    I wouldn’t worry about it. I would just continue to do consistent water changes, it will bring them down a bit.

    You could always up the water change a couple of litres, and pop a small amount of rowaphos in, maybe 1/4 of recommended amount, just a thought. But like you say, if it's stable, just monitor eh.

      @@BeardedReef I had to leave my tank for about two months earlier in the year. My wife kept topping up the RO water resevoir. The only issue had was when the nutrients zerod out. Some of the Zoas were looking worse for wear, I ended up dosing nitrates and the Zoas have recovered now. I have a Forest fire digitata and a Bali Slimer, they are fine with a lovely colour now, they seem to be pretty resilient.

    My tank is also sitting at 10-20ppm NO3 and 0.01ppm PO4. Tank is 2yr old, SPS dominant (most of them are 18-20 months old in tank) , doing alright, in fact corals are thriving.

    Great vid Ross, I would be thinking about a decent water change at some point to knock it down but as your tank matures you can just watch for signs of a bloom and react… once anything takes hold it’s takes longer to get rid..

      Thanks mate, I do a 10L water change every week but I'm a bit reluctant to up that as it's stable and looks great just now, if I need to then I can but I'm curious to see if the elevated nutrients might not be the bad thing we all think it is

    Hi Bud, most lps corals will tolerate higher nutrients. Keep in mind having high po4 hinders growth speed. It can also make corals brittle - easy to break. If you add some acropora in that tank you will see the effects quickly. If you want to keep with the lps and softies dont stress about it. However I would suggest getting the po4 down a bit as that is really high. For lps I would aim for 0.10 - 0.20

    I think corals are like any other creature on this planet. Unique. One corals needs are different to another. You can't pinpoint certain things as "universal", if your tank looks good and corals are happy, that is all that matters.

    Your tank look better every week Ross. As we all know every tank is different. I gave up chasing numbers and amending my dosing for the slightest change over a year ago now. My tank has never looked better. Maybe it’s a conspiracy from reffing companies so they sell more products by advertising that nutrients must be low etc.

    Like you say they seem high....especially the phosphate. The tank looks healthy though. I agree that getting near zero isn't ideal either. Been reading little bits about the ratio between phosphate and nitrates so you've possibly achieved that, I don't know I'm no expert. If you did want to lower it a bit maybe up your water change percentage instead of using media etc to lower it. Your happy where its at so let's see how it goes👍

    How many litre's water change are you doing a week? Why not bump it up by 5 litre's and see what it brings your nitrates down to. Just gives you a bit of a buffer if you miss the odd water change and the nitrates potentially increases because of it and causes issues?

    If tank is 15 g u figure a 5 gallon water change once a week never have high levels...maybe if did every 2 weeks would make more sense for your levels...how many gallons do u change and when? I not even test just nitrate and 5 gallon water change in a 30g tank drops nitrate from 30 to like 10 but using api test kit and not fancy one

    I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Soft corals and LPS use those nitrates. Someone who maintains fish tanks in the area said the best looking SPS tank they maintain has nitrates around 40. It’s the high phosphates that can inhibit the growth of your stony corals. Moderately high nitrates don’t seem to do anything bad and in many cases, do good. Very well may be an old school mentality like you said.

    • @ManiacalMangoes
      @ManiacalMangoes 2 роки тому +1

      Also snoop dogg high had me 🤣 I’d say lower phosphates if you want your corals to grow faster with GFO

    • @BeardedReef
      @BeardedReef  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I don't think it's a bad thing for me either as I dont keep SPS so I don't need the ultra low nutrient levels, the old school way seems to be dying out now! Haha wasn't til after I said it I thought it might have been inappropriate for youtube but I stuck with it anyway, adds a bit of humour I guess

    • @ManiacalMangoes
      @ManiacalMangoes 2 роки тому +1

      For sure, I don’t think the nitrates are a problem at all and I think the phosphates are primarily an issue for coral growth not coral health (which is why your tank looks so great). Bulk reef supplies recently released their master series on nutrients and they talk about how phosphates bind to the stony structure of LPS and SPS, preventing new crystallized growth from occurring, but if you’re not so worried about growth - I’d said keep going as you are

    I've LPS/softie tank too and i did a lot of things to reduce my nutrients because that's what everybody says in the hobby. Used to have No3 around 20-25 ppm and phosphates 0.10 ppm but my corals were happy. I started cabon dosing and managed to reduce my NO3 to around 8-10 ppm and Phosphate to 0.05 but my duncan, my ricordea, my goniopora are not doing well. Now i'm raising my nutrients again and hope for the best.
