Finally some straight talk on minidsp. Was quite on the fence about options and complexities of this device but I'm much better after this explanation for my 2.1 music room. Great info! Now to determine if I want to research a home theater solution for 7.1 channel. Thanks.

I don't know which school this kid went to, but I'm pretty sure he's smarter than all his teachers. AMAZING! Thanks.. this is the best tutorial on EQ Iv ever seen. The audio industry needs people like this to educate the public. As a professional film maker.. I am super impressed with the presentation and delivery. The info is par excellence. :-)

This is amazing. I refer to both the DSP technology and your presentation thereof.
I am an older audiophile who got his electrons sparked back in the 60s with old tube amps
and some Heathkit (building) experience. I notice an Adcom power amp in the background.
I have the GFA 5500. So it's obvious you know all about what constitutes a good power amp. Being retired now I have dedicated a lot of time to studying the audio offerings of the day. Aside from all of the good things like R2R Macs etc etc - this DSP "opportunity" is quite frankly - something I never thought I'd see (as a consumer product). Okay, I'll stop but I do want to indeed thank you for all of your effort in making this video. I'm a wee bit pumped
about acquiring this unit and that's entirely thanks to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is exactly the kind of video I was hoping to find for setting the EQ's with my miniDSP C-DSP 6x8. miniDSP has a tutorial on their site, but being completely new to Room EQ Wizard, this video is what made using it possible.

Excellent, excellent video. I have been working my way through MiniDSP 2X4 equalization, crossover, time and phase alignment . . . the whole 9 yards. This video really helps. I have two systems - one is conventional 2nd order passive xover and the other was built with the mini. I'm now in the process of converting the passive xover system to an active xover using the mini. I'm saving this video as a reference.

Great video! I wish you could do a tutorial on how to use a miniDSP together with an AV receiver in a 5.1/7.1 (and so on) setup, especially for multi sub / main speaker integration. It makes me so happy to see a very young person interested in hifi. Reminds me of good times before smart phones, internet and social media helped us all to a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD... When folks cared about quality of sound and quality of music, when music had actual musicians envolved as oppose to gangaster poets... Actual instruments instead of a computer....
    Keep up the good work.

Nice video on the basics on room treatment.
You might be able treat (reduce) those room modes by placing the speakers, subwoofers and listening position at the right places in the room. The cross-over point and roll off can also be varied for a better result.
Also one should use EQ above 250 Hz with moderation. A microphone does not record sound the same way the hearing works. Multiple measurements can be done to get a better idea of how the room works and to find which peaks/dips you actually want to treat.

This is an incredible video. I used to have the Proton D940, I gave it away when I was moving. I should have held onto it, but I hope it found a good home. I bought it new right when it came out. I didn't know it was related to NAD... I actually auditioned both NAD and Proton, and chose the Proton over the NAD, thought it sounded more pleasing. My friend preferred the Nakamichi. :-)

I would love to see you do a tutorial on setting up a dual subwoofer system. Particularly using 2 different subs and trying to get them right. I would imagine it would be a challenge and would like to do myself. I actually run a sealed 12" I've made and then bought a PB2000. Running the both of these is kind of a nightmare. I would love to see someone else battle a situation like this though. Lots of phase issues!!

the Umik-1 mount is threaded (the plastic part). So, you can take out the metal bolt/adapter so that you have a larger mount for that fits most tripods.
I wasn't sure the plastic would be threaded figured that bolt was pushed in - thought that could help some people who may not know. Saved me from buying an extra adapter!

1/24 octave smoothing leaves a great deal of high Q peaks and dips visible that aren't all audible with typical program material. 1/12 octave smoothing may be a better choice, although without the convenience of REW EQ outputs directly into MiniDSP software, such as with most other DSP software, lower resolution may be sufficient. 1/6 octave, for example.

Great Video! I noticed using a spectrum analyzer on my phone (Speccy on Android), if the microphone sample rate is set to 48khz, I see a huge dip in the response above 18khz with pink or white noise. When I set the sample rate to 96khz, white noise is flat and pink has the expected gradual slope downward. W. the nonHD version of miniDSP, I think the sample rate is only 48khz. Is that going to screw up your highs or is that just a phone/mic DAC artifact (pixel 2 xl if that matters). I subbed your channel. Really useful stuff! Thank you.

the primare integrated amplifier has pre out for bi amping or to use a different poweramp as you said.but it does not become like a separate pre and power amp system.the reson is if the power amp in the primare cant be shut off when pre out is in use the advantage of low volt and currents and the noise it create in enwiroment for the pre to work in since the power amp is on an disturbes the cleaner signal you could get if it was a real preamp for separate system.

I use EQ APo , great thing , and ive used Room EQ , but thing is you cant EQ the room , simple as that . if Speaker is already purchased that too is fixed so , if you measure it there is little you can change , Room EQ is not possible , so that is it , but not to say that this knowledge is wasteful , this is a must for PA systems , theaters and all that , even Speaker and amp design , there are institutions that will pay you to do this and where it matters , so its great knowledge

Or do you leave it in front of your left speaker? In the video you measure the left speaker with the mic in front of it....but its not clear if you moved it for the sub.

On the minidsp output, do you run L amd R on separate output channels? If not, then how do you wire up say a single subwoofer to the output of the minidsp. How would you wire up an amplifier to the minidsp output?

  • @gordthor5351
    @gordthor5351 3 роки тому

A line level (around 2volts) input likely won't "blow anything up", except your ears. It will be very loud though (full output of your amplifier) with no control of the volume. If you have speaker much weaker than your very powerful amp, then your speakers could be damaged. It won't hurt the integrated amp, because most preamps output considerably more than 2 volts. 7 volts and higher is common.

Amazing video. Haven't finished it yet but the first raised an important question : when using the miniDSP in between analogy eauipments (preamp / amp for instance), I understand that the miniDSP will start by digitizing the analogy signal. Since it's integrated AFTER the preamp, what happens when you listen at low volume ? The miniDSP will digitize a low level signal using only a very small fraction of its dynamic range. That should severely impact the sound quality right ?

Next video should be on speaker placement, and then room treatment. I am planning on asking for some review samples as well.

First of all, thanks for the video. Very helpful. When you insert the MiniDSP between your pre-amp and your power amp, you add one A/D conversion and one D/A conversion. Assuming your source is digital in the first place and converted to an analog signal before entering the pre-amp, this yields the chain of three conversions i.e. D/A-A/D-D/A. Do you have any concerns about this in terms of signal degradation, added noise, etc.?
I am asking since I have an integrated amp with pre-out main-in connections so I could do the same. However, I opted to run my digital source directly into the MiniDSP (optical input) and from there straight into the main-in bypassing the pre-amp. The downside to this is, as you pointed out, the lack of a physical volume control and visual feedback of the volume setting. The benefit is the shortest possible signal path and just one D/A conversion. However, out of convenience I am debating whether I should insert the MiniDSP between the pre-out and main-in as well.
    Your comments are appreciated. Thanks.
