I've used this with my Rottie for leash reactivity after unsuccessful attempts with ecollar and forceful leash pops. He's now a model dog on walks and immediately looks at me at when distractions (kids playing, other dogs, bicyclists, etc.) arise. Thanks Larry - You had mentioned this technique (in the context of mindsets) in another video which led me to change my approach and focus on teaching skills and mindset.
John - so what do you currently do when he looks at you when he sees other dogs on your walk? Give praise? nothing? give a treat? Just wondering how this progresses past the initial conditioning.
I can not waaaaaaiiiiitttt to try this with my pitbull. He LOVES training, He LOVES to please, but he can be reactive/resource guard/fear aggressive. When my husband and I moved in together we joined two dogs. They spend a lot of time in the same space, so my pitty has really calmed down. He will even occasionally lay down on the same bed as her. But he has a muzzle on if they are off leash in the same room because if she rubs him the wrong way he will lunge and bite. I really believe he will respond well to this stress-reward training. Thank you so much Larry for being willing to explore so many different avenues to find the best practices for these dogs.
I can totally watch and listen to you educating me for hours! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. And such important and kind reminder to really love our dogs. I really appreciate what you do.
When I’m training, I like to think of it as creating a new behavior rather than stopping things. At the end of the day, I’m motivating a dog to do something new, something different than what they were once doing.
Thank you very much for using the term negative reinforcement correctly. I have some applied behaviour analysis training and it drives me crazy when I hear trainers using it wrong!
Thank you so much, Larry. My husband’s name is Larry also. We call him the untrainer. This was so helpful to me and I’ve made huge strides with the reactivity but I think this will take me the rest of the way. I can’t wait till your seminar and phone consult.
Always love your videos! Funny how you apologize for “talking too long” and in my head I’m like noooo I wish it was more 😂😂👏🏼 thank you so much for always sharing , I’ve implemented so much with my rottie puppy and I share your videos with anyone who I see struggling with their dog
For my dog and what I want... it that look from him that “he is understanding “ everything begins with the leash. A quick pop with a small Sprenger on a 65lbs GSP is all I need, and it’s all he needs. The leash is the best at communicating. I’m looking forward to using the “remote collar.” I’ve had success using it for counter surfing, but I discontinued its use altogether until he and I could communicate with the leash. Way to go Larry.
Well said! If all versatile trainers worked like you the war on tools would stop. I spend far to much time helping people reclaim their dog from the darkness you explained at the end there.
for my dog the reward is whatever he wants at the time weather its treats, toys, to say hi to another dog. when he displays good behaviour he is rewarded but when he doesnt do the correct behaviour i have him go back to 1 and try again like when an actor messes up a scene. if negative reinforcement is needed i use a leash check since he responds well to leash pressure and is good with loose leash walkig around small dogs.. when he snaps out of it i reward him if he doesnt stop i step on the leash and wait for him to calm down or walk away from the stimulus or sometimes use cars as barriers. i have to use a front clip harness due to beong a small dog. btw if the other dog doesnt want to be approached i have him leave it and he leaves them alone. if i tell him to say hi to an obvious friendly dog he goes through the greeting process. when greeting i never let him greet long enough to where he or the other dog decides what to do. with nosey dogs who arent mine i have mine sit and look at me and we go away from that dog.
Playing with dogs is a massively underrated bonding exercise. The clicker makes total sense like rewarding after luring a sit reward then finally adding the command , the other dog is the lure. Positive only fails because it can take a long time and 1 hour a week and bad timing by the owner undoes the 1 good hour by the trainer. Hope it makes sense
Fairly new to your channel and Really enjoy your videos . You are the most interesting straightforward trainer I've ever come across. Keep the videos coming.
Larry, does your reward the wrong mind set technique work with dominant aggressive dogs? The type that like to prance around on their tip toes with their chests puffed out.
Very interesting concept of using the clicker/reward for reactivity. I am wondering how it progresses. Specifically, after the conditioning and the dog looks at you when it stresses due to proximity of another dog, what do you do? In the beginning, of course, you reward. But as time goes on it would seem to not be viable or advisable to have an endless supply of treats to always give the dog when it comes near another dog - and what happens if you do not have the treat to reward particularly if happens repeatedly?
I sincerely love putting on these long talks while I work around the house. Larry, can you give me a list of the top trainers? I’d love to to expand my horizons.
Don’t know which ones he’s referring to specifically but Michael Ellis, Robert Cabral, Nate Schoemer are trainers on youtube that share similar philosophies
