    This is episode number 1 of a 6 night mini-series of diagnostics videos that lead you through the diagnosis of a P0016 code on a 2007 Toyota 4Runner. We go step by step through proving it and fixing the problem. Tonights video is step one of the diag, check codes, verify the problem and make sure to think before diving in! We are going to the tackle this thing the smart way, not the hard way!
    Make sure to check back for episodes 2-6 where we continue the repair!

    (why would only Bank 1 be throwing codes in this scenario) Sir I took my 08 CTS in for inspection check engine light was on Garage says they think the reluctor wheel has shifted throwing the code. If I don't do anything what do you predict the longevity to be (they said the repair would be quite pricey or more feasible to do an engine swap) Thoughts 🤔(I had the timing chain, tensioners and guides replaced 3 years ago)

    I have question.On scan data ,Is "aim angle" the demanded change and "change angle" the actual angle read by cam sensor/ecu. So if controlling the duty cycle the "change angle" value must follow "aim angle" immediately after.If it's not changing then there's problem with the VVT variator.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  6 років тому +1

      Hey Petar, yeh that is true. Typically there will be a slight variance spec dependent on manufacturer between aim (desired) and change (actual) positions.

  • @alexmessina7652
    @alexmessina7652 6 років тому

    Hey Mike, I'm looking forward to this one. Will you do a Crank Angle/Ignition test using a Relative Compression waveform? I'm going to ask a stupid question here, even though people do this test all the time, I don't get the validity. If it's a Crank signal triggered ignition, even if the valve timing is off, say, because of a stretched chain, the ignition firing line should still appear in the right place relative to the compression waveform?? Unless the peak compression point itself shifts because of valve overlap affects?
    If its a cam driven distributor-based ignition trigger, then a comparison with relative comp waveform should show an early or late firing line?? But only if signal is driven off the cam?
    Tell me if Im not making sense?
    Alex

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  6 років тому

      Hey Alex, without giving anything away....yes there will be a relative compression test done. No it is not used to check ignition timing though. Like you've said, ignition timing is based off of what??? Crank angle...exactly. So ignition is kinda useless to look at in this case. If you have a cam driven pickup how would ignition be different? Is the cam not connected to the crank via a chain, if that chain were off, stretched, jumped, whatever...would the cam then not be off as well? This puts us in the same boat. I honestly don't see a time when ignition would be useful to judge timing. You'll see in tonight's video what I am using relative compression for. Stay tuned my friend :)

      Haadi, unfortunatley in the US we only have the 2.0L. I'm not sure the exact codes set criteria for the P0016 and P0017 on that 16L. Could be a variable valve timing issue maybe? Maybe the reluctor on the cam or the crank moved?

    I’m definitely late for when this video was posted, but I’m having the same code on my car. I’ve changed the cam sensor and it did make the code go away and let the car run like normal again for a few weeks, but then it came back. Biggest things it’s doing to my engine is making it mildly jumpy at idle, even though it stays between 740-780 rpms, and it likes to hesitate when moving from a stop sometimes. Otherwise, it runs just fine. If I clear the code while driving, it stays off, and only reappears when I turn the car off and back on again. I’m wondering if perhaps (since I did replace the motor a few months ago) if the ECU needs to be recalibrated to the mechanical timing of the motor? I had the new motor get a fresh timing kit with it before it was installed too.

    Would I be right in assuming that you did not visually check for a failed VVT after you lifted off the intake manifold, because there was not the second "P000B ... Slow Response" DTC? Dirty oil gunk on and/or broken screen on the oil control valve would result in a rough idle which you said you did not detect while driving it.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  4 роки тому

      Hey Tom, hmm great question. The quick answer would be "nothing". The PCM holds the correlation adjustment unless the battery and capacitors were drained(some vehicles may still store even after this point), a new part was installed that effects cam/crank, or the memory was cleared with a scanner. My engine needs a serious rebuild. When i replaced my Chrysler neon 2005 timing belt cover, i noticed its so greasy/oily around the camshaft seal, belt and tensioner. Had a P0014 and replacing the oil control solenoid along with oil change fixed the only code. Problem is this did not fix the Envoy stall on slight acceleration. This can be an expensive problem for the shop. I should have went with my instinct on this car, since it felt like a bad TPS. Looks like a bad pedal position sensor or electronic throttle body assembly 😳

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  6 років тому

      Sometimes an oil change and a new VVT solenoid are all they need...that's not that case with this one :) Envoys are common for throttle body issues. Sometimes cleaning the throttle body and doing a quickie relearn takes care of it. Maybe try that?

    • @GoTechTraining

      Hey Leonard, the P0016 is related to engine timing. The trans is responsible for forward and reverse so as long as the engine is running, both gears should be possible. The other 2 codes are wheel speed sensor related and won't cause transmission issues either.

    Hi Mike, awesome videos. Super helpful and very well presented, you're a natural at this stuff. Question: How would temperature effect this code? I have an 08 4Runner V6 and I can control this code producing the CEL by simply choosing when to start and stop the engine, based on operating temp. Cold starts will always trip it, but if I drive several cycles while it's at operating temperature, the code will disappear until the next cold start. I can reliably predict the CEL just by cold vs hot starts. It seems several others on the forums experience the same thing. Any ideas or insight on temperature effects on the system? Cheers

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  6 років тому

      Hey Rob. Thanks! Great question. Many times test will only run when the vehicle has been cold started. In the code set criteria for a P0016 Toyota states that the test is run once per drive cycle and the vehicle must also be idled for 5 minutes straight. It does not define a coolant temp for the "drive cycle" but generally speaking the vehicle would need to go through a warm-up in order to be considered a drive cycle. So yes, I would say temp has a factor is running the test, temp probably does not effect the actual fault.

    • @rob77g60
      @rob77g60 6 років тому

      Ok, thanks. I suspected that too. I hoped you might say that oil temp (and oil condition/contamination) might effect performance of the OCV applying pressure to the VVT, and therefore the VVT not advancing or retarding the timing appropriately (but only when the oil is cold and thick, therefore intermittent).
      It's weird, my CEL comes on 5-10 seconds after cold start up. Guess I'll have to understand the test conditions a little better. Thanks again.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  6 років тому

      Rob, I suggest you take a look at the videos that follow up. I proved out in the videos that the VVT system can not cause this code. The P0016 is for OVER retarded timing. VVT on this car can only advance the timing, meaning VVT can not force thing more retarded than the mechanical stop inside the cam. Like I said, check out the follow up episodes to this video. you wont be disappointed :)

      Oh, over retarding... got it. I did watch them all last night (and my wife thinks I'm weird for enjoying them so much, haha). I thought you proved it was not causing the code just on that particular vehicle, but I understand what you're saying now.

      Yes, the cam/crank correlation has tight tolerances and could be off enough to set the code without throwing the vacuum off to far. You can check the timing by removing the two top timing belt covers. It is a quick easy check to make sure your base timing is good
