Good video, but actually in case no one else mentioned it, the easiest way to find your internal IP is simply 'hostname -I' (without the quotes and that's a capital I as in 'eye'). It's easiest because it shows ONLY your IP, so you don't have to sort through the other stuff. Liked and subbed.
Caroline I just want to say it’s ALL YOUR FAULT! My journey into pi world, that is. I hadn’t seen one of these things until I saw one of your videos about MyMedia. Now I have 3 pi.
Ridiculous how many times I had to look through multiple sites to find the information you give at the very end of this video. Lol. Its pointless to set up a vnc if you have to recheck every time you reboot. Might as well have a monitor hooked up. Seriously, thanks!
Thank you very much for making this video, it worked with my iMac & Raspberry Pi. I spent a solid 3 days getting driven mad trying other methods. As others have said hostname -I (-eye) gets the IP address and make sure to use sudo raspi-config as Caroline says, do not rely on changing the settings in preferences on the Pi
This is exactly what I needed Caroline! I have used SSH but I prefer desktop control after 35 years! It was not difficult and your instructions were easy to follow. However, the VNC viewer comes up, but it looks like an old 16 color display. I can run everything, but it is not visually pleasant with missing edges to buttons and windows. I don't see any settings for that.
In VNC Viewer, right click on the raspberry pi, select 'properties' then the 'options' tab. There you will find a setting to change the picture quality. Hope that helps!
VNC is very useful I use it all the time. Incidentally, if you sign up for a real VNC account it is free for up to 5 devices. Then you can access the pi from anywhere, even android and iPhone with the VNC app.
This was helpful but I have some feedback. You fly through the menu in Raspi-config and either the menus have changed or you're not starting at the same place so we may not be seeing what you see when I follow you step by step - I literally backed up a few times to see that your menu options aren't the same as mine. When we first turn on VNC on the Pi 4. Additionally, it runs an install, not flash back to the menu like you showed. You may want to slow it down and give just a bit more information instead of flying through the interface and explain what that actually does overall, not just to the VNC experience.
Thanks for the tutorial Caroline...leaning much from your content. I don't know if things have changed...but I found that opening up the VNC Connect app on the pi desktop after enabling it and rebooting, also revealed my internal IP and other connectivity information.
Love your tutorials they’re excellent! A tip for finding your pi IP address from the raspbian desktop. Hover the mouse over the connection icon near the clock it will show you
Hi Caroline - thanks for your video - you did not cover the install procedure for Windows after you finished with the install on your MAC. Is there any difference ? Also, does access to the Internet have to be 'on' for the RealVNC to allow remote access into the RPi ? Thank-you
i assume u're using the latest raspbeery pi os(bookworm) as of current, which doesnt actually support vnc servers. to fix this, u'll have to download an older version of raspberry pi os like bullseye hope this helps@@
Hi Caroline, great video, I went through all the steps... but once I have enabled the VNC on my Pi the button on top of the screen shows a red marker as an alarm on the VNC button... the error is then "private key is defect". Can you explain how to solve that? Via ssh its working Thanks...
so I noticed this app works when you are on the same subnet, but when you are trying to connect from a different subnet, even when you have IP connectivity, it doesn't work? any ideas? seems like it needs to be in the same broadcast domain
hi madam i have some doubt if i am using 4G SIM hat module in Raspberry pi and over the internet if i want to take remote connection how we can able to do that ????? please help
When I try to connect my Pi to VNC viewer I keep getting an error saying I need to select my encryption parameter to a weaker level or update VNC server. Nothing I've tried worked though
I understood that Vnc is able to connect remotely to the raspberry only if this is on the same network as the PC that wants to connect it. Is there any way to connect to the RPi from mobile or from another PC that is not connected to the same network as the RPi is connected to?
@@aboodalzoib8889 I get Rustdesk (open source and 100% free) and didn't find any problems. I can connect the Raspberry perfectly even outside the same local network.
My VNC connection to the PI is very slow and sluggish, I'm not overloading the PI CPU at all, I'm using a 2.4ghz wifi network, how can I make it run smoother ?
Hello Caroline!! I am your fan!! Excellent tutorial!! One question? I recently installed in my Raspberry Pi 4 Ubuntu Mate and I found Remmina Remote Desktop Client and installed it. But, I have not able to connect to my Windows 10 PC using VNC Viewer. Would please explain how to do it?
Hello Caroline, thank you for this video, but unfortunately, I have an issue with not being able to connect. I set up VNC Server on my Pi 4, and VNC Viewer on my Win10 laptop.. I can see my Pi 4 in the laptop Server window, but I cannot select it. The menu says select the computer to view it, but I cannot select anything on the screen (except to edit the name itself). Also, I never got the box to enter the IP address of my Pi 4. Is that different on Windows than the Mac? Thanks again, Marc
Ifconfig only showing eth0 and lo. There is no Wlan0. There is a problem showing No wireless interfaces. Tried many things. Still didnt working. Because of this, cant connect using wifi.
I followed the instructions in the video exactly. VNC viewer works perfectly. However I have a question. Is there a big difference between using VNC versus Remote Desktop?
Thank you, this video was excellent. I'm new to using Linux, Python and the latest Rasberry Pi (4). I tried using the old Raspberry Pi 2 when it was already outdated. I didn't have much luck getting some of the code to work and gave up on it. But I'm at it again with a little more help on my side. I just bought the Rasberry Pi 4 with 7" touchscreen and got it all working. It's a cool little tablet. I'm taking a course in Data Analysis with Python at UCSD and the course project suggests doing something by gathering data in real time to analyze later. I'm having a lot of fun!

