- The Drive's Sean Evans stops by Jay Leno's Garage to hear the stories behind some of Jay's favorite American muscle in his collection: '71 Hemi Dodge Challenger, crate-engined Buick Roadmaster, Ford Galaxie 500 7-liter, and 1,000+-hp RWD Oldsmobile Toronado.

Only issue I have with this video is that it wasn't 3 hours long.
I agree . I beleave Jay is about as real a person as it gets. Not many like him these days.
What I LOVE is he DRIVES ALL OF THEM!!!
I prefer 10-15 minutes. I got shit to do lol.
@@AE-bm4no liar
discostoo: Exactly what I thought as well.
If you were only allowed one "Jay Leno's Garage" video (of American cars)to watch with your grandson(s),I think this would be it.
the best carguy story i have ever heard in my life is Jay tricking his father to get the muffler delete in the galaxie. Seriously its pricelss
Not to mention the police pursuit package! lol
I bet he grew to love those options after he hit a few potholes lol. "Cop suspension, cop brakes, cop shocks! What, you don't like it?"
TwisTed Taipan owning cop cars is the best!
Cool rides
pretty sure that story is BS
Love Jay Leno, real car guy."It's a car, I drive it." Exactly. If you can't afford to drive it don't buy it. Tired of the investors buying cars and locking them away. Jay is not one of them.
I know! People buying Ferrari Enzos or LaFerraris with the intentions of never driving them is the worst! It’s a LaFerrari! It was made to be driven at high speeds!
@Jake DoesntLikeU My grandfather owns a 70s nova SS. Has never driven it. he bought it as a pile of rust and restored it to all original. Now i get him not wanting to drive it in the town he lives in. People don't know how to drive there. But for years we've all been telling him he should drive it, take a road trip with it after all the work he did on it.
Always liked Jay. He had to stick his nose in politics. Hosting fund raiser for Gropen Joe Biden. Hasta la vista Jay.
@@DevinEMILE Drive it, it's a car!
Jay's been a big car person since the 50s when he was little.
Yep, I'd still take that orange 70s Challenger over a new hellcat.
Oh course, I can get hellcats ALL day long!
Orange challenger, once in a lifetime, “Maybe”.
I'd prefer a white '70 Challenger like Kowalski drove in "Vanishing Point". Having no resources to accomplish that, I bought myself a 2013 Chally R/T 5.7L/6 speed/3.73 limited slip as a retirement present. Fun to drive, plenty of power, shades of yesteryear.
Personally I'd rather have an ss comaro but if I had to choose I'd take the Challenger
@Dave Wesley the hellcat is such a better car i have both i'm 56
Me too. The old challenger is plenty fast and is worth more $$$ than the hellcat.
The "Ford options story" puts me in mind of a friend who's mother let him do the options page on the '66 Nova Wagon that she purchased brand new. He checked off every "HO" (I'm pretty sure the motor was a 327 HO, basically a 'Vette powerplant) and rear-end/suspension upgrade option lol. Had a sleeper/tire broiler when it arrived. One day he was cutting donuts in the parking lot of the local burger drive-in while all his friends watched, and his Mom walked up (while he was going 'round mind you!), jerked the door open and snatched the keys! From then on, whenever he and his buds were getting up to stuff that was "questionable" and they wanted to get a rise out of him, they'd say "Hey man, here comes your Mother!", which never failed to make him look around to see if she really was! True story. Rest easy MagicBird...
How rich/stupid do you have to be to have your child do that?
@@Shinkajo How small-minded and 'woke' do you have to be to make an assumption like that which leads you to post such an inane and boorish question about a funny story comment on a UA-cam post?
@@johngerson7335 Woke? Huh, what? I'm saying that I couldn't imagine me or anyone I knew growing up who could pick the options on their parents new car. "Here's the list Johhny, have fun!". Seems like an out of touch or irresponsible thing to do. It's like, I have so much money that I don't care if my kid blows thousands of dollars on options that I don't even need.
@@Shinkajo Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. The story's just the story; I think you're over-analyzing it just a bit, but whatever...
