    Mr. Frost, as relatively new photography hobbyist (for 3 years now), I'm a fan of your content. Seeing a minidisc player included in this video has somehow endeared you to me even further. Keep on keeping on! And thanks for the great content.

      That was a small blast from the past. Minidiscs were always and still are the coolest portable audio players.

    Great review as always . Nikon advertise that it has some kind of weather sealing . I bought this lens and i think it's a gem , better than my Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 ( Nikon is sharper ) , Fuji XF 23mm F2 ( Nikon close up quality destroys it ) , and as good as my Canon 22mm F2 or Olympus 17mm F1.2 .
    My copy is razor sharp in 3/4 of the frame straight from f1.7 and the extreme corners never keep up but it still better than the Zeiss and the Fuji . Also F1.7 is exactly half a stop between F1.4 and F2 and versus the F2 of the Canon and Fuji's it's a nice little bonus to have on APS-C .
    For the 190€ i paid for it it's a bargain of a lens and because it's so light and compact at 130g , it is now my favorite 35mm equivalent on APS-C format .

    Honestly your reviews are the best out there. I've been following you since the beginning of my photography journey a few years back and I'm always happy when I see you reviewed something I'm thinking of getting.
    So, thanks a lot for all those videos!

    Chris, Thanks for getting to this lens. I’ve switched whole hog into Nikon Z and use a Z50 for travel and every day carry. When Nikon gives us a Z50ii with IBIS i’ll no doubt get this lens.

    • @craigcarlson4022
      @craigcarlson4022 6 місяців тому +2

      @@FTRek IMHO, its practical value would go up quite a bit with IBIS. Without some sort of IBIS or VR, one is left needing to raise the shutter speed to eliminate any motion from the user.

    • @ecoolio
      @ecoolio 2 місяці тому

      @@FTRekSimilar opinion to Craig. It’s already good, but IBIS sweetens the deal and makes fast, normal wide to short tele lenses even more useful (though it’s more common to see OIS on short teles anyways). As someone who feels a bit limited in my low light shooting ability (no medium lens faster than 2.8 on a 2013/14 canon, though of course with more expertise I could work around those limitations), the eventual upgrade would feel even more significant. 1 or 2 stops better ISO on mirrorless, 1 or 2 stops faster lens, and then a few more stops on top with IBIS or OIS would probably feel like an entirely different realm of low light possibilities, though I shouldn’t let my expectations run away. Plus being able to focus pretty well at those light levels too. Night street, portraits, events, and my usual environmental

      Interestingly, like the 40mm and 28mm lenses, Nikon states that this lens is “dust and drip resistant.” It looks like there are some seals throughout the body of the lens, just not around the mount. I wonder if that has something to do with the plastic mount.

    Great review as always. Of the many ones I've watched, this is one I've actually had for 6 months with a Z30. IDK if my lens is defective or this is normal, but there is very strong vignetting at the corners in low light at wide aperture (main reason I got this was for low light). I take all RAW images and have to adjust corrections (vignette control?) in Nikon NX Studio to get many of the wider aperture images to look right. It's less noticeable in bright light as in the vignette testing in this review.

  • @ecoolio

    Gotta admit, the sharpness seems disappointing, even for me who doesn’t have the exacting standards many do these days. At 1080p the middle seems to get a nice ‘bite’ of sharpness at f4 but the corners never really seem to get close, even at 20mp. Wide open is one thing, but I like the option to clean things up when I have the light to stop down. Maybe I’ll check some other images online. If I could find it for under 200$ like another commenter here I’d probably put up with the limitations though.

    Ummmm. No in-built VR like the kit lens? No weather sealing? Plastic build and plastic MOUNT? I think I'll wait for the Viltrox 20mm f2.8 to be released very soon for the Z mount this year. And it's only US$158. Basically, the same as this Nikon lens albeit, metal mount. Plus it's got a USB-C port for lens firmware update. And this Viltrox works on FULL Frame, too. ☺️

  • @SovietLensReviews
    @SovietLensReviews 6 місяців тому +2

    Weird that the lens doesn't stop down to f/16 - there's the odd occasion where it's useful when taking a long exposure. Also, a shame the corner image quality isn't great, but I guess that's what you get with a cheap plastic disposable lens.

    Thanks for another terrific review. After watching so many of them, I'm not sold on Z mount lenses. There are a few high performers, but many of them perform poorly in the corners and exhibit considerable purple fringing/chromatic aberrations, like this 24mm f/1.7. One might get better results using older manual or F mount lenses with an FTZ adapter. And in most cases, it would be a much cheaper alternative. Thanks.

  • @GinoFoto

    APS-C lenses for RF aren't as necessary, I bought RF 24mm f/1.8 IS macro STM for only 170€ more (new in ofical Canon distribution) than this Z cost, while my lens isn't that much bigger, offer excellent image stabilization, 50% macro capability and it is sharper.

    Charge us $50.00 for a metal lens mount for more robust mount. Weather sealing would be nice in that price too. Plastic mounts are a dicey deal for me. Many of my customers will break that plastic mount too. This looks like a decent lens otherwise. Price doesn't scare too much.

      Tbh, I've owned a cheap 18-55mm Nikon kit lens, which has seen all kind of abuse over the years and can say that the mount never broke on me. I personally would prefer to save 50 bux on a lens like this as I would buy it primarily if I want something cheap.

I have various lenses for my Sony camera - from Sony, Sigma, Zeiss, Tamron, VIltrox, Samyang, Laowa and even TTartisan and noone make those cheap plastic mounts that will get destroyed if I remove the lens 5 times.

    • @ecoolio
      @ecoolio 2 місяці тому

      I have four plastic mount lenses (nikon 28-80 G, canon 18-55, 55-250, 10-18) and probably have had more in the past, and have so far never had one break or otherwise become unusable on me. In fact, only my FD 300F4, heavy as it was, had it’s mount get messed up by a hard fall (god I need to get that repaired so I can sell or adapt it). There’s something to be said about plastic fantastic gear so light it can probably bounce back from a fall, rather than tearing itself apart with the forces.
