Beautifully unadorned melancholic black metal from the US. Across its 20-ish minutes, “Die Herrlichkeit” demonstrates Trist Død’s careful and deft command of the black metal spirit, skillfully balancing aggression, introspection, meditation, and contemplation. The acoustic passages stand out for their beauty, while the garage-y (or basement-y) recording quality of the black metal portions lends the album a sense of unabashed honesty and forthrightness. There is really nothing fancy going on here (except for the first riff on “IV” perhaps, which shines for its swing among some otherwise straight-ahead tunes); but, instead of detracting from the final product, this simplicity enhances the potency of the art and draws me in for repeated listens.
