I do like that Nikon took one lesson out of Sony’s playbook: They continue to innovate with each new camera, even if it means cheaper cameras do some things better than their older, more expensive flagship. Started with new IBIS in Zf, and now new EVF in Z6III.
Nice sounding camera… But as a Zf owner I am ecstatic about the update for “flexible colour” profiles in NX studio paired with the Nikon Image cloud. This is sure to make Fujifilm nervous as the flexibility to create film sims (amongst others) will be awesome but also to upload straight to Lightroom is game changing… Please make a video on these announcements as I think this is huge news!!
At 16:48 that 99% focusing hit rate is what i’m waiting for the last 5 years on a smaller Z body! No more missed focus as on my Z6/Z6ii/Z7ii👍 sold my Dslr for a smaller body, now it’s here finally..thats the only reason for me to upgrade AGAIN😂

Thank you for the review! As a Nikon Z6I user, I was ready to switch to Sony. One of the reasons I didn't consider the Z8 is due to its size. As a photojournalist, I need to carry the equipment all day long. I have watched some videos regarding Z6III autofocus. Even though it seems as a great improvement, compared to other brands, it does not seem as sticky to the subject and often hunts to the background or to an undesired subject. Hence, I am still undecided specially since I want to shoot sports and challenging events more often. Also, I am very disappointed that the Z6III does not have a sensor door to protect it from dust. This is one of my biggest complaints (besides the AF) from my Z6 since many footage got ruined.
Bro, with this new body, no more issues for shooting sports or wildlife. The files from this body is better compared to Z6II coz I used to have one until my Z8 arrived. Yes, agreed, that sensor shield was one of the reason why I switched to the Z8. It proved vital if you're out in the dessert, like I found flat out during my Namibia dessert. Yes it helps a lot especially when a sandstorm suddenly shifts your direction. I will test this new sibling out when I travel to India National Park. Great review as Ricci!

The strap anchor point... I remove these on all cameras. I mount a QR foot on my cameras and long lenses, I then use a Rapid Strap. So, if I have to quickly place my camera on a tripod, the foot is already on my camera body. Works seamlessly for me on production days. :)
Thank Ricci for such a COMPREHENSIVE review Nikon Z6III. I love it when you talk about its disadvantage too i.e. the strap loop is in the way of the memory card door when it opens.
Good stuff Ricci, interesting camera... I just still think I am heading down the 2nd Z8 body route though... I do not really have much use for the 24MP count. The Z8 is simply better and ideal for what I actually do! Interesting you note the card door jamming... when using a strap on all the other Z cameras this has been the case when the strap is 'loose'. I continually have to move it out of the way. I wondered when a reviewer might mention this.
Thanks for the great review. I really appreciate your comments that explain the camera and how features are used in real life. I also appreciate the balance you provide regarding things you don't like or prefer a change. I'm very excited to have a high performance camera with "standard" resolution - as opposed to high resolution with the Z7ii, Z8 and Z9. I've already sold my Z7ii and ordered the Z6iii with NPS priority. I'll pair it with my Z8 so I have the high resolution space covered. The AF improvements and high frame rate are important to me. It's also important to have similar layout of controls for times when I use two bodies side by side. The EVF improvements will be a positive but not critical for me. The flippy LCD is fine - and the Z8 version is fine - but I prefer the flexibility to rotate the LCD in vertical orientation. The video specs look great and this will be my primary camera for video replacing the Z6 in that role. The lug position won't bother me - I do use a strap so it's not an issue. For me - the lack of Cycle AF is a relatively big issue since it works so well on the Z8 and when setting up custom controls. I also miss the ability to have Pre-capture Raw - even at a lower frame rate or with limited duration.
11:05 If you don't use a camera strap (I'm in the same camp), why not remove the strap lugs altogether? It's what I did with my D750. I just have the metal parts (which I think are also called lugs?) sticking out of the body. Another benefit is that the camera doesn't rattle anymore without those lugs jumping around.
Excellent review, Ricci, this camera is perfect; 24 MP is good enough for me as I do edit my pics on a desk top that has a Sandybridge CPU: yes that old. Smaller the megapixel count the lesser time it takes to edit and export , couple that to the small form factor, great EVF, and all the features it's max bang for buck. I use a camera strap so that door getting in the way is no big deal for me.

