DP were being interviewed and were asked how they write their music. Blackmore picked up his guitar and played a random riff and Ian Gillan improvised with a few words about a fast car he had recently bought. After the interview DP worked on the song and played it at a concert that very same day. That song was Highway Star. To me this is the best DP line up (often called Mk2) - Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on keyboard (a cut down Hammond P3), Ian Paice on drums and Ian Gillan singing at his best. If you have not already done so, you should listen to Child in Time.
@John Smith both the studio and live versions are awesome. Depends also on which live performance one listens to. The early 70s BBC studio version your link goes to is probably the best live performance.

I haven't been listening for awhile, but pretty sure they did Child in Time before and that I commented they should listen to Ian sing In the Garden of Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar. Ian is a God as far as rock voices go.
As long as someone from the USA doesn't comment that Child in Time is about the Vietnam War. Every time this is commented as a definite. Ian has stated it was written when the USA and Russia were threatening to blow up the world with nuclear bombs and I can remember this was all over the newspapers and terrifying in the UK. The blind men are the USA and Russian governments of the time 'shooting up the world'.
"Lazy" is far and away, my favorite tune by Deep Purple. Let me just comment on the "one trick pony" comment. It is because they aren't getting the best advice when it comes to recommendations. For example, for the life of me, I don't know why people would introduce Deep Purple with "My woman from Tokyo" to make an initial impression. Regardless, if they want to go down the path of "Rush level" comparisons, they have to go with the tune "Lazy". They just aren't getting the full grasp of creativity and musical talent by chasing the commercialized tunes.

From Deep Purple's Machine Head album, 1972, this is the fastest tempo song on the album. With long classically inspired guitar and great organ solos this is a great tune. On a tour bus to Portsmouth, a reporter asked them how there songs were written. Guitarist Rutchie Blackmore picked up an acoustic guitar and began a riff of single g over and over. An hour later this song was refined and performed the same night. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

I`m 65, and can remember in the early 70s, hearing my older brothers Deep Purple album "Machine Head" for the first time, it was awesome, with such amazing heavy instrumental rock music with matching singing. I`ve loved it ever since, and bought my own copy on 12"vynil. I`ve also got the album on CD to hear in the car, but the vynil will always sound the best, though i rarely play it, so it does`nt get damaged or worn out. Glad you guys enjoyed it, the rock music scene back in the 70s had so much good music to listen to. You`ve probably already heard them, but i would also recommend Lead Zepplin 4, Status Quo, and Dire Straights. All very different, but all equally as good, but in different ways.
Deep Purple was one of my favorite bands growing up as a teenager owning and still have all their albums. I got to see them live 3 times in the 70's. Another band you should check out that doesn't have as great a recognition they deserve is Uriah Heep. They have a long list of great songs, Easy Livin, Stealin, Lady in Black, Wizard, July Morning, Sunrise, Sweet Lorraine...
Great choice, I first saw Deep Purple in Concert at the age of fifteen in May 1974 at Cardiff Capitol in Wales and have followed all their various incarnations ever since, the music still feels fresh and vibrant and just as relevant today.
There are like 4 different versions of Deep Purple, this is mark 2. Ian Gillan on vocals, Ian Pace on drums, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on keyboard and Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. This is the most popular incarnation of the band. You haven't even scratched the surface on this group. You might try Space Truckin or Lazy next.
This was lotsa fun watching with you guys! For me, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were the holy trinity in rock music for me growing up. A relatively recent song by The Darkness has similar sounds and vocals (but very campy and hilarious!) called "I Believe in a Thing Called Love", which is a fun take on this style of rock. ❣
...seems Deep Purple does not get enough credit Kelly...Ritchie is not on nearly enough " best guitarists lists", nor is Ian on enough best vocalist lists, what a great and legendary band.
One of the best songs ever made and the kicker is that they wrote this song in 30 minutes while having an interview before the show on their tour bus. And then they performed it at that show for the first time before ever recording it.
when I was a kid I thought it was Steppenwolf doing Hush, A different singer I believe. The hammond organ and the vocalist sounded similar to the other band.
I'm not usually into hard rock, but this one is just on fire! I have found that that the rock from the 70s were more bluesy and more experimental. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Nazareth etc...were amazing in those days. Later in my era, the rock became more generic.
So true, you should have seen them concert, like I have. I am so glad to lived through the music that was coming out back then! Whole different world now!
@@tenebrisrex333 It was all considered Hard Rock/Heavy Metal in those days. The term Heavy Metal has been redefined over the years as the music has developed and evolved.

