I've bought Ford oil for my Mondeo. I've thought that it isn't anything special, especially since it's so cheap, but I'm glad to see that it actually seems to be quite good quality oil.
As an ex R&D engineer for car part, I can tell you that most car manufacturers have a policy to use multiple suppliers for everything. This way if they have trouble with one supplier, then they have an alternative one and they don't have to stop production. This is why it is hard to say who makes it for VW. Different regions also have different suppliers, because it is not worth to ship oil from Europe to Asia for example. I can also confirm the statement for the OEM and aftermarket parts made by the same manufacturer. Same manufacturer can use older (worse) production lines / sites or worse quality materials. I have to say - you are the first youtuber that knows what gage R&R is! And it makes a good impression.
For VW oil it's been make by Castrol BP. We can insure it by verifying the batch number at the rear which use the same stock pattern as Castrol brand. So it's even the entire product make by Castrol shipped to VW fulfilment department. Edit: btw excellent work you are presenting us, keep it !
VW is with Castrol (BP) for years, me and my colleagues did the tender. Also, they use different oil for their brands, e.g. Skoda uses Total. They only cared about low price.. That's it. And if you compare the results you'll find it similar to Castrol Edge..
I dont know for the other brands but for VW the oil supplier depends on region, In Canada all VW group engine oils come from Wakefield, who License the Castrol brand from BP and blends the oil or imports it themselves (based on the specs VW/BP provide) even if a VW dealer orders VW branded bottles from "The Factory" the order is fullfilled by Wakefield (Castrol) outside of the distribution system VW uses. Mostly due to the fact its a hazardous material. The oil your Dealer uses for oil changes is purely supplied in bulk by a supplier and held in large tanks on site. Mechanics are not emptying bottles of oil into your car.
I don't agree with the rating for the oils' viscosity. A higher or lower viscosity doesn't make an oil better or worse, sometimes you want more viscosity and sometimes you want less depends on the design and operation of the mechanical components. What you should have tested is the oils' deviation from the standardized viscosity rating, ie how *different* the time they took to flow was compared to the SAE standard on the label, and how much it changes after the evaporation test, and ideally also how much it changes after being put through a certain number of lubrication cycles.

That's good to know, I've bought Ford Formula oil before & my philosophy was that if it's good enough for Ford to sell over the counter to their customers then it's good enough. And this test proves that. It's also a very reasonable price. Based on what I've heard from other people and mechanics, and my own car running for 320.000 km on the Mercedes 229.31 and now 229.51 oil without any issues in relation to lubrication, it's without any doubt a great oil for the money. There isn't really any reason to spend more money on something more expensive, the additive package seems to be just right and the price is very affordable. Out of curiosity: the result of the stickiness test is measured by the width of the remaining drop. Can I just add that very low temperatures will affect the quality of brand new oils in a way that wasn't explored here. Freezing temperatures cause the additives to drop out of suspension, particularly detergents and crucially anti foaming agents. This last additive is essential to prevent aeration of oil and metal to metal contact as bubbles replace oil in a given volume. Stored oil (particularly relevant if its over 5 years old and been stored out in a garage over winter) can be visually checked for this by emptying out the contents into a clear jug (the oil should still appear "bright" with no cloudiness) then cut open the original container and check for sludgy/slimy grey deposits in the bottom. If there is any, even if the oil was in a sealed container, its basically only good for oiling hinges, or recycling. This happens in fully synthetic oils too, a lesson that I learned and I ended up having to recycle 5+ litres of new Castrol. And also dumping the oil from my Suzuki GSX-R 750k after just 18 miles (!!!) when I checked the container some spare oil was in, and noticed bubbles on the surface through the sight glass. This is a great video, but oil quality can be trashed if its not stored correctly. All of mine is now at the back of my wardrobe, cool and dark, but never below 8°C. Sorry, I'm something of a geek too when it comes to doing home servicing.

VW oil is made by Castrol, more or less. Pretty much every VW/Audi dealership has both VW Genuine oil and Castrol. Even on oil cap it says "Castrol Recommended" If you pay attention, VW oil and Aral (both 1L and 4L) come in exactly the same bottle! VW is gray, Aral is blue but you get the idea.. And from what I know, Castrol and Aral are coming from the same factory SO... I use Castrol Edge 5W-40 (because original oil is only available with 5W-30 specs) in my VW Vento 1.9 TD (not TDI) and it has over 450,000km! :D Still going strong and pulls like a train hahah!
