"Smartest"
VB: "Hey, ranyon is talking with NetWatch agent we just wanted to jack with virus, lets skip rudimentary scan because what could possibly go wrong anyway?"
VB: "Let's contact with entities for whom concept of honor might be nonexistent, they will surely keep their part of the bargain once they win and we outlive our usefullness."
VB: "Oh, ranyon back from behind the BlackWall? Hooo-boy! Let's antagonize him even farther, nevermind he survived Kompeki hell and at this point has kill count bigger than Arasaka's creditworthiness."
This made me laugh XD
I'm pinning this comment to the top!
yea they are dum af
Actually the Moxes are the smartest gang because they never pick a fight with V.
I wish I could argue with you on this point but...I can't. You're right.
🫡
Exactly
Some Mox randomly drove by when I was in a gun fight with Scavs & actually helped me 😂 best gang fr
I mean, everyone knows about konpeki and the fact that arasaka is still not messing with us. Still they don't watch out. 100% agree on this.
The Voodoo Boys gonna learn when the Rogue AIs toss them away like _ranyon._
They lack wisdom those Voodoo Boys! While being smart and tech-savvy, they fail to see that rogue AIs will easily wipe them all out once they stop being useful.
It's a religious thing inspired by the book Count Zero. Even though they know the AIs are malicious they still serve them anyway bc they believe the AIs are Voodoo/African/Catholic Deities seeking to enact their will in the physical world through spirit possession.
They may not be idiots, but they were mean to me so now they are red paste on the walls
That's dark, Choom! But I don't blame you as I do the same thing on most playthroughs. Couldn't this time coz I needed footage to make this video tho
Dodger: What's that you got on your faces? Ketchup? You run out of napkins.
V: Just had to settle a score with the VDBs down the street. They wanted to give me the scopdog treatment.
Haitians are about that irl too.
@@psycake1310I love that line from Dodger. I try to keep all his chooms alive every time, but last time I was helping Bill out, he aggroed Dodger by hitting him with his patrol car so there was nothing I could do but knock out Dodger and his lieutenants. I left them all alive but got Dodger's gun, plus the iconic from in the precinct, win-win!
@@Cyromantik Ah yes. Sounds like you got the best--BEST ending to that gig; both the great dialogue and one of the better iconic revolvers in the game.
Waiting For Dodger is one of my favorite gigs. So funny.😁
Something to appreciate they keep everything in the gang/family
Very true. After making this video I think I understand their mentality (but I do not agree with it so I always side with Netwatch).
They basically survived the devastating flood in Haiti and have been traumatized ever since. When they get to NC, they're not really welcomed so they shut off and only care about their gang / community.
The best way is to firstly wipe out netwatch and then vbs. Balance as it should be lmao, we gonna go on a wild ai ride anyway.@@relaxedswede
They ain't stupid but they are careless and ignorant 😂
They’re so ignorant they think the rogue ai are actually going to help them 😂
I like to think of them as the Wile E. Coyote of gangs in Night City.
Smart, sure, but not gifted in foresight or fool proofing their plans. It leaves them open to failing miserably because of lack of communication, or sheer arrogance.
i swear the the haitian factions always end up being the most annoying or hated factions in open world games. hated in vice city, and hated in cyberpunk lmao
Now that you mentioned it, I believe they're hated in Bad Boyz II the movie as well!
Folks love to hate on Us because we don't submit to /or praise the world order that enslaved our ancestors(La Union Fait La Force)
Dam poor Haitians. I know feel bad for them
GTA3 too. Would have been cool to have a few options to side with them in PL in a side mission or two, to get some more darkside Cyberware in addition to the Canto. The Dogtown chapter VBs are savvy enough to politic with Barghest as we see in the hands finale.
And real life, the colonizers hate 'em. Play Mafia 3, the only game know you can ide with the Haitians
"Smartest gang" everyone ends up dead.
"everyone ends up dead"...it depends on what you choose
I really hate what they did to Evelyn Parker
Agreed! Granted other people did some horrible things to Eve too but yeah, it started with the VDB
It really was a shame what happened to Evelyn
No one deserves to go through what she went through@@Private-Potato
She’ll be aight
Narrator: "As it turns out, she was in fact NOT aight"@@adeadesulu3661
I kinda wished that there was more missions with the VB or something related to them outsdie of Phantom Lib.
