    • @terrydaktyllus1320

It depends how you configure it. This version and configuration of VNC provides a direct mirror of your open desktop so I don't know how it would work if not logged in.
But I personally use TigerVNC on Linux and the way I have it configured is to launch a separate desktop session when I log in - so it doesn't matter whether or not the remote machine is logged in or not, as long as the vnc service is running in the background.

    • @leepspvideo

They way mine works is if I logout to the pi os password/login screen. I can log back in by pressing the 3 dots bottom right of the VNC viewer selecting keyboard type password and press enter. "VNC is such a mess."
No, VNC is designed to provide remote access to desktops that do not change dramatically from second to second. That is the purpose that it is designed to serve. It is not designed to stream fast-changing images.
"Remote desktop protocol should be a standard"
VNC is a standard, as is RDP or X11, which can also be used to provide remote graphical desktop capability. I'm not sure what you are complaining about.
"and also a basic requirement of a graphical desktop environment."
I am not sure what you mean by "a basic requirement". I would argue that most people running Windows at home never use a remote desktop environment. The main reason for that is that to connect externally through a NAT router on an Internet connection requires some technical skill to securely open pinhole ports for access, or some kind of subscription to a "middle man" type service.
"Wayvnc is a poor cludge and Pi OS shouldn't have been released as Wayland by default without making sure there was robust support."
Wayland is not something that I use at all given that my one and only Linux OS is Gentoo which I can get to run on just about anything and uses Xorg by default. Xorg is still supported for bug fixes, there is no reason to use Wayland unless you're some self-entitled gamer obsessed with frame rates on "Cybersplatt 4044".

You might want to understand what you are talking about before posting nonsense. RFB is a standard (rfc6143) but VNC is not. There are multiple implementations e.g. RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, TigerVNC, TurboVNC, Vino, Xvnc to name but a few, and for the most part they don't play nicely with each other. Moreover all Linux VNC implementations are X11 based with Wayland support as "ongoing". I've no idea why you are wanging on about Gentoo and Windows. My comments are aimed at Raspberry Pi and Pi OS, where my projects remote access of an SBC as a basic requirement. As for the general X11 v Wayland debate, please note the RedHat are dropping X11 support, so expect other distros to follow suit. However I expect them to support VNC on Wayland out of the box. So back to my original statement: VNC on Pi OS (Bookworm) is a hot mess. FACT. QED.
