Pasty alien skin color that definitely wouldn’t fit any human. She was using satire/sarcasm but you got the gist that this would happen with any shade mixed with the darkest shade .
Yeah I saw that too! 😂 and there was still people in comments like - “mIX iT wITH a DaRKer ShADe then it’ll work.” 🥴 Like I NOT get those comments!! First, MANY have proven it does not work! Second, why are they defending a brand that did this? But regardless, even IF it COULD be mixed and work (which it definitely can’t as we both have seen!) Youthforia said it’s a FOUNDATION. They NEVER said it was a mixer. It’s just people defending them saying it’s meant to be a mixer. Like no! It was meant to be a foundation. Trying to defend them with iTs A mIXeR is wrong anyways. This is what hit me too. As an artist, there is a nuanced color depth to human skin. But not difficult to figure out. Takes layers in painting having under tones and shades of those same colors to get shadows and depth. You don't use black unless absolutely blended and in smaller amounts. ..not ONLY black. This missed the nail so far they were outside

I do not feel sorry for the backlash Youthphoria is receiving. When this foundation was in production, they cannot tell me that they actually thought that there was a shade for EVERYONE. Sometimes I will have to mix two shades for the perfect shade, and that is understandable. But to go from the darkest shade originally being a medium reddish toned brown to the next darkest being a blue/gray based BLACK, is just criminal.
I wouldn't be this mad at Youthphoria if they said "okay we don't have money so let's release 6 shades, fair, light, medium, medium dark, dark and deep" and they just could have made it all neutral undertones.That's a wise thing to do if you really don't have the capital to make more, so everyone at least feels included and has a chance to find their shade. If darker shades don't sell well they could have just made a smaller quantity of them. I'm sick and tired of excuses and their attempt to fix this situation is even more infuriating.
@lolamurder1882 Especially since nobody is asking them to make a foundation for literally everyone, people just want people of color to be equally represented in the shade range. Companies acting like this is something outrageous or insanely expensive or giving excuses that something was a test batch need to be fully canceled in my opinion, not just face controversy.

I don't feel bad for the Youthphoria CEO at all. The reason why this happened to begin with is because her ego made her be more focused on creating something that has "never been done before" than on creating something that's actually useful to black people. She took the whole controversy and once again made it about herself, she wanted to outdo black owned brands like Fenty and receive praise. If she had actually cared about the black people who she had scorned to begin with, she would've pulled dark skinned black people into that formulation lab to sample their skin colors. She would've paid attention to the darkest shades released by black owned brands and questioned why they weren't tar black. But nope, this was entirely about her and her own need to receive praise.
Controversial thought. If you can’t formulate the right shade, why not send your clients to the best dark shades of other brands. Like “hey, we haven’t mastered this yet but this is who we hope to be. In the interim, our other stuff will hit the mark for you.”

Someone posted a video on ig, it popped up when I was scrolling but she took another brown/ darker shade of the foundation and mixed it with 600 and proved that it would just make any shade you mix it with grey! Sure it would be different shades of grey with different shades of the foundation but definitely wouldn’t be fit for anyone’s skin color.

All Youthforia had to say was that it wasn't intentional, they f@cked up, and that they will do better; and, then, actually do better by pulling the foundation and reformulating a broader range. The fact that they didn't say any of those things but presented a weirdly convoluted and unbelievable explanation for shade 600 speaks volumes, though.
It's the fact they said we do sades for all and they didn't have shades for me and I'm not that dark but awkward undertones then when people said it's not for all and why is it 10 shades between the 2 darkest instead of addressing that they brought out black pigment and called it foundation. If they don't want dark skinned people in their make up just freaking be honest. But there is a lot of colourism in Asian countries so maybe that's where it came from. But a south Korean beauty brand just did an 11 shade increase and are bring out more and it's specifically for an international audience and i think that says it all really

Even if it was unintended exclusion at the start (i.e., if we're to believe the small brand with a small initial launch rhetoric), it sure seemed intentional once they released pure black pigmented paint and then doubled-down on it. And the founder doesn't get a pass with the "Asian market" bit, _should_ she ever try to use it, as she lives in Miami and graduated from Dartmouth. Youthforia's market is young and North American and she d@mn well knows that market includes plenty people of all colours ... and undertones.

Those body wash sheets probably would have worked if it was marketed as a camping product. Takes up almost no space and weighs almost nothing and if it's enviromentally safe and non-toxic that would be so golden to take with you on multiday trips.
Those Plus body wash sheets might have been better received if it was marketed to a different aspect of their audience. Those single use types of products are really useful in the camping world- hand wash, body soap, shampoo sheets, etc. Maybe marketed to festivals such as Coachella as an easy showering solution would have been helpful?

That's exactly what I thought, or to mom's, it would be perfect for storing in a purse, to use with young children. Think mini size for sticky hands in public places. Especially when more places are going to no hand towels. Sometimes wipes are just not enough.

They tend to come in a handy plastic travel case and be sized so that one piece is appropriate for one hand washing. And the last set I bought was hello kitty themed and like $5.

No one is black because even the darkest skin tones have such a radiance under the sunlight that has such a unique depth, black pigment could never replicate it. It’s ridiculous. My executive told me a black woman that I had to call him sir/mister. Well that didn’t go over well with me. I gave him a good cursing out. It’s 2024 and then I proceeded to go over his boss’ head and talk to her. She sent out something to say that’s inappropriate. Yes we definitely need more women and diversity in the workplace.

