Hey Steven! Just thought I’d share. I’m 58 always wanted to learn the drums. I’m finally allowing myself that opportunity and I want to thank you for sharing these. You’ve helped alot. I’ve been learning for only two months. Just wanted to say thank you!
I've been drumming now for about 3 months and have been living on UA-cam watching drum lessons. I've been learning some hard crazy fills that are fun to play by themselves but can't figure out how to put them at the end of a grove. It's so great knowing I've always got you to show me things that are really musical and that I can actually use in a lot of situations. Thanks buddy.
James Fulmer You bet James. I love the complicated stuff too...you just don’t get the opportunity to use it on stage very much. But fills like these? They’re crucial. Glad you’re getting so much out of the free stuff my friend!
I've been stuck for years on playing the same 2-3 drum fills over and over again. Thank you for these ideas! You're the best drum teacher UA-cam has to offer.
Excellent! You are a great teacher! I have been a church drummer for 34 years, and the last lesson I had was in high school. I have developed many "habits", some of them not so good. I have been at a plateau for quite some time now. I look forward to watching more of your videos and replacing some of my sloppy techniques with polished ones. Thanks for sharing these!
Bought a kit , as a second instrument, about five years ago. The word got out and I actually got a call to fill-in for two sets in place of a band's regular drummer. Anxious to be viewed as solid, and replaying in my head all of the UA-cam tips , I pulled Pat and Debbie from the toolbox. Sparingly.....but know that in my 'big moment' Stephen, you were there with me....ty..... and fyi- the band leader was pleased overall.
Killer lesson. Thanks again and again for including the "I think I can" fill, many teachers often skip it as they think it's too simple but the dynamics building of that fill is actually much harder to get right than it seems. All these fills are just wonderful

Really happy to hear you keep the focus on music, I'm a bit older, I started playing drums with an LP then an 8 track...8 track was better because the kick didn't make the record skip! I played music in school but not percussion, that gave me 2 scholarships in College and allowed me to play drums with my attempted music degree since I didn't do well in Business. Music is why we play and drums are my first passion to play with music, I started drums when I was 11, I am almost 52 now...so ya been a minute and your videos are an inspiration to so many and thank you for keeping at it!! David
Great little lesson. Been playing 30+ years with a sizable break in the middle. Been trying to unlearn, relearn, and fix some bad habits while finessing and rehearsing the little things. I'm a fill monster and this is good to keep me reeled in and on point. Take pause and revisit the baby steps.
I'm mostly a guitar player, but recently have picked drums back up for certain gigs and producing my own music. you've got a subscriber man! You're eloquent and easy to watch, makes for an enjoyable and deeper experience. Peace!
I liked them all. I'm starting to play, a few months now just dabbling, but I'm gonna get my first ever big break playing for my church on Sunday. Because the other drummer will be out of town for Thanksgiving, so I'm the back up. Pretty cool man. Thanks for everything, you're an awesome teacher and I learn a lot from you. Keep doing what you're doing.
I liked your comment about not putting an exclamation mark at the end of every sentence. I tell young drummers that all the time - and anyone who will listen - that a lot of drumming is about punctuation, so listen to the phrasing of the song - and even the lyrics - to judge just when a fill is needed, and if one is really needed at all. The perfect fill - IMHO - has to lie somewhere between Phil Rudd and Phil Collins! :D
Great lesson Stephen! You are quite an excellent teacher. I'm a guitar player/teacher who can play drums fairly competently but I've only occasionally taught them which I find quite challenging. I've recently gotten a gig which involves doing a 1hour weekly drum lesson with a 7 year old who seems to have a good sense of rhythm and is a good kid. However his focus wears thin fairly quickly so I'm researching now to get as many teaching tricks in my bag to cope with the second half of that long 60 minute lesson. Of course I appreciate improving my own drumming as well! Cheers!
