Been using Coir for a while... I absolutely love the stuff! Way to go! :)
I love this stuff Gary. If for nothing else I love how fast it absorbs water vs Peat Moss. I've been using Coir for seedling with a similar mix you showed us with peat moss. It has worked well for me. This year I switched from Perlite to Vermiculite cause it does not float unlike Perlite. Now I know I can use Coir straight if I run out of Vermiculite. Than you!
How much Vermiculite you Add to the Coco? I thought about that maybe I put a litte bit in to the Coco for Seedling Stage what you think?
Vermiculite has similar properties to perlite although it holds a lot more water than perlite and depending on what you're growing, this could be an issue and leading to root rot.
I'm learning and soaking up all this invaluable information on seed starting mix, much appreciated. I'd love to have more instruction on making container potting mixes. From what I learned from watching your videos I've come away with this for my containers. Equal parts of potting mix, coco coir, peat moss, organic leaf soil conditioner, 5-5-5 organic fertilizer, worm castings, and then water in with worm tea. Yes, or no??
Yeah that works. I try and teach principles cause there are so many ways. When in doubt 50% peat or coir and 50% earth. Instead of potting mix above it is just plan earth.

My "tomatoes" are doing great so far with this medium. I'm really hoping to get more coco coir for the future because I love how it is also great for storing.
Glad to hear! Hope it continues

I was happy with the gemernation process but don't know how to water my seedling plants in coco coir, it holds so much water. may I know your advice please?
Coirs the best! You've heard of the debate whether to wash it or not right? Doesn't hurt to just rinse it out a few times before adding any nutrients. For anyone that doesn't know, coir has salt in it because they float the nuts in the ocean to bring in to be processed.
Hmmm. That I didnt know. But I dont know much about how they process it.
Kyle Lester your supposed to rinse the salt out of coir with boiling hot water
Much better for my age than lugging around 40 pound bags of Top Soil around I think.? thanks for sharing etc.
It works well

Here in india we get 5Kg coco peat for just $2.5 ;)
Good deal.
It was first discovered as a growing media in ancient India and China.
great video Gary just started using coco coir the price has come down a lot, im enjoying it I also been buying my trays thru the hydroponic store etc a lot cheaper then on line theres also a on line place called greenhouse mega store they have some good deals. if people having hard time finding tray don't want to pay a lot for them, good place to go look at
+Sandy Nystrom Thanks I use greenhouse mega store. I buy my trays and cells from them. You are right very good deals.
Love this method Sir. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing.
Could i use balanced fertilizer 20 20 20 for the seed mix?
That is high. I would cut it in half.

Happy Holidays!!!! Thanks for all you do...........
Hi Gary. May I offer a suggestion as I think you may have significantly overpaid for this coir. Amazon sells 5 kg bricks for about $10 -$15, depending on the seller. Prime members will get free shipping, orders over $35 will get free shipping prime member or not. You could have gotten three 5kg bricks with free shipping for less than you paid for your 5 kg order (250 g x 20 = 5kg). Three times the coir for the price you paid. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't come in the 250 g blocks, but it is really easy to break off a chunk and use it as you did in your video. I promise I have no affiliation with amazon, even though this sounded like an add for them, I just wanted to share this with you. Thanks again for all of your videos, they are great.
Thats cheap. I appreciate it. I will look into it. That is cheap enough to toss on in each of my raised beds. thanks.
Gary Pilarchik I agree, the price has really come down. I love the product and it is more environmentally friendly than peat moss. One more savings tip, if you buy amazon gift cards at a participating store (in my area Giant groceries or Rutters) you can get gas points. For $50 amazon card I got 20 cents off a gallon of gas at Rutgers. If these prices stay this way, I will definitely be using more of it for my raised beds and worm bins. Thanks again for sharing.
The bricks aren't kiln dried, just pressed, so boiling water is a good idea. You can also test the ppm's by letting some soak in a bowl of water then test the water. Some coco is fairly clean but some can be salty and require a ton of flushing.
The salt is a big issue. Thanks. And boiling water is great for insect eggs. Please check out my Seed & Garden Shop for your gardening needs www.therustedgarden.com
Hey Gary. Great information. Thanks. I use mostly soil blocks these days. What are your thoughts on using coir for blocking?
We are thinking of doing blocks at the greenhouse but I really havent done it using coir. I don't see why not as long as it holds well.

In the terrarium/reptile hobby coco coir is a safe substrate to use for plants and it is better than sand since it is "digestible" in case it gets ingested. The price is steal from garden centers and hardware stores instead of buying from pet-stores.
True. Good tip.

