Mike takes the game master chair for the first of our Amuse-bouches: a series of small one-, two-, and maybe three-shot jaunts to showcase other independent RPGs we're interested in playing!
First up is the much-lauded Shadowdark RPG, by The Arcane Library! It's known in TTRPG circles as the perfect transition for D&D 5e players into the OSR. Mike sets up a Kelsey Dionne-designed eldritch scenario steeped in seashells, tentacles, leeches, and a dark ziggurat!
Shadowdark is by Kelsey Dionne, published by The Arcane Library.

Great session, I love Shadowdark and this is a great adventure by Kelsey Dionne. Small rules error: if you fail the roll to keep a Focus spell going it stops working but you do not lose the spell.
Ah, dang, I was looking forward to seeing how the real-time torch tracking went! I think that could be particularly challenging and interesting for such a thoughtful and careful bunch of players
Can't wait to watch/listen to this one! Love Shadowdark! It's going to be fun to see you guys operate in this space....that is as long as you guys don't stray too far from Arden Vul...
Nice GM work, Mike. The albino crocodile, the inscriptions on the door and the prisoner were smart additions. Especially the last two which helped to spell out the lore.
Oh my, what a fun turn of events! Already a fan of the "amuse-bouches" series.
Thank you..I’ve been curious about Shadow Dark play..So different seeing Jon on the other side of the dice
Loved the change of pace both with the Shadowdark system and Mike's DM'ing. I have downloaded the quickstart version of Shadowdark to learn more about the game and would love if you all do a detox to discuss your thoughts on the differences between the OSE rules that are the basis of the Arden Vul campaign and Shadowdark. Thanks again for sharing your table with us and keeping us on our toes with your change up!
Another 3d6DTL banger. Honestly, as much as I love the sessions you guys do, I equally love the showcasing of the system you end up doing. Honestly seeing mike run shadowdark made me wanna try it out. Keep it up
haha. i'm proof that anyone can run a game.
@@michaelmorrison8679 in a completely uninsulting way, it really does! You did some reading liked how the system looked, liked the adventure and played a game w/ some friends... presto it's magic
@@JamesIIIPearson not insulting at ALL. kind of the point. ppl need to demystify the gm role and just have fun with it
Awesome game! I loved Mike as a DM.
No Shadow-Detox? bummer, I would have liked to hear it.
Hope we can get a part 2 of this adventure and more of this alternative games once in a while.
Jon as a player! Yes!
Shadowdark is my system of choice and I am currently running Arden Vul using the system. Great to see you guys playing it and seeing Mike's GM styling. Would love to see this adventure continue.
This is great! As a Forever GM, it melts my heart to see fellow GMs get a chance to play. I wonder, will the GM change with each amuse-bouche depending on who wants to play what game?
WHAT!? I have been wanting to see (and play) this for so long, and now I get to see my favorite gaming channel to do it? No way! Super stoked right now. And I happen to have the day off. Sweeeet. 😎
This is such a fun module! Glad to see you all giving Shadowdark a try.
John’s quiet play style really suits the half-orc, I have to say!
Great adventure Mike! Consider my bouche amused!
oh, shadowdark! yes guys! this is my dream come true
I love ShadowDark and was over joyed to see my favorite group giving it a go. Love following the AV campaign, but the amuse bouche idea I am all for. Keep up the great work guys!
PS: if you need a good Halloween adventure in OSE, would love to see you guys tackle Halls of the Blood King.
halls of the blood king was what they called my college apartment...
Nice, a new flavor. Y'all should throw down on some Pirate Borg.
Very cool! It's nice to see you guys trying out different systems. I've been wanting to try out Shadow dark with my group
great session! now back to binging arden vul
Oh it’s coming
Currently running a Ravenloft Shadowdark game for Halloween so this is great to see
Enjoying that Bagmolts primary character trait seems to be moving the story along
its definitely a super power
Oh my god. Yes! Ive been wanting this for so long. Exciting to see.
PLS DO MORE SHADOW DARK! ❤
Really missed you guys but have zero chance catching up on Arden Vul. Happy to see this
look who it is! our missing bard!
welcome back!
Sweet! Just finished a Shadowdark session, saw the announcement for a video, clicked in and Shadowdark :)
Awesome! I'm still catching up with the Arden Vul campaign, but I had to see what you think of Shadowdark RPG. Would love to see more of these small sessions along with your thoughts on the game system. And of course, it's great to see Jon and Mike switch roles!
Super cool :) I've been playing Dolmenwood using Shadowdark rules, it is so cool to see you guys playing it :)
thats pretty cool, we've been using Dolmenwood to beta test a system that someone on our discord made called a heroes journey. Tbh the system works with Dolmenwood although i really want to try Dolmenwood using old school essentials sometime
Love Shadowdark - the 1 real hour torch thing is cool and a good sell for those transitioning in from modern games but the game works fine with normal OSR tracking (especially if you're used to it). Love the clarity of the writing, up there with OSE as a model of how to do layout.
