One of my favorite villain speeches. The combination of those profound and terrifying words (and the philosophical connotations behind them) and that cold emotionless voice chilled me to the bone.

@@PrinceoftheAbyss I do not believe that they did that out of evil. Their intentions were pure, to reset the universe every once in a while, given that organic life was a "disease" - to which extent many may agree with.

When you state this they see it as you are attacking their whole existence and thus they will dismiss you as crazy, tin foil hat, they will get irrationally aggressive with you, they will ignore you, they will do anything and everything they possibly can to avoid looking at this cold, hard truth because they are afraid.
The sheer emptiness you feel after finishing this series. Facing the Reapers you were bound to fail no matter what decision you make. But you fight anyway. Better to fight and maybe, lose. Than to not fight and lose indefinitely.

We thought the Reapers were the greatest threat out there... Then we met Leviathan. And we realized just what Sovereign meant when it said this.
Honestly, after playing Leviathan myself, I think they're more trouble than the Reapers, because at least the Reapers it's mechanical in thought. But the Leviathans? They have personal motivation, and it's concerning considering they're out there.
I picture Sovereign's face is sad as it speaks. It is speaking in facts and understands that we can't understand it.
This speech was amazing. I don't know much except that it's a game series. Like Pain said about the Cycle of Hatred. It should & needs to be broken. We are mortal yet there come people who make a huge difference in life that is remembered & told for long. If you did a good deed, the stars beyond will see it & speak of it.
The Reapers are the bad guys in the Mass Effect trilogy. There's isn't a gray area in their ideals like in Pain's. Keep reading if you don't care about spoilers.
I'm not gonna be super detailed cuz it would be too much. So millions of years before humanity and the other races of Mass Effect existed, was a sapient race known as Leviathans. They were the dominate race during their time. The Leviathans noticed that the "lesser" races would build synthetics (robots/AI) to aid them. And eventually synthetics would rebel against their creators and war breaks out and organic life dies. So the Leviathans develop their own AI with the mandate to preserve life. This AI eventually reaches the conclusion that organic life itself is the problem and turns on the Leviathans (ironic) as well as the other races during this time period; it does this by creating the very first Reaper known as Harbinger.
So to break it down it goes like this: sapient races that reach space flight capabilities might find technology (mass effect relay network and Citadel) purposely left behind by the AI and its Reapers. Finding this technology allows for a huge technological jump. In turn this allows for the races to become super advanced much faster, but unknowingly dependent on Reaper technology, which is always exploited in the end. Once a bunch of different races hit this level, the Reapers come. They then attack organic life, harvest them, and turn them into Reapers, a hybrid of organic/synthetic life, which serves the AI's mandate to preserve all life.
Super cool villains, but the logic is super flawed once you find out why the Reapers do what they do.

They believe that organic life is pathetic & wants to convert them into something like them or destroy them. They have been behind everything like Madara or Kaguya. Can you explain reapers a bit more? What's the relationship between Sovereign & Reapers?
@@epicvegeta8717 Reapers are basically organic/synthetic ships. Reapers are debated to be either highly advanced VI (virtual intelligence) or shackled AI. The difference between a VI and an AI is that VI's are programmed to do certain things and cannot deviate from it, whereas AI's are like people, so they can learn and ask question and have their own personal goals, etc. A shackled AI is similar to a VI in that it cannot deviate from their programming, but can still learn and ask questions and stuff, but cannot act on any new knowledge/perspective it may gain. This is why some think Reapers are VI/Shackled AI because they will not deviate, nor even consider an alternative to their solution of harvesting life in order to preserve it.
They're different classes of Reapers, meaning they vary in size, but Harbinger is the biggest and only of it's type. Sovereign itself is a Capital Ship class, so the second biggest in size; Capital Ship sized Reapers are made from the race that is considered the most dominate during a cycle. Races that are not considered to be the most dominate are made into smaller sized classes of Reapers, but make no mistake, even the smallest Reaper is still gigantic and powerful.
Sovereign is a single Reaper among thousands. After every harvest cycle, the Reapers retreat into deep space in order to wait for the next cycle without accidentally being found. Sovereign stays behind in the Milky Way galaxy (where the game's setting takes place) to monitor the organic life that is left behind (races that were not advanced enough are spared), or that will eventually come to be as it's a 50,000 year wait. Once these newer races become hyper advanced, Sovereign will go to the Citadel, which is a both a place where organic life eventually comes to live and house their galactic government, but also a mass effect relay unbeknownst them. To explain, a mass effect relay allows for FTL (faster than light travel), so once Sovereign activates it, it allows for the Reapers to arrive en mass back in the Milky Way unexpectedly, thereby catching everyone in the galaxy off guard and beginning the new harvest cycle. Sovereign gets a lot of screen time because it's the antagonist of the first game. But the leader the of the Reapers is Harbinger, as it was the first Reaper made by the Leviathan's AI (known as the Catalyst or Starchild) I mentioned in my other comment.

The Reapers are a fascinating race and enemy. Their not evil, for the sake of evil. In an objective sense, they were doing good in their own right. The intelligence that created them, was created to find a solution between organic and synthetic life. The Reapers were the solution for millions of years till one person stopped them
Unless someone stands up for what is right. We don't need to be lab rats unless we choose to be. I will comment on the video right after this.
The Reapers were a fascinating culmination of the old 'rise of the machines' trope in sci-fi. They're not just the remnants of one civilization; they're the last remnant of thousands, maybe millions of civilizations. The death knell of galactic life since the dawn of possibly the first space faring civilization. They were a terrific and terrifying enemy.