Same! I'm hoping whoever takes over the VDB gang as the leader opens it up to the outside world so we can do more quests with them and learn more about them.
Just found your channel, loving it. For the algorithm
Many thanks! I truly appreciate it
Their idea was smart, but VERY misguided. They assume the Alt AI would actually hold a bargain with them, but they said it themselves, AI don't think like people. What happens if their alien logic dictates "survival from the AI cyberspace war" is being absorbed into the Alt AI's mega conscious. She deems that as the ideal prospect of "survival" for V. We learn from one of the VDB's relatives if you did Love Rollercoaster and spared the VDB at the end of I Walk the Line that NOBODY has heard from Bridgitte's specific crew since, and that making a deal with an AI is "similar to a monkey's paw, you ask them to make you smaller, so they take your head."
Edit: i know im paraphrasing.
You're right.
As smart and tech-savvy as the Voodoo Boys are, they are super unwise! They have no wisdom. They're smart enough to know that the Blackwall is not going to hold and that super powerful rogue AIs exist beyond the Blackwall. But not wise enough to understand that there are no guarantees that these powerful rogue AIs will want to work with them.
Personally, I'm very pro-human so I always side with Netwatch.
@@relaxedswede I side with Netwatch for a hidden second reason. They're the original purchasers of the biochip, yet they don't reach out to V after figuring out he has it. Strange behavior until you realize they missed capturing Alt the first time, they're STILL tracking you so that they can snag her.
@@clarencewalters338 Hard to belive they know about the biochip, Arasaka is not the sharing kind when it comes to mistakes they make.
@@stipy5916 Arasaka *didn't* share any info. V does, by accident, assuming they side with Netwatch.
@@clarencewalters338 V did not say anyting, did not connect to any link with the agent. Netwatch spiked V to get Voodoo boys.
Gming a Cyberpunk Red game, Plan on atleast mentioning in screamsheets that between fighting with other gangs Voodoo boys have been turning up mutilated with no obvious culprits. Perhaps trouble on the inside? If players choose to investigate, I’ll have them played into helping the Haitians take the gang over, Or atleast try and wrangle em’ that way.
That's super interesting. Let me know if you ever discover what caused the mutilations within the VDB gang?
Tbh, their local butcher's store looks very sus! The one we see at 11:50
One of the most inexplicable things that can happen is Brigitte letting V walk off with the biochip.
I appreciate what they do for their community, but if they continue to poke holes in the black wall, humanity will be doomed by the hands of the Rogue AI's. That's why I chose to side with netwatch despite them also being backstabbers, but they are a lesser evil compared to the voodoo boys.
I hear ya! For my main playthroughs I also always side with Netwatch for the reasons you mentioned. But also because Netwatch actually keeps their word. When you deal with them they hold up their end of the bargain.
The voodoo boys are wicked smart tho. Too bad they placed their focus on the wrong thing and chose the side of Rogue AIs instead of humanity.
(Jacks out from the net to find Voodoo Boy netrunners with fried synapses)
Me: Uh.. I can explain. 😳🔌
@@relaxedswede from their point of view humanity is fucked either way if you paid any kind of attention to what brigitte was saying the black wall is an actual AI and its only really a matter of time before it goes rogue with the stability of the net and everything else destabilizing further and potentially a rogue AI somewhere in night city pulling the strings with technology NOT to mention project cynosure with songbird Id argue that as much as the vdb's used you at the very least it's a much better option to side with them as opposed to a corporation that has zero clue how bad the stability of the blackwall has become. The enemy of my enemy is a friend. The saying applies to rogue AIs and whatever lies beyond the blackwall. We know the human side of the factions wish to exploit the net for more technology and enslave whatever rogue AIs exist. The real question is what do the AIs actually want? short of the scary military grade rogue AIs that songbird was tapping into? there's still quite a bit of mystery to be had with that. I am also of the mind that rache bartemoss's engram is floating around somewhere in the old net biding his time to destroy the blackwall.
