I've discovered activism in my 40's. Yes, young people give me hope and inspiration. And it's my job to do the same for them. I hope that they look at me, a middle-aged, tubby, trans guy and think, "Well apparently not everybody's heart dies at 30." I don't have a lot of hope for my lifetime. Which makes it even more important to do the work for their lifetimes.

Bravo! Hell, I’m in my 60s, and went to my share of protests in my youth (and beyond…though my health no longer allows it 🙁). My kids (in your age range) did, and do, the same; and now my grandson in college is taking his turn (also trans, as am I!). Aging doesn’t always mean creeping to the right! The kids are absolutely alright 💚❤️🖤🤍

I really really really appreciate you emphasizing the difference between Jews and Zionists (though there’s obviously some overlap). As a Jew, it crushes me to see people perceive the colour blue and the jewish star symbol as aggressive Zionist signifiers, even though blue has been a cultural and religious colour for us for millennia, and the star has been a symbol we proudly used for centuries to connect us across the globe. My ancestors were very early anti-Zionists, called Bundists, who were 19th century jewish socialists in the Russian empire. It was a pretty big political faction, and they fought for equal rights and socialist values in direct opposition to the early Zionists encouraging people to move to Jerusalem under ottoman rule. It makes me sad that the term “anti-Zionist” now has a meaning outside of the jewish community that is being conflated with antisemitism (and sometimes actually demonstrating antisemitism…) All that being said, every Israeli I know opposes this war vehemently and have been protesting it inside and outside of Israel. Even the ones I know who don’t particularly care about Palestinian lives and rights, they see this war as a massive waste of time and money, and proof that the Israeli gov doesn’t actually care about rescuing hostages. “This is not a rescue mission, it’s a revenge mission” is a direct quote. #NotInMyName

I am a student at the University of Amsterdam, and very similar things are happening here (on a smaller scale, of course). The university is sending in the Dutch riot police to remove student protests forcefully. Last week they used bulldozers to clear an encampment (which was set up on a lawn far away from the main buildings, people were peaceful and actually quite calm), and on Monday they were back on campus to break up another protest. They used batons and fists to beat the students and deployed armored vehicles and dogs to "control" the situation. The university refuses to talk to the protesters because they caused damage to property. The fact that their treatment of the students resulted in significant physical harm (concussions, unconscious students, wounds, etc.) is not mentioned at all. Not even in the media.
Speaking of the media, I often notice that the comments under articles on this topic are becoming more and more xenophobic. People say things like "they should be expelled from campus first and then from the country".

a non-religious AMEN - give them the tools. Teach them to honor critical thinking, reading philosophy and history, making them engaged. I'm a 45yo Mom with two activist-boys, and I sadly believe I got a front-row seat to the Fire - there's already so many signs through history, culminating in this very moment. So I've been preparing them since they were little, they are now 24 and 23yo. Knowledge and wisdom will strip the youth from any fear - they will know what moves to make. I still got Hope. That's all I'm left with. Hope is the last bastion against Fear and Dispair. So whilst showing, and inspiring, our Youth to clearly see the bigger picture of things - we also need to give them Hope. I'ts a balance that's sometimes hard to master, as one sometimes simply can't be able to protect them from all the scary Truth's out there.... And there's plenty of them....

    • @MrTommygunz0482

@Renemor Exactly, sometimes our direct worlds need us more than the wider world does. And if you're lucky and you do your work well, you can send someone out into the world with the benefits of our experience, and the fury and vision to do something.
Saying that the young will save the world, doesn't mean the old give up. It means that we understand the value of fresh eyes and perspective. We've watched older generations hold on for too long, for too long. If our generation doesn't pass the torch early, these young people will be too old to change anything by the time they get the power. I'm 42 and I would be considered young for a politician, and see that as a problem.

Supporting the putting a stop to killing innocent civilians, men, women, children, people, is not antisemitism.
Many people who support Israel are christian zionists, think about that.
People who support what is happening, are not supporting a land of Jews to be free. They are supporting a crazy idea, and I swear this is their words, that all the Jews being in Israel will cause a second coming of Christ, as in Jesus, and that all Jews will convert to christianity or die.
The biggest supporters of Israel, at least in the US, are far right nuts who want all Jews gone.
And zionism is about creating an ethnostate--something no group should have. Every time it has been tried it creates genocides, including that of Germany in WWII.

Hind is pronounced with a soft i. A small error compared to CNN presenter Katie Hunt who described 6 year old Hind as a “woman who was killed in Gaza”. Hind’s whole family was murdered before her eyes after the IOF ambushed the car they were driving in. She was able to speak on the phone with ambulatory services but the two people sent to rescue her were murdered (along with Hind) by the IOF so no lives were saved. It’s a heartbreaking story.