Cars are cool. Jay is cool. But hearing the stories of Jay sneaking one past is father when ordering a new car is even more cool! Jay, I hope you're around for a long, long time preserving and sharing car culture for us all!
".... a few weeks later I found a ticket on my dad's dresser. He got stopped for going 110 and I knew then he really enjoyed the car...."(paraphrased)
Indeed. The full story is even more entertaining!
+
Do you remember by chance what the name of the video is where he tells the full story? I would love to watch it.
the episode where they build the 7 liter galaxy just search for it
We we're 15 when we used to Joyride my friends dads 1965 Buick Wildcat with a 455 while he was sleeping Steve used to sneak in his dads bedroom and steal the keys push the car down the block before we'd start it then do burnouts I told his dad that story on his 72nd birthday party I thought he was going to die I laugh my ass off I guess I was the only one that thought it was funny lolz
That 71 challenger is downright gorgeous.
Jay is an American Icon. He’s already made his place in history books. Nothing like a gear head who’s career benefits were spent in this way. This dude entertained us with his humor and this is how he gives back. What a real American! Got to be the most unselfish man on the earth at this time.
Thanks Jay Leno
Jay’s collection is an example of what you can do when money is never a concern. Wow. 1000hp Toronado, who else would do that 😀
Mischievous young boys that love fast cars
If I remember right, Jay told the tricking his father story on the Tonight Show years ago. What he told on the show that was not in this video was, one day Jay was looking for something in one of his father's drawers and came across a speeding ticket his father had gotten in the car, for going 120 mph. Jay's knowledge of all his vehicles and motorcycles is amazing.
Leno is love. Leno is life
8:42 Jay forgets this isn't Jay Leno's Garage, and starts talking to the camera like it's just another one of his episodes
Yeah, He probably realized, the interviewer was not at the top of his game... :)
Robert Rowley Jay is the mecha of all car gurus. I think he could take over the show no problem
Sure, the low level explanations of Jay tell, he's making it as easy to understand as possible. You always need to know who's your audience.
This is what we want - and he knows it.
*Mecca
you know he's a car guy when GM puts your name on a motor, thats awesome!
Jay is a true car guy. He has everything.
It warms my heart to hear his "Father and muscle car" story. I think (Me included) if you grew up in the 70s-80s your 30 something dad at one point had an old car that was in the V8 muscle range and you remember fond trips in it and you absorbed the energy both it and your father was sharing with you. It saddens me to know, that that type of childhood memory is going away now and our kids of today won't know that feeling of driving with your dad in a car that made you feel tiny yet strong at the same time. Miss my dad and that car.
jay loves his sleepers...
That huge 1,000+-hp RWD 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado is the ultimate sleeper.
Jay Leno absolutely one of the best car guys around he's a straight-up his collection of cars second to none.
Invincible Extremes Muscle Cars Garage - I love Jays sleepers.
Man, how can you not? Absolute beauts!
That challenger is my dream car, i didn't knew jay had one so perfect.
WHY THE HELL WOULD I ORDER THE MUFFLER DELETE PACKAGE?! Because you ordered the police pursuit package. Now thats funny, i wish i could just order something like that now
Gas is around $2 a gallon and the (modern) Muscle Cars are in production - get you one
onenikkione you must live somewhere besides california.....any decent gas station is at least 3 bucks for regular....muscle car going to need premium....a full tank of gas going to be 60-70 bucks twice a week
You got that right and when you live more than 30 minutes from work you're likely to get stuck in traffic on the freeway and whether you are moving or not that gas is guzzling. I know! lolol. I hate that aspect but I would not sit in traffic with nothing other than my ride.
Jake 4.7 p
@Mark Rylander I get what you’re saying but American Muscle is back in a big way and they’re going all out. The new Dodge Challenger Hellcat has 797 horsepower. It will be a highly sought after collectors piece in the future, just the way American Muscle is supposed to be.
Old is class.
I felt an internal swell of joy at 0:17. It's nice to know that all those old Broughs and other bikes are alive and well-attended.
Yes. True!
the 70 Challenger is defiantly one my favorite classic muscle car!
