This camera needs its own line of small primes with aperture on the lens and they need to look just like the old manual focus ai lenses. It’s a beautiful camera.
I agree. Hope this Zfc is a success and Nikon develops the DX VR primes we want.

Z fc stands for Z Fujifilm Camera.
I like the retro design and direction it’s going, I hope they do well. It’s why I like using the Fujifilm cameras, you get more of a tactile vibe.

You have to enjoy the experience to pick up your camera... very well said. I love to have mine in my hands and shoot with it. Not a pro here, but a driven amateur. I enjoy my old DSLRs as well, and I still use them for wildlife and macro with my F mount lenses, but thanks to the compact size and weight, the Z fc has become my daily companion.
I actually like this little thing. I just hope Nikon makes some more retro styled lenses for it. Also I was looking at the back of the camera earlier and it has no AF joystick, so I'm assuming you change AF points using that circle pad around the OK button?
Yes, you have to use D-pad or back screen to select your focus point.

Great job on this one, Seth! It looks like Nikon has put out a really fun camera. I think it was a good choice to show off the streaming capabilities. That seems a little risky, given unfinalized firmware, but it appears to have been no sweat! And the stills look great as well. I feel like this one is going to be a popular option. I know I want one!
Manual controls are not for romance of photography, they are for confirmed setting change while looking at the subject, without looking at menus or hoping your gesture actually registered... Just an opinion.

"This is not like a feature" he said about the rather major feature that you can flip the screen in, in a way that protects it against scratches when hanging in a sling all day long ... I'd say this is a MAJOR feature for someone wanting this camera for an everyday carry camera, with the 28/2.8....

Neat camera Seth, it reminds me of my Nikon FE2 back in the day which I loved. I actually bought it from Adorama when they were located in an office bldg on a floor I can't remember by Macy's at Herald Square when the were mainly mail order. I'm heavily invested in the Z system owning the Z 6II and Z 7II along with some Z Glass, along with my Nikon DLSRs. This could be a possible grab & go or travel camera because of the size and features. Looks like it would be fun to shoot.

FM 3 is amazing - i'm still using my F and FM. Literally wanting this camera for how it brings back the fun I had using my FM-10 as a teenager. great overall review!
I just got my hands on one today. Gorgeous camera! And I paired it with a retro Nikkor 50mm 1.2 Ai which is a stunning looking combo. Actual manual lens with all the manual dials... I just can't get enough of it! I never had the temptation to look at y camera after every shot, this one makes me do this! Moreover, the old school 50mm Nikkor gives it the weight for an authentic retro feel.
I have a D810 and have been tempted to get into the mirrorless side of things but it’s hard to justify the jump to an equivalent Z camera. I learned on a K1000 and just grabbed a KM for cheap… I saw this and had to get it. Entry into the Z series, exactly what I want for that nostalgia hit, and can give me a reason to gradually stock up on Z lenses.
Everyone talks about the FM, I love my Nikon FE.

I enjoy and have owned Fuji X cameras but only want to invest in and use one primarily full frame camera system, the Nikon Z mount. This little retro gem is what I've been waiting for as a second body.

the best crop camera in existence is the D500 which has 20.9 mp..don't get hung up on the little things

Seems tempting, but there is no built-in flash on the Zfc. Fill flash is so useful.
They just need to make it so the z50 can be used with the power connected or someone come out with a dummy battery. I may get one with the 28 since I have the z50 kit and adaptor with my older lenses.
Seth great camera I had it in my hands yesterday finally in South America Medellin Colombia I had the D200 for years and have now the D800 since 2013 June still happy with it but this is getting me into mirrorless Z mount the only things missing is IBIS and 1/8000 of a second .I was in June this year in NYC with my family and bought myself the Sigma 105 mm F1.4 Art at Adorama 21st of June I saw a UA-cam using a 105mm F1.4 with this camera wow .Ps I saw your live 1on 1 with the Aussie Matt Irwin !Smallrig has a great L shape plate with arcaSwiss build in and a cold shoe .
Love my z50. I honestly want this for the flip screen alone! Had Nikon added that on the z50 originally, it'd have been that much better! Like own the entry level mirrorless camera market good.
No fill-in flash on camera like z50.
Yes I have a Nikon D5500 and it has a flippy out screen.
I have been putting off gnig to Z as no flip screen.
But now I can with the Zfc
I hope they add some flippy screens to other Z models

What I care about is wildlife photography. How is the Z fc stack up for this form of photography?
I dig it.. as someone who was a Nikon APS-C user, who moved to a Fuji X30, and looking at the X-T or XE series, this brings me back to Nikon... my issue is the $300 for FTZ for my DX lenses... and wish there was a Zfc-R version, as I kind of hooked on rangefinder body styles... otherwise a good move for Nikon...with the Z50, don't see them needing to have a D3000, D5000 or even D7000 series DSLR's anymore...

F-mount should have changed in the 80's like Canon did when they transitioned to their EOS system. Keep dreaming (my god I'm tired of seeing these comments, no offense to you. And yes, I've owned some of the best retro F-Glass). it's so tiring...... zzzzzzzzzz. I think I'll go to my doctor and say i have F-fatigue
FTZ adapter solves that problem.
mirrorless with f mount makes no sense. f mount is built especialy for a mirror. use the ftz adapter or use the d780 with fliped up mirror. therefore the zfc mounts f glass with the ftz adapter (or much cheaper 3party only mechanical adapters for vintage glass).
the only downside is that af-d lenses lose the autofocus (but think about: screw-af is very outdatet and unprecise. economicaly it makes no sense to implement this type of af-drive and make the adapter even more expensiv as it allready is).

