What I find most interesting about the Twitter case is how many go straight to the characteristics they hate about Elon Musk, referencing these as reason enough for Twitter's "inevitable" collapse.
But, the same rarely admit the exact same characteristics exist across most corporate America, even in their own political/ideological "team." Go talk to most VCs and executives in the Bay Area or, if you're even more "lucky" (haha), owners of some the big private equity firms. Most of the valley and PE are entire mono-cultures with carbon copies of types like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Zuck, etc.
Basically, people are just extremely politicized now and want to rationalize their bias, ironically not admitting the much bigger problems unfolding across the board in the process. Instead of admitting this and avoiding a growing divide, majority are concluding "ya, the entire foundation is cracking under contradicting incentives and interests... but f*** you, you're one of THEM! WE are better..."

Since the idea of forcing users to pay for membership has been raised, I've noticed whole communities move over to Bluesky, and continue on Mastodon. I don't think the actual visitor numbers on Twitter are being impacted for now though, since most of the proflific members seem to post on multiple platforms. However, a lot of people are ready to walk, and Musk's capricious behaviour means that many will avoid doing anything to directly financially support Twitter if they can.
The only thing that's preventing a mass exodus is the lack of a clear single "winner" in the race to provide an alternative.

Buy for trustworthiness? Nope, it's $8/month to get verified; big brands and politicians got trolled and status is now meaningless.
Buy for ad revenue? Nope, they jump ship like rats.
Buy for the talent? Nope, 2/3rd of them were either fired or quit.
Buy for the tech? Nope, Meta managed to recreate it in weeks; Indy devs did likewise at smaller scale.
Buy for the brand recognition? Nope, rebranded to X, which he already owned.

Because since 2015, the mainstream social media platforms have gone from bipartisan spaces for open debate, to almost completely captured by an unholy alliance between advertisers and leftists. Who would thought the hardcore capitalists and leftists would both want social media sterilised of views deemed unsuitable?
People have started to realise what a hypocritical contradiction it is, and now we have terms like 'woke capitalism' to describe the situation.
EM wanted the platform he personally used the most to be returned to a more pre 2015 like state.
It has proven useful in getting multiple perspectives on a story. If you average views across say, X, Reddit, and Ground News, you will find it surprising how each platform omits certain facts about certain stories. So few people give a damn about the truth anymore.

    • @KrisRogos
      @KrisRogos 6 місяців тому

@@fubar12345 Few things I've got to point put:
Left/right is an economic concept; i.e. how much taxes are, public spending, government's influence on the free market and distribution of wealth. Social issues and their permissivnes is a authoritarian vs liberal devide. A lot of people and companies are liberal in their views on religion, lgbtq, immigration, etc while also right leaning economically and want to see low taxes and a less regulated market. This is nothing new, search for the term *political compass" for a more detailed breakdown and to see where notable people are.
Turning specifically to Elon, he is not consistent with his own position. While in various interviews he has stated that he is strongly in favour of free speech and free market, in reality his companies benefit from a lot of grants, subsidies and government contracts and the freedom of speech necessities the freedom to call out companies who advertise along content someone does not support, those companies subsequently enjoy the freedom to withdraw their advertising funds from any platform and for any reason.
The continual fall in X's revenue is free market at work, there are not enough people willing to pay for its premium service and not enough companies willing to pay for advertising. Musk's job is to either come up with an offering that will be more appealing or he has to accept there isn't a big enough market for his vision of what a social media platform should be.

Them hiring back Dorsey when he refused to do the job full time will always take the cake for me when it comes to corporate stupidity and sheep investor strategy. Instead of spinning off vine or even folding it into Twitter, he shut it down and let go 350 people who had just built the fastest growing app of the last 5 years. Faster even than Twitter. Madness.
A couple years later, and Google demonstrated how keeping a content business operating as a content business could feed the bottom line growth of a tech giant, and of course ticktock showed how the medium could be monetized. Burning down vine, even at the time, struck me as just one of the most insane acts of stupidity I’ve seen in corporate America - and that’s saying a lot.

I never got into Twitter. I do have an account that I set up way back when Twitter first launched (I believe in 2009) just so I could see what all of the hype was about, but I haven't even been on that site in many years. I had actually kind of forgotten about it. I just never saw the point of it. I stick to Facebook and Instagram and I've recently gotten into watching TikTok, but Twitter was just something that I never sparked any interest in. I always thought it was so stupid how they limited you to a ridiculously low number of characters in a post. I wouldn't be surprised to see it go the way of MySpace.

I can't say I agree with your metrics for success. Claiming the app is running better than expected because it hasn't crashed and user counts are recently going up isn't really a great marker for success.
The app has had serious issues every time there's been any sort of major event. Desantis or Tucker anyone? Both of just those two ventures crapped out because the app simply couldn't scale. Also, does it matter if the user count is going up if it's made up of bots and fascists that would have been banned pre-Elon? With their minimal staff, a whole lot of content that previously been banned has been living on Twitter long term. That really doesn't make for success. Especially as various organizations, like the FTC, have been making noises about coming after Twitter over hate speech and misinformation it seems to be amplifying.
Hell, any app where the owner forces the engineers to amplify his own messages so basically everyone is forced to see them whether they want to or not isn't showing signs of health. Add to that Musks recent plan to force every member to go behind a paywall because the bots are put of control. Ya, kind of sounds like he's admitting that he has no clue how to solve the issue. Of course, we all know he's saying that to appease creditors he can't pay off.

I would like to see what changes were made to the algorithm and if it works for everyone the same or not. A lot of the things people complain about twitter, I have legitimately never encountered. I am unsure if it has to do with what people click on, or if the algorithm does treat people differently.
In regards to the bot accounts, I think it's proving to be more difficult to battle than expected. It was always a problem on twitter, but I am not sure how much of an effort the previous regime put into it since it was always bad. With the current regime, there seems to be waves of them. I get a bunch of DMs from bots, then I don't get anything for weeks and then they come again. I'm assuming the current team is making changes to stop the bots, but then they figure out a way around whatever change was made. But who knows. I never really see them on threads though, so that's a plus.
I think Twitter over the years has had terrible management and vision. Twitter has succeeded despite how bad it has been managed. For me it was when they shut down Vine. It was a viral hit and then they just cut it off. That made no sense. Periscope/Meerkat integration was also great...and they cut that off too.
UA-cam and Twitter are my favorite platforms, I don't see myself going away from them any time soon.
