- The highlight of this weekends tour would see the rarity of an A4 traverse Sapperton Bank as 60009 'Union Of South Africa heads the Cotswold Venturer from London to Worcester. It's been nearly three years since I last witnessed an A4 on the mainline so I was eager to see some of her trademark mannerisms, for example Chime, speed and power ! Thankfully all feature here !
The day starts off at Culham, where we luckily manage to avoid a southbound service train, the A4 is seen twice on the long sweeping curve as it heads to north towards Oxford. With a lengthy operational layover this allowed us to get ahead and over to the Cotswolds but our main choice for a locations was not accessible, and due to time constraints we had to settle for two shots running down Campden Bank. The highlight was at Honeybourne station where the A4 passed at 70mph+ ! For the return the leg is was all about the winding Bank of Sapperton located in the Golden Valley, which is now known as the Golden Jungle due to the fast growth in vegetation. All the well known popular spots are near gone and some off piste trekking was required to find any sort of shot ! The A4 is seen twice as it lays down the power with plenty of chime whistling for upcoming crossings. There's a bit of focusing issues on the final shot which was disappointing, though fortunately this doesn't affect the main approach too much. Annoying as it's not something Iv'e encountered before. Regardless, it was great to see Number 9 in superb form !
I hope you enjoy the video. - Авто та транспорт
Well done, brilliant clips at outstanding locations and I'm still in love with the A4 after over 65 years of watching them.
Fabulous. Comments re artist on the shovel fully seconded! Lovely shots
There is something very special about the A4 chime whistles. Even the Tornado has one fitted (ex A4 "Golden Eagle", scrapped in 1964) on the off-side smoke deflection panel. A superb video, much enjoyed, Many thanks, Henry.
Lovely cinematography,of a grand old lady of the steam era...........Thank you ! :-)
Union is amazing i love you forever and ever
Very well done, Liam and Phil. Those mannerisms certainly do feature here, to great effect. Focussing not a problem from here, in fact the expert panning/zooming had me swivelling in the chair while following 60009 round at speed! Thanks for sharing, Bob.
It just doesn't get better than that, what a show. Brilliant video as always!
Past, present and future in one clip. UoSA, a Turbo and an electrification mast. Wonderful footage as always
On sat 16th sept I had a very enjoyable day riding behind 60009 at NVR and close up despite showers.
Many thanks for providing a different perspective from the one I was able to have .Philip
I've had a trip behind 60009 as well but at the ELR - Would love to have been on a trip at 70 with her!
Fantastically captured, what a lovely sound up Sapperton!
Great selection of locations and captured excellently.
As you say , much over grown. I looked at this spot ( last clip) last week, but ended up at the crossing above (20 +) people. Great film as ever and many thanks for showing.

Great video work filming and editing. Thanks for sharing
Terrific locations Thank you
Nice camera work ! Thanks for sharing !
Hi Liam, great shots again. I only chose to do two and was at Sapperton Tunnel for my second. Geraint
Whoever was firing was an artist, full power and very little smoke and no steam wastage.
Rod Brown As an ex railwayman I thought that too. Very well fired.
Great compilation ..Dave
Fantastic ... i wondered where you would be this weekend. Great work and thank you :)
Hi Liam , just found your video , very good ..Dave
Kinda sad it's no longer running for now, but hopefully I'll be able to see it run again in my and my friends and family's life time
Good stirring stuff, in spite of the vegetation.
Nice one Liam and Phil. Must apologise for my arm flailing about in your dad's shot at Sapperton, but I'd just been hit by some red hot smuts from 60009 and it really hurt! Dave.
Great stuff lads.
4.44 Great Shot
this engine the A4 to date is my fav one to operate on a train simulator
Going quite well, though not a patch on a Duchess. :D
