I am an artist and graphic designer, so I do love using my iPad Pro 10.5 for artwork, sketching and drawing. But definitely, it’s also a great tool for other non-drawing functions. All my note taking is done on my iPad in client meetings or for personal notes at work and freelancing at home. My personal favourite note taking app by far is Noteshelf 2. It has tons of features like custom color palettes, multiple pen sizes and highlighters. You can also create custom notebook covers, custom page backgrounds, PDF annotation, importing or pasting photos into a page and then resize and rotate for those images all the while being able to mark them up. You can export direct to Evernote or share to multiple platforms. Digital note taking has really changed the way I work. Good on you to point out that the Apple Pencil is not just for art.
You might have mentioned this if it’s the same as marking up. But I use it to pin point select text that highlighting for copy but I then hold down and drag and drop using the Apple Pencil makes it more accurate and easier when that’s your job to make invoices using the information on the table
Just got a Apple Pencil for Christmas. So glad I found this video. Most videos that I found on the Apple Pencil were for people who like to draw they didn’t have many videos that showed you how to use the Apple Pencil if you’re not an artist.
Second comment; I bought the iPad and the pencil, and Luma Fusion, but I never thought about using the pencil with LF until I saw your presentation. If it weren’t for people like yourself providing new insights, I would be wasting the potential of so many devices that could have made work a lot easier. Thanks again!
Great video! It seems that you are a natural for this Chris. I like how you explain the tech with clarity and you focus directly on your points without unnecessary distractions and such. More like this!(*subscribes*)
You could also use a 20-40$ pen that does everything the 100$ apple pencil does (you only don't get pressure sensitivity which is crucial for artists). Of course if you could afford the iPad pro/ iPad air then go for it, but if you're considering the cheaper iPad / iPad mini, then it makes no sense because you're paying a third of the tablet's price juste to get some fonctionalities that only artists use ! Not a surprise how apple makes so much money. They market their products so well, it make you believe you need it when you actually don't.
Bro he says “unless there were some type of magnetic connected between the two at 6:00 but little did he know the second gen pencil would have that. I wonder if they got the idea from him... conspiracy? Great video though. I’ve been looking for one like this because I’m not an artist and all the vids were about artists using it
Love your explanations! I bought the pencil and have never used it because I’m not an artist so I didn’t know what to use it for once I got it. Now I know several things I will use it for. I use notes a lot! 🙏
I use and love the UAG Smart Case for ipad pro. It has a nifty clip that securely holds the Apple Pencil. I’m never worried about losing it. Plus its a sturdy case without adding bulk or weight.
Good video Chris! Fellow non-artist but pencil evangelist here. A couple things I wanted to add...Nebo by myscript is $3 in the App Store and does hand writing conversion to text and is really well done. I haven’t typed an email in months, I just hand write them and convert in nebo. Also, anyone looking for a clip for the pencil (I carry mine in my pocket) can use the clip from a Pigma Micron pen...it fits perfectly.
Apple Pencil = no arthritis pain when taking notes. I am lucky to be able to hand write a single page without pain, yet take notes all day at work. Love it!
I use the Logitech "Slim Combo kit" it comes with a removable keyboard, but more importantly it has a holder for the Apple Pencil... The keyboards removable so your able to work with just the backer to the Slim Combo and that has the pencil holder on it... It's a great product... kind of pricey at 159.99 or something like that... but well worth it... for my new iPad Pro 2nd Generation! I also installed the iOS 11 pre-release software... it's pretty amazing what they have going on with iOS 11... I have the 3rd installment of the pre-release... haven't found any really big bugs... a couple, but nothing that's hurting my device! Cheers!!!
+Michael Grant thanks for watching! I was staying away from that keyboard case because of how big it made the iPad, I probably should just check it out though. However I really liked the 9.7 inch Logitech create keyboard case, that also had a build in pencil holder. I wish Logitech would get back to that design. For me I usually use the canopy keyboard case while at my desk, and a Smart Keyboard cover (because it’s so thin) when I travel. I agree that iOS 11 is pretty awesome! I installed it because I’m working on a pretty big video of it.