Hi, you forgot to mention one thing , the seals in every engine are tested with their specific oil for lubrification and wear resistance . No wonder BMW"s loose oil everywhere as nobody bothers to buy the original oil . If you want to your engine to last use original as nobody knows the exact composition of the oils . Aftermarket oil is good but is missing essential additives regardless of the manufacturer approval.
The quality of the product depends upon the Base Oil and Additives used i.e. Which refinery is using the latest technology for producing Group III / IV and Additives supplied by Infinium, Lubrizol and Afton.
Salut!
I'm almost certain that vw oil is made by castrol. They recommend castrol Edge oil for vw. My mk6 golf owners book recommends castrol. Also sticker in the engine bay recommends castrol
VW recommends OE oils. The after market oils are mentioned as a replacement if you cannot get any OE oil. And is region based. VWs "recommends" Castrol and Seat "recommends" Repsol, since these are the easiest to find in their respective markets/regions.
Everyone need to know that car makers do not make oil, despite the packaging. When I worked for a VW/Audi dealership the competition cars had BP logo's, yet we used castrol from a big tank, later castrol was a sponsor. Now take PSA, Peugeot recommended Esso, yet Citroen (same engines) recommended Total. Yet Renault recommended Elf which became Total. It's all about marketing. Any brand that meet's specs is good.
In Russia the oil for Mercedes is made by Lukoil but that's a rumor. Also in Russia many official dealers pour different oils instead of the original Mercedes oil if you don't tell to pour the official MB oil when giving in your car for service. The dealer Lukoil Mercedes now renamed to Lukavto poured Lukoil Genesis 5W-40. I was in shock that's really cheap oil. The factory of Lukoil oil in Russia is actually very good & was reviewed by a Russian blogger Alan Enileev. He went to the factory. Anyway I prefer original MB oil bought at the official Mercedes dealer.
Hello, I wanted to point out the expire date that applies to engine oils. Many auto traders said that if the oil is in between 5 years from the production date, it is ok but in my opinion not all car parts shops are store the oil correctly and the oil will degrade because of extreme heat or cold conditions. As that been said I bought a 4 year old oil for my car, after 5000 km my engine started to have noises at cold start. I have replaced the oil again but with a fresh date and my engine last over a year and aprox. 11.000 km until the cold start noises appear. Since then I always buy fresh oil for my car, meanwhile auto traders despear when they see me!!!!!

It doesn't matter who makes the oil. The additive chemistry and base stock of the oil matter. If it is approved by the engine manufacture and is approved by ILSAC or ACEA, it doesn't matter. They will all be fine.

I was hoping for lab results. Please send the oils off to a lab and share the results..
Lose not loose
Only lab tests can tell the truth.
Time to pour Ford oil in my volkswagen surprised with them results 👍
The quality of the product depends upon the Base Oil and Additives used
i.e. Which refinery is using the latest technology for producing Group III / IV and Additives supplied by Infinium, Lubrizol and Afton.
Salut!
Can you please test Honda genuine Oil
Cool videos. Keep up the good work. Respecte!
@Stimpy&Ren Copy, but Sergio does it much better tbh. Results vise, much more science.
Gasoline GmbH seems only to be a wholesale supplier. Not the oil manufacturer.
But i like your channel. Subscribed!
Manufacter of Ford oil was BP. Probably it still is today.
I'm almost certain that vw oil is made by castrol. They recommend castrol Edge oil for vw. My mk6 golf owners book recommends castrol. Also sticker in the engine bay recommends castrol
So does older BMW
Nowadays it's shell that provides oil for bmw.
Remember that castrol pays the car brand to have their brand name ad on a engine oil cap or owners book.
right...got a golf 6 as well
VW recommends OE oils. The after market oils are mentioned as a replacement if you cannot get any OE oil. And is region based. VWs "recommends" Castrol and Seat "recommends" Repsol, since these are the easiest to find in their respective markets/regions.
Wow, amazing video! Very informative 💯 Keep it up 👍🏽
Everyone need to know that car makers do not make oil, despite the packaging.