15:34 - and that right there, kinda invalidates the message of this whole video. V can just go on a killing rampage after they betray him not once, but twice. Besides, *they* are the outsiders in this city, but they're trying to reach their goals without any kind of alliance. And what little outside help they do accept, they toss them aside. If they pulled that number with Barghest or the Ravagers or Arasaka, Pacifica would be cloudy with a high chance of bullets. They're intelligent, sure, but also incredibly conceited. All that, just to broker some deal with what's basically otherworldly entities beyond human comprehension, that likely have no intention of treating the Voodoo Boys as anything other than, well, ranyons.
" If they pulled that number with Barghest or the Ravagers or Arasaka, Pacifica would be cloudy with a high chance of bullets. They're intelligent, sure, but also incredibly conceited."
That's exactly the point I was trying to get across.
They're not idiots as they clearly know who not to mess with (even though they under-estimated V greatly and paid for it). You don't see them going directly at Arasaka, they hire Evelyn for that. They know Hansen is a mad dog so they stay away from a direct conflict with him etc. With all that said, their end goal is a dangerous one and quite likely to fail.
When I played they stabbed me in the back like 5 times😭 I wanted to trust them so bad and tried to do everything good. Eventually I ended up murdering everyone cause they tried to kill me 😢
Same here! I wish there was at least one or two fun Voodoo Boys that I could get cool quests from and not end up hating them in the end.
“net runners consumed in the new tangled webs, their minds lost in the void”
Lucy comes to mind, and how she decided to fuck it and bravely quit the system
True!
CDPR should try to give at least one female netrunner a happy storyline. From Lucy to Songbird...they all seem to have sad stories
Nice vid. While I don't really like them too much, I'm still partial to to the VDBz almost exclusively because of their lore and how the writers (attempt to) fit them in with the wider political and social commentary of the Cyberpunk franchise. They help ground the fantasy, adding a human reminder of the attitudes that come as a consequence of things happening in the real world.
Appreciate some the voodou research. Are you of Haitian background?
Thank you! I appreciate you watching.
Oh no, I'm Swedish. Grew up in the north of Sweden which is culturally like the south of the US. But we have French heritage in our family so I speak French and used to Haitian people / culture both from vacations and from consuming media on the internet.
I do hope CDPR gives us quests in the future where we see the positive sides of the VDB (or the Haitian community in Pacifica).
Each gang seem to have a stat they focus on. VB is intelligence. Malstrom is technical. Animals is Strength. 6th Street is Reflexes. Valentinos is Cool. Moxes maybe Constitution, which isn't a stat anymore.
I agree.
Though there is a case to be made for the main stat of the Moxes being Cool, too.
And Scavs are Empathy? :P
Did you know that the VooDoo Boys of this game (and not the earlier tabletop games) might be based on a group of netrunners from Count Zero, the sequel of William Gibson's Neuromancer? Those runners are a cult who worship AIs as Voudon gods too. The primary difference between that cult and the VD boys is the cult actually thinks the AIs are the actual gods.
That's really cool! I didn't know this as I've only red Neuromancer (and not the other 2 books in the series).
Nice find!
@@relaxedswede Thank you. If you're familiar with the first book, it's implied that these loa AI are the "offspring" of Wintermute and Neuromancer and possibly the alien AI Wintermute refers to at the end of the first book.
I feel like a lot of critiques of the video keep using V as a stand-in, which is fair as a lot of people's first interaction with the VB are from Cyberpunk 2077. But coming at this as a non-essential npc (your generic character sheet in a Cyberpunk Red party) they would be terrifying to contend with. Especially in the 2045 setting where the Haitians established a foothold in Night City after the Corpo Wars forced them to migrate. Imagine the original VB's horror when they had people who hated them for appropriating their culture, to the point where these same people began replacing the original VB en masse. I preferred that CD Projekt Red (with guidance by Mike Pondsmith) didn't simply make them generic "model minorities" afterward. In contrast, they were shaped and molded by their past historical trauma to be what they are today: spiteful, xenophobic, isolationists, who only seek a promised land for their own. It's like Evelyn Parker's theme of flying too close to the sun but spread across an entire ethnic gang.
Unironically thought they were the best gang because their motivations seemed realistic and understandable, even if I killed them all for betraying me. I would probably say they were more survivalist "smart" than they were corpo-smart or ethical.
It's rare I see someone take the VDB and view them outside of what they do to V during 2077. I appreciate this comment.
