I think he did it on purpose. He saw that Michael was giving him advice that would just make it awkward, so he looked up speeches from dictators (which fit Dwight perfectly) to make sure it was at least entertaining.

Michael is very competitive. He also just embarrassed himself in front of that entire crowd. Then his employee, a guy he just said he was mentoring, comes up and outdoes him by giving one of the greatest acceptance speeches ever. I don't think Michael was trying to abandon Dwight, after all he covered for Dwight when he was too nervous to go up on stage. But afterwards Michael was so humiliated that he couldn't stand to be in that room any longer. It was sad that he couldn't be happy for Dwight, but his competitive nature prevented that. Michael thinks "Dwight did better than me." and gets upset. But I'm glad Michael showed some vulnerability here, these kinds of personality flaws are what make the characters human. There's a little bit of Michael in all of us.

Since Dwight was panicking at the idea of bombing in front of that audience...He would probably understand why Michael reacted poorly to bombing in front of that audience, especially after how arrogant he was about it. More importantly he would understand that it had nothing to do with Michael disliking him. someone doing good things despite themselves is a lot easier to hate than someone doing bad things despite themselves. A lot of what made this show so great (especially early on) was in the subtle things. Best example of it here is Mochael going to do his robot impersonation by covering thebmic with two hands, but then realizing he needs a limb part-way through for the visual. I feel like those sorts of 'mistakes' (intentional or not) are details that couldn't possibly be written in the script. And they do a great job of making the show feel a little more organic & real, even in a situation/setup as ridiculous as this.

A lot of what made this show so great (especially early on) was in the subtle things. Best example of it here is Mochael going to do his robot impersonation by covering thebmic with two hands, but then realizing he needs a limb part-way through for the visual.
I feel like those sorts of 'mistakes' (intentional or not) are details that couldn't possibly be written in the script. And they do a great job of making the show feel a little more organic & real, even in a situation/setup as ridiculous as this.