Now Castrol partener up with Renault and Vw with Mobil
Valvoline and Shell are base for most oils on the market. Remember that... ;)
Castrol buys base oil from Bosnian oil rafinery Modrica .... ;)
Remeber Arco and Chevron has the same base for gasoline too, don’t forget.
I agree! Mercedes use Valvoline and BMW use Shell.
de cand astept acest clip!!
Good job, thank you for your effort!
Foarte fain video-ul tau.Felicitari.
Timken test is great for hypoid oils. In this case not so much.
i can honestly say i dont know any shops in my city that use there own motor oil and i worked at them all...they all get there oil from bulk retailers like shell , Dodge uses penzoil, vw uses castrol, ford uses shell, chevy uses shell. i never in my life seen any of these bottles.
Salut! Foarte esentiale testele tale!
Mersi!
😊 culmea au și certificări Porsche sau MB
FUCHS is manufacturing for VW.
We tried toll blending but were refused as they have an agreement with them.
Well I believe FUCHS is the biggest independent Lube manufacturer and is producing the best Specialty Greases and Lubes with over 16,000 products.
We were buying Calcium Sulphonate Grease from them and it is the Best in business.
Just bought 25 (5 x 5l) Volkswagen long life 0w30 from a well known garage. On the label listed Shell.
Here in the US, VW oil is provided by Mobil 1
An Ideal comparison would be to include a brand-name oil that consumers can buy off the shelf, as an alternative to the factory oils.
Foarte interesant experimentul tau.
Hello, it seems that the new supplier for BMW oil is Shell - could be Shell helix ultra professional AM-L
he said in the video BMW oil is made by Shell.
It doesn't matter who makes the oil. The additive chemistry and base stock of the oil matter. If it is approved by the engine manufacture and is approved by ILSAC or ACEA, it doesn't matter. They will all be fine.
Could you do a test of Castrol 5W/30 LL3 (507.000)? It is the oil that most older VW uses.
That's what he tested
Great video you should have more subscribers keep up the good work could you do a video about cheap spark plugs vs like NGK
Thanks man for your tests!
Great video!
Could you also test mannol and Bp oils?
Great content you make 👌
i just subscribed because all the effort you take
interesting test, thank you! One note: BMW turbo engines run hotter than 180, usually closer to 200 degrees operating temp
Keep in mind though his test was at 180 degrees Celsius, not Fahrenheit.
Content foarte bun!
Great test!
Genius, the answers i wanted,, Thank You !
I'll buy better oil for my BMW then stock , just so I can feel in steering wheel that 0.2% invested flow of oil 🤯
Liquid Molly ftw
You should buy better oil for your car to prevent engine wear. Not to improve performance.
Put in the Ford oil 😜
Aveti stima mea! Subscribed
I hope motorbike oil is different:) Bmw motorbike-car as well-so probably in this video Bmw oil is by shell Ducati, Honda recommend Shell.I use Shell for my Suzuki because recommended Motul is double priced. But looks like is not the best.maybe these 3 biggest motorbike factory want you changed your bike more frequently:)
Very good video!! Do you think Castrol Edge is better than VW long life III original oil? Thanks body 😉👍
Valvoline Synpower number 1 !
Nice video. I would like to learn more how to spot fake products 😀
Nice video - good job
Very professional 👍
Multumesc anticipat
Hello there. Nice job and very good in explaining. Are you able to teat some direct comparison oils like standard for standard. Like VW 507.00 vs Amsoil 507.00 and some others that comply to the same standards.
Good to watch this experiment.
Esti super tare.
Good video. Very informative. Thanks.
I use Nulon oil in my car. Recommended is 15W40. Great oil.
Hi Sergiu , Can you please give me some information about my Oil. I have a Mercedes Sprinter 2.2 engine type OM651 with 130 horsepower from 2014. I began doing my own service because it was to expensive and I have put the Mobil1 ESP 5W30 but lately it’s hard to find it so I have found the original oil on Amazon it’s the same as you used in the video Mercedes Oil 5W30 229.51. My questions are this. Can I use this one even if in the maintenance book says that I should use 228.51 ? I don’t know the difference between them which is better?. Is the 229.51 Mercedes Oil good for my Mercedes 2.2 OM651?. Thank you for this great video and I have watched all of it… great job 👍👏. Have a lovely day
Nice video!
Thank you verry much for this research👌
Salut. Obiective testările tale. Fain.