I got lasik done almost 2 years ago - best thing I ever spent money on . you are orettty much high as a kite when they are actually doing the procedure - and you are done in under 15 minutes . You then get a really good nap ( like 4-5 hours ). You wake up and you can see !
@deborahwhitney9427 yes, as GravityFallsUp said, the reason these diversity measures are even in place is because for sp long, people who were best qualified to do a job were overlooked because they're different, whether it's because they're a woman, or a person of color, or of a non-Christian religion, or not straight, etc. When you are forced to look at others outside of your bubble and interact with them, we all grow and improve, and also allows the best person to be chosen for the job, because otherwise bias (sometimes known and intentional, sometimes completely unintentional and unconscious) will interfere and lead you to choose someone you like and relate to rather than the best fit for the job.
Even after watching the original video on this topic and all of the apology videos and tiktoks from the company, I'm having a hard time telling if the owner is genuinely this clueless and arrogant to think this would work or if it was malicious in that she set out to be this disrespectful out of spite. The tiktok about her looking for a person to be the model made me think that she genuinely believed that she had done something and was just trying to find the perfect person to make it fit to prove that she was right. But I also have a hard time imagining that an owner of a makeup line who has other foundations wouldn't understand that one pigment creates one color and that that obviously does not work on human skin. This just seems like such an obvious fact that if she didn't know/didn't check is really concerning and if she didn't care is slightly disturbing.
I feel like the owners have no business doing cosmetics because when doing products, especially complexion products, they should be trying to get shades that match HUMAN skin. Not random plastic/skin sample things. They need to match them to human skin as they’re creating the shades so something like this doesn’t happen. They shouldn’t make the shade then go trying to find a match in the mall. They should already have a match from when they were creating it, which they obviously didn’t. So they either didn’t do that and just rushed it and didn’t work to match actual human skin tones or they knew it wouldn’t and didn’t care and were willing to risk it (but don’t know why they would. They’d have to know after releasing their crappy shade range initially, they’d be heavily scrutinized when they released deeper shades!)
Honestly, it's telling that she intentionally tested this product on people who have ZERO understanding of makeup & could not give her constructive feedback. She wasn't looking for feedback or an honest appraisal of her product - she was looking to stroke her ego & deflect the backlash.
I honestly believe that the owner possibly thought that this was her ''smart way'' around developing darker foundation shades, by Expecting customers to buy the dark shade #590 AND #600 to mix their own shade to appropriately match their darker skin tone ( Which would still be Highly unacceptable, But would give her increased sales!). If so, it was HIGHLY LAZY, INSULTING and UN INCLUSIVE. the newer TiKTOK makes it seem like she new the calculated risk that she was making; and went through with it anyways. I put drops in my eyes every evening from the ophthalmologist to PREVENT glaucoma and have to go back every 3 months to have the pressure checked and the last visit I was told cataract was starting 😢 SO I WOULD NOT BE PLAYING WITH MY EYES FOR VANITY!!!
The body wash sheets actually sound useful for festivals or camping situations where you want to pack lightly. But that's the only situation where they make sense.
Hi Jen. So on this color changing thing. I am writing from Costa Rica, a close relative to my husband did it in Spain in a regulated clinic, he had always wanted to have blue eyes. He is a very minor celebrity here and documented the whole thing in his social media. Bottom line, he looks like a vampire. He has fair skin but still looks super weird, the color was supposed to set in and look “normal” but it’s been about 6 months and it still looks the same weird as in the beginning
I'll stand firm that a company could make whatever shades it wants to, that's their business. I mean if I make earrings which I do as a craft, I don't make earrings for people with typical 14 gauge sized ear piercings, I only make them for gauged piercings because I have gauge piercings of 12, 8, and 6 and I'm looking after my audience if that makes sense.
You don't need to support but every company has the right to make whatever they want. Why do people want to force companies for inclusion? Even some companies that do have 50 shades aren't doing too well.

@coffeebeforemascara That’s still a wrong take and incomparable. Those are not equivalent, ear holes are a part of who you are but your skin color is a part of you. It’s a human feature. Born with you. Saying that if you make certain earring products for your audience and comparing it to this is so wrong. That means that youthphoria audience is lighter skinned people, purposely leaving darker skin people out. That is so wrong on a moral and ethical level. It’s not comparable to what you’re trying to suggest. The implications AND impact here are way stronger than just someone having different sized piercings.
I saw shade 600 in my local Ulta and it was even worse than expected. Not to mention they didn’t carry the whole range so there was a jump from 560 to 600.

Colorism in the Asian skincare sphere seems to be a big player in Fiona’s strategy and wow, shows up really stark in the western and African market places. All she needed was to bring an Australian Aboriginal friend on to prove her point and a class could be taught on “colorism around the world”.
I have painted most of my life and colour mixing is part of that. With the pigments we have available it shouldn't be this hard. This makes me so mad, frustrated, disappointed for all my melanated friends out there. Heck, I am an olive and as a pasty person which is hard to find too (especially where I live) but at least I can make something work and I am not an afterthought or, worse, not even considered. I would never mess with my eyes for vanity. Not. Ever.
The saddest part about this situation is that they KNEW they messed up because they faked the ad and yet they still rolled it out because they thought black people wouldn’t have a loud enough voice to advocate for themselves. And that’s on periodt.
Even if they can’t get the “right” skin models - how about a fine artist who mixes and paints skin tones to advise the company. It’s gotta be deliberate.
Lasik is FDA approved and that has significant complications for a shocking percentage of people who have it. I definitely wouldn't try the eye color changing procedure with the 12 percent complication rate cited in the clip. That's more than a one in nine chance of problems! I would like to change my eye color if there were a safe process to do so, but this ain't it.
I know someone that has to live permanently in dark rooms because of Lasik surgery. He cannot even go out at night without special sunglasses. It destroyed his life. People are crazy to risk it for an eye colour.
I have to agree. Sight is so valuable, and I'm not comfortable risking it for color. I wear contacts specifically because I'm too scared to do lasik. I can do pretty colors with them if I want to without having surgery.
FDA will be approving the wildest stuff, as a foreigner an approval from them is the same as nothing. you know those teeth whitening strips you can buy do to at home? in my home country theyre absolutely forbidden, teeth whitening can only be done by an actual dentists that wont leave the chemical on your teeth for too long so that it damages you enamel the least as possible. and the FDA allows for that chemical to be sold like chewing gum. and that's a mild example! cant even imagine what they would greenlit if it sounded profitable enough.
I agree. This was a fatal blow for a fledgling brand. I’d never even heard of them until the initial release of the foundations and the subsequent backlash for lack of shade range. All I’ve ever heard from this brand is bad news, and I imagine I’m not the only one.
Not surprised about Boscia. They have a lot of stuff at Ross and even there it doesn’t get bought up, it always goes on clearance. I’ve been able to buy multiple of their jelly ball cleansers for 25¢ or 99¢ instead of the $22 retail price
I think what made this upsetting is for the first launch to have a picture with a dark brown shade and then when purchased to get a much lighter shade seems dishonest. And then upon supposed correction it just seemed like they tried to hurry up and just put out anything. They should have taken the time to research and mindfully consider how to make the proper shades.
The simple truth is that if you cannot handle the responsibility that comes with owning and running a brand, you do not deserve that place in the market. Fiona refused to take ownership of her mistakes, intentionally covered them up and moved forward most likely KNOWING shade 600 didn't work for dark skin and now she's facing the consequences. I don't wish harm on her, but she does not deserve to take up space in a saturated market that could go to a small black owned beauty company after what she did.
speaking as a artist, very little things are just naturally pure jet black. This especially goes for skin tones. Light or dark, skin is a blend of different colors. You’ll hardly ever see an artist use black straight from the tube. I thought it was rage bait because I can’t fathom they didn’t have anyone aware of this during production. But considering how they’re hiding maybe they’re just that ignorant?

