Imagine living all the way up in Alaska, and stumbling upon Scott checking out your local cemetery lol
I wish there were a community committee that would maintain these beautiful cemeteries 💕💕💕 great video
I don’t think it’s meant to be maintained. I read that they believe the spirit lives on for a year and so they build it a temporary house to stay in. As the house disintegrates and goes back to the earth, the spirit leaves and moves on.
@@Shazzadut1 Thank you, I understand it better now. I know every culture has a different way. I prefer cremation.
The BEST storyteller UA-cam .
100%
In northern Wisconsin on the reservations, they have spirit houses on the Graves. When the house decays and falls apart means the spirit has moved on
Very cool Mr nibbles. I would love to see those. My Sweetie lived in Wisconsin and he said that many have lil replicas of their homes in their yard. Wonder if that's sorta like that or the reason. Blessings from SC❤
Chippewa Indians?
Oh wow never heard of that
Cool beans. My sister lived in Anchorage for a few years. She loved it there. She actually drove from an island off the coast of Maine to Alaska with her 2 cats, one diabetic and the other 16 years old. Talk about an adventure. Anyway she moved back to Maine a couple of years ago but she flew this time. I never got to visit her in Alaska. I'd love to go someday.
I would love to talk to your sister in Maine! What an adventure. Hope she is happily settled in the first state I ever learned of in school, and have had a soft spot for ever since. Best wishes from Australia.
So sad this iconic cemetary has been let to fall in such disrepair! What a horrible shame!
Exactly, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
It’s meant to be like that. These people believe that when a person dies its spirit stays on earth for a year, so they build it a temporary house. As the house disintegrates and goes back to the earth the spirit moves on. Do some research. It’s not a Christian American burial place!
I know nothing about Russian Orthodox churches but Ive seen numerous native American cemeteries with these little houses...same as this in the lower 48.
They have the spirit houses in First Nations cemeteries too in Minnesota and other states.
Really! I'm a native Arizona and never seen this on any of our Rez's and I've been to all of them.
@@pismorichy Im in Michigan and in the upper peninsula Ive seen a few small cemeteries with them. quite different!
That is an Orthodox practice, protective coverings or roofs over the graves. I have a similar graveyard and Ruthenian Orthodox church near me.
I saw a native cemetery on another channel,it’s in Washington state & 1/2 from cremation and 1/2 like this with houses or fancy gravestones but all with colors a beautiful cemetery.
Fascinating video. Thanks for taking us along.
This is quite amazing if you hadn’t gone to Alaska and shared this with us, I would’ve never known anything about it. Thank you.
What a beautiful cemetery, I love that it is colorful, thank you for taking us along. Have a great visit with your sister!
The coloured spirit houses are the family colour.
Very cool! We lived in Fairbanks for 15 years and are happy to be living in Las Vegas now! Coldest temp -55 to the hottest temperature of 120. The rabid mosquitoes are out 24/7 during the summer. We had a mosquito eater in our yard. If you haven’t been already, go to Sitka. I have several Alaska videos on my channel.
Very cool
Natalie Zacharenko has one of those crosses on her headstone. Everyone knows her better as the late Natalie Wood. ❤
From what I've read, Natalie's family came from Russia, so they were probably Russian Orthodox. Thanks for mentioning this, probably the reason for that cross.
Fascinating! Thanks for sharing, Scott and Troy!
I love this custom. So thoughtful. I went to a Russian Orthodox Wedding once in Southern California. It was the most elaborate church and wedding I have ever seen. It's great to save old buildings. I live in a historic town, Whittier, and it's great.
I think that once they collapse that they don't fix them as it's believed that the soul has departed
Fascinating!
I think the doors are for making offerings to the spirit (alcohol, cigarettes' or something) They don't upkeep them because once the house is deteriorated, the spirit is et free. If they kept upkeeping, the spirit would never leave. At least that is my understanding. Nice video.
Thank goodness someone else did some research on this before making stupid comments! Absolutely correct. The house is meant to deteriorate back to the earth. It’s not meant to be maintained.
@@Shazzadut1 I enjoy all cemeteries. Because I do, I end up learning things I might otherwise not know. We can't blame anyone for not knowing what is not taught. So, I try to teach. Peace and love.
Excellent! Thank you Scott!
