It's very interesting. I play in a Megadeth tribute band so I've studied the styles of all the guitar players pretty closely (and wow they are ALL good). Dave is a great player and it's like he has that special quality to be a virtuoso player but I don't know if he has the personality to just sit there and devote the hours needed to achieve that. I'm not saying Dave isn't disciplined and that he didn't devote time to his craft, he clearly did. You really hear it in the songwriting. But personality wise, and uh, extra-curricular wise :) he's more the rockstar/frontman type. I don't see him as the guy that just sat in his room for hours on end putting in the endless and tedious repetition needed to become a super clean player. That's usually the other guitarist in Megadeth's role. Dave has the talent, but I think being the frontman, songwriter, singer, party animal just took to much of his focus. All good though! Megadeth are a one of a kind band, one of my favorites, and one of the truly great guitar bands in rock/metal. In fact I can't see how they are not in everyone's top 5 list for metal guitar bands.

he's like the jimmy page of fast shredders! a lot of it is on the sloppy side, but it still manages to enhance the quality of the song, and doesnt make you question his ability or technical skill as a guitarist. He thinks about the feel of the song before the cleanliness of each individual note and it works perfectly for the music!

In a lot of ways, he is the Jimmy Page of Western metal - 'Organized chaos'. Fairly sloppy soloing at times due to minimal emphasis on technique that works out just fine in the mix and surprisingly doesn't diminish his stature as a guitar hero. Shreddsville mayor or not, his rhythm playing on the other hand, is out of this world.

He got his first jackson after Peace Sells was recorded. There's an avid Jackson collector who documented this on jacksonguitarpalace.com, even with pics of the order form.
There's a massive change in guitar tone after Peace Sells, and having played a vintage BC Rich, I can confirm those are the way to go in order to get the sound from KimB and Peace Sells. Vintage Jacksons are amazing, but they don't bend towards that sound.

He did very well considering he had three things he was doing. Singing, rhythm, and lead. It's kinda like if you were doing brick laying all by yourself. You usually got one guy placing the brick, one guy spreading the mud, and another guy hoisting up bricks. Now if you had to do all three jobs your in for a hard days work. It takes work to be Dave.

I know Dave said he didn't like Kirk's solos but I find them to be pretty similar in the early albums. They both use the same pentatonic scale patterns, at least in the 80s. Kirk has devolved into Wah pedal abuse now though

To be fair I feel like Dave cleaned up the sloppiness in RIP.
And thinking about it I would kinda like to hear Poland cover these toget a smoother and cleaner version of these hahaha.

The reason you think Dave's solos are sloppy,Is because some are double tracked solos blended together in the studio.Your ears are playing tricks on you.It is actually impossible to play the same solo twice, exactly the same. But doing double tracked solos is indeed a very 70's tactic & is cool.Mustaine's style is more like Ace Frehley than Jimmy Paige.Poland is much like Jeff Beck, but is more based on a flat bar with index finger, because Chris poland can't bend his index finger.

If there ever was a rhythmic, song writing guitarist to attempt and do lead he's it. Lead "requires" a fluid approach with a focus on phrasing. Basically, he's old school before there was school...
I don't want to bring a Chuck Berry into this but honestly it's a similar thing.
Rhythmic leads with some attention to phrases. Basically lick or riff based leads. Dave's solos are hard to mimic but easy to understand. Usually.