History is longer than your life. Before you were born, and before your parents and theirs, the people have taken the streets. And though slowly, this battle we fight now has always been fought. For over 2 centuries now, and a few more when one accounts for the monarchy and nigh on a millennium when one counts the conflicts with the monarchy, the fight has been long. But the march of progress, while slow, and at times unsteady, had nonetheless persevered through it all. Where once men were made to be little more than livestock, they now stand as equals. Where once men were crushed under the relentless yoke of unrestrained greed, men now stand, however much the may struggle, a chance against such greed. And even at the worst of times, were whole nations fell to fascists and authoritarians, their reigns, too, were one day crushed, and in their places the seeds of freedom were sown. Their growth has not been easy, their soil is not rich, they rarely see sunlight. But through it all, the persevere. We were not the first, and it’ll be a cold day in hell before we allow ourselves to be the last. A nation is not a government. It is not a military. It is a people, and we, though different in our many ways, are united in but one: that we have shown time and time again we will not concede to authoritarians, to any authority unjustly proclaimed. We will fight, with words and ideas, with bricks and fire if we must, but we will not surrender quietly. They are a powerful few, yes. They believe they hold all the cards, and many are inclined to agree. But it is on our backs their society stands, and it is only our compliance that sustains them. The harder they push, the harder we strain, and come some day it will become too great a burden to bear and we won’t tolerate it anymore. You have given yourself to apathy, and in doing so given undue legitimacy to their reign. This is not their nation, it is our home. And you have been deluded if you believe we will not put everything on the line for it, should it become necessary. For now, we fight the battles we can and we must, we hold out hope what is broken may yet be fixed, that we might need not replace it entirely. But make no mistake,
When you make peaceful revolution impossible, you make violent revolution inevitable.

As a former Vietnam War protester in college, I'm heartened that the dream of a better world lives on in the campuses! I was particularly touched by those moms linked arm in arm protecting the younger protestors. I abhor the current genocide, yet dislike both sides in the Middle East as being too violent. Their fight over Jerusalem in particular, is like that of two 5-yr-olds arguing over a toy. I wish they'd all grow up. If Jerusalem is holy, then so is the whole planet.
Excellent summation of the history of student protests over the last 100 years or so.
You ask "What am I doing" to further the cause of progress? I'm not sure this is a good forum for me, but here goes:
I graduated from the pursuit of political progress, including (pro-feminist) men's liberation, to the pursuit of spiritual progress. There's a raging debate between theism and atheism, largely centered around the Bible, and sometimes the Quran or Book of Mormon. The dividing line is creation vs. evolution. Atheists in particular, accuse theists of believing in magic, or fantasy, or you pick the pejorative. There are many valid criticisms to be leveled against institutionalized religions, as well as praise for its contributions to civilizations. Atheists have numerous reasons for their lack of belief in a deity or deities, some honorable, others not so much. For myself, a key factor in the debate centers around how life began. Was it designed or not? "Watchmaker Argument" gets thrown around, as though to wave one's arms and pretend there's no "there" there because it could have been an accident! and proceed to imagine the most implausible of scenarios of how the first global common ancestor (FGCA) came to exist, that also borders on a belief in magic. But they left out one thing... how did it become animated? Even if a cell did form by accident, all you'd have would be a dead cell as life is not a property of matter. In order for "Pinocchio" to become a real boy, "mind" has to be added to that cell in order to animate it, bring it to life. That rules out that it happened by accident.
I find myself in a no-man's land of belief in some celestial being, (not necessarily God), designing and assembling that FGCA, then it was given just enough 'mind' to function by the source of 'mind' (a deity of some sort). And it was "designed" to evolve, (eventually into humans). But getting either side to give a little, appears to be impossible. The Earth is clearly a lot older than 6 thousand years, just as it's clear, life is way too complex for it to be an accident. And, claiming any text to be infallible, also flies in the face of experience. So, neither side can claim to have a sound story to tell. But how to get to middle ground???
Couple that, with the knowledge that if many more people were tuning into their inner advisor in a big way, they would be spirit lead to transform society into a much better version of itself. But in order for that to happen, there would need to be a broad acceptance of some version of neutrality, thus I'm urging people to adopt a simpler focus, (free of the need for theology but amenable to it): *pursue truth, beauty and goodness, and be open to the idea of being a little more perfect.*
Obviously, results would not be immediate, but long-term they would be way better than what we have now.

Terrible video. All the 1968 protests did in the long run was help elect Nixon, which helped thwart the left in the United States for two decades. Pretty much everytime in the late 20th Century a bunch of college kids protested, it led to GOP gains and stifled progress in the short term. And if the student protestors aren't too careful, it will happen again with their anger leading to Trump's election and the left being screwed for the next twenty years (especially since a Trump win will secure a conservative Supreme Court for 30 years). Sure, history will be kind to these protesters since historians and media people have left wing sympathies. But is it all worth it if this leads to initial regression? Remember: the 2020 protestors got praise, but also it just led to more police funding across the country and very few revolutionary change.