great tip thank you...also, add a space between hostname and the dash
Thanks

Perfect. Best tutorial I've found yet. I'll try using the same steps with Tight VNC.

This was really helpful. Now I can successfully run the raspberry pi from my laptop in the comfort of my blanket.
That was very helpful I am up and running with a raspberry pi and I knew nothing about VNC eight minutes 40 seconds ago.
Fantastic video! Some menus have changed in raspi-config but this video is great after wasting time trying to set up xrdp connections.

Hi from the UK. Excellent video, clear and concise. Well done. Subscribed !
Thank you for showing this simple procedure.
best and most simple explanation for beginners I found! Thank you for your Video!
Helpful. A couple things have on the config menu, but easy enough to figure out. Thanks!

Simple to follow guide, thanks! Never used VNC before.
The clearest explanation of this topic I have read so far. A big thanks Caroline.

This was pretty good. Immediately;y subscribed. Thanks!!
Excellent video for this Raspberry Pi noob. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the ONLY accurate and complete instruction I could find on how to connect my Mac to my Pi! Thanks!!
Thank you for this. Surely no need for VNC viewer on the Mac, just use Screen Sharing?
Hello Caroline . very good tutorial. but please explain how to reserve IP? where to log in to get this screen?
Worked in mine. Thanks a lot.
Been using this for a while and this works great

do we have to use the same network to connect to the pi? Excellent video by the way.
really good teaching, thanks
very easy to follow. Nice vid! :)
This works only if Raspberry and the computer are in the same network, not by Internet, right?
FINALLY, A Video that actually shows me how to connect it to my laptop.

thanks, easy to follow instructions.
You’re a life saver God bless you
What is the maximum distance we put laptop with rpi4 using vnc services
Issue is that my rpi4 is attached with drone and fly it 100 meter
I can do this from myown network which is great in itself - but what if I am away from home?
Thanks Caroline, I'm going to try this on my Magic Mirror

I’m trying to remote play to retropie, it didn’t give me a password option when I was setting it up. Do I leave it blank when I use vnc?
can we remotely access the raspberry pi outside of the network? For example, my pi is in NY, but i want to access it from Texas.

Is it possible to connect and control a Windows machine like this. Meaning without the whole account stuff they keep asking for when I tried.
In macOS the VNC Client is built-in
