I just mounted a pair of these on my 2017 Kawasaki KLR 650 after the originals wore out at 4,600 miles. Only put about 35 miles on them so far and am very impressed. Not only are they smooth and grippy on pavement but their performance on gravel roads and full off road trails is well above my expectations! Feels like a whole different bike.

I’ve had the Wild on a Tiger 900 and the Anakee Adventure OEM on my new GS. The Adventures were so good on the road. I took them from the dealer straight to Suches, Georgia for 3 days of serious twisties and they were like glue. I was surprised how good they were off-road too. Rocky water crossings and soft dry gravel was surprisingly fine. The only time they crapped out was in the mud, but they had enough grip to get out of the mud by walking besides the bike and being gentle with the throttle. They only lasted 2 months though and I needed to replace them at 3,400 miles. The front and rear wore evenly.
The Wild were so good off-road. Great in mud, sand, or almost everything, and so sticky on the road. The problem with these is how loud they were, and they only lasted 2,000 miles on a Tiger 900, so less on a GS. Since I need a knobbie, I’ve replaced the AA with a Stinko 804/805. Just got back from a Bret Tkacs course in the mud and clay and they were amazing. I took the twisty route there and back and they were so good in the corners. I wasn’t expecting them to be so good. The only complaint is that when the tire is fully leaned over, you can feel a small vibration from the knobs on the edge of the tire, but that’s nitpicking.

@@justthewayitis The course wasn’t fun, but very educational. It’s all slow speed techniques and traction management in very low traction environments. I feel orders of magnitude safer riding solo off-road and will go back again next year. It’s was bloody exhausting and I’m pretty banged up, but can’t recommend it enough.

I put some used ones on my Africa Twin that my Dad had changed a bit too early. Have now got a new set going on next week. Tried them in the twisties at speed, in the rain, over grass and light gravel. Love the road feeling, no noise, and they seem to last quite awhile.

Very informative and well researched video.
I am 9000kms into my first adventure bike ownership and am loving the change from the sport /sport tourer scene. The metzeler tourances that came on my tiger 1200 gt pro have been wearing quite well, but I'm starting to think about the next set of tyres I will choose. I used to run Michelin road 5 and 6's with great satisfaction so I was contemplating fitting them to the Tiger as I don't do much off road riding. The fellow at the bike shop wisely informed me that I only didn't ride off road because I didn't have the right hardware and that would now change.
I think the Anakee adventure sounds perfect for my needs, so hopefully I can continue to enjoy my relationship with Michelin.

Great video as always, I’ve used the Anakee Adventure tyres since they first come out on both Africa Twins 1000-1100 and now my BMW1250GSA I use daily in every weather (15K+ PA), I wholeheartedly agree with your findings, personally I get around 10K+ miles or more on the rear tyres and around -15K on the front to the legal U.K. limit , the bike is in the majority fully loaded, I generally ride it conservatively in town and enthusiastically in the twisty’s I’ve found these the very best tyres for all weather use on every terrain, the only negatives as previously mentioned are slightly noisy on cornering and not that good in deeper mud, to be quite honest if your using a £22K bike off road you either have to be very strong, very wealthy or crazy or perhaps all three!

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  Рік тому

Hi Andy, agreed these are expensive bikes and this and my own lack of skill is the main reason why I don’t go off-road more often. The thought of dropping my bike is always present.

I found the tyre temperatures odd on my '23 GS so glad you mentioned that. After a four hour ride between 2 and 4 deg centigrade and the front was stone cold and the rear was luke warm. Another owner who reviewed his after 8K miles was pleasantly surprised to get full performance right till the end. After half wearing my Bridgestone A41's and Metzeler Tourance Next on my Tiger 1200 the poorly steering front end was most noticeable, leading to disappointingly early changes at the front. Looks like these will avoid that fate.

Great video Carl. Excellent explanation of technologies and changing market demands from bikes/riders.
When we look at large adventure/trail bikes whilst *some* riders take these off the beaten track the vast majority are just a replacement for a sports/touring bike and only used on the road. Its a bit like the big 4x4s/SUVs that never see anything "offroad" more than parking on grass for a school sports day. Essentially both need a road tyre but consumers demand a tyre thats aesthetics fit the 4x4/bike whilst retaining on-road capabilities and thats where the Anakee Adventure fits perfectly :)

My R1250GS came new with Bridgestone A41s, at first they felt good but the front tyre wore very quickly and I lost confidence in the front. The rear tyre was like new at 6,000 miles.
I don't ride off road on the big GS, I have a smaller, lighter, bike for off road. So I replaced the A41s with Michelin Road 6s. The Road 6s are fantastic.

