11 Days Solo Camping in the Yukon Wilderness - Special Episode 2.0 Spell of the Yukon:
Now that my Spell of the Yukon series has ended, I wanted to share this special episode which is a condensed version of the last four episodes of the series. It covers me hiking up a tributary creek of the remote, Bonnet Plume River where I panned for gold, prospecting a nice gold nugget. I also found an off-grid log cabin, saw some wildlife (including Dall’s Sheep), I fly fished for Arctic Grayling, and more. I was all alone in the Yukon wilderness and making my way to the Peel River which I'd follow to my floatplane pick-up location. This river is so remote it necessitates both a fly-in and a fly-out. I was the only person to paddle the Bonnet Plume in 2022 meaning I literally had a massive wilderness area all to myself.
My next series will begin running next week so stay tuned for that and I’ll eventually be releasing a full documentary version of this adventure as well.
The Yukon is a place where dreams are made and where adventurers have been going to follow their dreams since the Klondike gold rush in the 1880s. As much as anyone, I went there to follow my dreams and they became a reality…..but like Robert Service's poem the Spell of the Yukon says "I want to go back, and I will" which I did. This film series covers my second big solo adventure in the Yukon. To check out my first one, click the link here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNCMd...

Come on, Jim. You didn’t find that gold on the Bonnet Plume. It isn’t even a gold-bearing river. A quarter-ounces like that would be by far the biggest piece ever found on that river, and would be a lifelong prospector’s dream. Yet somehow you found it after just a couple hours of panning? Give me a break. Your awareness of where gold lies and your poor techniques make your stunt even more obvious. Stick to canoeing and fishing, or get in touch with a legit prospector and learn how to do it the right way, and don’t pull those stunts on your viewers.

@@Ray-Willey It took a quick Google search for me to learn that the Bonnet Plume is not gold-bearing. The geology for the area is totally wrong for gold. There’s even an article from the New York Times explaining that this is why the area is still so undeveloped. Now here comes Jim, proclaiming mantras about preserving wilderness, while at the same time recklessly announcing the find of a nugget that is significantly larger than the finds that have started actual gold rushes. Thankfully, any hobby prospector can see how painfully obvious it is that he planted this piece in his pan. If he had watched just one UA-cam video from a hobby prospector, he could have cleaned up his act and come up with a more believable stunt. There’s a bunch on UA-cam, watch for yourself: Dan Hurd, Pioneer Pauly, VoGus, etc… Notice how different their technique is from his, and notice how excited they get about tiny little flakes. They’d only ever dream of pulling out a piece like his, and they’ve been doing this all their lives!
But for anyone who was previously clueless about how to find gold, well he just made them even more clueless.

@Stephen Chase google will tell you there is no gold where I live also! Lol, guess what....

      @sc88334 Рік тому +3

@@Ray-Willey If that gold is real, Jim needs to take down this video immediately. He will start a gold rush, whether the land is protected or not. That’s a $300 piece of gold in his pan. If it was that easy for him to find, there will be thousands of dollars of gold nearby.

I just want to express my thanks and gratitude for you and your brother Ted for the incredible adventures you have showed. The scenery is breathtaking as is the fishing. The wildlife is beyond anything in my neck of the woods( ma.) There was a time when I went on insane adventures but nothing compared to what you guys do. I just can't do this anymore. Knees are shot and in my late 70's. With that being said, Thank You. Looking forward to more adventures. God bless you both.

Still, in 2016 I did a trip in May, (starting the weekend after May 24 long weekend), we went from Lake Opeongo into the Crow River to the Petawawa which we followed to the eastern park border at McManus Lake and we didn’t see anyone for five days.

    Bonus Episode?? YEEEEEEEEAAAHHH!!!
This has been my favorite series to date (I know, I always say that lol) BUT, the white water, the choices you made, the gold, your humor, and absolutely the scenery. Wow the scenery, absolutely breathtaking! It was all just next-level this time. Particularly the Cabin you explored, thinking of what life was like for whomever lived there, the view out the window, it was surreal. Maybe someday you'll go back with one of your sons and finally get to hike into that lake. I also liked the little spring fed waterfall coming out of the mountain. The braided section was very interesting. Much more difficult than one would imagine. I always enjoy watching and learning from you, Jim, you're a real inspiration. My favorite UA-camr and Adventurer without a doubt, thanks again for taking us along!

@@davidmodeland429 Read through my replies on other peoples’ comments on this post. Jim’s claim is insulting to anyone who’s ever done any legit prospecting before. His technique is all wrong, as is his awareness of where gold settles in rivers. On top of that, the Bonnet Plume is historically famous for not being gold-bearing. The geology is wrong for gold. That’s why the area is so underdeveloped compared to the rest of Yukon. Jim’s claim is reckless because it could open interest in mineral extraction in this area that he claims to want to preserve. So not only is he lying, but his lie could open the door to destruction of the local wilderness. Simply foolhardy.

I can appreciate you really really wanting to "preserve nature" if that's what your goal here is. But by just telling ppl about it you're not going to inspire people to invest their time and energy into making efforts to preserve a place like this, you need to actually show them like Jim does. And read comment, no one is going to go look for gold because Jim found some. I'll bet you a gold nugget!!

You are a good paddler. I paddled the Wind/Peel to taco bar in 2016. That view into the start of the canyon on the peel is beautiful. I was very worried about that canyon all the way down the Wind, I had a novice paddler in my bow, but in the end it was nothing. The Peel can be a real slog after that. Great country. I would love to get back there before I'm done. Aren't we lucky to have this beautiful wilderness still out there. We need to keep it. Save the Peel.

@@JimBairdAdventurer So many rivers to be paddled. I fear I may have paddled my last true northern river. I may have retired about two years to late. We'll see. I'll need to get back in shape and convince my wife its ok for a 70somthing old fart to paddle rivers up there. I think you are enticed by the white water. I once enjoyed a lot of white water in open tripping boats. But, as I have gotten older, I confess I find it stressful. Now I prefer a bit of white water, yes, but mostly for me it is about getting into very wild places and seen all the country and the wildlife. Doesn't make for great youtube videos. But, it is a wonderful thing to do. Consider the Thelon and the Horton both of which are very wild and beautiful but not such heavy white water. More on the barrenlands end of the spectrum. Maybe the Back?

I really enjoyed the float/paddle down the Peele River. The images of the cliffs were striking with vertical bedding and overturned folding of the rocks and then normal flat bedding for much of your trip. Very impressive. Also very happy you found some gold, Sam McGee from Tennessee would have been jealous.

With your smoked muscles that your going to take out. You sure look tired. Like you could just crash right then and there. Thanks for sharing this amazing adventure. You sure have guts. I’m in awe. This was the most isolated in nature video I’ve ever watched. I will watch again it’s that good

It’s funny how one day you look in the mirror see the wrinkles and realize many dreams will never be. A trip like this down a northern Canada river has been my top dream in life since my teens but it was never meant to be. Spent summers in Ontario on the shores of Lake Superior and the tales I heard from my grandfather about trips into the bush kindled a lifelong fire. I thank you for these videos. It’s so refreshing to see a regular guy go and enjoy. What an amazing trip. I wish you nothing but the best!!

I grew up on the eastern shore of Lake Superior with endless wilderness as the back yard.
Stumbled on the 1st video and just watched this 2nd one.
It's wonderful to travel along with a good woodsman and canoist.