Timothy Chan it's such a beauty
+AZ -1 always preferred the '71-'72 hemi Cuda
Haha, I always preferred the grille of the 71 Cuda; which shares the same platform as the challenger!
I managed to get a nice 70 Challenger back in 1988 for $1,000. Even back then it was a good price.
My biggest regret of all my cars was selling my 1970 440 6 pak challenger convertible for 8 grand in 1982. The car had a shaker hood, 4 speed and a dana rear end. The hood alone goes for more than 8 grand today.
"I live in a hilly area"
and here I am 2000 ft from sea level and driving a 1.2 litre 80hp car lol
@doodskie999 What a luxury! Try 29hp...
*****
About the same power to weight ratio as my 2CV. :D
He slipped that one in like the Pro he is.
Thatguy...yeah, a very Beverley hilly area!!
Jay Leno is an American treasure. Like the real life version of a Chuck Norris joke.
My favorite would be the Roadmaster. Such a classic.
Imagine getting owned by that in your Mercedes Benz AMG
Is this an interview or Jay showing around some random dude he found off the street?
lmao
some dudebro they found at a local frat house
I wish it had been me cause I need his Pit Crew to hit my Camaro 😆
I would much rather hear Leno talk about his stuff than some douche interrupting him the entire time. He did a good job.
Pretty cool. Jay Leno is such a likeable person.
The story about the Galaxy 7.0 Litre is hysterical!
That Navy Blue Metallic WS6 behind the Toronado is gorgeous!
sexiest Firebird ever!
PANTYEATR1 Lol, its nice, but my fav is the old smokey and the bandit style, 77 I think.
It's only gorgeous if you favor low budget cars
Man those are some beautiful muscle cars man.
Best line, re the Toronado, "I don't give it the valet or anything like that"!
Jay is a crazy, crazy man. In the best way possible.
Jay IS AWESOME! His stories are so wonderfully told.
The Roadmaster will be the most valuable in his collection.
that 7 liter 500 so damn clean
DJ JONES the 50s Buick is pretty awesome too
That’s a nice fox body in your profile picture is it yours?
I really like your comment about not using large diameter wheels and tyres...so many beautiful old cars are spoiled by putting those large wheels when they do nothing for the looks of the car...
I couldn't agree more!!!
I like it too, I'd avoid flooring it in those restomods though just to ensure you're getting power to the floor
grab a drink
sit in his garage
enjoy looking at those cars!
I never get enough not only of looking at Jay's car's, but just as much, listening to him talk about them. Which is just as exciting to me if not more. Thanks for sharing. John
Damn... He has his first car. Inspiring
that black Viper R/T-10 behind the Galaxy is sexy as hell.
That Buick Roadmaster is so classy, stylish and gorgeous. Wow! Love it!
Back in 1975 my first car was a 72 Chevy Malibu with a 350. Everyone at school had a muscle car back in those days and bragging rights was everything. What a great era. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Admit it Jay you loved having your name on that 572 it was no joke :)
Another Evans blunder, he should have been right on Jay about that, That's is super cool having your name on the Valve Covers and a plaque to back it all, no story there Evans, This guy needs a paper route, maybe he can find a story in one of the papers he's tossing on a porch, speaking of TOSSER !!
I love how modest he is about have a factory engine built and named after him...
so true what he says at 3:00 about the future of classic musclecars, I see it all the time here with all the cars meeting and cruising just in weekends and drove by only true enthusiasts. Long live Jay!!
If there’s a heaven it is in Jay Leno’s garage ❤️
Kudos to Jay for putting up with this guy.
god i love how that olds looks.
Me too. Its quite a beautiful machine.
Jay has an amazing memory!
If I didn't know any better, I would have thought this was another episode of Jay Leno's Garage. Great video! How can one not like Jay? He seems so likable and approachable. Best of all, he's one of the few gearheads who actually drives many of his prized possessions. Thanks for the video, Drive!
Thumbs up and subscribed.
Love jay leno. A true car guy
Jay's Garage are goals
When I was a junior in high school, I loved the Olds Toronado when it first came out.
I used to draw it all the time. All my notes, from when I was supposed to be taking notes in class, were covered in doodles of the car. Instead of listening to the teacher, I'd be concentrating on the Toronado sketches. That's probably why I got "C"s in those classes, and I blame the car for that.