What Youthphoria did was a slap in the face to every person of color. They said, “Here, now you can’t say we didn’t make the darkest foundation.” While it’s literally just black. It would be like giving light skinned people liquid-paper white foundation and saying, “Here, happy now?” The audacity!
As an eco-conscious Gen Z (24yr), I did know about Plus, but the reviews were shit and bar soap makes more sense for daily use. So, I never purchased it.

Agreed! Bar soap has less packaging per use and can be more cost effective. Others have mentioned marketing this for hiking/festivals- I think that would’ve been great! But I’m also not sure it could’ve survived on that alone.

In your previous vid Jen you mentioned that you thought Fiona may have just given the lab an image of a very dark-skinned individual and told the lab to match that. It's very much on the lab for malicious compliance but also on YouthForia/Fiona for not QC'ing the foundation before trying to find someone to match it to - or even finding real people to match to in the first place while producing the product. It's hard to tell if this was just an arrogant but misguided attempt to one-up Fenty or if it was a nasty way of telling darker skinned people to "shut up & take what you’re offered". Either way, neither scenario is at any way okay.
I thought exactly what these people are thinking when I saw the shade on the face, and I kept thinking.... Does she know? Does anyone on the company know? I know she's Asian which has very different racial politics and nuances than black people, but she can't be that oblivious to basic history right?
Outrage is an excellent marketing tool. Only thing that doesn't make sense is why they sent the produc to dark skinned influencers, but the whole thing brought massive brand recognition and fair skinned people know they have options, also no one has said anything bad about the product, to the contrary, it looks kind of good, even if it is the wrong shade, so their business will definitely profit off of people complaining about the shade range.
I'm always looking for eco-friendly bodywashes, but bar soap is just too drying and kinda gross. Especially in the shower cause water is everywhere so it doesn't dry properly and just stays soggy :(. It's also very slippery 😅. So, yeah. I also thought that I could be that kind of girl and just use bar soap, but I didn't like to use it when I was a kid and I don't like it nowadays. Quite a while ago I've tried face wash in sheets (I thought it was a stupid gimmick so I bought it to try it out and be disappointed, but it actually was very useful for travel!). Those sheets are made out of dried foam. Very gentle and non-drying 👌. Storing them is still a hassle though 😅
There are some great face wash bars - my current one is creamy and a little bit moisturising, I'd tell you what but unfortunately I've lost the label! Wish me luck when I go search for a new one :)

If meta were to have an intentional, dramatic propaganda campaign that does not have Americans best interests in mind, then the US government knows what actions to take, and the people at meta also know this, which at least a disincentive for Meta to do so. This is not the case for TikTok. It's much harder to regulate companies that have ownership and decision making overseas. And yes, it is anti Chinese in the sense that Chinese companies get much more scrutiny than, say, Canadian companies, or UK companies. China is not a close ally of America so America is more cautious of things affiliated with china.

I had the opportunity to make a documentary on "Women in STEM" for one of my courses. i had read and watched copious amounts of facts regarding why women participation is low and how changing that could be helpful. It just makes me happy a brand made for women is finally trying to not just get our money but is also trying to empower us. This is also why I love Dove too. I had tears in my eyes. So deep black people should just stick to fenty is your point? I should not try any other brand, and stay in my lane right? And these people are beauty influences, it is their job to literally review makeup- but in your world they should just stick to the three or four POC brands. Why focus on every little New brand that gets out? If it does not catter to you, then you dont give your money to them period. I used to hate my eye color, it was blue when i was young and slowly got darker. In my 20s they were more green forward hazel. Now at 44 they are more marble/cat eye hazel so they are greenish brown with spots in them, like a marble sort of. I actually really love them now and get compliments alot on my eye color. I probably would have changed them back in the days if i could have but im glad i didnt!
I have zero sympathy for Youthforia and the owner. That "darkest shade" was performative at best and malicious at worst. Also them bragging about the shade being darker than Fenty gave me the ick. Glad I never bought from them.
when i was studying abroad in italy, there was a kiko store super close to my apartment, and i tried out their contour and blush sticks and i'm obsessed with them !!! i'm almost out of the contour and i will be rebuying it for sure
Those body wash strips would've been so cool if I heard of them, and it came in a cool wooden or recyclable container with about 50 of them. Would be perfect for traveling. I wouldn't pay more that $25 though.
I saw a comment the other day saying "I'm almost fully blind and it's ridiculous how people play roulettet with their eyes every day" this was a video of someone dyeing their eyelashes with men's beard dye. It made me really think and lately I've been really careful/gentle with my eyes. Appretiating and loving them everyday because some people don't even know how they're favorite people look. Right?! My boyfriend is legally blind without his glasses. His lenses are at least 1-2cm thicker than his frames. He will get lasik eventually, and I'm super scared. He's a bit worried. But for vanity?! God that's just so. Not. Worth. It.
The correct steps in developing cosmetics should be creating a sample, testing it on models, changing the formula if necessary, testing it again, finalizing it and finally manufacturing. Youthphoria got it all wrong. The finalized the shade without even testing it, then when they tested and realized it didn't match anyone, it was too late. Morphe made the same mistake a few years ago when they created a foundation line with green and orange shades. These people aren't just problematic, in terms of doing business they're incompetent as well and deserve fiancial loss.

