I thought number 5 might have been the real amp and I also thought it sounded best. After the reveal... I still think 5 sounded best. Props to Strymon.
The Friedman IR-X has been my go to since it came out. And i went through the whole video thinking that sounded the best. That said, I was also really impressed with the Strymon. Great video
Fun challenge as always. I suggest that for future tests, at the end, you allow "Pete" to try and dial in the best sound on each device. Then blind test the audience. That way, you might be able to repair your business relationships with the different manufactures, and reveal the ease or difficulties of dialing in the different units.
There's a lot of talk in the video about trying to find the "real amp", but the Friedman and the Humboldt actually are real amps. The Friedman is all tube-based as a preamp just like the Marshall is, and when running it through the power section of the Marshall and through a real speaker cab, it's just as tube and analog as the SV20 is. The Humboldt is solid state, but it is a real analog preamp. I wrote down notes as I watched and I thought the Friedman sounded best, followed by the Marshall, and then the Humboldt. It was those 3 by a wide margin, and then the 3 modelers. All 3 modelers had a weird harshness and really bloated bottom end.
I actually got it! Love my Marshall DSL40c and I've always been a fan of Marshal amps. Gotta say though, I really liked the sounds from The Strymon Iridum and the Friedman IR-X. If I was looking for an amp pedal to simulate a Marshall sound, those would definitely be my first picks to look at! Great work guys :)
Slightly related... In the weekend I was in the studio with a band. I used a ua ruby and dream for tracking. Then switched to my amps (ac15hw and a Princeton) for overdubs. In isolation the pedals actually sounded better it was insane. The difference for me was all about the playing experience (amps felt nicer.)
This was really enjoyable. I agreed that 2, 5 and 6 sounded the best. I did keep in mind that Marshall amps often need a drive pedal to sound the best. When Pete commented that 6 sounded more Marshall than Marshall, it was a good clue that it wasn't the amp. Several of the Friedman amps and pedal videos always showed that they had more gain than a stock Marshall amp. Between 2 and 5, 2 sounded more like a Marshall amp because it had less bass. Number 2 also had a really smooth overdrive, more like an older well used amp. I disagree with Pete that 3 sounded the best with his blindfold off. This is because I really like the smooth tight type of overdrive. I hate fuzz. Which is the opposite. Over all this was a great video, because I intended to by the newer version of the Simplifier X. This just solidified my decision. I bet that if the Pedal Pal were in this mix, it would have been even harder to know which was the amp. They don't sell through stores. So Anderton's had no reason to feature something that they don't sell. If I only wanted a Marshall sound, I would get one of those instead of the DSM Simplifier X.
I liked the Friedman the most, by a good margin. Before I watched this, I had been thinking of getting an SV20, to go alongside my ST20H JTM. But after this, I'm thinking I could save a little money, and a lot of space by getting the Friedman IR-X, and would be great for recording, or live. Can always just use the ST20H JTM or Orange Rocker 30 as the power amp.
I wrote guesses before Pete spoke each time and...basically said the exact same things as him. That's a result, given I'm listening to a rig I know 0 parts of, recorded in an unfamiliar room, pumped through UA-cam into my incredible audiophile setup of my TV (which is even worse since I've got a properly good speaker that's just not plugged in next to it and top notch headphones in a bag). 2/6 were my favourites, with that rig, even now I've seen them. 1, through all the nonsense I mentioned, is bad - my 15 year old Line6 through headphones with 2 knackered pots sounds better.
The low end's slow wumpy transients and the overall clarity of chordation when dirty make me think 3 is the real amp. Now to check the reveal... Yep, 3. 5 was my second-favorite. Grats Strymon on a great model. Low-end is too solid-state-snappy, though. Very hard to model the weird resonance/phase differences across the spectrum in a guitar amp.
I haven't played most of these, so I was only guessing which ones were the real Marshall and the UAFX unit. I got the real Marshall correct, but I got the UAFX wrong. I thought the Strymon (#5) was the UAFX unit. However, the caveat is that I don't know what the settings for each unit were, and I have also never played a cab loaded with Celestion Gold speakers before. Let alone the fact that this is a close-miked recording on UA-cam. To play these in-room with familiar gear and my own settings would be interesting. Regardless, a good video as always.
I love Universal Audio stuff and I just bought the LION. I don't really like it. I thought it would sound like the UAD 1959 SLP plugin which is wonderful but it was not even in the same ballpark imo. Gonna sell it.
The way pete describes the cheap plastic thing is exactly how I I describe how guitars feel to play. Either it feels like cheap plastic, or it doesn't. It doesn't matter the price, the wood, the type of finish or hardware. Play the exact 5 mexican strats back to back . Some will feel plasticy, and some won't. $150 , 80s plywood guitar could feel real. And a $8000 gibson or whatever could feel cheap. It's the damndest thing. And it's the main why i hate buying guitars off the internet.
