I love vids like this - it's not just about stockpiling material, it's also thinking about how to get the best return on the effort. The better you can sort it, the more you can pocket, and the happier your scrap lot is with you, as well.
Hey Ben, Great video again! I have wanted to know exactly how to separate my different grades of copper, aluminium and brass for the past few weeks, and low and behold, you just made a video for exactly what I needed. I now know what I have to separate so thank you very much for that! Cheers!
That's good to help encourage beginners who maybe haven't accumulated a certain item enough to bring in and they might be a little shy to ask the scrap yard the price. So very good vid, it helps those in Australia and everywhere to get out and make some extra money! 👍👍
I really appreciate all that you do for us. I live in the United States and prices are dropping for some metals and going up for other metals. I work a 40+ hours job so I don't get to scrap as much. I try to go scrapping at night after I get off work. Then I come home and work to break it down and separate it. I have to wait till my next day off to take it into the scrap yard and get paid. It's extra money, so I'm happy. And to think that I used to pick up trash (mostly metal) and I threw it away because I didn't know that I could get paid for it. I kept wishing that I could get paid for it. I mentally kick myself for not knowing and think about what I had and I wonder how much money I could have made. Then I say, "Nothing I can do about it now". And then I refocus on looking for scrap on the road and side of the road.
I know what you're saying... I work on foot, outdoors, find all sorts of stuff, pick it up. Once there was a brass sousaphone. It had been run over. I got $48 USD for it. But I'm still sitting on my copper: www.visualcapitalist.com/copper-driving-green-energy-revolution/
I find myself scanning around as I drive to and from work, looking for a CRT or water heater or dryer, etc. by a dumpster. Who wouldn’t stop and pick up $5-10 sitting by the side of the road? I can’t go out of my way too much because it’s not worth the gas/time. There’s a big apartment complex by my house that must be replacing all the water heaters lately. Before or after work, I’ll make a quick loop through the parking lot and throw in a water heater in the back of my truck, pull off the brass and aluminum real quick and take the water heaters to one of the yards which are not very out of my way at all, and save up the brass for later. I get one or two a week! So I get paid $5-10 for tin scrap during my lunch break or whenever. I got a bucket of brass collecting too. Gotta have tools in the truck. Wire cutters, screw drivers, hammer, monkey wrench, pliers, crescent wrench.
eWaste Ben, I know you know this but just telling others. I used to buy Military e-scrap at auctions in the 1980-1990 time frame. I usually had two to five scrapping dealers to sell my products to. I would call them up about every other week and get their prices. It was amassing to see how much the prices would vary over time and between dealers. It would depend on what was needed in their markets. If you can hold the stuff for a little while, you can sell when the market is on an up swing. Love your videos. Keep making them please.
Great info, not a million miles away from prices here in Ireland. Steel all goes in one pile here in cork, including cast. Non ferrous metals have loads of price and sorting grades. Same here as anywhere for copper, cable with core thicker than pencil lead definitely worth stripping and hording. Happy scrapping! 😁
Hello Ben, Sweden here again. I use two yards in my town depending on what I have to turn in. One yard pays high grade wire if more then 60% cu. The other yard only if I have +100kg high grade, it balances out on prices on electric motor and circuitboards as they pay better.
Hey Ben, my scrapyard lumps all wire into one category and all copper into one category. Since I have small quantities of each type I probably do ok. Thanks for sharing
The three main grades of copper where I’m at always seems to be about 0.10/lb. from each other, i.e. bare bright $2.25/lb., #1 @ 2.15, and #2 @ 2.05 or even less like 1.90/lb. So I don’t do that “soak in cola trick” to get en extra $1.00 when the 2 L soda costs a dollar. Brass is always good, doesn’t matter to them if it’s nickel coated or has some copper pipe on it, it’s all yellow brass to them if you file it and see yellow. They do sometimes rummage through the bucket of all the plugs and faucets with a magnet though. Otherwise I gotta separate the irony brass or get all the screws out.
Thanks Ben. I definitely need to find a new scrap yard cause here in Rome/NY/USA. At Rubicon Recycling, they don't give us nearly those prices at all. I'm guessing cause you are an Island Country that is the reason for your amazing returns. Aluminum here is a flat 35 cents. Steel is considered tin and goes for 8 cents a pound. Definitely need to find a new yard if there is one
You're not very good at conversions. Your 35 cents/pound is 77 cents per kilo. Then your 77 US cents is $1.06 AUD. In other words, you're getting MORE for your Al in NY than he is in Australia.
I'm from Perth too mate. I've been saving up all my non-ferrous due to the present prices. Steel just isn't worth the hassle at the moment as most yards don't pay for it. My area, Bibra Lake had hard rubbish collection a couple of weeks ago and I put all my light steel out on the verge, must have been about half a ton. Someone took all of it.👍
I did a a quick test on stripping some of that wire I stripped a 420 grams I ended up with 220 grams of copper It's £1 per kg for that wire unstripped And its £3.80 a kg stripped So If you calculate it up you double your money
Keep on scrapping and I look forward to many more videos. Will send you my scrap gold if you want it. Don't have the time nor the equipment to melt it down. Let you know when I have a full tub if you're interested. Just my way of saying thanks
Ben ...Very good price for the copper . ¡¡¡ .....Here in Chile pay only for the scrap copper US $ 4.0 x Kg .... all at the same price ....except the burning Cable.....for this pay only US$ 2.5 x kg best regards From Chile
Great knowledge here interesting stuff. I just leave all my scrap metal outside the house for people like this to collect so get's rid of my junk and someone makes some cash out of it and it's nice that it gets recycled instead of going to landfill.
my local scrapyard is terrible as they won't take white goods or electronics even insulated wire isn't part of the remit but given that it was my grandfather's dealer and then my father's dealer and it was mine when I could get cast brass in relative bulk so i made okay money but with the electronics likely to be a big part of the waste clearnce field i might had to look elsewhere and break the sentiment
hey bud,5th time watching this lol, question:is extension cords and normal power cords from appliances graded as high grade insulated wire? and will it be graded again if i strip them?
Most cords you see are mid grade insulated wire, around 32% copper. If you strip them it becomes pure copper wire, but you won't get much more cash because mid grade insulated goes for about 32% of pure copper price, so if it's just for money than best to sell as is, without the plugs as clean mid grade.
@@eWasteBen thanks mate, appreciate the info.never wanted to part with any copper but missed a days work this week so just making up the loss. cheers mate🍻
I'm convinced by evidence that Ottawa Ontario Canada has very low prices compared to other cities nearby (200km). Every one else scrapping on UA-cam matter where gets more. Even Montreal and Sudbury, Hamilton all get 25-35% more all across the board. Other countries also get more. Can't figure out why
It is all about the cities location. If your city is 200 km away from the other cities that pay more for your scrap, they figure you would rather dump off your scrape to them at the lower price, then to drive the 200 km away that pays a few cents more for the scrap. They do it because they can, there are no laws that forces a recycler to pay the set scrap prices. I have the same problem here in Madison,Wisconsin. The recycling center here pays out around 10 cents less per pound of a scrap item then the larger scrap yards in Illinois or Indiana do. So i save everything i can find for a year,.copper, steel, aluminum, brass, computer boards, for an entire year, then i truck the scrap out of state to a recycler that does pay higher prices.
GreatScott thank you. Earlier this year Montreal was paying twice the amount for iron at $345 MT and close to twice the amount for copper and brass. At 200KM away I thought it even worth it to truck steel. The price is going down now though.
i was just wondering since ur a scrapper and obviously have reputation with ur yard do u get better prices if u bring in more to their yard or is it always set rates? im not talking mates rates but rather since u keep coming back to their yard to cash in do u get a bonus per kilo u bring in? like an incentive to come back
Not really, it's pretty much set rates but they will give a good price occasionally like the low grade wire, it should of been a lot less, you can negotiate price if you have large volumes, like 1 tonne of something other than steel, you can get a better price but my yard pays about the highest price anyway.
@@eWasteBen Do you ever weigh the stuff first so that you can see if there's any difference between your scales and their's? I've done that a few times and I think the scrap yard I'm going to have scales that are off or inaccurate?
They quit buying burnt copper here back in '08 when no.1 bright hit 4 a lb no.,2 was 1.75. the thieves were stealing everything they could lay their hands on and burning it to destroy evidence.

