HI ALL! I posted this to a couple of comments but just to make sure it's not missed, her book is actually being released this month on June 30, 2022! My company helped her son Vaughn to self-publish the book. It truly is an AMAZING story and she does NOT hold ANYTHING BACK!
Do you self-Publish?? I can use the help. I tried Designrr but it was a dud. Janey books, and I'm afraid to try Kindle. If you can self-Publish I have multiple manuscripts. I'm interested.👈
Gladys was a genuine, down to earth person and talent! Sad to see her gone too soon. These ladies were mistreated and over looked in the rewards they deserved. RIP Gladys!
Actually The Supremes were the first girl group at Motown but they weren’t making hits. The Marvelettes were the girl group at Motown that put them on the national pop charts first.
my favorite group out of 'Motown'...male or female. Her and Wanda Young-Rogers, just had a certain "thing" that no other female vocalists out of Motown, had.I cant put my finger on it, but there is a 'smokiness' in her voice that is extremely seductive. But standing on flat feet, she could flat out, BLOW. Their songs were uniquely theirs...
THANKS FOR THIS POST.....THE MARVELETTES WERE GREAT,BOY THEY COULD SING, THEY WERE VERY PRETTY AND HAD TALENT. THEY SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL FAME.
took a trip to Detroit last week. I’ve wanted to visit the museum for years. I’m happy to say that when you walk in the front door, there’s a “wall of fame” to the right. About 30ff in length and not only are the Marvelettes on that wall… they are featured right outside of the gift shop. All 4 of them. Life size! And they are the only artists in the entire museum featured in life size. They are also mentioned a few times by the tour guide and in the gift shop you can by a decorative ceramic Marvelettes tile/coaster. There’s also a 15 minute video that includes Mr Postman being Motown’s 1st number 1 hit. I’m just sorry that it all came too late. It’s a shame they didn’t receive the support they were entitled to. And it’s terrible that 60 years later, they aren’t in the RnR HoF. Sharing that joy with Diana Ross, Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight and Claudette Robinson.
Gladys Horton was a true class act! The Marvelettes might just be my favorite girl group in the history of Motown regardless of how they were lowkey shunned by the company itself. When you don't have the proper backing and cheer squad in your own camp well how the Marvelettes are regarded is what happens...and it's unfortunate. Fun, cute and talented group with more than one strong lead who had some writing credits.
Glad to hear this interview and get to hear Glady's side of the story and her feelings. Sad that she was not able to see the fruits of their labor and it is sad that Smokey did them like that!
Gladys and the Marvelettes were the trend setters and set the stage for girl groups to follow - along with the Shirelles - the Marvelletes launched Motown - I love how gracious Gladys is here in the interview giving credit to her fellow performers including the Supremes - Mary Wells and the rest - she was just so good at what she did - and don't forget those memorable dance moves in their live shows - simply the best! Gladys and Wanda! 😍😍😍
I am so glad ...Mary Wilson knew what to do... Mary was the ultimate Supreme...she was going to let it be known...she and Flo the greatest ..so Gladys was the best..with Wanda...
Her book was one of the most interesting and honest books I have read. Although gone, I’m glad she’s not forgotten. I was shocked to see young people at an event running to the floor to dance with the house music version of “Postman.”
That's a shame, they gave Motown it's first Number One Pop tune, and don't have anything to show for it, no gold record, no rock and roll hall of Fame induction, no lifetime achievement, no nothing but the supremes came from no where and scored 12 number one pop tunes. The Marvalletes need some kinda recognition.
The Marvelletes were the trailblazers of Motown! They had 10 hits that was 2 shy of The Supremes 12!! Although they never received crossover success, they still have a place in history BG! You can't erase them! They weren't even invited to Motown 25!? And only mentioned in passing by Richard Pryor who was hosting! They absolutely need reparations and inducted into Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! Period.
The Marvelettes had a number one song and that was Mr. Postman. The Supremes had 12 Number One records. Big difference. The Marvelettes were still pretty hot up until 1968 or 1969. Glamorous to the max but it was sad to see when Gladys left the group.
@@Vincent50 The Supremes had promotion from Motown so that made the difference. They did NOT have the same level of talent that The Marvelettes had. Their stage shows were phenomenal! All of their albums were excellent and had substance!

The first Motown 45 I ever bought was 'Too Many Fish In The Sea', the first Motown album was 'Marvelettes Greatest Hits'. 'Too Many Fish....' is still my favorite Motown song. And I have loved them ever since, more so now. Completely underrated and underappreciated and disgracefully not in the RNR HOF. That is something I will never understand. Sadly, Gladys and now Wanda are gone. Two wonderful lead singers.
Loved The Marvelettes. They truly paved the way for not only Motown’s talented & gifted female groups, but oh so many (non-Motown) groups that followed. Gladys & the original Marvelettes are stapled to my heart & soul forever ✨💕🌹🤗🙏🏼✨
Gladys was very bitter but she had a right to feel that way as the Marvelettes were very badly treated. Her son now has the manuscript and just like Gladys he has been trying but failing to get it published. Sadly it never will be for a number of reasons.
It’s really is sad they they are not allowing him to publish her story. I recall hearing that Florence Ballard of the Supremes wrote one herself as well before her passing, but it disappeared after Motown obtained it. I’m hoping that they will be published soon.

It’s unfortunate how Gordy cheated the very artists that gave him his recognition and wealth. The all should have put their truth in books. They pretty much suffered in silence. The truth needs to be told and they (Funk Brothers-everyone other than Stevie and Smokey) needs to tell it.

this is a classic revelation on just how corrupt the Motown machine really was. in fact auto spelling suggested "reevaluation" both are more than correct. the greed and obsessive demand for control and self by some at Motown is almost unbelievable.
Mr. Gordy got ripped off, early in his endeavor to create a recording studio!! His father gave.him the advice: "Make sure YOU own the business! All record companies did it!! Gladys RIP!!! 😇😇😇
I hope the "Truth in Music Advertising" act, even though it was only enacted in 35 of the 50 states, can put a stop to some of this music business chicanery.
