 😂
    I have a question: 7:58 What is a reprinted Penny Black? I thought the original plate was taken out to reprint some Penny Blacks, for example, in the 1910s. Would they be considered fake? They are still not cheap.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Рік тому

      😂 SG should totally give him a new book, especially since he gave them such a wonderful shout out!!
      REALLY GOOD question, I actually think that I have more questions about the Penny Blacks now than before making this video! I need to reach out to Bill and find out because I cannot find anything about it online. If anyone else knows about the reprints, please let us know here. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it!

    When,as a dealer,I valued a collection,I would figure the scarce and rare items first. I would figure them at pretty good % of retail. I would low ball the ordinary inexpensive and the faulty items. The reason being is that sorting through,cataloging,stocking etc.inexpensive stuff is very time consuming. Time is $. The best collection that I purchased was a nearly complete,US and Worldwide collection. It ranged from the penny black to 1988. I bought it in 1989. It was about 25% mint and 75% used. The inexpensive to the moderate valued stamps were in top condition. The scarce were about 75% sound. The rare items tended to have small faults but with exceptions. This was not an easy collection to value and it was not easy on my $ either!

    I used to sweat off used stamps and preserve the OG. That’s original gum, not gangster.😂
    Some of my U.S. airmail stamps were canceled with a bi-plane stamp. I think the clerks enjoyed intentionally applying the cancellations upside down.

    Running parallel to philately are CGT free british gold coins, as they do cover the same era(s). Also there is an opportunity to collect silver coins of the same periods (before total debasement in 1946).
    My questions are, does it concern you that stamps have no intrinsic value and in a situation on total economic collapse which may well include hyperinflation or even deflation, as it may be very difficult to reevaluate a stamp collection?
    Example:- from 1837 - 2024, there are well over 200 x 7.23g full sovereigns at current basic gold price of £400 each, some obviously have a numismatic premium that would put a current paper currency value of close to £100,000.
    How much faith do you have valuing ones wealth in debt based currency notes?