Very good technical, knowledgeable and informative review. I'm 2k UK winter miles into my first GS (1250) after decades on sports tourers. It came fitted with the Bridgestone A41's which have been OK but not confidence inspiring, particularly on the wet muddy/slimy single track country lanes I enjoy exploring in the South Downs. Even on fast, dry country A roads, they or the bike never feels planted. I'm not sure if it is the tires or the Paralever front end but there is a vagueness about the grip levels. That said, in the dry they have maintained grip and I'm getting used to the GS which is a wonderful bike to explore and tour on in my late 60's. Off to the Alps in May and Normandy in June, still deciding on the rest of the year and what tires to fit next.

I learned a lot here Carl. Tyres seem to be very much a matter of personal needs and choice particularly on the GS. My first GS came with Anakee 3 and whilst they were not completely horrible they were noisy and squared off really quickly and were shot at less than 4K miles. I tried Mutants which are a superb tyre for winter riding but again only 4K. I am now on my second set of Road 6s and they are the best tyres I have used to date by some margin. 6K for the first set which is impressive on my local Scottish Highland back roads which are like 40 grit sandpaper. There is no legal offroading in Scotland without the landowners permission so a pure road tyre is all I need.
I have just taken delivery of a new GS and had a set fitted from the off as it came with Bridgestone A41 Adv which dont get much love in my part of the world given the conditions.

Thanks for another interesting video Carl. Just changed the original Anakee Adventures on my GSA after 15 months and 6500 miles. Funnily enough my wear pattern was the opposite of yours - rear was shot, front had about 3-4mm left. I came from an S1000R fitted with Road 5's which are superb tyres though my last two rears have both died prematurely through punctures - maybe just coincidence. My thoughts on the Anakees. First tyre I've ever really been aware of road noise - not unbearable but definitely very noticeable. Grip has been good wet or dry (I ride year round unless snow/ice present). The feeling of falling off the edge of the tyre I have found occurs at angles much less than the 45+ degrees you describe and it has really killed my confidence in the tyres, especially in the tight, twisty, lower speed bends. I have also found them to be very prone to tracking white lines, over banding etc. So all in all I really don't like them. I have now fitted Conti Trail Attack 3's to the bike and they have completely transformed it. Had a 200 mile ride today and was throwing the bike about as if I was back on my S1000. I don't plan on doing any off road but wanted to retain a limited ability to do so as when touring abroad you never know when you may inadvertently end up on a gravel track. Otherwise I would have gone Road 6's.

This just helps confirm that I made the right choice fitting the Adventures on my GSA. I've been quite happy with them this past year. They're not noisy when upright, but as soon as you lean a bit they make themselves known. But I can ride pretty enthusiastically and they grip very well, and for the dry weather offroading I do, they've been fine. I did test another bike with blocky tires like the Wild and couldn't stand them in road. Incredibly noisy in all situations and the handling was quite squidgy. I'll get the Adventure again.

Great video. I've enjoyed the stock tires on my GSA. They have performed very well on road for the riding I do. I dont do any off-road riding. I've thought about putting some Pirelli's on. Had some Diablos on a ZX-10 and those tires stuck no matter the road condition...they also picked up nails and tacks quite often. Never wore one out always had to replace because of a puncture.

Hi Carl, interesting and informative video as per usual. Tyres must present a marketing nightmare for manufacturers.....
The normal forum talk, and my experience with various GSA tyres, has been that of squaring off: You mentioned 45 degree lean angle and the falling in feel. This sounds similar to the squaring off squirelly feeling?
Noise of the A41s that I recently used was vary dependent on temperature and certain road surfaces. The rear lasted 11,000 miles, the fronts 5000 miles. My previous Anakees were noisy all of the time but squared off after 5000 miles replaced with Tourance Nexts...then I sold that bike so no long term report on those. This season I am trying Road 6s but have been a bit reluctant to leave the 80/20 scene just in case I have to transit an unsurfaced pub car park! Mind you some of the roads I encountered in Romania last year ranged from goat tracks to cobbled county lanes and the A41s were fine.

