I vote for aluminum door. As much as I love brass, I don’t think the door should draw attention to itself. Brass for the hinges and handle will already be attractive enough. KISS. 😉👍 Thanks for sharing, Joe.

If the door is going to be painted, then it really doesn't matter what it's made from, so I'd say aluminum for the door. Hinges could be blued steel or bright brass, not sure what color it will be painted.

I’d go for aluminium door with brass hinges and handle. From memory none of the other models have had a brass door and I agree with Rootvalue in that it’s a door not a main feature, but as always it’s a personal opinion. Sometimes understated is more impactful than ‘in your face’.
I had thought the tabs on the right were for cam locks to hold the door closed so you didn’t need to mill an undercut for the tab. Prefer your shelving solution though.
Great video Joe, as always, looking forward to your next. Cheers, Nick

  • @stumccabe

I think the door should be aluminum/aluminium - reason: on the fill sized machine the body and the door would both be made of the same material. A brass door would make it look like a shiny toy rather than a model! (To be honest I'd prefer that the PM Research models were cast iron.) Thanks for another excellent video Joe.
PS If you wanted to invisibly fill the porosity of this aluminium casting you could make a filler of fine aluminium powder and epoxy - super fine aluminium powder is available from "cold casting" suppliers like "Smooth-On" in the US or Alec Tiranti in the UK.

Being that I'm an old Jeweller/Goldsmith, I think do the door "hinges & handle" in brass & the door itself in blasted aluminium.
That's based on the assumption other elements like gears & dials will be in the brass, so the door fixtures compliment them.

I would machine the door from brass with a half-round beaded edge as on the casting originally. The center of the door has to be milled out to make the interior portion of the beading. Polish the beading for a high contrast. The recessed center of the door would be painted with the same paint used on the majority of the machine. Use painted hinges with a polished brass handle. Terrific job as usual. It is a joy to watch you build things.

    Hi Joe, thanks.
Alli or dural door, bead blasted so the blast grit doesnt get engrained (captured) in the door surface.
Must have a polished brass handle but don't like alli hinges.
    So brass or steel hinges.
    Steel may seize with time.
    So it's brass hinges.
Key for the door- lock must be stainless steel.

    Joe, I have a request.
I am not a machinist. I am a mechanically inclined, home garage D.Y.I.-er. Throughout my many decades of drilling and tapping, l have never understood the relationship between drill speed and size/different materials/and when to lube or not lube the operation. The same with lubing when tapping. As I watch your videos sometime you lube when drilling, sometimes you don’t.
Realizing this could be a complex subject, my request from you would be maybe a “rule of thumb” or basics video to explain some of this. I’m sure it could be helpful to many of us out there.

  • @oldfarthacks
    @oldfarthacks 7 місяців тому

Hi Joe. Nice video, some good stuff there. As to the door, Aluminum. The reason is for paint retention and the potential of paint failure. The real machine is of course cast iron, but a scrape on the paint will have both the door and base looking the same. In the model, a scrape that reveals what we would expect to be cast iron as brass would look funky.
The locking handle and hinges could be bronze or brass on the prototype, so the same applies here. Or for that matter, ZInc or pot metal.

Should have left the machine body solid for heavy duty, (Cutting ability with out chatter). If its going to be a (spare tool), add a big door to Magain extra attraction and Sparkle, for a short period before, becoming an annoyance. Paint it a ginger winger out cast color. No shelves, more space will be required, and keep out of sight. As a manual machinist i could only hope to have you're skill in reading a plan and setup, now at 55 i wish you had been my mentor.

Hey Joe, late to the show. The door is a great idea. Of course your using an AL door but we all know that’s the best idea. I was surprised at the porosity of the casting. As these are pin holes in AL, the cause is gassing. Al is prone to gassing and there are tricks using salts of various types to reduce gassing. JB weld may be the best solution to filling these cosmetic pores.
