hey, nice to see you try out blockbench! just wanted to add a quick tip from someone that has used blockbench often: You can hold shift for .25 increments, and hold both ctrl/cmd and shift for .025 increments
@@BJGpixel yup; i mean, it's just combining both! Also might as well add: for cuboids, you can just create a normal cube then scale it to any size you want with the button next to the "create mesh" diamond (also if you right click, you can later convert it to a mesh, if needed!)
I have a problem in blockbench, when I make a cube smaller than one, it gives an error, and when I set the error to per view, I have a problem with the texture. Pls help me
7:44 - The reason the gird didn't look pixel perfect is because the old UV map was showing, you crunched a 5 pixel tall wall into a 2 pixel tall space (when making one half of the pokeball at 3:19). When you create a new texture, the texture density is recalculated via smart UV-ing but doesn't automatically update the grid on screen which might actually be a bug.
Ah interesting, that makes a lot of sense - thanks for the insight! I'll have to keep an eye on that, and the other thing I realized later (which I didn't try yet!) was to also adjust the coordinates of the mapped faces on the UV map if I wanted to change the mapping
More than a bug it kind of make sanse too you know? Imagine one of that satisfying slime videos where the slime has a stamped image in it, if the slime gets squished or stretched the stamped image will stretch/squish with the object so, take the image as the mesh representation.
Are you referring to the flickering of certain parts of the model? It looks like a case of the phenomenon called "Z fighting" and definitely adds to the retro aesthetic!
Looks like Z-fighting to me. Which is weird since I'm pretty sure none of the pieces are overlapping, unless he accidentally duplicated those buttons and then only painted one of them properly.
I have to say, I really appreciate tutorials that take something intimidating and make it simple. I have always been terrified of 3D modelling because there's just so many buttons and vertices and settings- but this made it feel very approachable for an absolute beginner.
I'm quite impressed with how well you explained it being a beginner. Lots of useful features that took me a long time to figure out myself when I started using blockbench explained very simply for beginners. Wish I had this when I started.
glad to see a video on blockbench!! ive tried modeling in it several times before, but was unable to overcome the extreme poly restrictions after using blender. thanks for showing us this workflow!
Great video! As a low-poly pixel artist I have been using blockbench for a while now, and it’s really interesting to see your approach! The end result looks great
I think this tutorial is really well done. I appreciate that you've edited in extra clarifications and information. You've pleasant demeanor and explain your process well, this makes it hard to get bored throughout!
My god, I love using Blender but I hate doing these types of designs with Blender even though I love the 3d pixel art look just cause of how tedious and how many plugins I needed to do literally what looks to be base features in block bench. Simply wonderful, will try it out.
Heyo, Blockbench modeler here. Preety much all of the mesh tools are very new (and a little buggy too!) For anyone trying to use blockbench, I suggest that you start with the cubes instead of the meshes, as they are way eaiser to work with and are compatible with Minecraft, rather than meshes which are not. Another thing I saw was some z-fighting in your finished model. This is caused by overlap between different cubes/meshes. You can advoid this in a generic model by ever so slightly ofsetting them, or just by keeping them (The overlaping pixels) the same color. It looks like you got the hang of it preety well though, and explained it very eaisly for anyone trying out blockbench!
Blockbench is a fantastic program for low poly modeling and with new features like mirror modeling its constantly getting better! Recently I even made a model for a Mario 64 PC mod with Blockbench
Wtf I JUST downloaded the software and was looking for tutorials when i see this show up in my feed. What are the chances! Thanks for the awesome tuts as always ^^
One thing I would to add. You can turn off the shadows in the upper right corner by clicking on the light bulb, this will allow you to better see the original colors when painting
Dude, of all the years on youtube, how did I not find you any earlier. This is awesome! Keep up the good work. You’ve finalized my decision on pixel art-style for my game. Cheers!
You probably won't see this but THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I'm beginning 3d art/modeling/animation for real this time and I needed this simple tutorial on Blockbench since I want to make low poly art for my game!
ok, this is the first 3D modeling software that doesn't crash every time I leave it open for more than 10 seconds. Also, thanks for the tutorial, I hope I manage to do something at least decent today.