Jay's Toronado is the car I would have wanted. Same color. Those upgrades he's made are astounding. REAR WHEEL DRIVE!!
That's nuts!
I love how Jay had all these gorgeous, classic cars with 572 big blocks and twin turbos, he’s a true car guy at heart and it shows with his engines.
Early 70's Challengers actually handled pretty good.
jay 🙏 his car collection is so dreamy
So awesome! Thank you Jay Leno for helping keep the past Autos alive.
Jay Leno is a true gear head, he is passionate about every car & motorcycle he owns. He builds exactly what he wants and he has a great crew of craftsman that work on all of his cars & bikes as full time employees, I have seen him frequently have others builders cars on his lift doing repairs, I distinctly remember the Ring Brothers wide body mustang, a customer's car on its maiden voyage have a rear coil spring issue that they fixed.
Who knew he was so cool. Got to love those gear heads
Jay is real boss 👍
Nuno Costa With real fu money.
I hardly could tell you guys apart "N"eutral "S"afety switch is all I saw.. Jeez people get a thumbnail
More than just a thumbnail but a thumbnail that represents what you are about or is you. Too many people with BS thumbnails.
I just love Jay and his passion for quality cars, or I should say, those pieces of artwork. The workmanship is beyond perfection!
Jay Lenos channel is probably my favorite UA-cam channel. His knowledge of cars is amazing. You can tell that he is really in his element when he is in his "garage". But the story about tricking his dad with the Galaxie is classic.
The ultimate testament to a true car buff:
A giant crate engine named after you - 572 Leno -
Jay, such a car guy....that Tornado is sick !!!
The Toronado and Galaxie are my favs from this video, but that Buick is the ultimate sleeper.
This is one awesome site, and Mr. Leno has truly enjoyed his life through his love of cars. Thanks for sharing your life!
I don't know about you but I just watched another episode of Jay Leno's Garage. This guy was more of a guest than host.
Technically he was a guest.
Made the episode more enjoyable
Totally, I was thinking Jay could have had a better time without the loser holding the Mic, I wonder what Leno thought to himself later...... Oh I know TOSSER !!
Jay Leno is not going to let anyone take charge, let alone in his garage. He couldn't even let Conan take charge of the Tonight Show.
who'd like to have a tour around jay's garage?
If it cost anything less than my left nut please sign me up. I promise not to touch anything and Mr Leno wouldn't even have to be there. Just let me wander around and drool.
This dude is really cool.
jay is the man, i could spend weeks with him going through cars
7 liter Ford is Awesome with the Roush Motor in a 6-speed in a Buick Roadmaster is a total sleeper
Rear Wheel Drive Toronado is the way to go.
Jay your my HERO...I LOVE your passion and desire to not only save but to restore and make your own VERY personal collection. My only prayer is to one day be able to afford to come and see all of what you have done. It blows my mind. Thank you for not only doing this but to put it where we all can see and dream and go back to those days when we drove hard and LOVED every second of it . You truly inspire me !!!! Again THANK YOU from the bottom to the top of my heart !!! God bless !!!
I could listen to Jay talk about cars and share his stories for hours. Such a cool guy.
Jays living the dream
Anything with an original Hemi is worth big bucks
He must be the uncle that has all those epic storis for Christmas! True passionate of car!
When i sold Fords in 1966,we had one of the 7 Liter's in maroon on our showroom. Also had one of the Cobra's there-one of the cars driven by our top seller was a GT 350.Those days are long gone!
Jay Leno is a big influence and role model of mine. Love you Mr Leno
Very enjoyable. Personal tour from Jay Leno!!. Great video of his cars. In 1973 I met Bill Harah in person and had a tour of his personal garage he had at his slt home. Then he had his large public collection in Sparks Nevada. Does anyone remember him? I think had a fantastic collection of cars. Also boats because he lived at south lake Tahoe.
John Eason - I went to Harah’s Car Museum when I was 12 or 13. I still have the post cards I bought there. That was some collection he had
besides the lukewarm host I enjoyed seeing jays muscle car's.
yer, whatever floats ye boats.