I keep saying it: these makeup companies will make a thousand shades of white, tack four brown shades on the end and call it a day. This is absolutely unacceptable. I think it’s high time a makeup brand set up a counter in Ulta/Sephora where people’s foundations are mixed on the spot. Not only will that fix issues like this, it’s also sustainable. It is time to stop enabling the overt racism in every level of this country. We need more inclusive innovation. Period.
Where I live there is a company Mix Beauty Lab that does this for all kinds of makeup not just foundation. You go in for an in person consultation and they formulate custom shades. You can also get a custom foundation from Dcypher.
Absolutely. The sheer number of ignorant and misinformed comments (and possibly some troll comments) in this section, going on about how people need to just deal with it and how not everything needs to be inclusive, is sadly not baffling, but also it is so exhausting to think about what a huge uphill battle this is sometimes. And as nice as a foundation mix bar would be, it definitely wont keep creators and businesses from treating BIPOC and queer people as second and third class citizens. i dont see how mixing product on the spot would be anywhere NEAR acesscible, hygienic, or hell consistent! what if it works like hairdressers? what if one time the poor minimum wage beautician gets your shade right, and then you go in again with other person and they give you a vile of orange? foundation isnt ice cream, cosmestics are not supposed to be taken out of their vile, let alone repoted from a big tub at a random corner of a mall... we didnt even talk about what if air enter the big tub of foudation? it oxides and then what? thats thousands of dollars! however, i do feel like shades SHOULD have an standardized sorting system internationally. that way, once you know your shade, you know all brands that sell something that has that undertone, that depth. "05CB" doesnt mean anything when you buy from another brand and thats "3" and then on another one it's "toasted caramel". standardizing it would also show brands that have a nowhere near even shade distribution, even if it looks like the darkest shades would fit you.
I saw some body wash sheets in Target last year. I don't know if they were Plus or another brand. I remember thinking about how unnecessarily complicated, pricey, and even over-packaged they were considering that bar soap exists. All the problems the sheets claimed to solve are already solved - and solved much better - by bars of soap.
I don’t think we need brands like Youthforia. First, such a dumb name. Second, if anyone calls this “learning and growing”, so help me gawd… it is 2024. You STILL need to learn?!?! Unacceptable. In every way. From my heart, I hope that brand ceases to exist. This is not a mistake… 10+ years ago I might’ve considered it (doubt it). Mind you- this black face paint was created in response to a lack of inclusivity… I can’t take this any way but malicious.
I credit Fenty for the explosion of inclusive shade ranges. I am very light skinned, fair, or pale, however you chose to describe, and now find not only better shades but more warms, cools, and neutrals in many brands.
Had to jump in re: changing eye color. 1) I encourage people to read Toni Morrison's book The Bluest Eye. 2) Eye color is perfectly matched in Nature, and messing with eye color due to beauty standards or vanity is a recipe for disaster!

One of the questions we seem to be asking ourselves a lot lately as a consumer nation is how far good will and right intention goes when measured against extreme ignorance. Somehow, I don't think we'll find in her favor on this one, but I do hope she puts hers and her child's health first during this big mess.
No one asked her to cut production time 1/18 of its full time. Thats how you get products that harm people more than just their feelings. Ive seen products spoil bf hitting the shelves or have stiff in them because they were made too fast. Again no one asked her to do this.
I was born blind. I can't imagine anyone risking their site for something as cosmetic as changing eye color. I don't think people considering the surgery take enough time to think about what it would be like if they open their eyes and everything was black, permanently. I think this is a really unfortunate procedure, and I hope our FDA shuts it down somehow.

A friend of mine had the laser eye changing color and it is not permanent. They destroy the melanin and you are back to the color you had when you were a baby. But just as newborns colour change with time, your color comes back. My friend had the treatment done during 3 months for it to come back in one year.
The fact that the people with the deepest shades on Earth are pointing out the obvious "if you can't find a model to match even among our shade ranges, then ITS FACE PAIN NOT A FOUNDATION for a real skin tone!" speaks so much to how little market research goes into youthforia's products. I'm sorry, but that this was released WITHOUT sorting that out first, is pretty sad. I mean, it not like we can all pretend she "had no idea about undertones~!" when all the other shades have more than one pigment to make them capable of matching undertones... and this one is just straight up black fact paint that's been made a wee bit sheer so as to MAYBE show some of the natural skin pigment through it (to give the allusion to there being more colour in the undertones when its just black). So the creator of youthforia wants us all to think she's too stupid to realize a foundation aught to have an undertone to it and more than one pigment, then? I'm not sure I believe the "she really thought this was what people were asking for" or "she really does think that's a legit skintone to produce and doesn't understand the backlash" lines...
The bottom line is that she should probably not have released the foundation line AT ALL if she didn't have solid light/white, mid/tan and deep set. At minimum, she should have had the lightest and darkest both ALREADY done and dusted, BEFORE launch.... And she should have tried to do the deepest shades first, just because they'd be the most tricky for her to develop (clearly they are).
I can only imagine walking out the store with my brand new box of Plus and it's raining hard outside. Bag or not I've never pulled my stuff out the bag and it be completely dry. I would cry. I mention it because I'm clumsy and absent-minded at times. 😭🤣❤
The eye color surgery makes me sad just because your eyes are just as unique as your finger print, as your unique skin tone... they make you, you.... I've had plastic surgery, im not against anything. But this just makes me so sad.

Eye color is so meaningful and so personal. I was born blind, and I was born with eyes that I was told were a blue green. As a teenager, I had to have my eyes removed surgically. When the ocularist made eyes for me to wear, he made them blue, not my natural blue green. I inherited my eye color from my grandma, and it has always upset me that someone else made a choice to give me blue eyes instead of what I had before.
Those soap sheets would have been great when I had broken my leg, was non-weight bearing, and couldn't shower regularly. I could see them also being useful in like... Hospitals and care homes, beyond the camping/outdoor activities areas. But not at that price. 😬

I wouldn't ever change my brown eyes. I like my brown color as my default and don't like the idea of lasers or needles near my eyes. But even if u didn't prefer ur own eye color, with all the colored contacts out there, how could one limit themselves self to only one color and style??? There r so many styles: natural, unnatural, and many in btwns. And most are really comfortable too (similar to my Rx contacts) AND they often come in Rx up to -8.00. 😍

My eye colour was changed when I was near death. Apparently your body can burn pigment for energy faster than it can burn fat. I was 15 with a white streak & suddenly mid brown eyes (which used to be such a dark brown they were almost black). DON’T DO IT! I suffer from terrible migraines because my eyes get too much light. I was supposed to reflect most of it from my dark irises but now it all gets in & it hurts
I loved this. Thank you ❤ I remember using a blue peel off mask, a clear pink peel off mask and an opaque peach mask way back when. I did try the Boscia mask. It was very aggressive and it often needed a big cleanup afterwards.