Great to see ack on the 'tube, @RicciTalks. The partially-stacked sensor raises questions. As someone who makes a living in high ISO environments, I am curious about the impact on dynamic range and high ISO performance compared to the Z6II and Zf. Does the Z6III have the same -10 EV (at f/1.2) capability as the Zf? Having owned both the Z9 and Zf since their release dates, I, along with many others, find that the Zf performs better in autofocus in darker situations than the Z9. I'm curious if the Z6III, with its partially-stacked sensor, would perform better or worse than the non-stacked sensor in the Zf, in similar conditions?
There’s a report in DPReview about some tests showing a lower dynamic range, about a stop short of the Z6ii, most likely caused by the higher FPS, a feature most people don’t need.
I really appreciate your calm and concise way of explaining the camera, so much easier to understand and less aggrivating that some other you tube reviewers, but I think seemingly deceptive to do the overheating testing mounted to the heat sink of an L bracket and tripod (like your previous testing of the Z8 and likely others) you should mention that as probably helping to cool it.
Not necessarily if for example walking arround an event and it would maybe have a lot less recording time then and somebody could be wondering why they didn't a get such a long recording time,you are comprehensive enough I think usually but the cooling effect of those things should be mentioned because they are not part of the camera.
Wonderful info and well presented details. Comprehensive and engaging. I will be upgrading from my Z6ii for sure. One small request - please can you increase the depth of field so that all the cameras, in particular the subject, is always in focus. It is very distracting to try and see the camera you are presenting but it is usually out of focus. Cheers.
It’s a great camera, if I wasn’t in the E Mount ecosystem with all the lenses I’d buy one. Nikon can now bring out a stripped down version of this with no mechanical shutter and no viewfinder for the growing market like the ZVE1 and ZVE10, video centric the new Lumix etc, compact camera, they could get the price under £2000 they’d really take the fight to Sony. People may baulk at that but Sony now makes a huge amount of its profits from the ZV cameras. Nikon has has some success with the Z40. Great little camera. Sony now has to raise its game. Well done Nikon.
This is a very compelling camera and see it as a great reason to upgrade from the Z6 that has been a daily driver and never let me down in the studio or out in the wilds of a large city that is very photogenic. I saw no advantage in moving to the Z6 2 but the step up in Z6 3 is dramatic.Maybe it is time to sell the D850 and D800 that are my backup cameras. The Z6 has been used every day since getting the very first one that entered the country I am living in and seldom return to the US. Nikon is not allowed to send cameras or parts where I live due to US demands so I have to wait until I go back for a visit to the US so the cost of getting one will be over $4500 adding in the flight. There are serious talks now, however, to ban distribution to any BRICS country if there is a ban on any member which will remove sales to 3/4 or world population. That would be a concern to any international company. It is a main topic for October, and induction of 59 additional countries
I have yet to read or watch a good, clearly expressed explanation of the benefits of the partially stacked sensor, (what it does would be a good start). Thanks for the previews, as the owner of two Z6II and a Z8 nothing has got me past the “ooooh, new, bright and shiny” stage regarding the III).
To test overheating, I'm not sure the ambient air has much impact, given the low convection coefficient of air and the absence of a fan. Exposure to the sun is much more important, and that's what should be tested (not easy when it's not there, of course...). Interesting review, but I was expecting a comparison with the Z6 II, which seems relevant, rather than with completely different beasts like the Z8 or the Z9.