What happened about the damage to the drive shaft and your appointment with the dealer? Did it get resolved to your satisfaction or are you still waiting .
Currently mine don’t look squared off and they have dropped into corners after 45 * since day one, it’s after that point that I can’t really feel what’s going on at the contact point/patch but I hope the next set will be better.

I really love the way you explain it all and the clear communication. Keep it up! Love those video;s, ps one of them helped me installing the new Weisser lights. They are fantastic! For my GS1250 i am looking for new tyres. The Conti’s Trail Attack 3 mounted now, are on 14500km and may go for another 2k but than need replacement. I am now ready for a more sporty, road orientaded tyre who gives the GS that twisty and great character in corners. I do not do off road, year, some paved roads, but no mud etc. What would you advice? The Michelin Road 6 or Road Anakee? Of maybe the Pirelli, Scorpion Trail II (heard the 3 is out already) or the Angele GT 2? I am no Valentino Rossi, but like sporty driving within my limites, so angles in corners vary from 35-46% depends on the situation. ANd yes i drive sometimes long drives on highway and in all weather conditions. Just back from Austria and did 2500km in 5 days. My capabilities are, i am a very experienced driver who loves those twisty and grreat corners, like to flip the bike from left to right and accalerate out the roundabouts and some corners. But also like to chill out and drive easy and with the flow. Hope you can you share some thougts and advice here. Cheers and thanks a lot! Rob (the Netherlands)

Hi Rob, all the tyres you mention are good, its a difficult decision you have to make. I am currently using the Metzeler NT2 which I really like and perform very well up to 50 deg of lean after that the foot pegs scrape, so for performance in the curves they have been great. The other tyre that you might like is the new Pirelli Scorpion Trail 3 (I have not tried this yet) but the ST2 is my favourite tyre from the last 5 years so i would think the new ST3 would be even better. Let me know which tyre you decide to fit on your GS.
Ps: The Road 6 is also a very nice tyre, i really liked the Road 5.

I have this tire on the rear of my VStrom 650. I ride daily and live down 3km of dusty rutted twisty gravel road in Australia. Obviously I know every twist and turn of my road so can push things to the limit. I agree with your assessment in general but would add a little. Grip on the loose surface gravel on the center of the tire is poor, to be expected, just look at it. It’s predictable, sliding around, but poor. However, tip the bike over so that the side of the tire can grip and the traction is very good. Completely different, miles better. So that’s exactly what I do. I ride the edge of it and she will go around corners on rails, kinda 😅. I think that I will put them on again because I have a very specific need of loose gravel and tarmac on every single ride. The only other option I would consider is the Dunlop mutants. I’d have to slow down a bit on the corners and the additional, get out of jail, grip wouldn’t be there, which might result in a dropped bike. Decisions decisions 🤔. 😊

I currently have road trail 5's fitted. I have a new front tyre ready to fit in about 500 miles but I can't source a new road trail 5 rear tyre. Do you think it will be ok to mix road trail 5's on the front with road 6 on the rear?
    The bike is a 2019 1250 GS.

@Just The Way It Is Hi, thanks for the info. I've just called the Michelin help line and they don't recommend mixing Road Trail 5's with Road 6.

Good morning, thank you for kind words 👍. I know of several BMW dealerships around the world that recommend the series to new BMW customers and that’s really great.
Perhaps you can report this directly to BMW and that might help the channel 👍…. I am currently trying to get an interview with them about the new GS1300 and would like to interview the technical team, and then share some of the new technology with owners.
      Anyway… thank you for feedback
      Kindest regards Carl

I call them 'Panakee's', I hate them. I took them straight off my brand new GS and had Road 6's fitted. Good insight into the tyres featured though Carl. 👍

I did exactly the same, but found that the Road 6 have a tendency to weave at speed. On a euro tour last year we found ourselves on an unrestricted Autobahn so i gave it the beans. At 120 mph a tank slapper inducing weaving started. Not something I’d experienced on Road 5’s that I’d had before on my GS1200. By experimentation on this stretch of road & another really smooth bit later the same happened. They are v rated so should be fine up to 149mph
However, they were excellent in the corners & hairpins of the Alps.
So in UK they should be fine