Oh for sure, a 7 year old is gonna wear out focus wise quick. Something I do quite often with younger players...I put the work part up front and then I save the “fun” stuff for the back half...jamming together or learning a song that they have wanted to learn. Thanks for being such a caring teacher. We need more like you!
@@StephenTaylorDrums Thanks very much Stephen for the personalized feedback. Much appreciated. BTW I've been enjoying experimenting with the pat boon, debby boon and splat boon fills I learned from you. I taught my little guy the pat boon and he cooperated on that. We also made some headway jamming to "We Will Rock You".. I recommended to his mother to decrease the lesson from 60minutes to 30 or 45 minutes if they continue in the fall.. ;)
Ringo was a master at fast "I think I cans". He did them all over the place in Beatles' tunes. My theory is that, as a lefty playing a right set-up kit, both his wrists were probably equally strong. Therefore he could pull those fills off without one hand lagging behind.
LOLOL! I love Pat Boone Debbie Boone- I’ve never heard of it but it’s awesome and it really works as that name. It actually helps with learning it instead of with counting with numbers. Wow. I wish I could learn from you as a teacher in real life man. You rock!!!!
I can’t believe that little lesson just helped me out so much, thank you!!! 😅especially the Pat Boone Debbie Boone, feel like I can utilise this in so much!
Hi Steve I have just come across you on UA-cam. I have been playing for band's on & off for years but have had a 10 year gap & only helped out a band ones a year. I have a full gigging kit (packed away in the spare room) & an Electric kit Roland TD kit. I find it hard to practice with my job but after seeing how you put across practicing I am going to try & get on the kit for one hour every evening. Thanks for the inspection.
Great lesson! I've been playing off and on since high school, but I suck now. Can still play, but, don't make enough time to play. I can play what you demonstrated here on a set today.
Thanks Steph! The way you teach, make me (or everyone who watch your videos) happy and always excite to learn more. I am 33 years old now. Love drums since i was 10 years old. But, i got my first kit at 33 years old. A bit late, but better than nothing, right?
I was expecting some crazy rudiment combination around the set and then I’m pleasantly surprised to learn my signature “flam-kick” combo works just great :)
Stephen you are an awesome teacher, very nice and very knowledgeable. I have been using all these fills for a while now but just the way that you simplify this is great to see. Not a lot of teachers do this and you taught it and explained it perfectly. Even though I know these I am very glad you put content like this because it improves my drumming skills everytime. Thanks a lot man. You rock!
Great lesson. Finally some new material I can use right away and add to my playing . This stuff helps more than you know. My favorite is the Pat Boone Debbi Boone. It’s a great intro as well as a go to fill . Thx as always for these lessons they help us so much!!
Yes I want to leave a comment man ... simply put, you are one of the best (definitely top 3) teachers there are out there in this vast sea of videos ... you are the real deal, thank you
Just watched this video and you seem like an amazing teacher. I have been playing guitar and piano for around 17 years now and finally have picked up a drum set. And these fills have become a great implementation to my multitrack recording.
I'm loving your channel and these fills. Got a drum kit two days ago after wanting one ever since playing drums in school band twenty years ago. Practising these five fills to 4 Non Blonde's What's Up - has a nice slow beat and lots of steady climbs for varying the fills. Thanks for this video!
These were great! It was time well spent. They were easy enough for me to learn without being frustrating and it made me sound ADVANCED beginner rather than beginner. Thanks Stephen
Oh man do I need this. 2 1/2years into play drums and the 16th note roll across my drums has gotten so ugh boring. Thank you for this. I love playing the drums and it has help an incredible amount on my piano playing (been piano playing for 15 years and finally followed instruction from my teacher "learn to play the drums". your great and this is fun fun fun
nice work...nice and simple and great job explaining the drum fills. I'm a novice drummer and its so nice to find a video that breaks it down and gives you something to build on...
Thank you so much for taking the time making this videos. I’m trying to teach a kid from church how to play drums and I’m using your videos for that. God bless you!!