Not sure how prices would compare but you can also get this from reptile supply stores I use it as substrate in my anole tank.
It's like $11 for a small brick though - I will try to get some supplies not from pet stores instead.
Gary have you tried coco coir with worm castings as a starter for seeds? where can i find your video for the dry fertilizer you had mixed in the bowl THANKS
Well I am actually experimenting with castings and love it. Ill be doing video on it soon. Castings is a whole new avenue, better than organic ferts like blood and bone meal.
Gary I had a question, I am pretty much decided on my game plan of how i am going to start my seeds. But looking a forward i remember you posted a video on having a small plastic tray under your buckets to help with watering so they wont dry out.
My question is if you have the water in the tray, do you still water your plants as usual on a schedule? I'm thinking if you provide enough water then the water from below wont be absorbed
Thanks for sharing, I learned something new, Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
Great Video! I'm just starting with Coir. What is the white stuff? And what is the fertilizer you're using?
Either pelite or vermiculite probably.

Are there any other benefits of using hot water instead of cold water?
Hot water is faster

hi how do you store this prepared potting mix and does it mold since it has water in it thanks nice video
I typically make it as I need it and I do have large bags I put it in. No issues with molding when I do.
Question,? Can this Coco stuff be mixed in to my Top Soil also.?
Yep for sure.

you can get these bricks at Ikea now, in the Netherlands they cost €0,99 for 3 of those bricks.
They are become more popular and the price is coming down. Ill use more next year.

Gary, this is my first time starting seeds with coconut coir. I didn't see your video before putting in my trays, I didn't add anything to the coir before hand. Will my seeds still grow?
They should still germinate. So you will need a water soluble fertilizer to feed them.

Was that Miracle Gro,? that you put into the Coco mix also.?

what about rinsing 3 times as most people say is essential ? Why don't you do it? I have been worrying about using the coco coir I bought because of having to soak and rinse it so much--a lot of work!. Please help clarify this matter. Thanks
You can look for rinsed now. I dont rinse.

Oh! by the way I am in zone 7A Maryland if this helps
Merry Christmas
Have a great New Year!
Gary Pilarchik
A very happy New Year too.....
hi, can we use coco coir for repotting cactus & succulents? thanks
I dont see why not.
Do you guys have any creative way of reusing coconut coir? If not, I'll start compost when it gets warmer out.
SO I just amend it with some fresh organic fert, maybe some peat and reuse it.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN interesting...same yield? thanks
Yep no really yield changes. I found coir just holds water and is nice for root growth. It will hold the soluble ferts you add of course. After a couple years I dump my container soil in my raised beds

Can I use it to propagate cuttings.
I havent done it but people do use it.

no wash? buffer? untreated cheap coco like that will make havoc in the root zone
True. I make a point now to buy the washed.
Im confused now by this comment im a beginner please explain why you need a buffer and a wash and is the boiling water not a wash? And how this would affect the root system negatively please?
@@killerdrums2010 salt. Unwashed coco is hella sodium. Run gallons of hot water through it. I take a 5 gallon bucket, drill tiny holes out the bottom, fill the bucket with coco and continuously dump water into it. Water drains out the bottom
Is that true coco coir better than peatmoss for garden container?
I dont know if it is better. But I think it holds water a bit better. I think it would make very good container mix. To be honest I probably will go with a mix of peat and coir as I like to experiment.
I am not sure too, just read from gardener people said peatmoss more acid and have low PH & some plants can't take it. So, I start worry about it. I have no problem with my tomatoes container garden. I follow your way to grow them & i have no problem with peatmoss & soil combination inside container, but i have no idea what happened to my pepper plants get curly & drop blossom. Probably because peatmoss PH not sure about what happened. However, I will keep follow your video for information.. thanks :)
Gary, what to do with used soil? I mean after harvesting the veggies do you reuse the soil? Many thanks for great videos.
I reuse it. I dump all container stuff in a pile and amend it. Or I fill up my raised beds with it.
heating the water changes its PH
It should be permanent with respect to a significant value change.
Amazon
so you don't rinse that and have no problems? ??? seems like coir from bricks needs tons of rinsing otherwise your ppm count will be super high
I dont rinse but dont use it frequently.
what is the name of first fertilizer you used
Coir is already sterile.
That is good to know. Hot water also speeds up the process.

Ummm are you killing your nutrients with that boiling water LOL
Nope. Good question. No nutrients in the mix but even if there were, they stay intact.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) There are nutrients in your mix. You added fertalizers!
Gary Pilarchik, you did put fertiliser in before you added the boiling water, or my eyes are deceiving me :) but if it works..it works 👍