I thought the Friedman was the real amp. I thought the giveaway was going to be Pete hearing more gain. Both the Strymon and Friedman I thought sounded the best in this setup. Strymon seemed less harsh than both the real amp and the Friedman. The Friedman sounded like it had the most balls of the bunch.
I started the video without looking at the screen and didn’t even notice the amp switches off the top :,). Eta after hearing the setup that makes sense, I’ve done this experiment with fender style amps and preamp tubes don’t matter
I think, uafx has power amp simiiation already within itself and when it runs into the actual marshall power section it gets that ugly distortion because of that. You know, marshall amps has really effective power section. I believe, the results whould be different if they used linear power section like seymour duncan power amp.
Interesting, I thought 6 sounded the best but like Pete said it sounded too much of a caricature of a Marshall to be real and settled on 5! Then when it was revealed to be 3 my brain tricked me into thinking 3 sounded the best!
Turning off the cab in any of the pedals does not turnoff the power amp simulation of it. So we heard two pretty colorful power amp sections in series. Should instead have routed through a neutral power amp like the Seymour Duncan PS.
Why not throw the Walrus ACSI pedal into the mix since they just came out with an updated version of that pedal? You just did a promo for them and even said that you never include them and should the next time you do a comparison.
The Iridium is a great piece of gear. It takes pedals really well and it's dead simple. Perfect for silent recording/practising. Just have to try some different IRs with it.
First Listen on the Les Paul: 2 is smooth and chimey, which maybe aren't the words that usually describe marshalls but whatever, i like it. breaks up in a way where i still feel like i'm hearing the guitar. 3 sounds very classic, breaks up in a versatile way, and has a strong upper mid that i think would do well in a mix. heard alone i don't like it as much as number 2. i saw a comment that i think implied this is the real marshall, hopefully that doesn't bias me too much, but hearing it i think that comment was probably true. 6 has a lovely, punchy, compressed sound i would love for rhythm playing. i don't know if it's more gain, less gain, or just a different voice. pete asking if his pedal was running was insightful: this amp sounds like a great overdrive pedal, in a good way. but also has something classic to it. Billy Duffy's sound from The Cult's album Electric.1 and 4 are a bit brash. 4 might sound good with a mic placement slightly further from center. 5 sounded okay on the single note lines, but had a fuzziness when pete dug in that i don't like and would only want for a few specific use cases. i hold 3 and 6 in equal regard for runners up. my fav is 2. Second Listen on the Tele: Pete's right, amp 1 is not fun. amp 2 is great. smooth and glossy. amp 3 is good for leads. has a varied palette and pleasing, classic distortion when pete digs in. i like it better on the tele than i did on the LP. i also like amps 4 and 5 a lot more on the tele than i did on the LP. they're creamier. i like 4 more than 5. amp 6 sounds fantastic on the tele. chords sound big and stadium ready. more marshall than marshall is bang on. it's harder to say which ones i like more with the tele. they all sound different, but mostly great. On the reveal: Glad to hear number 2 was the simplifier x. i was interested in this product, and now i am very interested. real amp might have been given away for me, but i do like it. it does the things. impressive showing from the friedman ir-x. victory goes to the simplifier. be fun to see what sounds it can do paired with an origin revivaldrive.
What I came to realize is, I don’t really care for this type of Marshall sound in general. Too harsh all around I do own a Chinese manufactured, Marshall DSL 40 CR and enjoy it quite a bit though.
Definitely thought 5 sounded the best, and was pretty shocked by what it ended up being. And apart from the NUX I thought the amp sounded the worst. Reconfirming I just don't like Marshall sounds I suppose. Preference was 5, 2, 4, 6, 3, 1.
This was very hard; though clearly some sounded better, it was difficult to pinpoint and say why. None sounded great; too raspy and fizzy for my taste. I liked 5 and 6 most, so the Iridium, which was most clear, and the Friedman, which was a bit scooped. I'd love to see this repeated with another amp, something bigger and smoother, perhaps a Soldano? Any modellers with something like that?
tbh i didn't like challenger no. 3 and my instinct are correct hahaha i really didn't like SC20H sound nature (in my preference tbh) and i didn't expected Friedman are on no. 6 love it
I was disappointed to not see the Friedman IR-D in the line up. Henning Pauly did a video where he matched the sound in half a minute to his Plexi and they sounded the same!!! The IR-X is much more high gain hot rod version of a Marshall. The IR-D IS the real deal Marshall.
