Chord Fragments For Better Guitar Playing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 чер 2024
- We don't have to play full chords and scales. Try using chord and scale fragments for better guitar playing. You will take your guitar playing to the next level by looking at chord fragments to improvise lead and rhythm guitar. This is an intermediate guitar lesson. Teaching how to use the chords and scales that you already know, and then taking fragments of them to create some great lead and rhythm guitar 🎸

This may be the best electric guitar lesson on the internet. It captures so many big ideas, like the CAGED system, but does it in a simple and intuitive way with some great licks. Bravo sir.
Wow! That’s kind of you to say! This is an awesome way to look at the fretboard for sure! Thanks so much for the comment and enjoy your weekend👍

Yeah, layering fragments of triads, pentas and diatonic scales together is much easier to visualize and use to compose music. Sharing your knowledge is a gift to us! Thanks buddy!
Well, said Rafa! I enjoy making these videos, and always happy to help! Thanks so much for all your support and enjoy the rest of your weekend👍
This is exactly where I am. This is essential to move from advanced beginner cowboy cords and scales to a more freeing approach to the instrument.
Nice! I’m glad to hear that! Thanks for the comment👍
Crap I’m doomed then💡 that light bulb moment has come and gone 😂
That lightbulb moment happened to me many years ago so you have a long way to go! Thanks for checking out the video! Later bro 😎

Bridge of Sighs !! Perfect place to use these skills.
You gotta love Robin Trower.
These skills can apply to so much of Trower's music.
That's what makes you such a great teacher , Mr. Rusty, As you simplify things that most of us give up on when they're not simplified. I've learnt more from your lessons on the theory Side of things, than I have in years of trying to learn to much to quick , great lesson and thank you

Another great lesson, thank you. About 1/3 the way through i started to see the different chord parts and scales building into an immense range of probable music. Thank you for sharing your experience knowledge and passion with those of us trying to make music. BEST AND PEACE
Hey Chuck, there’s definitely some great tools here for us to focus on. Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and enjoy the rest of your weekend.👍
Rusty you keep opening up my mind with all your great lessons and advice. Thanks so much for all your help.
I’m glad to hear it my brother! Always good to hear from you! Talk to you soon👍
This exact concept is what I discovered a few months ago, with the help of many including Rusty. Locating triads and pentatonic scales around those triads up and down the neck has put me on the path to learning the fretboard and being able to play anywhere I want to in a given key. My playing has became far more melodic and actually sounds like music. Go figure! So, Rusty, you are definitely right about playing chord and scale fragments. It is huge and will turn on that light bulb. It did for me. Keep this type of content going Rusty. You are helping many, many folks become better guitar players. Cheers!
Hey Doug, this is a great comment. I’m excited that you’re really moving forward buddy! I appreciate your continued support and enjoy the rest of your weekend.👍

This lesson is so-much fun. I enjoyed it. Good video sir. Thank you.
Nice! I’m glad you had fun with it! Thanks for the comment👍
Lol... with peripheral neuropathy (numb fingers), fat fingers, early dementia at 68, failing eyes and tinnitus (since 25), If I had to play a full chord, I would bet the farm I will muff it. I've been grabbing pieces of chords and parts of scales for maybe 2 years now. Works perfectly in blues and I can do tht anywhere on the neck. Best tip I've seen in a long time , especially for those 'old farts'
Sorry to hear about your health issues! But that’s exciting that you can play some guitar with those small shapes. You can say a lot with a little on the guitar! Thanks a lot for checking out the lesson. Enjoy your Sunday.🙏
1:25 ive been there and 2 directions I learned to turn to.
1. I broke out my old records and proceeded to dissect the lead work and totally relearn the songs more correctly.
2. Single string approach of scale patterns.
The dedication to those two improved my playing.
Then later I got the grimoirs .
Repetitious practice of technic throughout those books engrained quite a bit to subconcious.
If you dont constantly practice the magic you loose it too.
Those are great things to practice on! You can’t go wrong. Thanks for checking out the video. Talk to you soon.👍
You're the best teacher
I greatly appreciate that! Thanks so much! Enjoy the rest of your weekend👍
Read Keith’s book, “Life.” He calls them, “pieces of chords.” Keith and Brian Jones figured out that their blues heroes NEVER played full chords, especially barre chords. Pieces of chords. They called it “guitar weaving” and it was The Stones’ trademark guitar sound and still is.
Nice! Words of wisdom here! This concept really opened my eyes to all the possibilities of the fretboard. I appreciate the comment Larry and I hope you have a great Sunday.🙏
Cheers from Ireland Rusty thank a
Thank you, mate! Good to hear from you. I appreciate you watching the video! Later bud 👍

Hey Robert, good to hear from you buddy! I hope all is well! Thanks so much for checking in and enjoy the rest of your Sunday🙏
Thanks Rusty ! These lessons of yours are interesting and helpful ! Can you make a similar video mixing in a minor chord, and maybe a dom 7th too please ? Much appreciated.
You’re welcome, Jim! That would be a good topic for a future lesson! I will look into that! Talk to you soon. Thanks.👍
@@rustysguitar1 Thanks for your consideration Rusty. I've been working on triads on the top 3 strings, and I like your demonstration using simple examples of how to connect one triad to another. Very inspiring.
Thanks Rusty good lesson