Yep - PC cases, dvd shells, etc are what I call "incidental scrap steel" meaning I didn't get the item just for that, and can make good buckets for all the screws, latches, etc from other scrapping.
about 10 years ago my uncle's did it and I just got roped in then they got pushed out and family issues forced them to give it up but I kept doing a little bit (one load bought me GTA 4) and have looked at it again but more to be part of the trimmings from the waste clearance market especcally with sheds and garages

They love to pull it off onto the ground and change the quoted price...also they dont want to tell you this. There is NO loyalty to "regular customers".
Those prices would be great, I dropped off about 400kg of scrap steel to my steel scrapper a few weeks ago and got $2 for it. I am about 2 1/2 hrs away from melbourne in a small city, I know that they are a huge rip off, but all we have is some old bloke that comes out.. looks at your load and say's "ehhh, that's about 2 bucks worth" no scales, no weights, nothing. So from now on when I do my scrapping, if I persay have 200g of plastic and its got 1 screw left in it, ill throw that into scrap steel. From doing some quick math I estimated I was getting half a cent per kilo, that doesn't even pay for half the fuel I used to go to the scrap yard.

Yep that's HMS same as Cast Iron, 27c Kg
hi Ben great explanatory video again, how can you tell if its irony alloy or not? thanx !
it just regular alloy with steel bits on it, some people take off steel bits, just depends how much time you want to spend,

Put your best stuff up by head board behind cage where they cant reach it..negotiate FIRST..then unload..otherwise it stays on truck