Your the man. Keeping making these videos. Great presentation and knowledge. You grasp my attention with your teaching style. Keep following your purpose!!
"You only wanna bring Debbie to the party when you gotta bring her to the party..." wurd Lovin' the sound of your new cymbals ST! I'm all about the splat-boom (flam) and the I gotta pee. So universally applicable and timeless!
The building blocks of extended language for drummers. once you understand a note and a verb, then you can speak the language. I love these fills, and I can burn my brain out trying to remember all of the times I've heard them. Almost certain every drummer had used these or a sight variation. Thank you for the lesson, Ace's!!!
I like the mnemonics--haven't used stuff like that for 20+ years. Good stuff man. Always enjoy seeing what other guys are playing. I'll have Pat and Debbie in my head now.
I learned Pat Boone Debbie Boone as "Flats in Dagenham". A really great lesson: it's not about showing off chops, its about drummers being in service to the music. Really well explained too.
Fills I recognised- ZZ Top - Gimme all your loving, Fun loving Criminals - Scoobie snacks. Cheers Stephen looking forward to adding these to my vocabulary.
I like the fills you share and I'm going to use them and I'll always remind myself that drums are for music. If I learned anything today it's be humble and remain teachable. Thank you.
I stoped drumming becouse right now i have no time. But you are showing people how passionate and strong can an idvividual live and make his way to greatness. Its not just money its spiritual.

Ringo was a master at fast "I think I cans". He did them all over the place in Beatles' tunes. My theory is that, as a lefty playing a right set-up kit, both his wrists were probably equally strong. Therefore he could pull those fills off without one hand lagging behind.
Or it's just the easiest fill ever
I love Stephen... great lessons and approach. I often say the best drum fill is in Mississippi Queen -- splat-boom-splat!
1:47 "drums are really cool, music is better" I'll remember that
I have recently started playing the drums...thanks for your videos..they are perfect to understand as a newcomer..many thanks😎🥁
Stephen- I love the sound of your bass drum and your snare drum.
Can you please share how the drums are tuned, muffled, etc?
Thanks,
Rick
Hi Steve
I have just come across you on UA-cam.
Yan Mills 👊🏻🙏🏼
Great lesson! I've been playing off and on since high school, but I suck now. Can still play, but, don't make enough time to play. I can play what you demonstrated here on a set today.
Simple, I have been tying to lean drums and this video helped alot! Thank you so much for this video!!!
Great vid Steve... simple but they are so effective...and can be done in a wide range of speeds and genres..
Matty Tee thanks Matty!
your videos have been extremely helpful (to this broke drummer that cant afford lessons) THANK YOU
Heard a song today where they used a part "I think I can", part "Debbie" fill. Sort of a "I think I'm Debbie" kind of thing. 👍🏻😃👍🏻
Gary C. You bet Gary!
You are an incredible instructor, you make it so easy for beginners. Thank you so much.
Yes I want to leave a comment man ... simply put, you are one of the best (definitely top 3) teachers there are out there in this vast sea of videos ... you are the real deal, thank you
Shane Mezer thanks so much Shane. I really appreciate the kind words
I've been drumming for 11 years. Why did I watch this whole video 😂
@Tom Cruise it's very well possible haha
Same
Go lions
Conor Reed I’m an experienced drummer and I watched this vid 😂😂
Me too😂
Just watched this video and you seem like an amazing teacher. I have been playing guitar and piano for around 17 years now and finally have picked up a drum set. And these fills have become a great implementation to my multitrack recording.
Thanks Charles...glad they help!
Thank you, really needed this today! I have been running out of different drum fills to play with different grooves.
Cameron Darnell you bet Cameron
I'm loving your channel and these fills. Got a drum kit two days ago after wanting one ever since playing drums in school band twenty years ago. Practising these five fills to 4 Non Blonde's What's Up - has a nice slow beat and lots of steady climbs for varying the fills. Thanks for this video!