Hi Rusty, I just started your video and when I was following with my guitar, at around 2:50, I went in a full-out jam by myself! 😂 You do inspire people! Thank you Rusty! All the best from Belgium! 🇧🇪😎☀️🙏🏻
Thank you William! it’s amazing that the sound of one chord can inspire us. Greetings from Chicago! I appreciate all your support and enjoy the rest of your weekend👍
Another great lesson thanks for sharing
I appreciate that! Thanks for leaving a comment and have a happy Sunday🙏
This is great stuff. I’ve been playing triads and dyads for years but have not explored ways to connect them nearly enough. This is an inspiration for me to work on it. I’m playing with a trio this week of acoustic guitar, keyboard and me on electric. This type of chording & lead work will fit nicely. Thanks!
Right on bud! I’m glad you got something from the lesson. I hope you have a blast at the gig. Talk to you soon.👍
your doing a great job and make learning easier than all this techinical stuff your playing sounds great
Thanks Rick! Always good to hear from you! Have an awesome Sunday buddy🙏
Just now coming to grips with this.

Wow very easily explained ❤
Right on! I’m glad you liked the video 👍
Just xlnt thank you so much
You’re welcome and thanks so much for watching👍
Been doing this since I started 10 years ago. Wondered why so few online had failed to point out the blatantly obvious concept. Pebber Brown used to , but sadly he passed on. Fluency counts for more than clunky complexity.
Cool, Paul! Thanks for checking out the lesson. Talk to you soon.👍
That is an amazing sound you have there 😮 I'm going to give it a try
Cool! Hope you have fun with it! Enjoy the rest of your weekend👍
Thanks!
You’re welcome my friend Jon! Thank you for your support to my channel👍
Hi Rusty - I always appreciate ur humble guitar lessons which are helping me - any chance of you doing a lesson on how to make a backing track?
Hey Charles, thanks for checking out the video! Actually, I am still learning how to make tracks myself. But that would be a good topic for a video. I appreciate all your support and enjoy the rest of your weekend.👍
I wish that as you are describing everything you keep the graph up so we know where the notes are at least for me. It’s so confusing when all the different guitar instructors are like here check me out. This is how it’s done and then they just start ripping through it and I have to put the video on slow motion. It’s so difficult I really like your style and I hope that you can help, us learn better by keeping this in mind please.
Thanks a lot for the feedback! I appreciate it! Catch you later👍
sounds great!
Thanks a lot Joel! Catch you later buddy👍
As a drummer, I have no clue what you just said
I would love to learn this crap, but you need to start me at the beginning
Almost all of my subscribers are intermediate. This is overwhelming for a beginner for sure.
Hey Rusty, I sometimes have wrong strings ringing out while strumming triads on the middle strings etc. Maybe a lesson muting?
Thanx much for the great lessons!
Thanks for the comment! Yes, you need to work on your left hand muting. Finding ways to mute the unwanted strings as you lay your fingers on the strings that you want to ring. I touch on this topic in many of my videos but I will definitely focus on this topic in an upcoming video. Very important technique. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
Great lesson. Can you recommend any specific songs to learn to practice these concepts?
These concepts can help us improvise better. You can use the chord and scale fragments over any backing track. Thanks for checking out the video, Rich! I really appreciate it. Thanks.👍
Nice sound! Wich amp do you use?
Thanks for checking out the video. I’m using the Revv G 20 amp and driving it with the Revv tilt overdrive pedal. Also some reverb from the Strymon BigSky. Thanks a lot for checking out the video and enjoy your Sunday.🙏
Is there a “rule” for selecting notes for chord fragments? I’m learning the CAGED system and couldn’t play some of those full shapes if my life depended on it! I’m 61 and carpal tunnel is a thing in both hands now. Dagnabit.
If you are learning the caged system. You are already learning those chord fragments. There are not rules, but I was suggest learning chord shapes on string sets. Meaning three strings at a time. Many players use these small court shapes for all their playing. Thanks so much for checking out the video Tony. Talk to you soon.👍
@@rustysguitar1 Thank you 🙏🏾
I have been looking for a usa strat any suggestion is this allowed to ask any way just sell me yours that a nice sounding tone, imo sigle coil tone is the best.and subscribing to this Chantal has helped with my progress on guitar. RocknRollflat5

Thanks for checking out the video and have a great rest of your weekend👍
Yeah fractions of the cord.
Right on Tony! Thanks for checking in. Enjoy your Sunday.🙏
Do I hear CAGED sliding in the comments?
Players look at the fretboard in different ways. Thanks and have a great weekend.👍
Jazz players NEVER play full chords. 3rds and 7ths can be enough if the bass is covering Root and 5ths and the horns are all over the 6ths 9th and everything else spread across the section. Much more punch.
Right on brother! Thanks for checking out the video👍
Also by using chord fragments you’re also leaving room for the bass to be heard without any ‘muddying’ being introduced - except by the bass player of course! 🙄🫣😂
Very good point! That’s true. Thanks a lot for checking out my lesson. 👍
Thanks!
Wow! Thanks so much Arty! I really do appreciate your support to my channel. Means a lot my brother.👍