KIKO MILANO is huge. Americans might not feel that because KIKO is not that popular in the States BUT as a portuguese woman I have to admit that KIKO is HUGE IN EUROPE. They have great products for good prices and their products are quite important in countries where ulta and other makeup stores don't exist. In portugal, the only big makeup stores we have are sephora and primor and they are pretty recent. KIKO was there since the begining. Not all countries have the amount of makeup store options that the USA has.
The Plus soap leaves was a bad idea from the start; you can find those in most camping stores for much cheaper AND they aren't unnecessarily individually packed, you just get a little pod of them like a cigarette packet. And the last place i found them in had them in shampoo and laundry soap versions too! Definitely not an at-home thing though, best for camping or travelling abroad.
A girl on instagram posted a reel going to ulta and she took the darkest youthforia shade and mixed it with another brown / dark shade and guess what??
It turned grey! Pasty alien skin color that definitely wouldn’t fit any human. She was using satire/sarcasm but you got the gist that this would happen with any shade mixed with the darkest shade .

This is what hit me too. As an artist, there is a nuanced color depth to human skin. But not difficult to figure out. Takes layers in painting having under tones and shades of those same colors to get shadows and depth. You don't use black unless absolutely blended and in smaller amounts. ..not ONLY black. This missed the nail so far they were outside

I do not feel sorry for the backlash Youthphoria is receiving. When this foundation was in production, they cannot tell me that they actually thought that there was a shade for EVERYONE. Sometimes I will have to mix two shades for the perfect shade, and that is understandable. But to go from the darkest shade originally being a medium reddish toned brown to the next darkest being a blue/gray based BLACK, is just criminal.

I wouldn't be this mad at Youthphoria if they said "okay we don't have money so let's release 6 shades, fair, light, medium, medium dark, dark and deep" and they just could have made it all neutral undertones.That's a wise thing to do if you really don't have the capital to make more, so everyone at least feels included and has a chance to find their shade. If darker shades don't sell well they could have just made a smaller quantity of them. I'm sick and tired of excuses and their attempt to fix this situation is even more infuriating.

Companies acting like this is something outrageous or insanely expensive or giving excuses that something was a test batch need to be fully canceled in my opinion, not just face controversy.

I don't feel bad for the Youthphoria CEO at all. The reason why this happened to begin with is because her ego made her be more focused on creating something that has "never been done before" than on creating something that's actually useful to black people. She took the whole controversy and once again made it about herself, she wanted to outdo black owned brands like Fenty and receive praise. If she had actually cared about the black people who she had scorned to begin with, she would've pulled dark skinned black people into that formulation lab to sample their skin colors. She would've paid attention to the darkest shades released by black owned brands and questioned why they weren't tar black. But nope, this was entirely about her and her own need to receive praise.

Controversial thought. If you can’t formulate the right shade, why not send your clients to the best dark shades of other brands. Like “hey, we haven’t mastered this yet but this is who we hope to be. In the interim, our other stuff will hit the mark for you.”

Someone posted a video on ig, it popped up when I was scrolling but she took another brown/ darker shade of the foundation and mixed it with 600 and proved that it would just make any shade you mix it with grey! Sure it would be different shades of grey with different shades of the foundation but definitely wouldn’t be fit for anyone’s skin color.

All Youthforia had to say was that it wasn't intentional, they f@cked up, and that they will do better; and, then, actually do better by pulling the foundation and reformulating a broader range. The fact that they didn't say any of those things but presented a weirdly convoluted and unbelievable explanation for shade 600 speaks volumes, though.
It's the fact they said we do sades for all and they didn't have shades for me and I'm not that dark but awkward undertones then when people said it's not for all and why is it 10 shades between the 2 darkest instead of addressing that they brought out black pigment and called it foundation. If they don't want dark skinned people in their make up just freaking be honest. But there is a lot of colourism in Asian countries so maybe that's where it came from. But a south Korean beauty brand just did an 11 shade increase and are bring out more and it's specifically for an international audience and i think that says it all really

Even if it was unintended exclusion at the start (i.e., if we're to believe the small brand with a small initial launch rhetoric), it sure seemed intentional once they released pure black pigmented paint and then doubled-down on it. And the founder doesn't get a pass with the "Asian market" bit, _should_ she ever try to use it, as she lives in Miami and graduated from Dartmouth. Youthforia's market is young and North American and she d@mn well knows that market includes plenty people of all colours ... and undertones.

Those body wash sheets probably would have worked if it was marketed as a camping product. Takes up almost no space and weighs almost nothing and if it's enviromentally safe and non-toxic that would be so golden to take with you on multiday trips.
Those Plus body wash sheets might have been better received if it was marketed to a different aspect of their audience. Those single use types of products are really useful in the camping world- hand wash, body soap, shampoo sheets, etc. Maybe marketed to festivals such as Coachella as an easy showering solution would have been helpful?

That's exactly what I thought, or to mom's, it would be perfect for storing in a purse, to use with young children. Think mini size for sticky hands in public places. Especially when more places are going to no hand towels. Sometimes wipes are just not enough.

You can buy packets of soap flakes or paper soap that are shaped like cute hearts or flower petals or other fun things. They tend to come in a handy plastic travel case and be sized so that one piece is appropriate for one hand washing. And the last set I bought was hello kitty themed and like $5.

A bit of a tangent but my son confused race and shirt color. He thought “white people” wore white tops, etc. You’d think that would end up being cute “purple guy” stuff but nope, most people wear neutrals & a 4 yo going around saying “there’s a black lady,” “there’s a white msn,” etc makes everyone nervous lol.