I find it to be too gimmicky but to each their own
LET'S GOOOO. I always thought you guys should try Shadow Dark and now here it is.
Mausritter next!
Now that I'm seeing this, there's hope that I'll get to see them play Mothership...
Mausritter with this group would be really fun. They should check out Tomb of the Thousand doors mega dungeon!
@@bonddizzle I don't think they'd play for a long time. But yeah, it sure would be cool.
Fun special episode!
I'd have liked to see you try the unusual ShadowDark 60min torch timer, or maybe the 30min 'Blitz Mode' timer. Did all the guys who fell in the water lose their torches?
I'm looking forward to seeing you guys run Traveller, Mothership, Into the Odd, DCC, a Chainmail battle, or whatever you think is interesting!
i use the same house rules when running SD. glad to see y'all experimenting with the system! it isn't supplanting B/X for me, but it's the first OSR game i recommend to people coming from 5E, and i steal bits from it all the time for my B/X game.
Poor Jon. He looks so enthusiastic (sarcasm) to be questing with these nut jobs.😂
One fun home rule I have seen for the light SD 1 hour mechanic is that the DM rolls 2d4 (or some.other dice combination) and substracts the result from the 60 mins (not all torches expire at the exact time).
While I love AV, this is my first opportunity to watch an episode when it comes out. Love the idea of small one shots or short run campaigns
Ted, if you fail focus, the spell ends, you don't lose the spell. You can cast it again, or try to anyways, don't roll a 1.
Thanks, good to know! (Jeez Mike, you led me astray)
@@warduke42 that was matt. i went along with it tho
55 minutes in and I am loving that I get to see my current favorite system being represented and another member of 3d6 DTL’s dming style! Excited to see other series with other games too!
Wow, what a nice surprise.
What the what indeed!!! Can't wait to give this a listen while doing chores today! Thanks 3d6
I like the imagery of Mike explaining to his kids HE didn't kill their characters, the GOBLIN did.
i won't say that hasn't happned.
I much prefer Arden Vul and I haven't much interest in shadowdark but I'm a big fan of Mike so this can't be that bad!
amuse-bouche is an amazing idea!
Dammit guys, im still trying to catch up on Arden Vul!
Enjoyed the game, players and referee "I'm usually surfing the internet when you are describing the rooms" Mike did a great job running it.
I'm not crazy about the system, but definitely want to check out the adventures Kelsey has put out. I've heard there is good stuff in the zines as well.
obv i enjoy the system. can verify that the zines are FIRE. not just a few classes and spells but essential a mini-campaign setting. typically have a hex map, some classes, spells, monsters and a full on adventure. a lot of value.
@@michaelmorrison8679 ah that's awesome to hear! Looking forward to more of this if y'all get around to it.
I'm just not a fan of DC checks, they feel arbitrary in a weird way that general hand-wavy rulings don't (which I can easily see being viewed the same way), or try to add balance to everything, which I'm not crazy about. There are some other things in the system, but this is the big one for me. As a book, I think it is written well and designed, definitely a well-made tome.
With that said, I think you ran the session well, and made it a lot of fun for the players and viewers. I totally get why Shadowdark is cited as the bridge between 5e and OSR-ish games.
@@kylegraywolf tbh it felt weird calling for dc x checks in the session. I did want to try the mechanics as close to RAW as possible though. It felt bad when david failed his climb check but in that moment i was like "failure is fun too" and went with it.
@@michaelmorrison8679 you definitely made the most of it! But those moments are big reason why I'm not a fan of them. "They" say you should always run a system raw before you start messing with it 🤷♂
I think the best thing to do is skip any dice rolling for tasks unless the PCs are pressed for time or the results of failure are severe. Otherwise, the idea is that the crawlers are good at their jobs.
Amuse-bouche is a great idea. I can't think of anything amuse-bouchier than a nice backstabby session of Paranoia. Hint. Hint.
i can't agree with you more
@@michaelmorrison8679 same same The Computer requires our compliance.
Love ShadowDark so much more than 5e. Whether or not I delve into OSR who knows.
The Mother? Well, now we know what happened to Deino
lol the parallel was not lost on me. mothers are scary
Loved the session- so fun seeing a different dynamic and Jon getting to play - was it hard to not take the reins and not make quick decisions the entire time? Regardless, it was a great watch!
After seeing Matt tease on the Lothar eye, I really want a tshirt with the new and improved Lothar. 👁️
wwhhHHAAAAAAATTT?!??
Squeee! This is so cool!
You do realise, to the 3d6-DTL-institutionalised, this qualifies as borderline kink....
why did he do that
Why did who do what?
@@3D6DTL why must he chase the cat?
@@3D6DTL sorry why did david run around invisible with a glowing hat and then die horribly
@butchnighthawk1673 Sounds like a good time to me. 🤷♂️