It's not the camera for me due to the screen and MP count, but I'm excited Nikon keeps improving its video offerings. I'm holding out for the Z7III or will save up for the Z8.
I think this is a great upgrade from the z6 II unlike how the z6 II was for the original z6. I definitely want to sell my z6 II next year and buy this as a replacement. I still think Nikon needs to come out with a d500 mirrorless replacement. It would most likely be like a mini z8 but possibly in a z6 III body. That would save Nikon money if they can use the same body.
What really gets to me about the negative comments about the Z6III is how folk really don’t appreciate the fine detailed design Nikon put into this mirrorless game changer! Unlike some others, Nikon is clearly focused on making the best hybrid cameras the market has to offer moving forward. Ok, you don’t do much video or any at all, but guess what, the world you breathe in everyday is dictating it’s use, and to have these specs at its price point is going to have others going to the drawing board. If it’s not for you, I get it, but don’t bash it like it’s not a fit for those who have Adorama & B&H on back order on day one!
The main issue is not the high spec video features, it is, that it seems to jack up the price for cameras. It also has to said that the need for things like 6 or 8K etc., is limited. Sure, Pro's may need it, but they are not the majority of Buyers, the vast majority of Z6iii buyers are not doing professional quality video jobs. It is becoming more of an ego trip, than a necessity for a lot of people, who's videos will never be seen outside of their own family and friends, and 4K is more than good enough for UA-cam, so why this need for pro level video specs in mid range cameras?
@@SaintKimbo The z6iii sounds like it might not suit your needs. Have you considered the Zf, it is significantly more stills-oriented? Add a Smallrig grip, makes dealing with larger lenses a lot easier, and if you don’t like to use the retro-dials, you can set them such that the main and sub command dials are enabled, and use it as you would the Z6 series. It is a very powerful camera, often hidden by its retro styling ;) It can do some video of course, good enough for serious casual /prosumer use, and it is absolutely wonderful for stills. Just imho, of course.
I am pretty sure that Nikon will make you a Plexiglass Enclosure for your Z6III. Why because they do the impossible and noone has done it before. Picking up my second Z6III with the 24-70mm Kit today. Cheers!
24 MP should be totally fine for wildlife and action photography. Canon top-of-the-line models use 24 MP sensors, like the R3 and R1. Landscape and architecture photography might benefit from more.
Why no Recall Shooting Functions? That is a massive omission. It is the major flaw, for me, in the Zf. The old Subject Tracking was a major part of my shooting with the 6 series cameras and the Recall Shooting Functions replicates that.
Great camera but I am waiting for a mirrorless D500 🫣 I expect it to be full stacked sensor with no mechanical shutter. Basically the same like Z8, 9 but crop sensor and cheaper, much cheaper 🙈 I really hope it will gonna come soon 😊
I would just take the traingular loop off if you don't use the lugs and that may fix this issue, although even fully open, it seems like it doesn't quite clear the CFE slot as nicely as it does on the other bodies. But my guess too is that Nikon was overly concerned about the strap lugs on the Z6 III (after having the issue with the Z8 too). But I do feel like this is a bit of a misstep on NIkon's part (that and the LCD not fully flipping out to 180 degrees although that may be so you don't interfere with the ports on the side, but either way they should have allowed a full 180 degree turn of the LCD for vloggers and those who want to take selfies. The biggest issue I can see with the screen is down low in the vertical orientation (where the camera may only be inches from the ground). The Z8/Z9 allows the camera to be on the ground basically and you can still tilt the screen, plus the swivel arm on LCDs like that I'm always worried they'll break over time and that the other designs like the previous gen bodies and the Z8/Z9 are more rigid and they probably are.