It makes sense if u subscribe to the view that u can operatantly condition behaviours but not emotional states. It sounds like you are reinforcing the looking to the handler not the stressful emotion? Either way its a great outcome. Gives the dog alternative behaviour rather than reacting and great for the owner.
Good advice, thank you for posting. I’ll rewatch many times. I have a fearful 3 year old who is constantly watching the gate while playing or attempting to training in the backyard. He gives eye contact when feeding and thresholds are 100% improved but breaking through when he’s on alert is a struggle, holding his attention to be more specific. What’s the best way to signup for one on one lessons or group lessons? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
This was super interesting!! I am going to try this and wonder if it is dog fear aggression, if you click treat then move away if there is an oncoming dog. I would think so then you can repeat. It's just like counterconditioning yes? I had done a lot of that and didnt work quickly but it works. How is what you are talking about different?
No offence. But if you click and reward and yhe dog is foreign to a clicker. The click is actually a que "look at me" and you get rewarded. The dog doesnt know you are marking a behaviour with the click as you normally would, because the clicker is foreign to him. So im guessing saying the dogs name and it looks at you, while little stressed and you reward is the same as click reward. What you are actually doing is rewarding the looking and the click is the que for the dog to look at you, instead of the marker of behaviour. So you learn the dog to look at you when stressed and thats why the behaviour goes away. But hey this is just an analyzation of a normal guy with a dog. Im no dog trainer, exept for my iwn dog. So i could be wrong. Curious what you think?
Some people will argue that it's punishment to apply leash pressure. So to them I'd ask: so it's punishment to not let a dog go wherever it wants to go? Because when it's at the end of the leash, guess what's happening.
When we got our first rottie in 1996 (stationed at Ft Carson) he was a rescue and was in with the bite cases. We brought to a training facility in Colorado Springs. They used positive and punishment also. Through the years though, I find myself leaning like you do. Reward and reinforce the behaviors we want and they will respond. We have had 15 rotties over the years and a German shepherd and a chow. I have always been able to bring anyone into our home at anytime and they would be accepted. Now, that being said, yes the dogs did watch them and if they saw behavior from the HUMANS that the dog thought was threatening, they would put themselves between US and whoever was visiting lol. We are guilty of spoiling our dogs and treating them like they are our children. To us, they are our children and children have to be trained also, done they? We love every dog we have dearly and when the end comes, we are always there till the very end hugging them. We cry like babies each and every time, but I couldnt even imagine life without them in it.
I wonder if the "surprising clicking" would help with leash pulling? We tried almost everything - prong collar, turn away, change directions, say NO, reward while in heel positon - but the dog keeps pulling.
Could you do something similar to teaching "bark" with leash/dog reactivity? My pup knows bark command. Mind you its an excited high pitched bark vs the louder bark in her leash/dog reactivity.
Omg!! What the heck is this world coming to!! Whatever word is used ( AND YES ALWAYS PEOPLE OUT HERE MEAN AND CRUEL) let's have faith PEOPLE, common sense, let's teach dogs with rewards, and should a dog a dog blow you off, another incentive could be implemented try, all avenues, sometimes aloud verbal NO Through something, or like Larry gives a perfect example teach the opposite 😉!! But all these tactics work WHEN USED PROPERLY!! Humans need the most intense training!! Lets save these dogs and allow them to live less stressful lives, but if the human is stressed???

Our dog is dog aggressive and I’ll start this clicker technique right now!

Love this concept! What would be done with dogs who are not food motivated .
Great advice Larry. I know too many trainers that only use the ecollar as a form of correction.
It's not that black and white, you explained this pretty well, thank you Larry
The ending broke me. Nicely done
Larry, does your reward the wrong mind set technique work with dominant aggressive dogs? The type that like to prance around on their tip toes with their chests puffed out.
Watched the whole video, the last 30 ish seconds was very touching 🙏🏻

awesome video as usual...thanks!

Hi Larry! I am trying to become a dog trainer eventually! And I would love all the channels/people you recommend?
Along with Larry, look into Upstate Canine Academy/Tom Davis and Robert Cabral.
Ironk did send you the best message!
@@thelabandtheyork4031 I LOVE Tom Davis! He got me into balanced dog training! I will check out Robert Cabral! Thank you!
What is dog spot? Thanks.
I would like to know which trainers you’re talking about so that I can learn more about training outside of just ecollars if you don’t mind sharing.
Same!

I've heard this for years, put the bark on cue/command, then never give the command. But, I've never heard itr explained like this before. Thank!

Maybe substitute “correction” instead of “punishment”? There is a difference.