2. I work in the federal government and all of the executives are white males. It’s ridiculous. My executive told me a black woman that I had to call him sir/mister. Well that didn’t go over well with me. I gave him a good cursing out. It’s 2024 and then I proceeded to go over his boss’ head and talk to her. She sent out something to say that’s inappropriate. Yes we definitely need more women and diversity in the workplace.

you are orettty much high as a kite when they are actually doing the procedure - and you are done in under 15 minutes . You then get a really good nap ( like 4-5 hours ). You wake up and you can see !
@deborahwhitney9427 yes, as GravityFallsUp said, the reason these diversity measures are even in place is because for sp long, people who were best qualified to do a job were overlooked because they're different, whether it's because they're a woman, or a person of color, or of a non-Christian religion, or not straight, etc. When you are forced to look at others outside of your bubble and interact with them, we all grow and improve, and also allows the best person to be chosen for the job, because otherwise bias (sometimes known and intentional, sometimes completely unintentional and unconscious) will interfere and lead you to choose someone you like and relate to rather than the best fit for the job.
Even after watching the original video on this topic and all of the apology videos and tiktoks from the company, I'm having a hard time telling if the owner is genuinely this clueless and arrogant to think this would work or if it was malicious in that she set out to be this disrespectful out of spite.
The tiktok about her looking for a person to be the model made me think that she genuinely believed that she had done something and was just trying to find the perfect person to make it fit to prove that she was right. But I also have a hard time imagining that an owner of a makeup line who has other foundations wouldn't understand that one pigment creates one color and that that obviously does not work on human skin. This just seems like such an obvious fact that if she didn't know/didn't check is really concerning and if she didn't care is slightly disturbing.
I feel like the owners have no business doing cosmetics because when doing products, especially complexion products, they should be trying to get shades that match HUMAN skin. Not random plastic/skin sample things. They need to match them to human skin as they’re creating the shades so something like this doesn’t happen. They shouldn’t make the shade then go trying to find a match in the mall. They should already have a match from when they were creating it, which they obviously didn’t. So they either didn’t do that and just rushed it and didn’t work to match actual human skin tones or they knew it wouldn’t and didn’t care and were willing to risk it (but don’t know why they would. They’d have to know after releasing their crappy shade range initially, they’d be heavily scrutinized when they released deeper shades!)

I put drops in my eyes every evening from the ophthalmologist to PREVENT glaucoma and have to go back every 3 months to have the pressure checked and the last visit I was told cataract was starting 😢 SO I WOULD NOT BE PLAYING WITH MY EYES FOR VANITY!!!

Hi Jen. So on this color changing thing. I am writing from Costa Rica, a close relative to my husband did it in Spain in a regulated clinic, he had always wanted to have blue eyes. He is a very minor celebrity here and documented the whole thing in his social media. Bottom line, he looks like a vampire. He has fair skin but still looks super weird, the color was supposed to set in and look “normal” but it’s been about 6 months and it still looks the same weird as in the beginning

I'll stand firm that a company could make whatever shades it wants to, that's their business. I mean if I make earrings which I do as a craft, I don't make earrings for people with typical 14 gauge sized ear piercings, I only make them for gauged piercings because I have gauge piercings of 12, 8, and 6 and I'm looking after my audience if that makes sense.
You don't need to support but every company has the right to make whatever they want. Why do people want to force companies for inclusion? Even some companies that do have 50 shades aren't doing too well.

That’s still a wrong take and incomparable. Those are not equivalent, ear holes are a part of who you are but your skin color is a part of you. It’s a human feature. Born with you. Saying that if you make certain earring products for your audience and comparing it to this is so wrong. That means that youthphoria audience is lighter skinned people, purposely leaving darker skin people out. That is so wrong on a moral and ethical level. It’s not comparable to what you’re trying to suggest. The implications AND impact here are way stronger than just someone having different sized piercings.
I saw shade 600 in my local Ulta and it was even worse than expected. Not to mention they didn’t carry the whole range so there was a jump from 560 to 600.
The only shade before 600 is 580, and Golloria showed online how the 580 and 600 looked on her.

Colorism in the Asian skincare sphere seems to be a big player in Fiona’s strategy and wow, shows up really stark in the western and African market places. All she needed was to bring an Australian Aboriginal friend on to prove her point and a class could be taught on “colorism around the world”.
I have painted most of my life and colour mixing is part of that. With the pigments we have available it shouldn't be this hard. This makes me so mad, frustrated, disappointed for all my melanated friends out there. Heck, I am an olive and as a pasty person which is hard to find too (especially where I live) but at least I can make something work and I am not an afterthought or, worse, not even considered.

Lasik is FDA approved and that has significant complications for a shocking percentage of people who have it. I definitely wouldn't try the eye color changing procedure with the 12 percent complication rate cited in the clip. That's more than a one in nine chance of problems! I would like to change my eye color if there were a safe process to do so, but this ain't it.
I know someone that has to live permanently in dark rooms because of Lasik surgery. He cannot even go out at night without special sunglasses. It destroyed his life. People are crazy to risk it for an eye colour.
I have to agree. Sight is so valuable, and I'm not comfortable risking it for color. I wear contacts specifically because I'm too scared to do lasik. I can do pretty colors with them if I want to without having surgery.
FDA will be approving the wildest stuff, as a foreigner an approval from them is the same as nothing. you know those teeth whitening strips you can buy do to at home? in my home country theyre absolutely forbidden, teeth whitening can only be done by an actual dentists that wont leave the chemical on your teeth for too long so that it damages you enamel the least as possible. and the FDA allows for that chemical to be sold like chewing gum. and that's a mild example! cant even imagine what they would greenlit if it sounded profitable enough.

Not surprised about Boscia. They have a lot of stuff at Ross and even there it doesn’t get bought up, it always goes on clearance. I’ve been able to buy multiple of their jelly ball cleansers for 25¢ or 99¢ instead of the $22 retail price
I think what made this upsetting is for the first launch to have a picture with a dark brown shade and then when purchased to get a much lighter shade seems dishonest. And then upon supposed correction it just seemed like they tried to hurry up and just put out anything. They should have taken the time to research and mindfully consider how to make the proper shades.
The simple truth is that if you cannot handle the responsibility that comes with owning and running a brand, you do not deserve that place in the market. Fiona refused to take ownership of her mistakes, intentionally covered them up and moved forward most likely KNOWING shade 600 didn't work for dark skin and now she's facing the consequences. I don't wish harm on her, but she does not deserve to take up space in a saturated market that could go to a small black owned beauty company after what she did.
speaking as a artist, very little things are just naturally pure jet black. This especially goes for skin tones. Light or dark, skin is a blend of different colors. You’ll hardly ever see an artist use black straight from the tube. I thought it was rage bait because I can’t fathom they didn’t have anyone aware of this during production. But considering how they’re hiding maybe they’re just that ignorant?