One of my most favorite Deep Purple concerts was California Jam. We arrived early, about 7am. Imagine beginning a day of lots of music starting with them. Love, you Love them ❤️
These guys are always top notch. They are also masters of layering instruments to build the sound and rich melodies they use. One of their very best that flies a little under the radar is Knockin at Your Back Door. It a classic layering build up, and has some of the best lyrics. Opening with this. Sweet Lucy was a dancer, but none of us would chance her, because she was a Samouri. Love that line!!!
From the same album (Machine Head) there is another great song called "Pictures of Home". From the later album Perfect Strangers there is a song called "Knocking out your Back Door".
I had heard the studio version over the years many times. One night a friend asked me if I had heard the version from Made in Japan. Apparently not! Holy crap, was it awesome!

This is my favorite guitar solo of all time. Love it!
Deep Purple did an album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. (1970) Music written by keyboardist Jon Lord. ☮💜🎶
Machine Head. One of the best 8-tracks ever!!! The acoustics in my '74 Duster with Jensen speakers were perfect for this song.
This version of Deep Purple features Ian Gillan on Vocals, David Coverdale came later, and even later David Coverdale joined Whitesnake.
Back in the '70s Highway Star used to be our football team's pump-up song at all home games. We loved it, our home crowd loved it.
Oh yeah!! Brought back great memories! It wasn’t a party unless you brought your Deep Purple album!
Widely recognized as one of the best guitar solos ever. So ahead of his time. The whole band were.
I am a 62 year young...
Aussie sheila...lol...
ABSOLUTELY 💯 TRINITY....
and Pink Floyd 💗
...seems Deep Purple does not get enough credit Kelly...Ritchie is not on nearly enough " best guitarists lists", nor is Ian on enough best vocalist lists, what a great and legendary band.
@@julierice100 Of course - Pink Floyd (especially on another level!) ❣
@@raymo6795 It always felt like they were slightly in the shadows - but so iconic and respected!
Yes for me too. My top 3 groups
Deep Purple had most of their success with Ian Gillen as lead singer. David Coverdale found his with Whitesnake.
One of the best songs ever made and the kicker is that they wrote this song in 30 minutes while having an interview before the show on their tour bus. And then they performed it at that show for the first time before ever recording it.
Love the energy and rawness of Deep Purple 💜
this entire album is incredible. legendary
So much energy in this song, some of the coolest soloing too.
You will be amazed how much this band progressed from their first tune. Their career opener was Hush from 1968.
when I was a kid I thought it was Steppenwolf doing Hush, A different singer I believe.
Black Sabbath is Heavy Metal
@@tenebrisrex333 It was all considered Hard Rock/Heavy Metal in those days. The term Heavy Metal has been redefined over the years as the music has developed and evolved.
Wow! Brings back good teenage memories from the 70’s. My brother and I wore this album out! Keep up the nice reactions! 😁😉
This album was recorded in an abandoned hotel using old mattresses for acoustics. On of the best albums ever
...And IanPaice (the drummer) is one of the best drummers on the planet, enjoying not only a place in the Rock & Roll HoF, but the Drummer HoF.
You should watch their 1970 live performance of "Child in Time" You'll enjoy it. Awesome vocals and guitar.
The lead singer here is Ian Gillan not David Coverdale.
One of the best songs for driving - wind blowing and rocking out. Great keyboard solo
Great tune! This is the best lineup of Deep Purple, with Ian Gillian as the singer.
I saw them live in a amphitheater and they opened with this song. They sounded great live.
Thank you guys for playing one of my fav bands. Seen them 6 times live. Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar, Ian Gilan on vocals. Give "Child in Time" 10 min version a listen, unbelievable!
that is on vocals IAN GILLAN (british) DEEP PURPLE (british) david cover version coverdale came later
Amber and Jay you must give DP's Child in TIME a listen. The official video. You'll love it!!
From the same album (Machine Head) there is another great song called "Pictures of Home". From the later album Perfect Strangers there is a song called "Knocking out your Back Door".
The next one HAS TO BE "Lazy"!! Same album and one of my favourites of all time!!
The live version of this song off Made in Japan must be listened to. It is a prime example of how a song improves 10 fold in a concert environment.
💯
Picked up the 45 single of Smoke on the Water, my junior year of High School.
The Live version from Made in Japan was on the B side.
Blown away.
I had heard the studio version over the years many times. One night a friend asked me if I had heard the version from Made in Japan. Apparently not! Holy crap, was it awesome!
I agree, the Made in Japan version is the definitive one, played to perfection. Many bands play certain songs a little differently each live performance, and it's lucky that this particularly stellar performance was captured for us to enjoy.
Yep, best opening track to a live concert of all time in my view
Absolutely one of my favorites by them. Takes me way back.👍👍
The good old days of rock!!!!!!
Awesome band , saw them 3 times in concert something you dont forget , who doesnt like ' high way star ' and theyre british too