Thanks Christopher. Your channel is so down to earth and accessible to me. I'm not a power user, I'm not an artist, but I do want to understand how to get the most out of my iPad, especially for productivity.
Your the man. I have one on the way for iPad pro 9.6”. I have big hands and am really looking forward to being able to work apps with much more control. You use and speak of it like it’s second nature. Perfect. Lots to explore, hidden things that open a whole new way of doing things. Like this video, I’ll bet you surprised yourself, much more artistic than you thought.
Nice video. Very helpful. How do you carry the pencil in your laptop bag? Do you carry it in the loop on your ipad or do you have a case or something for it?
I'm a newbie, first time seeing your videos. I am literally between buying a 2018 iPad to a 12.9 IPro. I currently have an I Pad 2nd generation but desperately need more storage and 32g is not getting it. My only concern is will 128g be enough for me. Your video is awesome and honest. Thank you !
Great comprehensive video thanks. I've been using the 53 pencil due to my iPad Air not being compatible with the Apple Pencil. It's ok but not as good as the Apple Pencil. I'm trying to convince myself to upgrade the iPad ! Incidentally Kavaj do great leather iPad cases with Apple Pencil holders.
+Jason Hewitt I liked the 53 Pencil, but the system stuff that comes with the Apple Pencil is just to good to pass up. And you should definitely upgrade! Thank you for watching!
Great video. I also love my Apple Pencil for photo editing. It allows for really great precision and it just feels natural when you want to brighten specific areas of a photo, for example.
Thank you for a very interesting and useful video about the iPad pencil. I just purchased an iPad Pro NEW with the 2nd generation pencil and can hardly wait until next Wednesday for it to arrive. Your video will be a huge help to me when it comes. Thanks again and please make more of these terrific videos. You have a new subscriber.
also stylus's in general help people with dexterity issues, as it's easier to hold/ manipulate a pen/pencil, that to use ones clumsy fingers!, esp when accuracy is required, like typing numbers and passwords, or the screen navigation ( far too easy to tap or double tap with hands, or to swipe by accident!).
Thank you so much for this video. 👍 I don’t draw either, but I just bought an iPad Mini 5 and was wondering if it’d be worth it to buy the Apple Pencil to go with it - and with my iPad 9.7” 2018/6th gen - and this helped a lot. :)
Nice list. A big one for me is Astropad Studio. I use my iPad and Apple Pencil as a graphics tablet for doing my photo editing. Like you, I can't draw, but I do a ton of photo editing and the Pencil is so much nicer than the mouse.
Fantastic and very informative video from another non artist that owns the new iPad Pro and pencil. I can't wait for the iOS 11 to come out. Great work and keep up the amazing content!
Hi Chris, great video. As an application analyst, my clientele are in and around the the OR, which means I'm there quite a bit as well. I also have a ton of meetings every week. Handwritten notes with the Pencil are a godsend for me. I use the Notes Plus app and it's been nothing short of awesome for me. Also, if you're looking for a better holder for your pencil, especially on the go, check out the Dux series of cases by STM. They're about $60 on Amazon and well worth the money. There's a really snug side holder for the Pencil, and it easily accommodates a Smart Keyboard or cover. It's perfect for me since I take a lot of walking notes. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/STM-Shell-Sleek-Apple-Generation/dp/B0733TRLMK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1503973676&sr=8-3&keywords=stm+dux+case+for+ipad+pro+12.9
Excellent! i wasn't going to buy the pencil, but now i am. I'm an educator and there's always a meeting with note taking required... the problem is i usually forget my notebook or misplace it. I never misplace my ipad. Thanks!!!
Just a thought but when you mentioned the pencil rolling away it reminded me of why the pencils I prefer don’t roll away and are very tactile. I didn’t choose then but they don’t roll away. The Norris Staedtler B I think they where called. It was German and there should probably be a h in that spelling.
Enjoyed the video!I’m a non artist considering the pencil. A couple of questions : How does it function with a screen protector, I have an Otterbox Defender? If i have to loose the otterbox is there any protectors that work with the pencil? And finally, does the tip scratch the screen? Thanks!
