    I've been watching so many unwrapping tutorials as a beginner and this is the only one I've seen where I can actually follow what I'm watching - thank u for this

      Thanks! Yeah everyone wants to dive immediately into the unwrapping algorithms and marking seams and stuff. Doesnt really explain how it works and can get frustrating. Not enough people are teaching the absolute basics.

    what is the usual process when creating the texture like in this example? Do you draw it with the 3D shape in mind from the start in something like acesprite?

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  10 місяців тому

      Usually yes and yes I use aseprite though you can use whatever art program you like. I typically take the 3D shape into consideration as I am drawing on my UV map. I try to imagine it unfolded flat kind of like a papercraft before you assemble it.
      Now, this tutorial isnt the best on demonstrating that process since I skip it. Its not the best for people making complex objects who cant visualize it unfolded in their minds before UV unwrapping. Personally, I usually tend to draw the texture while I UV unwrap, so every shape I unwrap I draw/texture in before I move to the next. This tutorial however was just to get the basic ideas across for beginners how UV mapping works. I am actually recording a "How to draw textures for low poly" tutorial right now that should cover those how to's in much more depth but It wont be out for a bit as of posting this.

    Is exporting the UV Layout going to work for something like Unity?

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  Рік тому +1

      It should! You may need to make sure your import settings for your object in unity are set correctly. But by default it should be fine.

    Thanks mate, this video helped alot! I have one question; is it common to make a texture before uv unwrapping? I have been making the model first THEN drawing the texture onto the uv map. Idk if what I'm doing is bad practice.

      No you're doing it right

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  11 місяців тому +4

      Either or, I tend to do mine while I unwrap or sometimes after. There's no right answer, its whatever you're comfortable with.

    Hi, I really love your video, but one day can you make how to make in aseprite textures for your low poly?

      Its in the works. It actually keeps getting delayed due to work. But its going to be coming up.

  • @PsychoJosh

    Aren't you doing this backwards? You have a texture ready before you have a UV map. How do you know where to place objects on the texture before having the map laid out?

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  8 місяців тому +1

      The object is extremely simple, Im showing some things you can do the guess work and work your UVs around a texture instead. Not an uncommon thing to do for objects specially simple ones. This is also one of my first tutorials, some details I leave unexplained unfortunately which doesnt make the best example. These details I have to learn from for making future tutorials. The upcoming UV tutorial will show UV mapping then texturing for complex objects.

  • @stuff3862
    @stuff3862 11 місяців тому

    Been having trouble uv mapping out objects that aren't perfectly straight so when I go to paint the pixels are sometimes diagonal.

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  11 місяців тому +4

      Ah, this is something I am addressing in an upcoming tutorial for low poly character modeling and texturing. A lot of those issues come from the UV shape itself being warped or over stretched. Sometimes splitting the quad on the object you are UV mapping into two triangle helps either resolve this or at least shows what part of the UV shape is having issues.
      I know this isnt a clear response/answer. Without having a visual, I cant give a clear instruction on resolving your issue specifically. If you want more direct help, feel free to bug me over on twitter. I dont have a Q&A Email set up yet, but its in the works as well.
