The " Come Taste the Band" album with 🎸 Guitarist Tommy Bolin replaced Blackmore for their last of the 70's ? If not check " Dealer" . Let me know you're thoughts ! I love Bolin and that album is way too overlooked. For me 🔥 start to finish. Not comparing with MKII Purple which I also love. It's just different.
I saw this one twice and the Hughes/Coverdale/Bolin lineup once. I absolutely agree with you but they were both amazing and I could listen to them all day long. I had been listening to Trapeze and Tommy Bolin so I knew what I was getting there but what a surprise the unknown David Coverdale turned out to be!
This album Made In Japan came out in the U.S. in 1973 when I was a junior in high school. I played this to death on every medium available. Album, 8 track, reel to reel. It's a rock and roll classic!!!
Yeah me too this was the very first deep purple album that I ever purchased in cassette form and used to play it non-stop in my car!! Sounds like we're about the same age, I was a junior in 73 also!! As somebody else said the Allman Brothers live album also was another one that I played a lot along with Grand Funk live!!
I don't know if you like Sci Fi but Amazon has a series The Expanse. Season 3 Episode 7 features a cover. It gave me chills to hear it! Born in 60 I had to grow into Deep Purple a bit but My Woman From Tokyo caught me up early!
Ian Gillan is one of the best vocalists of all time. You should really try to listen to Strange Kind Of Woman from Made In Japan. His vocals are incredible not to mention one of the best screams in rock history.
The song behind 10,000 speeding tickets! The day I bought my first guitar, I found a radio station that night the was only playing Deep Purple over night. I air-guitared (WITH a guitar) the hell out of that stuff. That set me down the Purple path for a few years.
The video is from 'Scandinavian Nights', audio from 'Made in Japan'. Shoutout to the great Deep Purple Podcast also on UA-cam, for fans of the band and it's many off-shoots.
My introduction to live Deep Purple was on the King Biscuit Flour Hour. Somewhere, I think I still have the cassette recording I taped off of WMMS. I was amazing, especially Child in Time
The video is from a different show in Copenhagen also from 1972. It was released on DVD. Also, regarding the "I'm a highway star" vocal part, the higher part IS the harmony while the lower part is the main melody. That's why Ian stayed with the lower part.
From what I understand they weren’t into drugs. Just alcohol which is in and of itself a drug. Only Glover liked to smoke weed. Gillan said in an interview that he didn’t smoke his first joint until he was 38.
Everyone in this band was an absolute Beast for the time. Ian Pace was one of the greatest Rock and Roll Drummers to hit a stage. Before the days of great drummers like Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini and Joey Jordison, there was Ian Pace, John Bonham, Dino Donelli, Mitch Mitchell and Don Brewer. They were my early heroes.
I remember hearing Made In Japan for the first time one night. We had all the lights off and had it on full blast. I can't remember what I was on, but what a night.
Ian Gillan absolutely could do it. From this same show check out Strange Kind of Woman for some classic Gillan vocal gymnastics. He matches note for note with Richie Blackmore's guitar and holds a scream for way longer than humanly possible. Great reaction-again.
To me Made In Japan is THE greatest live rock album of all time. Period. The musicianship, the explosive energy, the improvisation, the song quality and the virtuoso performances of five musicians at the peak of their power put this live rock album on top of all others.
OMG. Junior high school days. One of our upper classmen drove us youngers to school in his Camaro. This was one of his 8-tracks. We listened to it a LOT! First time I've seen this live performance. Gotta say, he doesn't look like he's working hard at all. What an epic voice. Great stuff, guys.
The sound is from Made in Japan, but if I'm not mistaken the footage is from a concert in Copenhagen (maybe the same one Lars Ulrich says he was at?). You should be able to find the whole CPH concert somewhere, it's great!
Working the Stones "Bridges to Babylon" shows at Giant's Stadium, we had just gotten off work, building the stage about 2am . Clem , who had been the Stones, Site Manager for years , and I went up to my van to relax. Highway Star comes on the radio and I see a Tear in Clem's eye! In 1972 he had just graduated Highschool and was sweeping floors at SeeFactor in London, one of the first of the big Rock Lighting Suppliers. All the regular crews were out on different tours, and the Deep Purple contract for the Machine Head Tour came in, so after 2 weeks of sweeping, clem was sent on his first World Tour! He toured for the next 25 years....
Guys, you've got to do "Smoke On the Water" from Made in Japan. It is the quintessential version of the song, but for some reason nobody ever reacts to it. It's absolutely S tier.
The video editing in general sucks back then, every so often you get a band shot but much of the time focus on members who are not being featured, what the Hell were they thinking of? I could have done a better job, LOL! At least we have some video evidence of them performing. Cal Jam 74 is much better camera work.
This footage is from another show in Denmark. But! The danish TV people indeed DID film it quite poorly. My theory is, they just didn't know who does what sounds in a rockband... maybe older semesters....
Blackmore was a hard guy to work for. He was a perfectionist and demanded that of others. The Deep Purple guys all adopted and adhered to that work ethic and so fit together like a glove.
To be a teenager in the seventies was awesome! Love the LZ tee, I was at those shows (LZ). I love Deep Purple! Put this song on in your car you may get a speeding ticket!
Ian talked quite often about how he used his vocal range in concert. He saved the highest notes for "Sweet Child in Time" which they performed in most shows(he couldn't do it every night). Listen to the live version...you'll understand.
My favorite album of all time. I'm 65 and heard a lot of them. Lol. I was a teen when this came out. At the time, it was the loudest recorded concert in history. Also on this album is Child In Time, featuring the fastest guitar solo of all time. just an incredible album in every aspect. Only Zeppelin was greater in the rock genre.
When Deep Purple first appeared, they were so unique. Everyone said "Wait! What? Who's that!?!?" They are a classic head banger band. Great song. Car, girl and head....what else do you need?
I wonder if you're familiar w DP's '60s work? Specifically, 'THE BOOK OF TALIESYN'... similar sound sonically, but completely different vibe. It was, loosely, a concept album, based on the legend of King Arthur- according to some legends, Taliesyn was a Welsh wizard/mystic & advisor to the king. Most of the songs contain references to the kingdom, & there's an overlay of mysticism! I recommend 'Listen, Learn, Read On' to start! (BTW, the album is very 'weed-friendly'- LOL!)
The best live recording of one of the best hard rock songs ever. The studio version is great, but this elevates it to another level. This performance is on the bleeding edge of control - amazing. The whole band totally smokes. It doesn't get much better than this.
Palm Beach Int Raceway....early 70's with Savoy Brown and Blue Oyster Cult. I worked at the track, so I got to hide/sit right onstage! This opened their set. It was very loud!
This is so "S" you'd be hissing! It's Deep Purple - nothing more needs to be said. First heard them as a child and I think my brain exploded ... wow! I just sat there with my mouth hanging open. Beyond awesome!
Like the fact you chose to play the live video, it really adds to the experience. Getting to watch Ritchie, Jon, Roger and the two Ian's do their thing is so much fun. And, of course, "Highway Star" is one of Deep Purple's BEST songs, so much energy. Mark II DP rules!
You guys are right, this is footage from a gig in Copenhagen in March 1972 - the Made in Japan gigs were in August. There is supposed to be some silent film of the actual Made in Japan shows but I don't know if anyone has released them or tried to synch them up to the album. They never played the songs exactly the same live which is why it looks weird in places.
In the Made in Japan tour, Gillian and Blackmore weren't talking, they traveled in separate cars and had separate sound checks. Also, the Made in Japan album was released as recorded, there weren't any studio overdubs. One of my favorite live albums.
Certainly an S tier for me, such an intense groove, I don’t know how loud you guys listen but for me this is in the walls shaking end of volume, kinda up there with Jesus Christ Pose
So often in old videos, for some reason the cameraman or the director has no idea who is playing the solo. I wish you do ‘Woman from Tokyo’ by Deep Purple. Great scream by Gillian on that song. Just a great song overall.
I saw Tull, front row back in the late 1970s...you're right Ian is one of the best showmen in rock history. The whole band, actually. Side note: Did you know Ian, who never smoked, has lung cancer & his doctor says it's from performing surrounded by smoke machines onstage for all those years. He hated the smoke but promoters, managers etc insisted it looked "cool" so Ian gave in. Apparently he's not exactly dying of the cancer but what a thing to live with, huh?
Thank you for doing Deep Purple! Ian Gillan has said that he was a bit ill in his throat during the Japan shows on the tour. He also was doing "Child in time" right after "Highway Star". I guess both are good reasons why he wouldn't go to extremes on the first song.
Me singing this at the top of my lungs in my silver '91 Eagle Talon, flyin' down the highway; one of my best memories. I "raced it to the ground". Thanks A & A, let's get more Deep Purple on!
This entire album is a gem.
One of my favorites when I was in high school 1974.
@@LenProbert Same.