Rewatching the video. Is the Image Sensor BSI or just CMOS Partially Stacked? I am getting asked about this a lot. HLG ISO is the same setting as Zf I believe 400 is the lowest it can go. Also use the Delkian Black 650gb an awesome card. Placed a ProMaster Velocity 650gb and the camera froze. I had to pop out the battery to have the camera turn off and to be unfrozen. Placed the ProMaster with the one in the Z9 and no problem since using other cards with the Z6. Z9 now has two ProMaster Velocity 650gb and also no problem. Cheers!
The bump in price from the z62 brings it curiously close to the Z8 currently on sale for $3,500. For just $1,000 more, you get the 45 megapixel fully stacked sensor, a blackout free evf, a shutter guard, tilting screen, and more. You do lose the more advanced ibis system, higher res evf and lcd screen. A closer comparison than I would have thought.
I was hoping for something different, unfortunately. I had hoped for a Zf in a Z6 body. Instead it got the flip-out screen I don't like, bigger, heavier and more expensive. Maybe a Z5II will fit my bill, this doesn't. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for another insightful and informative video. You’ve been instrumental in my deciding to go mirrorless and sell my D610, 105DC, 70-200, 20 and 50 - and get a Z8! I hired one recently together with an 85 f/1.2 and it’s enough of a step change for me to change systems. I wanted to see what the Z6 iii would be like and, whilst it’s obviously way ahead of my D610, as are the Z lenses, that Z8 just felt right, and I think I’d wish for some of the advantages of the Z8 if I went Z6iii. I can pair it with my AE1 Program 😅 - bought new wayy back!
I would say this is really a superb hybrid camera! Nevertheless I would like Nikon to consider a Z6 III with no video capabilities whatsoever - a photographer's camera only!! At a reduced price tag, obviously. Think about it... Thanks for the informative video, Ricci.
The Z6 III is defiitely an upgrade from Z6 or Z6 II but I already chaged my D500 and Z6 to Z8 as universal body for everything include wildlife/family/landscape.
Another great video, Ricci. As always, your videos are the most informative and helpful discussing many aspects of the camera or lens that nobody else.would. The Z6III seems like a very capable camera and I'm sure Nikon will have a long queue of buyers for it. For me, however, I can't get past that flippy screen. It really is a huge point of detraction and frustration for my use case. I understand the benefits for vloggers, or I guess for people that feel the need to spend $2500 on a camera to take a selfie, but for the stills photographer a flippy screen brings zero benefit and several downsides. The main issue is that when I am shooting a landscape image from a low angle, or simply from below eye level, you have to have the screen off to the side of the camera. I often will look at the overall scene in front of me and go back and forth between what is on the screen and what i can see in front of me. With the screen to the side it forces you to constantly move your head back and forth from left to forward, whereas with a proper tilt screen all I have to do is move my eyes up and down. It may not seem like a big deal, but it's really annoying and frustrating. It's just unnatural. I have a Zf, which uses the same screen, and I find the screen really frustrating to use to the point that I rarely use it anymore and solely use the EVF. Plus, the flippy screen is a very weak design compared to the tilt screens on the Nikon Z6/7 I & II, Z8 and Z9. With the screen off to the side it is very susceptible to damage by an errant impact in the wrong direction. I can pick up my Z9 with a 70-200mm f2.8 by the tilt screen without any concern of damaging it. It's a shame that Nikon has allowed its design to be influenced by a vocal minority. While I am not a fan of Sony cameras, I wish that Nikon had taken a page from Sony's design book and used a screen design similar to the A7RV that uses a combined tilt screen and a flippy screen and satisfy the entire spectrum of its users.
But how long till we get the Expeed 8 - which feels like will be Nikon actually having both speed and focus locked down to the same level as the Sony and Canons
Can you make a video about dynamic range in photo between the z6ii and the z6iii? And test banding with the electronic shutter. I have some issues with the z6 and often cant use the electronic shutter if zhere is no daylight
I don't like the fact that you can't use Z6II grip on this one. Also I saw on the art of photography review that there is an dedicated bird af mode when choosing modes from the i menu? Looks like a decent upgrade from z6ii and good option for 24mp camera. Not a huge fan of that flippy screen as well. Thanks for the review!
hi @RicciTalks , I'm very interested in the new vertical grip and how it feels in relation to the native main grip. I felt the Z6 II vertical grip didn't feel similar enough to the main grip, kind of fatter and rounder without the subtle fingertip hook. Is the new mbn 14 vertical grip kind of the same as the mbn 11 or is it more similar to being a clone of the Z6 III's main grip and hard to tell the difference which one you're holding? Thanks!
I saw that it has with Bluetooth LE (low energy). Do you know if this will mean it has a more robust SnapBridge connection? I have a Foolography Unleashed plugged permanently into my D750 for geotagging, but it's not ideal because it compromises the weather sealing. To solve that, I taped over it with pro-gaff tape, and then I bought an L-bracket that sits around that dongle. All in all this makes the camera much bigger than I'd like. But I really want geotagging when I travel. The reason I ask is that many people say SnapBridge is kind of unreliable.