This is gonna be my new favorite tool. I love how you made the models in the style of the OG Pokemon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow texture style. This can legit be put in a Pokémon 3d game
Loved the vid, love Blockbench, would love to see more videos on it! When I started using it finding videos on the program was pretty difficult. Glad to see more people checking it out and making content about it!
Awesome introduction to Block Bench, I've never heard of this one before but it looks really nice, I like how modern the UI looks! Coming from a small Blender background, it looks like it has all the tools you'd need for making the assets it specializes in. It's incredible how great software like this are made available for free (and open source too!!) I really wish more industries with expensive software solutions would follow. 😌 The Pokeball & Dex came out looking great too! The detail with the sphere & tube is a very cool addition indeed! Also, the wireframe looked pretty crazy on the CRT! Was that the same clip earlier in the video? 😱
Thanks dude! Yeah I was impressed with how accessible this was - and fills an interesting space between picoCAD and Blender :D And yeah, that was the same animation sequence - the wireframe version has really thin lines and ended up with artifacting from filming - I was hoping to recover more detail in post-processing but really ended up being a cool effect either way!
@@BJGpixel Season 2 of PicoCAD to Blender sure is off to a great start! 🤩 I'm glad the wireframe recovery on the CRT didn't work out cuz it ended up looking rad as heck! 😎
Thanks for your awesome videos! You’ve been a massive inspiration for me and I’ve learned so much from your channel. After being introduced to Aseprite and now Blockbench, I’ve spent a lot of time with them and I’ve made some stuff I’m really happy with from the advice you’ve given in your videos. Your stuff is seriously underrated. Keep up the great work!
Hey, Brandon! Super excited to finally see you try out this amazing application! I started off playing with Blockbench about 2 years ago and in the process, I was hired by a big team as a Fulltime 3D Modeler. There's so much more you can do with Blockbench and the community is fairly big. I hope to see more work from you with Blockbench!
I only recently started using Blockbench 3 days ago and now I get to see my favorite artist start working on this program as well, its really cool to think about what you'll make in the future
I literally juat learned about this program yesterday from mortmort and i sooo wanna try it! I love making low poly pixel art in blender but this looks like a fun program to experiment with

thanks so much for introducing me to this software! i tried blender many times and found it so complicated and difficult to use.. this is much simpler and allows me to much more easily access the tools i want to use to make models!
I remember back in highschool, the first thing we were tasked with making in our tech class was a Pokeball. Good model for learning the basics of a program
Nice! I'm very happy to see you use blockbench, since it's a really good low-poly software and isn't very overwhelming like blender for me. i've used it for a while now, some trial and error to understand the mesh when it was new but i've had a hang of it, it's really good for beginners. also, a small thing here, you can add your reference image with the background, there's the 3 line thing at the top right next to the light (for toggling shadows or not) and paste your reference image. this is very helpful if you don't want to switch tabs between your image and model. there may be more stuff i haven't known yet, but that's the fun of learning, discovering stuff that will help you more!
Oh. My. God. I am so glad I watched this video. I am so glad I got to 15:00 right in the middle of going through the positions and adding *2 to the end and then scaling everything up after. This is going to halp making my data pack so much easier
I'm going to be honest, I learned more on how to use this app from this video than actual tutorial videos. I don't know why. I feel like I can start 3D modeling right now and just go fucking ham. And I'm going to starting tomorrow.
this is so rad! been wanting to get into 3d modeling for a while, have dabbled very very lightly with magicavoxel and recently blender, but this is right up my alley! definitely gonna have to give this a whirl soon. great video and art as always man!
What an amazing piece of software. It feels like a more streamlined/focused version of blender. Blockbench is essentially what Aseprite is for pixel art, but for low-poly modeling instead.

Crocotile is nice too, have you tried it? Very different workflow where you build out of your drawn assets in single tiles. Pretty fun!!!
Thank you (and the YT algorithm) for introducing me to Blockbench. It seems to be exactly what I was looking for to create some low poly models for my projects. The only other option until now was Blender, which is way too much overkill for that kind of stuff.