Agreed! Bar soap has less packaging per use and can be more cost effective. Others have mentioned marketing this for hiking/festivals- I think that would’ve been great! But I’m also not sure it could’ve survived on that alone.

In your previous vid Jen you mentioned that you thought Fiona may have just given the lab an image of a very dark-skinned individual and told the lab to match that. It's very much on the lab for malicious compliance but also on YouthForia/Fiona for not QC'ing the foundation before trying to find someone to match it to - or even finding real people to match to in the first place while producing the product.
It's hard to tell if this was just an arrogant but misguided attempt to one-up Fenty or if it was a nasty way of telling darker skinned people to "shut up & take what you’re offered". Either way, neither scenario is at any way okay.

Outrage is an excellent marketing tool. Only thing that doesn't make sense is why they sent the produc to dark skinned influencers, but the whole thing brought massive brand recognition and fair skinned people know they have options, also no one has said anything bad about the product, to the contrary, it looks kind of good, even if it is the wrong shade, so their business will definitely profit off of people complaining about the shade range.

And a bar soap for washing my hands. For guests No😛 because that’s not hygienic.
I'm always looking for eco-friendly bodywashes, but bar soap is just too drying and kinda gross. Especially in the shower cause water is everywhere so it doesn't dry properly and just stays soggy :(. It's also very slippery 😅. So, yeah. I also thought that I could be that kind of girl and just use bar soap, but I didn't like to use it when I was a kid and I don't like it nowadays. Quite a while ago I've tried face wash in sheets (I thought it was a stupid gimmick so I bought it to try it out and be disappointed, but it actually was very useful for travel!). Those sheets are made out of dried foam. Very gentle and non-drying 👌. Storing them is still a hassle though 😅
There are some great face wash bars - my current one is creamy and a little bit moisturising, I'd tell you what but unfortunately I've lost the label! Wish me luck when I go search for a new one :)

If meta were to have an intentional, dramatic propaganda campaign that does not have Americans best interests in mind, then the US government knows what actions to take, and the people at meta also know this, which at least a disincentive for Meta to do so. This is not the case for TikTok. It's much harder to regulate companies that have ownership and decision making overseas.
And yes, it is anti Chinese in the sense that Chinese companies get much more scrutiny than, say, Canadian companies, or UK companies. China is not a close ally of America so America is more cautious of things affiliated with china.

I had the opportunity to make a documentary on "Women in STEM" for one of my courses. i had read and watched copious amounts of facts regarding why women participation is low and how changing that could be helpful. I used to hate my eye color, it was blue when i was young and slowly got darker. In my 20s they were more green forward hazel. Now at 44 they are more marble/cat eye hazel so they are greenish brown with spots in them, like a marble sort of. I actually really love them now and get compliments alot on my eye color. I probably would have changed them back in the days if i could have but im glad i didnt!

I saw a comment the other day saying "I'm almost fully blind and it's ridiculous how people play roulettet with their eyes every day" this was a video of someone dyeing their eyelashes with men's beard dye. It made me really think and lately I've been really careful/gentle with my eyes. Appretiating and loving them everyday because some people don't even know how they're favorite people look. Right?! My boyfriend is legally blind without his glasses. His lenses are at least 1-2cm thicker than his frames. He will get lasik eventually, and I'm super scared. He's a bit worried. But for vanity?! God that's just so. Not. Worth. It.
The correct steps in developing cosmetics should be creating a sample, testing it on models, changing the formula if necessary, testing it again, finalizing it and finally manufacturing. Youthphoria got it all wrong. The finalized the shade without even testing it, then when they tested and realized it didn't match anyone, it was too late. Morphe made the same mistake a few years ago when they created a foundation line with green and orange shades. These people aren't just problematic, in terms of doing business they're incompetent as well and deserve fiancial loss.

I think it’s high time a makeup brand set up a counter in Ulta/Sephora where people’s foundations are mixed on the spot. Not only will that fix issues like this, it’s also sustainable. Where I live there is a company Mix Beauty Lab that does this for all kinds of makeup not just foundation. You go in for an in person consultation and they formulate custom shades. You can also get a custom foundation from Dcypher.
That would be such an incredible service. They'd have to fix their lighting, tho. 😂🤣
Absolutely. The sheer number of ignorant and misinformed comments (and possibly some troll comments) in this section, going on about how people need to just deal with it and how not everything needs to be inclusive, is sadly not baffling, but also it is so exhausting to think about what a huge uphill battle this is sometimes. Still worth the fight though. All those comments are completely missing the point. People keep missing the underlying assumptions about race that accompany everything Youthforia keeps doing. And as nice as a foundation mix bar would be, it definitely wont keep creators and businesses from treating BIPOC and queer people as second and third class citizens.

i dont see how mixing product on the spot would be anywhere NEAR acesscible, hygienic, or hell consistent! what if it works like hairdressers? what if one time the poor minimum wage beautician gets your shade right, and then you go in again with other person and they give you a vile of orange? foundation isnt ice cream, cosmestics are not supposed to be taken out of their vile, let alone repoted from a big tub at a random corner of a mall... we didnt even talk about what if air enter the big tub of foudation? it oxides and then what? thats thousands of dollars!
however, i do feel like shades SHOULD have an standardized sorting system internationally. that way, once you know your shade, you know all brands that sell something that has that undertone, that depth. "05CB" doesnt mean anything when you buy from another brand and thats "3" and then on another one it's "toasted caramel".
standardizing it would also show brands that have a nowhere near even shade distribution, even if it looks like the darkest shades would fit you.
I saw some body wash sheets in Target last year. I don't know if they were Plus or another brand. I remember thinking about how unnecessarily complicated, pricey, and even over-packaged they were considering that bar soap exists. All the problems the sheets claimed to solve are already solved - and solved much better - by bars of soap.
I don’t think we need brands like Youthforia. First, such a dumb name. Second, if anyone calls this “learning and growing”, so help me gawd… it is 2024. You STILL need to learn?!?!
Unacceptable. In every way. From my heart, I hope that brand ceases to exist. This is not a mistake… 10+ years ago I might’ve considered it (doubt it).