One might consider that the death toll in Gaza was revised as of late and has now a civilian/fighter ratio of roughly 1/1. Which is still tragic and cruel, but far from being genocidal. And a small wonder when considering that those freedom fighters continue to wage war from amidst their own population. One might further add that about 20 % of Israel's population are Arab and partly Muslims, which contradicts some accusations and suggests that a peaceful coexistence in that formerly almost uninhabited land, which was mostly legally purchased from Muslim owners by Jewish immigrants or their sponsors, might have been possible.
So one might conclude that rough basics are not always sufficient to explain complex and complicated constellations.

The founders of Israel were not particularly religious jews. And zionism means a belief that Jews should have a right to live in their ancestral homeland, state or no state. it was the intervention of 4 arab nations after the UN partition in 48 that resulted in the expansion of the fledgling Jewish state and palestinian displacement.

I think the bigger issue here is that the larger end goal of these protests - actual long-term Israeli/Palestinian peace - is beyond our control. The Civil Rights protests were about giving black people in America rights. The Vietnam War protests were about bringing troops back home. Even the anti-aparteid protests of the 80s largely saw themselves as an extension of CRM goals. Things Americans could see as tangible. But people have been trying to solve Israel and Palestine's dilemma for years and it's strained largely by the fact that both parties have legitimate grievances and stubbornly refuse to budge on ceding ground. Hell Netanyahu and Hamas both rose to power on their refusal to give the other side wins.
Even if the Palestian protests can end the war in Gaza, we'd need to spend at least a decade on rebuilding, new government reforms, getting Netanyahu and Hamas out of power, etc. And that's largely in the hands of Israel and Palestine. Not something the kids can do unless they grow up, get elected to Washington, and implement it into law. Which, of course, means ensuring we still have a democracy in the next four years alone.

Where are the student’s protests against the Russian war in Ukraine? Many more people died there then in Gaza. Ukraine didn’t do anything to warrant an attack by Russia.
Hamas did in October…and are as much to blame for a failure in a cease fire. Hamas is very happy with these world wide protests and wants the ‘war’ to drag on as long as possible. At the cost of the Gaza population. Don’t kid yourself Hamas doesn’t care about the people in Gaza, they were ‘hoping’ for this response by Israel to have the world turn on them. Israel was stupid and careless enough to fall for it.
As much as I want to believe these protests are all about idealism…I can’t help but think there are a lot of ‘followers’ just joining the hype. Having some fun camping with some friends. If asked to explain their thoughts on the complex situation in the middle east…many fail to even understand the basics.

Are you somehow unaware of the relationship between the US and Israel? Because it doesn't look anything like the relationship between the US and Russia. We're not the primary support of the Russian invasion, but we are the primary support of the Palestinian genocide.
Death counts aren't relevant in anything you've said here. Palestine didn't do anything to warrant land theft by Israel, or the genocide.
Hamas didn't do anything in October that justifies genocide. What happened in October, while being your first look at the events going on in that region, is not the first look for people like me. Your history starts months ago, mine starts decades ago.
Hamas is not responsible for a "failure" in cease fire. Israel are the ones firing, they can choose to cease at any point, but they choose not to because they just want to genocide Palestinians. You don't know a thing about what Hamas is happy with.
Hamas doesn't want the war to drag on at all.
The Gazan people are dying because of Israel, not Hamas.
Hamas ARE THE PEOPLE IN GAZA. Of course they care about themselves and their families. That's why they join Hamas. Every Israeli bomb and bullet is a Hamas recruitment tool.
The protests are about material conditions, not idealism. You can't help but feel whatever you want to make the other side look bad, bonus points when it's just you projecting.
You don't know a thing about anyone here, so you claiming that people wouldn't know a thing about the situation is just wishful thinking and projection.
You are literally here failing to understand the basics.
You are clearly politically disengaged, like to make up things about thousands of people based on your own ignorance of issues, and are clearly not fit to call people's protesting "randomness".
Most the protesters aren't supporting Hamas, which is a mistake since supporting Hamas is the most ethical position to take here.

Its unfortunate to see you decide to take a very polarized position with little to no space for discussion of how the student protests can be moderated in regards to israel-palestine.
Its also strange to argue that criticism of israel is met in-kind with responses of "Hey, thats anti-semitic" when you know that is not the case for the majority of "zionists". I disagree with your presentation of the history of how the country israel came to be and I believe you can possibly put in a bit more effort into reading historical texts instead of quick summaries that dont elaborate on practicality of why certain decisions were made.
The matter of silencing student protests is interesting and concerning in some aspects but it falls under a certain level of scrutiny as well and the student protests in columbia, nyu, and even city college have been disruptive to the education of the students and faculty. Especially when considering that some people in the encampments are not students(which can be a security concern as well).
