      @@Motorcarnut Hey, after we drove the car about 50 miles, had the same issue happen when we started it this morning. Looks like the new VVT oil control valve has already popped out (Dorman brand). We bought the car about 8k miles ago from a VW tech who had rebuilt the engine completely, do to a timing failure. We've had a camshaft position sensor code since we bought it, but tech said it was from the ECM being replaced during rebuild and not to worry about it. Could it be that he didn't get the timing right or possibly it has skipped a tooth, or could the Dorman unit just be a POS and I should go OEM? Could it be the Cam Adjuster Magnet (the pin is moving in an out decently). We replaced the Cam Position Sensor to no avail. I'm guessing it would be the same with the Crankshaft Position sensor. Definitely ran flawlessly for about 50 miles last night, then back to square 1 this morning. Thank you sir!

      @Trouttdawg no it’s probably nothing electrical, remove the solenoid and see if the oil control valve popped out again. Let me know.

    • @Trouttdawg
      @Trouttdawg 29 днів тому

      Swapped out the VVT again with a new one (1st one lasted a day). Same thing. Worked well for about 500 miles after the install of the 2nd new one (car was running great) and replaced the camshaft adjuster magnet as well just in case when we installed the 2nd one. Now, engine running terrible at low idle. EPC back on and Camshaft pos sensor bank 1. I think there is a VVT at the oil pan as well. Could that be the issue. Or next step being oil pump? We have gotten a couple of low oil pressure lights at lower RPMS over the last 2 months, but VERY intermittent and go away as soon as RPMs go up from about 1300. I'd hate to think it jumped a tooth on a timing chain with engine rebuilt with new (upgraded) tensioner 8k miles ago. Penny for your thoughts sir? Here's a bit more color: we've replaced the PCV, cam sensor, crank sensor, VVT, cam adj mag, inspected the cam bridge (looks like a new one when the engine was rebuilt, screen was perfect). Ross tech scan shows ECM isn't vin matched. Ours is a manual and think the ECM came from an automatic. Also, ABS sensor on front left (replacing Sunday), A/C compressor showing ground fault, and a few other things. Replacing plugs, coils, and new coil connectors as well on Sunday. I doubt that will do anything, but coils and connectors are in bad shape either way. Any direction you could steer me in would be great as I'm nickel and diming this thing. Thanks!

    Thanks for the vid, much appreciated. 2.0 tfsi Audi CJEB engine. Chain was rattling and replacement was done. I had some Throttle and MAF correletion DTC, replaced PCV valve and it went away. After that cleared, now I'm getting a P0016. Engine performance is fine and one kick start. Sometimes it has an erratic/misfiring idle and once I rev it a little, that goes away.
    The intake and exhaust cams both use cam adjuster valves. Previous repair shop stripped off an oil strainer on one of the valves, meaning that one valve has a strainer and the other does not. Could this cause oil pressure differences between the two cams and affect the timing setup? Hence the P0016?

      Oil is supposed to be in the oil control valve. You may have a cam bridge check valve problem

  • @Ivy_and_mom
    @Ivy_and_mom Місяць тому +1

    So I started following your video, you say (2:55) to first disconnect the plug to the solenoid and make sure there's no oil in there...Mine was wet with oil - what could that mean? There was also a little oil pooling at the bottom when I removed the cam magnet. However, the oil control valve didn't appear broken (the tab was still flush). I did still remove it and wipe it down. The pin in the middle of the cam magnet did move in and out, but maybe not as freely as it should....
    The P0016 code came immediately after an oil change - trying to figure out if its related to an error/sloppy oil change.

    • @Motorcarnut
      @Motorcarnut  Місяць тому

      Clean the oil out of the solenoid plug and it should be replaced but the oil inside where the magnet is, is normal and supposed to be there. If the oil control valve center button is flush and moves in and out then the cause is probably the cam bridge check valve. I have videos on the removal of that too, it’s a little more involved to remove but worth it.

      Probably bent valves if timing chain tensioner wasn't replaced. Have many videos on the issue you may want to check out.

    You must be a genius. Let’s just say I wouldn’t have found that if my life depended on it. Also this is following using your head removal video to fix carbon build up on intake valves and also had slightly bent valves. Which what would of took you a couple hours, took me days to complete. Then just to fire it up and have it run like it did before which was crap. Misfiring like crazy. So I got the codes, searched them up and it led me right back to you lol. And sure enough that little “dong” was sticking right out. So I’m hoping and praying that solves it. 2 days from rock auto and it should be here. At first I thought too, oh maybe it’s my coil packs or sensor I forgot or something or maybe dare I say if, I had the timing wrong... So I tried to diagnose but every cylinder was mis firing according to my scan tool. Anyways long story short. Thanks for the major help! God bless!

    • @Motorcarnut
      @Motorcarnut  10 місяців тому

      Thank you so much for the write up, Yes that should solve your misfiring problems. If the oil control valve fails the computer can't control valve timing and it will misfire. Let me know how it works out!

      She runs like a gem now, perfect.
      That’s crazy that little mechanical piece can cause so much issue.
      Also have you ever tried to fix it by hitting the centre of that valve back in? I took my old one and tapped it back in and it just popped right back where it’s supposed to be? I still have a new one but might work for temporary purposes.

    • @Motorcarnut
      @Motorcarnut  10 місяців тому

      @joelhiebert3129 I wouldn’t play around with the old one, it’s a precision piece and can make things worse. Glad she’s running properly. Thanks for the update and good luck!

    If the solenoid control valve is flush and still have p0016. Is there valve damage? On cold engine dry compression test all cylinders are at 90psi. Is that good or bad??

    • @Motorcarnut
      @Motorcarnut  11 місяців тому

      No valve damage because of oil control valve. 90 psi in all cylinders is ok for a cold engine. I would check the cam cradle oil check valve, a lot of times they become loose and create your problem

    • @ivanvega2821
      @ivanvega2821 11 місяців тому

      @@Motorcarnut I just took off the cover to see the tensioner. I stuck a small flathead and was able to compress the tensioner easily. As far as my understanding, that shouldn’t be able to be that easy to compress the tensioner. Also, tensioner is the old common failure tensioner. Uffff hahaha

    • @Motorcarnut
      @Motorcarnut  11 місяців тому

      @ivanvega2821 Yes, Unfortunately. I bet it jumped a tooth and that’s your whole problem right there and with the compression readings you probably didn’t bend the valves which is a good thing. I have all kinds of videos to help you do the timing chain tensioner yourself.