I credit Fenty for the explosion of inclusive shade ranges. I am very light skinned, fair, or pale, however you chose to describe, and now find not only better shades but more warms, cools, and neutrals in many brands.
Had to jump in re: changing eye color. 1) I encourage people to read Toni Morrison's book The Bluest Eye. 2) Eye color is perfectly matched in Nature, and messing with eye color due to beauty standards or vanity is a recipe for disaster!
Good for Elf. As for Fiona Co Chan, some people, even ones with great ideas, aren't cut out for corporate careers, and she might be one of them. One of the questions we seem to be asking ourselves a lot lately as a consumer nation is how far good will and right intention goes when measured against extreme ignorance. Somehow, I don't think we'll find in her favor on this one, but I do hope she puts hers and her child's health first during this big mess.
No one asked her to cut production time 1/18 of its full time. Thats how you get products that harm people more than just their feelings. Ive seen products spoil bf hitting the shelves or have stiff in them because they were made too fast. Again no one asked her to do this.

I was born blind. I can't imagine anyone risking their site for something as cosmetic as changing eye color. I don't think people considering the surgery take enough time to think about what it would be like if they open their eyes and everything was black, permanently. I think this is a really unfortunate procedure, and I hope our FDA shuts it down somehow.

Skmeone else commented that it would have been best marketed to people who go camping/hiking... Still a superduper niche market, but I can't imagine how hard it would be to keep dirt/grass off of a bar soap, lmao
A friend of mine had the laser eye changing color and it is not permanent. They destroy the melanin and you are back to the color you had when you were a baby. But just as newborns colour change with time, your color comes back. My friend had the treatment done during 3 months for it to come back in one year.
The fact that the people with the deepest shades on Earth are pointing out the obvious "if you can't find a model to match even among our shade ranges, then ITS FACE PAIN NOT A FOUNDATION for a real skin tone!" speaks so much to how little market research goes into youthforia's products. I'm sorry, but that this was released WITHOUT sorting that out first, is pretty sad. I mean, it not like we can all pretend she "had no idea about undertones~!" when all the other shades have more than one pigment to make them capable of matching undertones... and this one is just straight up black fact paint that's been made a wee bit sheer so as to MAYBE show some of the natural skin pigment through it (to give the allusion to there being more colour in the undertones when its just black).
So the creator of youthforia wants us all to think she's too stupid to realize a foundation aught to have an undertone to it and more than one pigment, then? I'm not sure I believe the "she really thought this was what people were asking for" or "she really does think that's a legit skintone to produce and doesn't understand the backlash" lines...
The bottom line is that she should probably not have released the foundation line AT ALL if she didn't have solid light/white, mid/tan and deep set. At minimum, she should have had the lightest and darkest both ALREADY done and dusted, BEFORE launch.... And she should have tried to do the deepest shades first, just because they'd be the most tricky for her to develop (clearly they are).
I can only imagine walking out the store with my brand new box of Plus and it's raining hard outside. Bag or not I've never pulled my stuff out the bag and it be completely dry. I would cry. I mention it because I'm clumsy and absent-minded at times. 😭🤣❤
The eye color surgery makes me sad just because your eyes are just as unique as your finger print, as your unique skin tone... they make you, you.... I've had plastic surgery, im not against anything. But this just makes me so sad.

Eye color is so meaningful and so personal. I was born blind, and I was born with eyes that I was told were a blue green. As a teenager, I had to have my eyes removed surgically. When the ocularist made eyes for me to wear, he made them blue, not my natural blue green. I inherited my eye color from my grandma, and it has always upset me that someone else made a choice to give me blue eyes instead of what I had before.

Those soap sheets would have been great when I had broken my leg, was non-weight bearing, and couldn't shower regularly. I could see them also being useful in like... Hospitals and care homes, beyond the camping/outdoor activities areas. But not at that price. 😬

The Boscia charcoal jelly ball was the first product I was ever influenced to buy. Tati reviewed it and I immediately ran out to buy it. It’s bittersweet to see brands from the beginning of my makeup journey close, but I’m always excited to see what it makes room for
I wouldn't ever change my brown eyes. I like my brown color as my default and don't like the idea of lasers or needles near my eyes.
But even if u didn't prefer ur own eye color, with all the colored contacts out there, how could one limit themselves self to only one color and style???
There r so many styles: natural, unnatural, and many in btwns. And most are really comfortable too (similar to my Rx contacts) AND they often come in Rx up to -8.00. 😍

Complicated body washing product trying to compete with a basic wash cloth and bar of soap which is probably more eco-friendly and less finicky? Not surprised I'd never heard of it or that it didn't succeed long-term.

My eye colour was changed when I was near death. Apparently your body can burn pigment for energy faster than it can burn fat. I was 15 with a white streak & suddenly mid brown eyes (which used to be such a dark brown they were almost black). DON’T DO IT! I suffer from terrible migraines because my eyes get too much light. I was supposed to reflect most of it from my dark irises but now it all gets in & it hurts
I loved this. Thank you ❤ I remember using a blue peel off mask, a clear pink peel off mask and an opaque peach mask way back when. I did try the Boscia mask. It was very aggressive and it often needed a big cleanup afterwards.

KIKO MILANO is huge. Americans might not feel that because KIKO is not that popular in the States BUT as a portuguese woman I have to admit that KIKO is HUGE IN EUROPE. They have great products for good prices and their products are quite important in countries where ulta and other makeup stores don't exist. In portugal, the only big makeup stores we have are sephora and primor and they are pretty recent. KIKO was there since the begining. Not all countries have the amount of makeup store options that the USA has.
I was at an Ulta yesterday and they had testers for every shade except for 600
The Plus soap leaves was a bad idea from the start; you can find those in most camping stores for much cheaper AND they aren't unnecessarily individually packed, you just get a little pod of them like a cigarette packet. And the last place i found them in had them in shampoo and laundry soap versions too! Definitely not an at-home thing though, best for camping or travelling abroad.