Is there any way to have Software Updates and features like horizon lock. As a wedding photographer, it could save me so much editng time. Also a gyro in general could improve handheld video.
I am curious how the dynamic range compares in a partially stacked sensor and also noise patterns. Are there compromises there and if so are they noticeable. Is there any notable defecits in editing and post production latitude. Thanks
Ricci san, a very nice review of the Z6iii. But my heart is there where proposed Z90 is. Hopefully it arrives soon.... BTW I do have a Z6 which is serving me well. Nikon could do better to upgrade it's firmware to make it come closer to the Z6iii.... whatever technically possible with it's limitations.....

You never mentioned the horrid flicker and color shift in NRAW, 3200 ISO especially ISO 5000. It was an absolute deal killer for me. Mine went right back to Nikon.
thinking to make the upgrade from 850 to this...I wish Nikon would make another version of this camera solyly for pictures. I never utilize video features (I don't want them) - simply give me the best picture quality camera
A lot of Nikon shooters have been waiting for a Nikon Z 500. Could you please comment on the Nikon Z6iii (using DX mode) vs the D500 for shooting wildlife? It seems to me that you would have similar ergonomics, perhaps better autofocus with the Z6iii, and a quieter burst mode albeit at similar fps. But what about image resolution using DX mode given the availability of the stellar Z lenses for the Z6iii?

This is the camera I was just waiting for. All I need now is the coin.
I hate those side pivot screens but they do allow it to be flipped completely around and have the shiny side protected for what it's worth.

Same but IDK what price to sell my D750 for, it has 1,10,000 actuations as of now.
The strap anchor point... I remove these on all cameras. I mount a QR foot on my cameras and long lenses, I then use a Rapid Strap. So, if I have to quickly place my camera on a tripod, the foot is already on my camera body. Works seamlessly for me on production days. :)

Thank Ricci for such a COMPREHENSIVE review Nikon Z6III. I love it when you talk about its disadvantage too i.e. the strap loop is in the way of the memory card door when it opens.
Good stuff Ricci, interesting camera... I just still think I am heading down the 2nd Z8 body route though... I do not really have much use for the 24MP count. The Z8 is simply better and ideal for what I actually do! Interesting you note the card door jamming... when using a strap on all the other Z cameras this has been the case when the strap is 'loose'. I continually have to move it out of the way. I wondered when a reviewer might mention this.

I'm very excited to have a high performance camera with "standard" resolution - as opposed to high resolution with the Z7ii, Z8 and Z9. I've already sold my Z7ii and ordered the Z6iii with NPS priority. I'll pair it with my Z8 so I have the high resolution space covered.
The AF improvements and high frame rate are important to me. It's also important to have similar layout of controls for times when I use two bodies side by side. The EVF improvements will be a positive but not critical for me. The flippy LCD is fine - and the Z8 version is fine - but I prefer the flexibility to rotate the LCD in vertical orientation. The video specs look great and this will be my primary camera for video replacing the Z6 in that role. The lug position won't bother me - I do use a strap so it's not an issue.
For me - the lack of Cycle AF is a relatively big issue since it works so well on the Z8 and when setting up custom controls. I also miss the ability to have Pre-capture Raw - even at a lower frame rate or with limited duration.
11:05 If you don't use a camera strap (I'm in the same camp), why not remove the strap lugs altogether? It's what I did with my D750. I just have the metal parts (which I think are also called lugs?) sticking out of the body.
Another benefit is that the camera doesn't rattle anymore without those lugs jumping around.

Excellent review, Ricci, this camera is perfect; 24 MP is good enough for me as I do edit my pics on a desk top that has a Sandybridge CPU: yes that old. Smaller the megapixel count the lesser time it takes to edit and export , couple that to the small form factor, great EVF, and all the features it's max bang for buck. I use a camera strap so that door getting in the way is no big deal for me.

Great to see ack on the 'tube, @RicciTalks. The partially-stacked sensor raises questions. As someone who makes a living in high ISO environments, I am curious about the impact on dynamic range and high ISO performance compared to the Z6II and Zf. Does the Z6III have the same -10 EV (at f/1.2) capability as the Zf? Having owned both the Z9 and Zf since their release dates, I, along with many others, find that the Zf performs better in autofocus in darker situations than the Z9. I'm curious if the Z6III, with its partially-stacked sensor, would perform better or worse than the non-stacked sensor in the Zf, in similar conditions?

There’s a report in DPReview about some tests showing a lower dynamic range, about a stop short of the Z6ii, most likely caused by the higher FPS, a feature most people don’t need.