That’s really Cool Scott always appreciate you and Troy taking us on your adventures and sharing your stories. I hope you get your museum up and running again one day I missed out on visiting when you were open in Hollywood before.
Aren’t there a bunch of those kind of crosses in Hollywood Forever? Over by Cecil B DeMille . Very interesting Scott and Troy. You never cease to surprise. Thanks for sharing.
So much history and beauty. Thank you, Scott and I presume Troy is there as well, so thank you, Troy. What a fabulous place in Alaska.
I’ve never seen anything like this. Fascinating!
You’re in alaska ?? YAY!!
People forget the United States is much closer to Russia than it is to Europe!
One of the reasons the Russian Orthodox Church and Cemeteries are such a frequent site in Alaska.
Alaska
Also because Russia owned it at one time. The Episcopal church went up there in the early mid 20th century
Russia owned Alaska. That’s how Russians were living there!
I'm from Anchorage Alaska and where your at I use to work there as a tour guide back in 2001... . Great Memories watching this!! 😊
What city is this? He only says 30 miles out of alaska. I have a cabin two hours out of anchorage in a super remote and haunted spot I’m sure he would like to see but I ain’t saying the town name. Keep it mysterious I guess 😂
@@whatsboredom9133 It starts with a E and it's a 20 minute drive from Anchorage heading towards wasilla!! 😁
Considering the weight of snow and ice that accumulates there, they have held up remarkably well!
Never have I EVER! Thank you.
Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it so much.
Have a wonderful visit with your sister Scott, and stay safe. I remember seeing this type of spirit house in a video and I think they were in Tennessee of all places!
How wonderful. Thanks for taking us there Scott.
happy to see you and Troy are enjoying some cooler weather in Alaska. Must be nice to escape from those PS temps. July is hot but August is brutal.
Oh Wow. I been there. When I was a teenager with my family stationed at Elmendorf AFB in 1965. Wow!!!!!! There were old children's toys in those little grave houses.
I was in anchorage a few years back and visited this graveyard. I too found it fascinating.
My husband and I loved the Alaska church with the sweetest cemetery ever thank you for sharing your trip with all of us
Scott, thanks for sharing this fascinating place! I did a little googling, because I was curious why some of the spirit houses are not maintained. Evidently part of the spiritual belief is reciprocity with nature. The spirit houses are not maintained and then eventually become part of nature again. I did not explain that very well, but you can get the gist.
that was a cool tour of that place I hope you can do more videos like this. so cool how so many of those folks were buried in little houses.
Thanks for sharing. Ive never seen such a thing! 💛
What a beautiful place
Spirit Houses are also a native tradition in Wisconsin as well
Fascinating! Thank you for another great video!
It is so very lovingly kept up.
How unique for a grave yard ! And the blue house with the dark roof and the blanket showing ! That blanket is by the Hudson’s Bay company made from wool . I have my moms Hudson Bay blankets , depending on size they are worth well over 500.00 and more . Alaska is such a fascinating state . Are the mosquitos 🦟 big enough to pick you guys up and fly off with you ?😅
I would imagine the bodies are buried deep enough so the wild animals there like bears, wolves , coyotes , cougars and others won’t scavenge on them .
Hope you do some more vlogs from Alaska . Many old mines and ghost towns around . Thank you for taking us with you .
HEY,.. SCOTT & TROY That's cool Your visiting your Sister How she End up in Alaska ?? Ya That's a different Burial practice It's Very beautiful And They are all Different for Each Person Well Ok Scott Thanks for Taking Time out Of your trip And Showing us this Cemetery OK Take care and Stay safe
There's a certain air of mysticism with this old graveyard. Very sad. Love your videos. Enjoy your visit.
Quite different from "Forest Lawn" or "Hollywood Forever" to say the least!
Thank you for sharing this video.
You can wear a nice layer of Vicks -- mosquitoes hate the smell --
Very interesting graveyard. My faves were the ones with the curtains & the one with the 'stuff' inside. But I'm not far into the video.
Hope you had a very nice & safe time while visiting your relatives.
Oh wow. I live in the tropics, Darwin Australia and you are the only person, not from here, that says to use Vicks for mozzies! We tell everyone that but they keep spending money on repellents.
So cool!
pretty cool vid. Thanks for sharing with us.
Absolutely fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. It's very interesting.
Even in the rain, Scott brings us very interesting places. Thank you, I appreciate it.
Hi Troy & Scott!