I want the following for Nikon APSC Z cameras:
1. A wider zoom. Maybe a 10/12-20mm for vlogging.
2. Small primes of 28, 35, 50mm equivalents

I tried this camera and may buy one (again) at some point, but I felt for the price, there's too much of a plastic-feel to the camera. I mean the Z50 feels more substantial compared to this camera (plus I think the Z50 may be weather sealed or weather resistent at least, whereas I don't think the Zfc is). I mean I do like the dials on top (I sold my Fuji because I'm mostly a Nikon shooter and having two separate systems was getting expensive).
The articulating screen is nice especially if you're doing street photography because it can ensure that the LCD doesn't light-up while you're shooting and you can review images in the EVF more discretely without worrying about the LCD accidentally turning on, plus it does help to protect the LCD I think (I sort of wish the Z50 and Z5 had this).
I do have to say the 16-50 for being a kit lens, is actually quite good and rivals some of the other 16-50's out there. I'd probably say that it's better than the Sony PZ 16-50 but probably in the same ballpark as Fuji's 16-50 XC lens (although the XC lens is a big bigger). So the 16-50 Z lens is a good kit lens, and it is nice that you can also mount the full frame Z lenses on this camera as well.
I think Nikon does need to do a 35mm DX lens (for 52mm equivalent AOV) for the APS-C sensors (like they did with the DSLRs) and maybe an 18mm for those who want a 27mm equivalent for street photography. They do now of course have the 18-140, 12-28 so they are covering many of the common FLs for the APS-C line which is good. Now I think they just need a 70-300 Z DX lens to complete the line-up (and maybe a DX specific macro).
Nikon are onto a real winner here and I’m defo in for one of the colored bodies. Unlike the Z50 I particularly like the flippy screen and the audio out jack for vlogging. Problem is choosing which style……..and availability !
Unless there is something really crap on this, then this is a winner finally for Nikon

I have the z50. A shame they do not have the power feature that allows you to do continuous live stream. I wanted to do that with z50 but no dummy battery available. I may get this with the 28 since I have the kit for z50 and z mount for my old lenses.

The other Z Cameras have U1,U2,U3 on the top dial button. Does the Nikon Zfc have it buried in the menus?
Hi Seth, do you think Nikon should put pop up flashes onto to these lower end cameras.
Eg If I take it to a party or dinner, it means I have to use high ISO (mucking around) or a LED light (inconvenient)

Thank you for the video. My query : 28mm f2.8se has any distance scale on the body of the lens. This scale helps a lot to take pictures at night as well as in landscape photography to do focus manually.
On getting your answer I would buy Z-fc + 28mm f2.8 se lens.

How's the image quality?
It's a beautiful camera with great features but Nikon really gotta support it's APS-C Lenses, like even Sony and Canon have better APS-C Lenses and their neglected. I think Nikon needs to open up to thirdparty manufacturers so Sigma, Viltrox, and the like can make proper lenses like the 23mm 1.4, 56mm for portrait and do much more.
Second criticism is that the video features with no crop in 4k is great but giving us the same contrasty flat profile instead of a proper log profile like it's competitor Fujifilm has in many of their cameras in this price range
Waiting for you to spin those dials to make adjustments while holding that reflector in the other hand and no grip to "like grip." Great video to demonstrate why this camera is not suited for one hand shooters.
Connected by USB, do you have 1080p or even 4k direct to OBS?? Because your video looks a bit funny, fps maybe...I tried it with a sony a6500 and sony utility and the image is really bad... What I mean, is that the sony software were caping the camera

It is fx and works fine. almost all fx mount lens work fine with DX
looks like and feels like a Fuji. Finally another contestor tries the Retroline of Products. Don't know if i would go for Nikon here since they need to build up a complete new lens lineup or are the old DX Lenses compatible with AF?

This camera does a good job of looking like an old film camera but it is still a computer in a box. There is nothing like shooting with an analogue film camera, it is so different. Just because the camera looks vintage and has dials does not mean you will get the same experience.
I'm not switching for this, but if these lines and dx lenses expand - and especially if there are more bespoke film simulations then I'll get on board.

@Adorama, which lens do you recommend for someone who wants to use this camera to learn photography while shooting shallow depth-of-field, street photography and more candid type stuff? I was thinking of going with the 28mm.

Why is the OBS footage so .. crappy? Is that an OBS issue? As in, the bitrate is a lot lower, for streaming purposes?
The APS-C of the Z Mount does not make sense without IBIS. Most of Zmount lenses does not have VR build in so can be difficult useable on APS-C bodies without IBIS. For whom this camera build?Vloggers, not because most lenses does not VR and the body lack IBIS. Go to a walk and try vlogging without IBIs with the 24mm lens.
Image Stabilization? Seems like an important feature that was left out.
It's a pretty camera, but I am dubious if it's going to feel better to operate than the Z50 with its command dials. On top of that, the pricing is...interesting. For the price of the Zfc and a kit lens, you can get the Z50 + 16-50 + 50-250 + FTZ. That's a lot more money you are spending just for a fashion piece.

A question about the 28mm SE, I presume it has a dial, if so can it be configured to control aperture? I think I would use this camera mostly on auto focus, so it would be good if I could reconfigure it to control aperture, going old school on all of the controls.
Yes, the Focus Ring is actually a Control Ring. Can also be set for Aperture, Exposure Compensation, etc.
