In my comment I describe how I would use a split Boot and never have a problem with it back in the nineties. The big thing is you did not have to take anything apart. If you're going to take apart this far well rebuild the shaft with new CV joints or just replace it. Of course you better check and probably should only pull one shaft at a time and be sure to put the plug in so not to screw up the alignment or lose fluid. It all depends on the car. Like the old Mitsubishi in the Dodge 600 and what have you. You did one side at a time.
Back in the early 90's when I became an auto mechanic, they sold speedy repair boot. The problem with putting a new boot on an axle that has split open, is all of the moisture and dirt that got into the axle while it was open. You have gone this far into reairing the boot, just spend the extra $100-$150 and replace the axle. Or you will be replacing it anyway in a year when the dirt wears out the joint
So if your axle you got not too long ago, or is in good condition, needs a boot, throw it away? Uh, no. Change the boot. There is something called brake cleaner. As for the gluing, many cv boots are glued. There's cyanoasghu cv n g in glue (super glue) and well agents (rubber vulcanizing glue). With no gaps, it'll last years.
@@modifiedmechanix I have a shop. Most axles are nearly shot by the time they get a "boot service". They have usually been ripped for at least enough time for the grease to fling out and dirt to contaminate them. What's that tool cost 400 bucks. What do you charge to put the boot on? From what the video looks like you have to take off the same amount or more to get the room for the tool. One more step and the old worn out axle is popped out and the new one can be installed. I dont see the value in this. Constant velocity shaft should be replaced 90 percent of the time! Replacing the boot is a hack job. I have also seen ripped boots caused by metal from the CV coming apart from the inside.
@name-less7268 these would be normally be used on one's that were noticed in routine maintenance or just happened to caught before any click or damage could be felt. We get alot of mud and hunting rigs in and it's normally a puncture from brush or rocks wouldn't suggest it to a shop that doesn't less than 5 or 6 a week buts its makes its money back after you do a couple
Back in the eighties and specialty through the nineties they used to sell a split boot. You did not have to take anything apart. And the secret was to Put ATV clear silicone to 25-year version. Put it along that scene and then screw it together with the little screws that came with it. Then I would use Gates water and heater hose clamps plus a ATV at both ends and let us set a couple of days. Remember back then Gates clamps were fantastic! But I never had one of them to leak. How to do it for other people without any guarantees and usually on the weekends or when I had two days off in a row. Have them come back for the car 4 days after I was finished. I think I only charge anywhere from 35 to 50.00 plus the $7 for the boot. It was good spending money. If I was going to take this apart this far I would probably just pull the axle put the plug in. Replace the whole axle or at least the CV joints and not just the boots 👢. But I love this tool that this guy has
It's definitely easier than this looks. This looks like it's a big pain in the ass! Also this way only works with the rubber CV boots. The plastic ones will tear apart
All these master mechanics in the comments that never had to deal with an axle that just refuses to come out Also if you catch the leaking axle early you wont have to replace it with a $80 axle that vibrates and starts to click after 2 years Well done, I would suggest both boots so you can pull it off the female inner end if you dont have the tool
And the $80 axle are Chinese made crap that will break in a few months. You are better off keeping your factory made axle and just replacing the boot if you joints are still good
That's definitely one way to do it and have done 100s that way. But always at the worst time a clip breaks or shoots across the shop. Iv seen them seize in the diff and so on. This saves a few minutes, which adds up for the mechanic and potentially saves lots of vehicle downtime for the customer
Until you're averaging 20-50 a week. The mechanic that gets paid by the job comes out ahead and the customer vehicle down time is reduced dramatically by not waiting on parts and saves hundreds of dollars compared to some of the new axles
Yeah I’m kinda confused is this a tool for if you forgot to put the boot on before hand?? How much was that? Did you repurpose something? Where’d you get it? Why in the hell would anyone need that? Wouldn’t it be cheaper and easier to buy a brand new axle? Who rebuilds cv axels??

Personally, as a mechanic, it’s just easier to replace the axle. Definitely interesting how they put it on though 😏👍
The use case for this is if rebooting is ~$80 but the axle itself is $800, especially if you want to stay OEM instead of going aftermarket
