sick, never thought of doing thickness this way. I ended up tanking with hair density, so high my marmoset would be dying on rendering. Gotta try this method, thanks!
What happens to the UVs once you add thickness to the hair in zbrush? Doesn't that operation create new polygons and therefore you would have unwrap UVs again?

It creates new polygons, but also creates overlapping uv's. No need to unwrap again
