The little pocket that Charlie was driving through in the first 3 minutes of the video was known as "Bossville"(in reference to Gangster Disciples and Black Diciples being the dominant gang in the area) back when I was in high school 10 years ago. It was rampant with shootings, drug activities, and raids.
When I was a kid, our family migrated over to the US from Mexico and my parents were looking to buy a house for me and my two brothers. The only thing within their range was a house in Harvey, and it was almost a done deal until my dad actually heard what Harvey was like from his co-workers (his job was/is at Harvey) and decided to cancel the plan, and we ended up moving to a small apartment (a bit crappy), in Blue Island. Blue Island wasn't that great, but was a lot better than Harvey. It was a crappy apartment, but was located in a better area. We were lucky for my dad to realize that. Sometimes, renting an apartment is better than buying a house in a crappy neighborhood. My father always stressed that it was important to place your family in the best possible environment. That was more important than just owning a house.
Born and raised in Harvey....remember Dixie Square mall rip(used in Blues Brothers movie) and the old movie theater that was used in the movie Cooley High but that was before my time, also birthplace of the dells .....Harvey is to Chicago what Compton is to Los Angeles...708 joe💯

I was born and lived in Harvey from 1955-1964 when we moved to Indiana. It was a safe place to live, still had residential development going on, good schools and a great smallish hospital. I miss the nice English couple living next to us on Winchester, and my Gr. Grandmothers home on Loomis. My father also was born & lived there back in the 30s

Thank you for showing H-Town, & although it's pretty gritty & ratchet, there ARE still those out there who are trying hard to hold on, but if you really wanna see some shit, venture West in the area of 154th & Dixie hwy, once a community of apartments & townhomes completely abandoned, gutted & neglected, called "The Reservation"(South), & the complex on the North side of 154th st., The Village, formerly 3 buildings owned by one interest, with a privately-owned single building at the West end of the street, which has been long-abandoned....Total concentrated desolation.
I remember Cornett Village(aka "The Village") and it was practically "the projects". That pocket of apartments was really bad 15 years ago and was raided(and heavily patrolled by Harvey police), which played a huge role in its almost total abandonment.
I stayed in the reservation back in the mid 80s joe right off western the back block...we called em the resos,restaurant on Dixie Hwy was called Mitchells had fi ass food and the Flea Market on Dixie Hwy was open then...good times💯
Robbins is pretty sad. My best friend grew up there, just a really strange neighborhood with some random nice homes next to crack houses. That whole area is weird because there are bad neighborhoods but then they're right next to really nice ones like Blue Island or Orland Park.
Robbins used to be cool until they put those projects up there & although most of them are no longer standing, they still have that old one down the street from Lydia, the main dope spot around those buildings....I used to have some damned good times in Robbins though, close to 40 years ago.
Austin and Oak Park is a good example. But Austin is getting better at least. I used to teach basic computer programming to high school kids in an after school program. Never really felt unsafe to be honest.

Typical south side neighborhood - commercial stretch looks ghetto, single family homes modest but well kept, rental property some good and some bad. My south side Ashburn neighborhood was like that when I was growing up, even though it was mostly built in the 50s-60 and I grew up in the 60s-70s. Some of those houses in the video look exactly like the houses when I grew up. It does look like parts of Harvey could use some cleaning up.
Ashburn used to be so much more lively when the Ford City Mall was still popular. After my family moved to Burbank they used to be there every nearly day.

I used to stay on Paulina in Harvey in 2005 I remember these guys were shot down the street. Everybody was outside....its just crack heads and gangsters and it's a scary place but it's a type of peace and harmony you feel that is unexplainable

A suburb is a smaller city or town that surrounds a major city. Suburban cities and towns can have high crime run down areas too.
Compton is a suburb. Sometimes the suburbs have higher violence rates than some cities.

I come from the metropolitan area of San Diego we got hoods but I'm glad I do not live in a hood I used too. I live an area where blacks are about 4to 5% of the population and latinos are about 50% whites are about nearly 35% asians and other are the remainder

The reason why it wasn't at the top of the list is because it's not a really huge city and I have videos from there already. There are many places the are much bigger and/or I haven't been to. I remember you sent some places to check out I will probably only get a chance to go by 3 or 4 of the areas.

Redlining which is basically banks charging people of color higher interest rates for houses and making them pay double for the house. The race tax which is self explanatory, whites would buy homes and own them and would sell them to blacks under a contract......and the blacks never owned the house because their name wasn't on the mortgage. Of course we all know about jim crow. Speaking on the deplorable condition of black communities I know folks dont care enough about us. I knew that area quite well, my grandparents lived in a nice two story house just 6 blocks South of that Methodist church he passed, a lot of good people took care of their homes and property and respected one another back then, 80s and 90s time frame
Lived in and near South suburbs all my life so ive been to all the worst places MANY times lmao , was just at Cal park, Cal city, and Dolton/Riverdale which i used to live there lmao def not the way it was before, all the goons from the torn down projects fucked it up since its a bit cheaper out here, id say Ford Heights, the Heights, uni park is aight its just ghetto, and pretty much any village bordering the city

I remember Cornett Village(aka "The Village") and it was practically "the projects". That pocket of apartments was really bad 15 years ago and was raided(and heavily patrolled by Harvey police), which played a huge role in its almost total abandonment.

Robbins is pretty sad. My best friend grew up there, just a really strange neighborhood with some random nice homes next to crack houses. That whole area is weird because there are bad neighborhoods but then they're right next to really nice ones like Blue Island or Orland Park.

Robbins used to be cool until they put those projects up there & although most of them are no longer standing, they still have that old one down the street from Lydia, the main dope spot around those buildings....I used to have some damned good times in Robbins though, close to 40 years ago.
Austin and Oak Park is a good example. But Austin is getting better at least. I used to teach basic computer programming to high school kids in an after school program. Never really felt unsafe to be honest.

Typical south side neighborhood - commercial stretch looks ghetto, single family homes modest but well kept, rental property some good and some bad.
My south side Ashburn neighborhood was like that when I was growing up, even though it was mostly built in the 50s-60 and I grew up in the 60s-70s. Some of those houses in the video look exactly like the houses when I grew up.
It does look like parts of Harvey could use some cleaning up.
Ashburn used to be so much more lively when the Ford City Mall was still popular. After my family moved to Burbank they used to be there every nearly day.

Man my mom worked security for the YMCA in Harvey back in the the 90s My brother and I went to summer camp at the Y for years I learned how to swim and roller skate going to the Y. Use to hang out heavily in Harvey especially on Page Ave my cousins lived over there and when I got older I use to hang out on Lexington