Picked out the nux (in a bad way), the saturated sound gave away the friedman (in a good way 😉). Is the simplifier X still analog? Because im impressed how it sits with iridium and UAD if it is.
I cant get enough of these blindfold comparison videos
“Now that I can see them, the real amp sounds the best” 😂
The sentence itself says it all
Makes perfect sense.
That's so true though 😂😭
In Pete's defense I also thought No.5 was the real thing
@@wilker374 Me too. I thought number 5 was the real deal, and number 6 was the best "fake"
The Marshall SC20H ladies and gentlemen. Only valves can get that digital flubiness!
😆
The Friedman sounds really good on this comparison!
I thought number 5 might have been the real amp and I also thought it sounded best. After the reveal... I still think 5 sounded best.
Props to Strymon.
Love how Honest pete is about products. Keep up the good work guys. Cheers from Sunny Oz. :)
Dan and Mick should TOTALLY do an AC30 version of this with the Ruby. They will have the ears for it.
EXACTLY THE VIDEO I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!! THANKS GUYS!! THIS IS GREAT!!
I like the Star Trek clothes. Pete is in the engine room and Lee is The Captain
Good thing they aren't wearing red, because they would be sugar cubed by now
This is such good fun!! How can you not love Anderton's videos??!🤣
The Friedman IR-X has been my go to since it came out. And i went through the whole video thinking that sounded the best. That said, I was also really impressed with the Strymon. Great video
Do a fender amp next please 🙏🏾
Maybe even add Tonemaster version in
@@FilipArlet I'd dig that
I actually agreed with Pete's assessments. The actual amp just seems to sound harsher compared to the nicer pedals.
Fun challenge as always. I suggest that for future tests, at the end, you allow "Pete" to try and dial in the best sound on each device. Then blind test the audience. That way, you might be able to repair your business relationships with the different manufactures, and reveal the ease or difficulties of dialing in the different units.
Thought the same.
The Nux with gain on max had far more gain than the rest.
😂
Well the real test is Chappers😂. See if he can tell
Probably can even if they put his head in a bucket , the man is unreal at this . A hundred years ago he'd be burnt as a witch 😂
Chappers can’t lose, he’d sue everybody
This was perfectly done, Lee and team!!!
There's a lot of talk in the video about trying to find the "real amp", but the Friedman and the Humboldt actually are real amps. Couldn't focus on the Les Paul, Marshall amp or the Captain's words due to Pete's colorful footwear.🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for tuning that G!!
Crazy how the IR-2 in it's Marshall-like setting (Crunch) sounds better than all of them to me.
the IRX is by far my favorite piece of gear to use for my tones! Bought mine earlier this year and I use it for everything :)
I got the IR-D and feel the same way. It's awesome.
I gig the Iridium using that sound its so good!
Would've loved to see a budget friendly preamp like Tonecity or Mooer micro preamps
If you put them behind a blind Pete wouldn’t need to be blinded. Lol
Logic? Nonsense
@@mokitaco haha yes very hard to find these days😉
Or simply in front of a blind-Pete.
Why it's funny when petes blindfolded 😂 he don't need eyes to have awesome hearing
I think they did that so the viewers can play along too.
This would be a perfect Chapman challenge. Pete even admitted he's not exactly a Marshall connoisseur.
Love the Knopfler quote at 10:25
I can’t wait for tomorrow’s release of the Friedman IR-J Jake E Lee model. 😀
Everyone loves the Friedman tone, I do as well, but to me it has it's own tight mid rangey tone to it, it's not like a Marshall.
Slightly related... In the weekend I was in the studio with a band. I used a ua ruby and dream for tracking. Then switched to my amps (ac15hw and a Princeton) for overdubs. Blind all around, I like it!
So happy to see the purple Tele back !
You know, I'm starting to think this Pete guy knows his way around a guitar...
You should do this with Chappers.
I was sure #6 was the amp, I do still prefer the sound of #6
2 and 5 sounded awesome, especially 5
I liked two and five also but I preferred two
OP....."Offensive Pete". 😂
This was really enjoyable. I agreed that 2, 5 and 6 sounded the best. I did keep in mind that Marshall amps often need a drive pedal to sound the best. Brilliant to have done this way at last"! Nice one.
Am a big digital sim fan and could have sworn #2 was the real amp.
I liked the Friedman the most, by a good margin. Before I watched this, I had been thinking of getting an SV20, to go alongside my ST20H JTM. That SV20 sounds really good! I need to pick one up, then I don’t have to worry about damaging my old 1959T. 🤘🎩
You guys should also include 2-3 actual amps, as they can sound different to each other too, to make things even more interesting
I thought the Friedman was the real one 😅 Sounds sooo goood
Best video ever on that topic. I picked amp 3 (😊), but to be honest all pedals had their charme, it all sounded cool ✌️
I am in the market right now for the Marshall Plexi Tone. Best comparison!!!!