Hi Nick, thank you for sharing your experience, I’ve not tried the Road 5 or 6 on the GS yet, but Anakee Adventure has been stable all the way up to the maximum. I think I read someone else’s comments about a weave at speed with the Road 6, perhaps some other subscribers will contribute too.
      Have a great weekend

Hi Nick, I was chatting to Michelin today and mentioned the weaving to them as your the second person to mention it. They said that with the Road 6 you need to have Dynamic mode selected to stiffen up the suspension due to weight transfer to the rear which happens at higher speeds. Just thought I would mention it

Thank you for your tire reviews, however yesterday I picked up a new 1300 GS from the Dealer, of course it has Michelin Anakee Adventure tires mounted and for the first 112 km when I was driving home, the tires on the asphalt are unbearable, they roar, whistle and groan, they are awful and I would even say disgusting, this is my third new BMW and I have never had such hopeless tires before, maybe their driving characteristics are good, but the noise they generate is unbearable, I spent a lot of money on a motorcycle and I have to buy a new set of tires. BMW, knowing about such ailments, should give a choice of tires in the configurator. Best regards

Sorry to hear your not happy with the Michelin tyres that for some reason came fitted to your new R1300gs. It's a surprise to me as Metzeler Tourance Next 2 should be fitted as standard. Perhaps ask your dealer to change them. Carl

    are anakee adventure tires noisey?

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  4 місяці тому +1

Hi RW, it really depends what you are comparing them with. For example they are much quieter than the OEM Bridgestone tyres fitted to the GS, but when compared to the Metzeler TN2 they are noisy.
A lot depends on the roads you want to ride. If you need gravel light off road capability then the AA tyres are very good.
But if you ride 95% road they Metzeler is a better and quieter tyre.
      Hope that helps

Carl you are top notch! You deserve way more subscribers! I own a GS 1250 2022 equipped with batlax a41 and will buy Michelin. Should I try anakees before road 6. I am a smooth on road rider with only 2 years experience. Thank you very much. Marc, Quebec , Canada 😉🏍

      Hi Marc, thank you !!!
I also do wish i had more subscribers, its really hard starting off on UA-cam, but I am pleased that 9,000 have supported me, very grateful for this support.
If you don't travel off-road then the Road 6 is an amazing tyre, even the Road 5 is really good.
But if you do occasionally go off-road the Anakee is a nice tyre to be on

@@justthewayitis Hi Carl, hope you have a pleasant Easter weekend.
My question, I was wondering at what frequency should my GS 1250 have software updates. Is my BMW dealer suppose to inform me every timethey are required? Our season begins here in a few weeks and I will have the latest security recall update concerning gear box.
Also, my GS is inactive during 6 winter months, being a mechanic engineer, do you recommend having an engine oil &filter change even though my 10 000 km is not reached yet. I had the first one at 1000 km. Thank you very much, your knowledge is very valuable to me. Cheers, Marc, Trois-Rivières, province of Quebec. 😉🏍

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  Рік тому +2

Hi Marc, software updates each time you have a dealer service would be fine, but you would need to ask / remind them to do that and some dealerships will charge an extra fee for that service.
Oil change is a very personal thing, some believe that should only be done when the service is due, but my experience is different and oil and filter is changed every year on all our cars and motorbikes, lawnmowers etc. regardless of hours used or mileage.
My VW golf had 427,000 km on her when we decided to finally retire her, I owned her for 300K and changed the oil and filter every 10k .
So if your gs does less than 5k per year I would just change the oil not the filter.
If you do closer to 10K per year change oil and filter.
Nice to hear your biking season is about to arrive, spring is finally here now in Germany so the riding season has just started.
      Best wishes Carl

Very informative video fella, I’ve had a set of 5’s and a set of 6’s on my 1250 gsa in the past and found them both awesome tyres, now I have a set of Bridgestone 32’s on and they’re either a tiny bit better on giving me cornering confidence or I’ve progressed in my riding skills. Which tyres are you putting on next ?
    Thanks Dale.

I think your spot on about rider confidence, we do learn and adapt and coming from sports and sports touring bikes it takes time to adjust