Reb Schoates you bet!
These were great! It was time well spent. They were easy enough for me to learn without being frustrating and it made me sound ADVANCED beginner rather than beginner. Thanks Stephen
Joanne Baum you bet Joanne!
I’ve had a kit for 2 days and these beginner videos are perfect. Thank you!!
So glad they’re helping! I also have a lot of free resources on my website.
I've been using these fills for years now! Good advice Stephen!
Debbie can be heard in ZZ Top’s gimme all your lovin…I’m a 30 year guitarist, just bought my first kit. Digging all your lessons 🤘
YES, because of you sir i am now convinced that mnemonic is really helpful. Thank you for the video
Oh man do I need this. 2 1/2years into play drums and the 16th note roll across my drums has gotten so ugh boring. Thank you for this. I love playing the drums and it has help an incredible amount on my piano playing (been piano playing for 15 years and finally followed instruction
from my teacher "learn to play the drums". your great and this is fun fun fun
You bet Kristine! Love that car too!
Some of these I didn’t know about, but somehow I did the fills I hadn’t heard the names of. My mind is blown.
Love the pat boon debbie boon. So easy to follow along. Thank you for the lesson.
nice work...nice and simple and great job explaining the drum fills. I'm a novice drummer and its so nice to find a video that breaks it down and gives you something to build on...
Jonas Merk So glad it helped Jonas
Thanks! As a lefty, never got through the rudiments lessons. These fills, however, are in my toolbox!
You bet Peter
I'm also a lefty and sometimes struggle with rudiments ... Stephen Taylor
These are so great! Much more interesting and fun than a lot of the other drum fill videos I've seen on UA-cam
Thank you so much for taking the time making this videos. I’m trying to teach a kid from church how to play drums and I’m using your videos for that. God bless you!!
So glad they’re helping!

Great job as always, Stephen! Thanks for sharing!
Daily Drum Lesson Thanks!
Your the man. Keeping making these videos. Great presentation and knowledge. You grasp my attention with your teaching style. Keep following your purpose!!
Thanks Timothy!
"You only wanna bring Debbie to the party when you gotta bring her to the party..." wurd
Lovin' the sound of your new cymbals ST! I'm all about the splat-boom (flam) and the I gotta pee. So universally applicable and timeless!
Wide awake at 7am so can't play yet, but now I can't wait after all your vids! Thanks!
I love it
The building blocks of extended language for drummers. once you understand a note and a verb, then you can speak the language. I love these fills, and I can burn my brain out trying to remember all of the times I've heard them. Almost certain every drummer had used these or a sight variation. Thank you for the lesson, Ace's!!!
You bet Brian!
Love all of these fills! Feeling more confident now. Thank you!
The little Debbie fill can be found in ZZ Top “Gimmie All Your Lovin’”
Ah yeah, I just commented it sounds like a ZZ Top tune, that's the one!
Yup it is thought it was sharp dressed man at first
I am a truly beginner drummer and thank you giving these lesson
You explain it seems to be very easy, great job!
Thanks for the video. Can't beat a good free lesson. I think you're a great teacher, I don't wanna fall asleep watching!
Thanks man!!! This is so great to start.
Lol Debbie was already becoming a bad much-loved habit! Thanks for saving me! Love this! Pat & Debbie! Awesomeness!! 😊
Amazing how you can always come up with a complete different angle in your teaching. Classic ..... I think I can!
wikus lombard Thanks Wikus...always great to hear from you!
I like the fills you share and I'm going to use them and I'll always remind myself that drums are for music. If I learned anything today it's be humble and remain teachable. Thank you.
christopher rojas So glad it helped Christopher!
great fills and easy to pick up and explained
Awesome lesson! Very helpful for a beginner like myself who is trying to build a solid foundation!
Myles Murphy glad it helped Myles!