I'm sure he was just nervous 👍
I want to Jay to take us to his machine shop !! I want to meet the guys who puts these things together , genius !
I don't know no one that has a car collection better than Jay Leno only reason I say that because he has something of everything
9:38 how about the ram air Trans Am in the background??? I've always wanted Jay to make a video on it!
Would be cool. When I was 18 I met the girl who became my wife. She was driving a 1986 Trans-Am. She also owned a Bandit Trans-Am. Later we got a 1985 Trans-Am...beautiful arctic white one. Great days. She is still my wife 30 years later and we have a Mustang now lol. We are never going to grow up.
MrGhost370 you care enough to comment lmao
MrGhost370 He has 6 likes and you have none. Clearly, someone does care.
Daehawk Good for you man. Best said "Life is too short to drive boring cars." Average people dont pay attention to how much they drive. Why not make it something fun rather than a chore? I'm 17 right now. I drive a modded out jeep wrangler but next year I have to give it back to my dad (it's been mine through high school) I plan on buying a 69' challenger or a lotus evora when my time with the jeep is up. I've been saving up some time and still have a year to go and at this rate I'll get one. I hope to never own a boring POS daily driver. Its better to sacrifice some creature comforts for a nice car in my eyes. I'm glad you find enjoyment in cars and found someone who does too.
Daehawk How sweet ;D
That 70 hemi challenger back in day was the best, like today modern srt hellcat demon is out of this world. Like leno said that modern srt would eat that old rt live, in my book old stuff are the best.
CHALLENGER!! 1970 OR 2008 SRT, ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSCLE CARS ON THE PLANET👌👌👌🤔😘😘😘😘😘😘👌👌👌👌👌👌😘😘😘😘😘👌👌👌👌😘😘😘😘👌👌👌👌😘😘😘.
.....unfortunately!! Latest model of the challenger are not as good looking as the 1970 and 2008 models!!.
1970 is true American muscle and like he said, you got to be a true enthusiast to own that car
Hellcat beats the '70 Hemi every way possible, but I'll take the original Challenger - old school still wins!
Jay said the 440 was a better street engine than the Hemi, which is true. But I speak from many years of experience when I tell you that the BEST Challenger/ Cuda engine was the 340. Far more powerful than what Mopar said, much lighter in the front end for superior handling. Best muscle car from the muscle car era, IMHO.
Jay, your my biggest hero. I have a huge passion for cars. Unfortunately i been so broke and homeless for a few years. I hope one day i can get a couple hotrods and maybe build my 3 kids a car when they grow up.
Great show thanks. Love Jay and classic American muscle cars. Jay is still excited by these cars 🇬🇧
Nice Mopars...
Jay is the best.
Jay just got even cooler, man...these cars are absolutely stunning!
The Ford Galaxy is an amazing car. My older brother had A white Ford Galaxy just like that back in the 70's. It was a fast amazing car. My brother loved it. Cool video thumb's up.
Amazing! Kudo's to Jay for doing things right!
"You could take a guy from Albania, show him this car and he would know it's American" 😂😂😂👌
Just realized something about Jay Leno I never thought was true. He’s nuts! I love it!
Surprised a 70 Chevelle SS 454 wasn't amongst one of them....especially the rare LS6. That car was gorgeous and absolute beast!
I'd would have loved to hear stories about Jay growing up from his dad's point of view. I can hear it now "I remember the time he tricked me into getting a car without a muffler. I thought he'd grow up to be a mechanic and after he got that comedy stuff out of the way he did become a mechanic. "
Brat Meister he passed
Brat Meister read his bio...funny stories of him growing up.
Top demais=D
Binge watching every episode is unique Jay Leno thanks for sharing.
I love how he has a story for every car
I never knew cars could be so interesting until I started watching Jay Leno's Garage.
Since he had no children, he developed a hobby, vehicles (Cars, trucks, tractors, etcetera).
OnlyTheEd no kids? Wow didn't know that
Some great cars. The want with that old Buick is particularly strong.......
kool humble car lover, I love his collection
2022 and this is still awesome!