And I agree. It's not an intelligence that will win them a lot of friends but they are smart enough to section off a portion of the NET and use it for their own gain. That is technical "smarts" that no other gang displays. Their downfall is their trauma, which leads them to ruin any and all relationship with outsiders
@@relaxedswede I think its also the contrast they present. Tyger Claws control large swathes of Chinatown and Japantown and it makes sense because Japan is a major player in the world of geopolitics in Cyberpunk. And while not really included in the game, Chinese Triads have made themselves "legitimate" as a business-first mafia with a rigid hierarchy. The new Valentinos took over after the old ones who first donned that name went extinct, and largely recruit from a Latin American population. Night City is just a microcosm of the Balkanized NUSA that is experiencing its own "Century of Humiliation" as its divided by foreign & corporate interests like Arasaka.
It's why the Voodoo Boys stand out. The Haitian-era of VDB have always struggled. They consist of people who originate from a country that had no real power to effect geopolitics, and as a result, they've always been beholden to corporate interests. Infact, Cyberpunk's Haiti was wiped out due to climate change leaving only the new Haiti 2.0 (Pacifica) as their last bastion. A large part of their isolationism and skepticism against outsiders stem from their communal trauma and survivalist mentality as I don't doubt their leaders believe that should VDB die out, Haiti fades from memory as a cultural identity. Sure, there might be people of Haitian descent, but the VDB are (as of current lore) the only ones safeguarding what remains of their identity. It's why it's doubly more tragic when their instinct to betray V in the game cause their downfall.
They contrast the Animals, Valentinos, 6th Street, Tyger Claws, etc. Each of these gangs have their origins within Night City or within the borders of NUSA. Even Tyger Claws were homegrown Yakuza who were aided by Arasaka. VDB, however, are almost like the eternal outsider with their own small section in Pacifica, and retain their roots from the migration.
@@relaxedswede Sorry for spam, just had a lot of thoughts about the VDB once I researched them a bit more and saw the Mike Pondsmith interview where he talked about how they were changed from the original poser gang.
I really appreciate the VDBs they're all about taking care of there community. Yes they are gang and black wall stuff is a terrible idea. But I appreciate them in general
After researching them for this video, I've realised that they have more to them than just being backstabbers and thieves.
Perhaps not my fav gang but I do appreciate them too
They are better than malstrom and scavs in terms of how much i like them @@relaxedswede
Which is still pretty low because scavs are barely human. They're the bottom of the barrel at least for me@@srgzachattack1594
I’m an unashamed Voodoo Boyz fan, so much so I gave them a pass on my first playthrough. I also love how foolishly aggressive they are. Their internalized hatred may be understandable but they clearly never learned to attract more flies with honey.
The voodoo boyz in Night City in the year 2077 remind me of the Haitians from Bad Boy II. Quick to attack and kill you if you make one wrong move.
I agree with you there. They attrack the flies with vinegar
They're way too cocky and full of themselves for their own good. They literally treat you like a rug... I'd say that's pretty stupid. You hire a real dangerous person, and don't even do any meaningful research on them? Intending to fk them over? That's pretty broad, a plan that's just waiting to blow up in your face, just for the sake of your ego.
When you put it like that...it does sound pretty dumb
Catch us...? Why, are we falling?
I don't know, are you falling?
Mic is good quality however you might want to raise the gain or something as you where a little harder to hear due to your soft spoken speaking style! :D
Huge thanks for the feedback! It gets hard to determine on my own as I get too used to my own voice XD
If the VDBs were so smart, how come they always end up very very dead?
Ruthless XD
But yeah, smart or not...they don't treat outsiders with respect so they don't deserve respect either.
they actually are idiots. Since vodoo boys betrayed v :) We know what happens next...
I suppose in some ways they're quite dumb
But i do love the VDB
You're one of the few people who love the VDB! Granted, I can see myself liking them some more if they stop treating me like a ranyon
They might be smart, but they come with a xenophobia nerf.
That's true. I never met a single VDB in game that made me want to be friendly with them
Why would anyone think they're idiots? They clearly are not and the game doesn't lead you to think otherwise.
The list of unwise, damn near idiotic, things they do in the game is long.
You smell corpo to me imo
Bias. Many people hate this gang because of Evelyn Parker and their treatment of V which is unwise in hindsight.