Very educational & interesting. Thank you also for the sacrifices to show us something A lot of us will never get to see!
Thanks for the tour
WOW Scott, getting all those bites for the sake of this cool video, thank you
Love your videos
Wow so i researched the rosenberg family and it seems gilbert was originally from new york city and Dorothy was native american alaskan. Theres an article online where it explains that a DNA test linked her as descended from a frozen man found in british Columbia estimated to have died some 300 years ago. Pretty fascinating.
We can hear them through the camera...
Thanks for sharing this. I've seen photos of grave houses like these. I think they're a native custom
I think Ron from faces of the forgotten was there, he mad into spirit houses
Hi from Queensland, Australia. Gosh, what an interesting burial ground, thank you for sharing.
so fascinating! Thanks for really providing such interesting content!!
Very interesting. Thank you.
what a curious little place
I HATE mosquitoes!! I would have turned back earlier 😂😂 Very interesting - thanks for sharing 👍👍
Oh wow this is awesome Scott I hope you and Troy are doing well in Alaska and having a good time and let's check out the cemetery 🪦🪦 safe travels
Great video and very interesting cemetery!! I've never seen anything like this, and it seems to show their respect to their family members.
Wow! TY Scott and Troy for sharing!
Interesting video Thank you for sharing this
I knew Troy had to be with you, I hadn’t heard him talk in the other videos, I’m glad to know you didn’t leave him at home alone.
I adore both of you.
Thank you guys. That was cool.
Cutest Cemetery Ever☦️
Avec un très mignon petit écureuil comme gardien 😊
You are a good man Scott. You'll never know what comes along our way in life but if I ever get the chance to visit LA all the way from The Netherlands for sure I will visit you for a tour. Thx Scott for what you do those have departed and sharing your interests with us.
I've seen videos of cemeteries in Mexico with the spirit houses. Very cool place! Thank you for the journey to Alaska 😊
this is a common practice among the northern Indigenous people of Canada as well.
Thank you for this. I drive the highway past here every day that i drive to work and never stopped. Knik is pronounced using the first K, its Ka-nik. Be careful of moose and even bear, they can be anywhere. Have a great trip. Hopefully you can catch the air show this weekend at JBER.
I cannot believe that Bullwinkle's grave was not described.
Fascinating! 😊
Eklutna is a beautiful area, the water Anchorage enjoys drinking comes from the reservoir at Eklutna Glacier. The water was delicious, at least it was until I moved back to Texas in 2006. It was ice cold, frosted the faucet even in July. You should go down to Homer, there are more Russian churches.
I see a Hudsons Bay blanket on one of the graves, they are expensive. Someone was loved.
Thanks Scott
Very interesting and unique. Thanks!
Im can't believe this! My favorites is when you looked in the window with the raindrops on the window; so realistic! Thx for the tour!😮 Wonder why they don't take care of the cemetery 😮.
Very cool place. Love the one where the husband and wife etched in the headstone.
This is very interesting. Thank you for sharing,
Cemeteries are set alone. Graveyards are attached to a church. I think of “yard “ as one’s back or front yard. It helps me remember.
Love the videos
thank you for this upload, very interesting. i love seeing things, i'll never be able to visit myself. stay safe and well both.
Mosquitoes love rain and water. They lay their eggs in it! lol.
This is a very good video. Unlike anything you've ever done. Not to say your other videos aren't good.
The colors me a little of Howard Finster's Paradise Garden. Thank you for sharing this sacred art (as he would have called it).
Absolutely charming!
How very curious and interesting! I love it!
Awwwwwwe;
thank you for sharing a steady-handed camera look at the happy cutie-pie, 🥰
until scampering away.
( 🐿 at 19:45 , and joyful mosquitos, everywhere 😆 )
❤ Alaska;
every mile is supremely delightful❣️
Very fascinating! ❤
Thanks for sharing…!
Sometimes an opening or open space is left for the spirit to leave the site. and the ones that are fallen are the older graves
As the house disintegrates back to the earth the spirit moves on. It’s not supposed to be maintained like a Christian or Catholic cemetery.
We have a Russian Orthodox Church here in my small town but no graveyard attached though. How interesting. It’s actually used for a community center I believe now since there aren’t any of the members left.
Google Earth has pinpoint..for compass action! Cool vid! thanks
Sad and beautiful!🙏
I love Alaska! 🥶