Finally, a video i was looking for. I mean I understand that the Pencil is a wonderful gadget for artist and digital designers but finally I found a quick video to show me what I can do with the pencil a a non-artist :D. I actually wanted to use it for university to annotate slides and assignments in my courses, so I guess I won't regret the pencil arriving tomorrow. Thank you for your review and keep up the good work :D
Great points to bring up! Video was nice quality production too. I think even for the non-artist, there are some apps for coloring that stays in the lines. I’d say more of a stress relief or time killer, but still a nice feature.
You can also use it to look up words in languages that use different alphabets, like chinese characters or russian or whatever. You might be able to copy the letters with a pencil but not type them to look them up in a dictionary.
first of all, great video! Very clear explanation and subbed. I am currently deciding if I want to buy the Ipad pro 12.9 including the Apple pencil or a different tablet. Do you know if it is possible to use side by side view, so 2 apps, word and a pdf app and use the pencil to select a part of the pdf file and copy it directly to Word? So it looks a little bit like swiping a part of the pdf? It would help me a lot to decide.
Christopher Lawley Great video, informative too. Sorry to but in on this convo but I'm interested to know what OCR means. I have a Pro & pencil & I've started to use it in my business. can't wait to start using the new 'instant' note capability in IOS11, for me that's a genius move by Apple. My iPad will become a piece of paper in the blink of an eye, love it.
nice video! i use it for some games, puzzles, sometimes even on facebook, because it feels kind how better using the pencil. more interactive and cleaner
Very informative video, your issue at the end has been resolved with the new iPad that can hold the new apple pencil magnetically. Great work, helped me decide if I should get an apple pencil as a non artist or not.
+tesplain I still find it to be really buggy. If you rely on your iOS device in any way I would hold off. It will be out in September, though I totally understand not wanting to wait.
Hi Chris, Thanks for the very good quality Review on the Apple Pencil n I can't agree more that the storage of the pencil is a bugger since Apple did not think to provide a pen loop/magnetic connector ! You are clear to understand but in the future could you please activate Captions so I can watch your videos with subtitle n don't miss a word - Much appreciated.
Hi, I’m a new iPad Pro user, your video is useful. Do keep up the good work. I think we need more videos for non-artist users like ourselves. More practical videos.
Thanks for a great video, definitely one of the most informative videos I’ve watched! Your concentration on the content and information in the video was much more helpful compared to others who focus just on the the aesthetic of their video. Thanks for sharing great apps and accessories that help!
+Talik thank you! I really think all iPad Pro owners should get one, I understand the hesitation though it is expensive. I really love mine and I'm definitely not an artist.
I wish Apple would incorporate their OS X systemwide handwriting recognition utility called Ink into the iPad. If I could write and have the iPad convert it to text, that would be faster than typing for me.
Thanks. I know about the Nebo application. It's just that Apple makes strange decisions on what features they put into their products. For example, there is no calculator or weather applications in the iPad. If Apple is going to sell a Pencil, then it should not only work for drawing but it should also work for writing as well, converting handwriting into text systemwide built-in with no additional apps necessary.
MacMobile Services Try ‘MyScript - Stylus’ in the App Store. It replaces your standard on-screen keyboard with a line for writing and does amazing handwriting recognition that it converts to text in real time while you’re writing in any application. It’s really amazing.
Regarding the pencil power , I have a question for you or anyone reading. Seems the pencil looses its power rather quickly when stored, like in a few days. Even when it was new. I had heard that if you don’t disconnect it properly, it will, while in sleep mode still connect and use power. I routinely unpair mine before I store it in the slot/pocket of my cover/protective case. Any hits on what to do or it just the reality of the pencil. Tks Great video for us non artists. 👍
Chris, I'm addicted to the game "8 Ball Pool", which I currently play on my iPad Air 2. - I use my index finger to control aiming the cue and then again for adjusting the amount of spin and force needed for each shot. - Of course in time the screen will get dirty/sticky, making play much more difficult to be quick and precise. - In your opinion, would an iPad Pro/Pencil be a good option for me to consider? Thank You - RYR
+RollYourRock So I played four rounds, two with the pencil two with out, and the Apple Pencil does help! Aiming the cue is so much better with the Pencil. Plus you got me addicted to a new game! Lol Hope this helps!