@@uncnorseman2670 I'd argue for Allman Brothers Band Live at Fillmore East but Made in Japan ranks as closely as any can.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, being a teenager in the seventies was freakin' awesome!
Truth!
100 % accurate!! I was there, and I’d give anything to go back lol
I was there... in my teens in the '70s. Best decade ever!!!
Amen brother!!
Yeah, in 1973 I saw : Floyd, Ziggy Stardust, ELP, Zeppelin, The Who and Tull.
This lineup is the best, imho, but Ian Paice deserves special kudos. His drumming is impeccable.
Absolutely.
He is one bad ass drummer!
👍👍
micky moody once met me, while the gillan band once supported my rock roadshow in the 80's!!

Ian Gillan is one of the best vocalists of all time. You should really try to listen to Strange Kind Of Woman from Made In Japan. His vocals are incredible not to mention one of the best screams in rock history.
Yeah, he's a bit of a screamer. That's also why he was so good as Jesus. Being whipped so much, and all that...
Gillan is definitely a gifted vocalist! ❤️ Gillan! The entire band is incredibly talented!
Yep, that's what I suggested to. Strange Kind Of Woman. The interplay between Gillian's vocals & Blackmore's guitar is just fantastic.
One of the best screams? It’s the best ever.
Hard to believe Terry Reed was their first choice for vocalist and Gillian was second, great as Reed is I like Gillian better
The song behind 10,000 speeding tickets!

No Auto-tune, computers or Pro Tools in sight. Just alcohol and drugs. Pure madness and greatness.
From what I understand they weren’t into drugs. Just alcohol which is in and of itself a drug. Only Glover liked to smoke weed. Gillan said in an interview that he didn’t smoke his first joint until he was 38.
AMEN!!! PURE ROCK and ROLL!!! GOD: JUST SO GOOD!
No drugs here.
Sex, drinks and rock'n'roll was the theme for this version of Deep Purple 😉
Drugs came with Tommy Bolin and Glenn Hughes - and them only...

One of the Best Live Performances and Live Albums ever *. "Lazy" is my favorite, but all the tracks are extraordinary. *😉