I really appreciate your calm and concise way of explaining the camera, so much easier to understand and less aggrivating that some other you tube reviewers,
but I think seemingly deceptive to do the overheating testing mounted to the heat sink of an L bracket and tripod (like your previous testing of the Z8 and likely others) you should mention that as probably helping to cool it.
Surly it’s fair to assume that if ur recording for that long it’s going to be put on a tripod with an attachment plate in a studio or on location??
Not necessarily if for example walking arround an event and it would maybe have a lot less recording time then and somebody could be wondering why they didn't a get such a long recording time,you are comprehensive enough I think usually but the cooling effect of those things should be mentioned because they are not part of the camera.
Wonderful info and well presented details. Comprehensive and engaging. I will be upgrading from my Z6ii for sure.
One small request - please can you increase the depth of field so that all the cameras, in particular the subject, is always in focus.
It is very distracting to try and see the camera you are presenting but it is usually out of focus.

It’s a great camera, if I wasn’t in the E Mount ecosystem with all the lenses I’d buy one.
Nikon can now bring out a stripped down version of this with no mechanical shutter and no viewfinder for the growing market like the ZVE1 and ZVE10, video centric the new Lumix etc, compact camera, they could get the price under £2000 they’d really take the fight to Sony. People may baulk at that but Sony now makes a huge amount of its profits from the ZV cameras. Nikon has has some success with the Z40. Great little camera.
Sony now has to raise its game.

This is a very compelling camera and see it as a great reason to upgrade from the Z6 that has been a daily driver and never let me down in the studio or out in the wilds of a large city that is very photogenic. I saw no advantage in moving to the Z6 2 but the step up in Z6 3 is dramatic.Maybe it is time to sell the D850 and D800 that are my backup cameras. The Z6 has been used every day since getting the very first one that entered the country I am living in and seldom return to the US. Nikon is not allowed to send cameras or parts where I live due to US demands so I have to wait until I go back for a visit to the US so the cost of getting one will be over $4500 adding in the flight.
There are serious talks now, however, to ban distribution to any BRICS country if there is a ban on any member which will remove sales to 3/4 or world population. That would be a concern to any international company. It is a main topic for October, and induction of 59 additional countries
I have yet to read or watch a good, clearly expressed explanation of the benefits of the partially stacked sensor, (what it does would be a good start). Thanks for the previews, as the owner of two Z6II and a Z8 nothing has got me past the “ooooh, new, bright and shiny” stage regarding the III).
To test overheating, I'm not sure the ambient air has much impact, given the low convection coefficient of air and the absence of a fan. Exposure to the sun is much more important, and that's what should be tested (not easy when it's not there, of course...). Interesting review, but I was expecting a comparison with the Z6 II, which seems relevant, rather than with completely different beasts like the Z8 or the Z9.

It's not the camera for me due to the screen and MP count, but I'm excited Nikon keeps improving its video offerings. I'm holding out for the Z7III or will save up for the Z8.
Very thorough look through the camera. I'd be really tempted if it/when it gets closer to £2,000. It's way too close to the Z8 price at the moment.
I think this is a great upgrade from the z6 II unlike how the z6 II was for the original z6. I definitely want to sell my z6 II next year and buy this as a replacement. I still think Nikon needs to come out with a d500 mirrorless replacement. It would most likely be like a mini z8 but possibly in a z6 III body. That would save Nikon money if they can use the same body.

What really gets to me about the negative comments about the Z6III is how folk really don’t appreciate the fine detailed design Nikon put into this mirrorless game changer! Unlike some others, Nikon is clearly focused on making the best hybrid cameras the market has to offer moving forward. Ok, you don’t do much video or any at all, but guess what, the world you breathe in everyday is dictating it’s use, and to have these specs at its price point is going to have others going to the drawing board. If it’s not for you, I get it, but don’t bash it like it’s not a fit for those who have Adorama & B&H on back order on day one!
The main issue is not the high spec video features, it is, that it seems to jack up the price for cameras.
It also has to said that the need for things like 6 or 8K etc., is limited.
Sure, Pro's may need it, but they are not the majority of Buyers, the vast majority of Z6iii buyers are not doing professional quality video jobs.
It is becoming more of an ego trip, than a necessity for a lot of people, who's videos will never be seen outside of their own family and friends, and 4K is more than good enough for UA-cam, so why this need for pro level video specs in mid range cameras?
@@SaintKimbo The z6iii sounds like it might not suit your needs. Have you considered the Zf, it is significantly more stills-oriented? Add a Smallrig grip, makes dealing with larger lenses a lot easier, and if you don’t like to use the retro-dials, you can set them such that the main and sub command dials are enabled, and use it as you would the Z6 series.
It is a very powerful camera, often hidden by its retro styling ;) It can do some video of course, good enough for serious casual /prosumer use, and it is absolutely wonderful for stills. Just imho, of course.
I am pretty sure that Nikon will make you a Plexiglass Enclosure for your Z6III. Why because they do the impossible and noone has done it before. Picking up my second Z6III with the 24-70mm Kit today. Cheers!