I wish I heard of this sooner because I spent a lot of time making low poly models for various props in my last animation project. Seems a lot quicker to do in blockbench than blender if only for being able to skip the UV mapping.
its 100% is, I always hated doing UV mapping in blender when I had to do pixel textures but ever since i discovered blockbench i now do anything pixel and low poly in blockbench now :)
I'm gonna have to give this a try. For awhile I was trying to replicate the Mega Man Legends aesthetic in Blender, but it felt cumbersome trying to use something so robust to create a very primitive 3D model. A program stripped down to create only low-poly models like this is perfect.
Oh my gosh this is amazing, I was just about to try to learn blender, but this is waaaaay more up my alley and has the exact style I was looking for the game I'm making 🤩Thank you!╰(*°▽°*)╯

You can apply most of this video to blender, since it has the same tools. Also in blender you can set the pivot point to a specific vertex and in loop cut if you use the mouse wheel it increments the number of cuts.
I love the blockbench aesthetic and it’s such an easy to use modeling tool, I actually wish one day they’d add rigging tools and mesh deformations to the animation capabilities, for people like me who are going for low poly but not quite Minecraft blockiness
That's a really neat piece of software! Might just be what I need. I have some questions which hopefully you can answer now or in a possible follow-up video: 1) Is animation possible/beginner friendly with it? 2) Is there a way to import and assign pre-made pixel art? If so, what do you have to keep in mind for mapping it on correctly (i.e. how to make sure that the face has enough pixels for the applied art)? Your vids are a real joy and made me more active in pixel art and try 3D modeling!
1) Yes it's possible and beginner friendly 2) Yes There is a playlist with tutorials on Blockbench on the UA-cam channel Hawkon, they are short and full of information, but he did not go deep into editing meshes
Thanks! Yes you can do animation; it works on a system of keyframes; where you define the start and end points of a movement, and then it creates the in-between frames to connect those two points as a smooth motion. Hoping to explore that in a future vid! As for artwork, I've seen people edit the texture file externally, like in Photoshop/Aseprite, then import back to Blockbench. Haven't tried this workflow myself, but I imagine that it'd be easiest to generate the UV in Blockbench (so you get the unfolded shape/faces), then take that over into editing. If you had a pre-existing texture file, I'm sure you could still map it, but might be more labour-intensive with having to adjust the coordinates for each face of the object manually. Again, haven't tried - but that's my best guess!
I have been using Blockbench for over years. It is cool that more people are discovering this awesome tool. The only thing I am waiting for now is bone support for animation. I honestly like how the animator works here as opposed to Blender but this singular limit is a slight obstacle since I am working on a game. My biggest problem now is the amount of time I "wasted" making models versus learning programming for 2 years. I am an established 3d modeler from Blockbench but I can't code a lick on my own XD
CRT Time usually isn't the highlight of a video for me, but this one was particularly beautiful! Those wireframe textures at the start reminded me of the Sonic OVA
About to use this for the first time. This seems like it's going to be exactly what I needed. Takes a weight off my chest for developing games. Blender is way to complex for me. Great video, liked and subbed. :D
hey, nice to see you try out blockbench! just wanted to add a quick tip from someone that has used blockbench often: You can hold shift for .25 increments, and hold both ctrl/cmd and shift for .025 increments

There is a playlist with tutorials on Blockbench on the UA-cam channel Hawkon, they are short and full of information, but he did not go deep into editing meshes
@@Malex-mj9ie I'll look those up, thanks!
Finally, a 3D modeling software in which it does not take 758 centuries to perform a basic task.
One could easily make this model in a few minutes in Blender or Maya.
I'm decent at Blockbench but not even i knew some of these things! gonna try and make things i struggled to before. like that Loop Cut tool!
thank you so much for showing how to create textures! ivw been struggling to do it since i started, and this helped so much.
Absolutely awesome work dude!
This was incredible, and really inspired me to pick up blockbench!
This was very helpful... more helpful than the other tutorials. Keep Pixel arting
I love it! Thanks for introducing us to such softwares. I loved playing around with PicoCad, and I'm definitely going to give this one a go too. 😊
This looks really interesting! Just downloaded it, really glad it's got a desktop version.
Thanks for the Tutorial, Brandon! I can finally start doing low-poly models :D
I really love how this looks!
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD TUTORIAL T___T YOU TEACH HOW TO SHADING TOO ILY TYSM
From the bottom of my heart I thank you for this great tutorial, god bless u bro :)