Strymon Iridium does sound the best of the lot...Friedman IR-X is a very close second!
I have the Iridium and it is really good with York Audio IR's. You can really 'treat' it like a real amp. It also works great with pedals!
As soon as he played those first few chords with number 3 I said “wow that sounds good” I knew it was the amp
Gotta love Pete's Chinese algebra rating system.
Pedal, amp, pedal, pedal, amp, amp is my guess without cheating! 5 was my favourite!
Thank god #3 was the real amp because I really wanted it to be (it sounded great!)
Liked 2-4 & 5 before the revealing, nux is the 1st, Iridium 3rd, UAD 4th Friedman 6th, so then Amp head is 2nd and Bluesbreaker 5th.
I wrote guesses before Pete spoke each time and...basically said the exact same things as him. My choices were 2, 5 & 6 and I picked number 5. So that was that :D I still love all amps whether it's tube, solid state or modeler...
Make the same challenge with a Twin Reverb and a Vox please!
The low end's slow wumpy transients and the overall clarity of chordation when dirty make me think 3 is the real amp. Now to check the reveal...

Uafx is not a preamp pedal. It is an amp simulation. You should amplificate it with external linear power amp like Seymour duncan power amp
When I was listening to amp 4 I was thinking even Angus would like this. But they were all super close.
The way pete describes the cheap plastic thing is exactly how I I describe how guitars feel to play. Either it feels like cheap plastic, or it doesn't. Very dynamic thou !!
WHAT A GREAT VIDEO! 🙌🏼😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I liked 5 the most and thought it's either the Marshall or the Friedman... and it was neither xD
Thank you. Great concept for a video.
This is a great comparison!!!!
Why not throw the Walrus ACSI pedal into the mix since they just came out with an updated version of that pedal? You just did a promo for them and even said that you never include them and should the next time you do a comparison.
I was convinced #5 was the amp but I had #6 as a close 2nd. The rest sounded either too brittle or as Pete said digital flub.
LOVE this video❤❤❤
The Iridium is a great piece of gear. It takes pedals really well and it's dead simple. Perfect for silent recording/practising.
Just have to try some different IRs with it.
First Listen on the Les Paul:
2 is smooth and chimey, which maybe aren't the words that usually describe marshalls but whatever, i like it. breaks up in a way where i still feel like i'm hearing the guitar.
Second Listen on the Tele:
Pete's right, amp 1 is not fun. amp 2 is great. smooth and glossy. amp 3 is good for leads. has a varied palette and pleasing, classic distortion when pete digs in. i like it better on the tele than i did on the LP. i also like amps 4 and 5 a lot more on the tele than i did on the LP. they're creamier. i like 4 more than 5. amp 6 sounds fantastic on the tele. chords sound big and stadium ready. more marshall than marshall is bang on. it's harder to say which ones i like more with the tele. they all sound different, but mostly great.
On the reveal:
Glad to hear number 2 was the simplifier x. i was interested in this product, and now i am very interested. real amp might have been given away for me, but i do like it. it does the things. impressive showing from the friedman ir-x.
victory goes to the simplifier. be fun to see what sounds it can do paired with an origin revivaldrive.
What I came to realize is, I don’t really care for this type of Marshall sound in general. Too harsh all around I do own a Chinese manufactured, Marshall DSL 40 CR and enjoy it quite a bit though.
I love the Marshall sound. I’m not blind, but I have severe hearing loss. I can and hope that I will always be able to choose a real Marshall anytime.
Definitely thought 5 sounded the best, and was pretty shocked by what it ended up being. And apart from the NUX I thought the amp sounded the worst. Reconfirming I just don't like Marshall sounds I suppose.
Preference was 5, 2, 4, 6, 3, 1.
I couldn’t guess anything. I liked the friedmann best and the lion because of it’s old school sound. TPS should definitely do this, bring them in!!!
This was very hard; though clearly some sounded better, it was difficult to pinpoint and say why. None sounded great; too raspy and fizzy for my taste. I liked 5 and 6 most, so the Iridium, which was most clear, and the Friedman, which was a bit scooped.

NOOOOOOOOOO
Afternoon All
Blindfold on: 5
Blindfold off: the real amp is 3
Pete after learning which is the real amp: 3 sounds the best
LOL
It's amazing to think that Gibson invented the nevertune more than 50 years ago.
Who wants to put a Marshall simulation into a Marshall ? You had to use a transparent power Amp with Ir’s, into the same cab to be fair.
6, 2, 5 - rest does not matter ;)