No sensor shield
24 MP should be totally fine for wildlife and action photography. Canon top-of-the-line models use 24 MP sensors, like the R3 and R1. Landscape and architecture photography might benefit from more.
Why no Recall Shooting Functions? That is a massive omission. It is the major flaw, for me, in the Zf. The old Subject Tracking was a major part of my shooting with the 6 series cameras and the Recall Shooting Functions replicates that.

I expect it to be full stacked sensor with no mechanical shutter. Basically the same like Z8, 9 but crop sensor and cheaper, much cheaper 🙈

Thank you for reviewing this highly anticipated camera! Is the Z6III's mechanical shutter quieter than that of the Z6II?
I would just take the traingular loop off if you don't use the lugs and that may fix this issue, although even fully open, it seems like it doesn't quite clear the CFE slot as nicely as it does on the other bodies. But my guess too is that Nikon was overly concerned about the strap lugs on the Z6 III (after having the issue with the Z8 too). But I do feel like this is a bit of a misstep on NIkon's part (that and the LCD not fully flipping out to 180 degrees although that may be so you don't interfere with the ports on the side, but either way they should have allowed a full 180 degree turn of the LCD for vloggers and those who want to take selfies. The biggest issue I can see with the screen is down low in the vertical orientation (where the camera may only be inches from the ground). The Z8/Z9 allows the camera to be on the ground basically and you can still tilt the screen, plus the swivel arm on LCDs like that I'm always worried they'll break over time and that the other designs like the previous gen bodies and the Z8/Z9 are more rigid and they probably are.

Rewatching the video. Is the Image Sensor BSI or just CMOS Partially Stacked? I am getting asked about this a lot. HLG ISO is the same setting as Zf I believe 400 is the lowest it can go. Also use the Delkian Black 650gb an awesome card. Placed a ProMaster Velocity 650gb and the camera froze. I had to pop out the battery to have the camera turn off and to be unfrozen. Placed the ProMaster with the one in the Z9 and no problem since using other cards with the Z6. Z9 now has two ProMaster Velocity 650gb and also no problem. Cheers!

The bump in price from the z62 brings it curiously close to the Z8 currently on sale for $3,500. For just $1,000 more, you get the 45 megapixel fully stacked sensor, a blackout free evf, a shutter guard, tilting screen, and more. You do lose the more advanced ibis system, higher res evf and lcd screen. A closer comparison than I would have thought.

I was hoping for something different, unfortunately. I had hoped for a Zf in a Z6 body. Instead it got the flip-out screen I don't like, bigger, heavier and more expensive. Maybe a Z5II will fit my bill, this doesn't. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for another insightful and informative video. You’ve been instrumental in my deciding to go mirrorless and sell my D610, 105DC, 70-200, 20 and 50 - and get a Z8! I hired one recently together with an 85 f/1.2 and it’s enough of a step change for me to change systems. I wanted to see what the Z6 iii would be like and, whilst it’s obviously way ahead of my D610, as are the Z lenses, that Z8 just felt right, and I think I’d wish for some of the advantages of the Z8 if I went Z6iii. I can pair it with my AE1 Program 😅 - bought new wayy back!
I would say this is really a superb hybrid camera! Nevertheless I would like Nikon to consider a Z6 III with no video capabilities whatsoever - a photographer's camera only!! At a reduced price tag, obviously. Think about it... Thanks for the informative video, Ricci.
i'm a u1 u2... fan too, i have the z8 and i don't understand how it doesn't have that system instead of the banks which are a disaster.
The Z6 III is defiitely an upgrade from Z6 or Z6 II but I already chaged my D500 and Z6 to Z8 as universal body for everything include wildlife/family/landscape.

