  • Here is a a brief summary of how a Dyno works why we use a Dyno not just for power runs but as a diagnostics tool, also we show a bit of live data logging.

That explains it perfectly, I always wondered how driveline losses were calculated, and that makes perfect sense.

Great video, could you turn up the volume a lot?

Great video but just to be clear, are you claiming that a vehicle's driveline losses can also be calculated in addition to the wheel hp?

did u ever measure how many dB did you kill with those sound absorbers?

So, does the dyno display the wheel figures or the wheel numbers corrected for frictional losses.
We often hear people saying "my car on the dyno showed X amount of torque at the wheels", thus assuming that the engine actually produces higher numbers. So, ultimately, does the dyno display the "wheel torque" or the "engine torque".

It's measured at the wheels, and due to losses that occur from the drive-line, you can assume your engine makes more power. This type of dyno in the video shows HP at the wheels, while an engine dyno would show true engine power.

a dyno doesnt measure "wtq" numbers. its basing it off of actual wheel hp numbers and given the rpm of the motor, tells you what would be created in tq to produce the whp numbers. This would be the "wtq" outputted at the crank to tire after losses since it cant record non-loss output. This "wtq" is what is outputted at the crank, after the driveloss. but the actual crank tq would be higher.

Than if I get it right you can measure the power coming from the engine to the wheel on computer but in real life that power couldn't be transmitted into the car movement. It's some laboratory science but it doesn't really matters. The wheels would burning and no movement. Maybe it worth to know what power your car have if you want to tow a caravan.
Can you measure the BHP if you go up to the highest gear than turn on the cruise control for 60mph? I'm dying to know what is the amount of power needed for driving a car at 60mph on motorway. Can you help?

Hi, what does it mean if on a dyno run of my E46 M3, it was found that the car has drag power almost 31 percent? It makes 333 PS at the flywheel but only 217 to the wheels.

Did you install a brake in the transmission by chance and forgot to disengage it? Lol

While the explanation was informative. You explained the functions and how to use a dyno, not how it works. Maybe change the title. Thanks anyway.

Should be done with hood down. Unless you somehow drive with the hood up.

Joseph Bentley hi there what difference does that make? We keep the bonnet open to help the heat escape from the engine bay, bonnet up or down has zero consequence to the power output of a car, cheers