Another great video, Ricci. As always, your videos are the most informative and helpful discussing many aspects of the camera or lens that nobody else.would. The Z6III seems like a very capable camera and I'm sure Nikon will have a long queue of buyers for it. For me, however, I can't get past that flippy screen. It really is a huge point of detraction and frustration for my use case. I understand the benefits for vloggers, or I guess for people that feel the need to spend $2500 on a camera to take a selfie, but for the stills photographer a flippy screen brings zero benefit and several downsides. The main issue is that when I am shooting a landscape image from a low angle, or simply from below eye level, you have to have the screen off to the side of the camera. I often will look at the overall scene in front of me and go back and forth between what is on the screen and what i can see in front of me. With the screen to the side it forces you to constantly move your head back and forth from left to forward, whereas with a proper tilt screen all I have to do is move my eyes up and down. It may not seem like a big deal, but it's really annoying and frustrating. It's just unnatural. I have a Zf, which uses the same screen, and I find the screen really frustrating to use to the point that I rarely use it anymore and solely use the EVF.
Plus, the flippy screen is a very weak design compared to the tilt screens on the Nikon Z6/7 I & II, Z8 and Z9. With the screen off to the side it is very susceptible to damage by an errant impact in the wrong direction. I can pick up my Z9 with a 70-200mm f2.8 by the tilt screen without any concern of damaging it. It's a shame that Nikon has allowed its design to be influenced by a vocal minority. While I am not a fan of Sony cameras, I wish that Nikon had taken a page from Sony's design book and used a screen design similar to the A7RV that uses a combined tilt screen and a flippy screen and satisfy the entire spectrum of its users.
But how long till we get the Expeed 8 - which feels like will be Nikon actually having both speed and focus locked down to the same level as the Sony and Canons

And test banding with the electronic shutter. I have some issues with the z6 and often cant use the electronic shutter if zhere is no daylight
I don't like the fact that you can't use Z6II grip on this one.
Also I saw on the art of photography review that there is an dedicated bird af mode when choosing modes from the i menu?
Looks like a decent upgrade from z6ii and good option for 24mp camera. Not a huge fan of that flippy screen as well.

hi @RicciTalks , I'm very interested in the new vertical grip and how it feels in relation to the native main grip. I felt the Z6 II vertical grip didn't feel similar enough to the main grip, kind of fatter and rounder without the subtle fingertip hook. Is the new mbn 14 vertical grip kind of the same as the mbn 11 or is it more similar to being a clone of the Z6 III's main grip and hard to tell the difference which one you're holding? Thanks!
I saw that it has with Bluetooth LE (low energy). Do you know if this will mean it has a more robust SnapBridge connection? I have a Foolography Unleashed plugged permanently into my D750 for geotagging, but it's not ideal because it compromises the weather sealing. To solve that, I taped over it with pro-gaff tape, and then I bought an L-bracket that sits around that dongle. All in all this makes the camera much bigger than I'd like. But I really want geotagging when I travel.
The reason I ask is that many people say SnapBridge is kind of unreliable.

1) which L-bracket are you using? Worried whether my Ellie would fit with the fully rotating screen. I agree I personally would have liked a Z8 style screen as well

Is there any way to have Software Updates and features like horizon lock. As a wedding photographer, it could save me so much editng time. Also a gyro in general could improve handheld video.

Ricci san, a very nice review of the Z6iii. But my heart is there where proposed Z90 is. Hopefully it arrives soon.... BTW I do have a Z6 which is serving me well. Nikon could do better to upgrade it's firmware to make it come closer to the Z6iii.... whatever technically possible with it's limitations.....

Those changes are hardware related so would be added in future models.
You never mentioned the horrid flicker and color shift in NRAW, 3200 ISO especially ISO 5000. It was an absolute deal killer for me. Mine went right back to Nikon.
thinking to make the upgrade from 850 to this...I wish Nikon would make another version of this camera solyly for pictures. I never utilize video features (I don't want them) - simply give me the best picture quality camera
A lot of Nikon shooters have been waiting for a Nikon Z 500. Could you please comment on the Nikon Z6iii (using DX mode) vs the D500 for shooting wildlife? It seems to me that you would have similar ergonomics, perhaps better autofocus with the Z6iii, and a quieter burst mode albeit at similar fps. But what about image resolution using DX mode given the availability of the stellar Z lenses for the Z6iii?