If you ever feel like a game, reply with your Unique ID: xxx-xxx-xxx-x (available on your Player Profile page - top right) I can then list you as a friend and send a "challenge". Cheers!
thanks so much for the informative content. This video came up on my recommended list so know I'm a bit late. I have been using the pencil for quite some time. However, you did show me some things I hadn't realised for notes. The AHA moment came when you showed the pen loop. I have a spare one of these I've had for a couple of years so now I know exactly where its going! Those things are next to impossible to remove so like you, I don't like sticking things on my devices but this is the ONE exception. Thanks again. PS I hadn't seen the desk stand before so off to look for one.
Thank you for this video! I was just gifted an iPad and an Apple Pencil and like you I’m not really an artist, per say, I love some of your ideas for using the Apple Pencil thanks for your time and video.
I have a pen holder that goes on the smart keyboard case. Works nicely. So far I use the pencil in Affinity Photo. I tried to use it more when taking notes but I can just type way faster and it's much neater, kinda feels like writing notes with it, is just finding a reason to use the pencil, unless you write faster or better than you type. I do like to mark up screen shots and things like that, articles, etc in Evernote.
+nagol5178 do you have a link to the pen holder? For me handwriting notes just helps me write without distraction. Plus I just enjoy handwriting notes.
Yes, here is the link, it goes around the part of the Smart Keyboard that doesn't affect anything, like not the part where it folds out or anything, so I don't ever notice it. I do like to write handwritten for serious study but for me that goes to paper journals. I do like to use the pencil as a stylus because navigating the Ipad seems more fun with it than my fingers on a lot of apps. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MG3LJLY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Handwriting is better for absorbing the content, in case you're a student and stuff, or when you have to add graphics, draw tables and stuff like that on your notes.
Good video. One thing I have noticed about pencil is battery doesn't last. Seems each time I use it, its flat and requires me to pop it into the iPad for 30 seconds. Could I have a defective one?
Christopher Lawley Just found your video searching for Apple Pencil info. I'm not an artist either but was wondering if I should get the pencil anyway for my new 12.9 iPad Pro. You answered that question... absolutely! Thanks and subscribed.
One of the best information presentations I’ve seen. Clear, concise, and well spoken. Great job!
Great vid! I was trying to justify why I needed the pencil. Being able to fill in PDFs is a game changer! Thanks.
I am an artist and graphic designer, so I do love using my iPad Pro 10.5 for artwork, sketching and drawing.

Digital note taking has really changed the way I work. Good on you to point out that the Apple Pencil is not just for art.
Enjoyed your take on the pencil. I'm not a drawer either but wanted to try note taking
+Rodney Ochs Thank you!
You might have mentioned this if it’s the same as marking up. But I use it to pin point select text that highlighting for copy but I then hold down and drag and drop using the Apple Pencil makes it more accurate and easier when that’s your job to make invoices using the information on the table

I’m definitely no artist but I did figure there would be room for then pencil in my workflow. Thank you for watching!
U told all that I needed without drowning it in tech mumbo jumbo . Keep it up .
+sangamnath bentur thank you!!
After sitting through videos by airhead college students, your presentation was refreshing and informative. Fantastic and completely ego free.
CW CW I agree with you a very informative UA-cam
I'm something of an airhead college student myself but yeah the fresh perspective was cool
Second comment; I bought the iPad and the pencil, and Luma Fusion, but I never thought about using the pencil with LF until I saw your presentation. Ikr 🤔 I was thinking the same thing when he said that
Probably not. The Microsoft surface’s pen had been doing it for a while at the time.
David Hood, I know I’m just joking around, Apple thinks of things years in advance. Lol
Love your explanations! I bought the pencil and have never used it because I’m not an artist so I didn’t know what to use it for once I got it. Now I know several things I will use it for. I use notes a lot! 🙏
YES! Thank you! Finally someone making videos for non artists
Thank you for this video! Everything else is from the perspective of an artist, lol, which I am not. I really appreciated that perspective.
I use and love the UAG Smart Case for ipad pro. It has a nifty clip that securely holds the Apple Pencil. I’m never worried about losing it. Plus its a sturdy case without adding bulk or weight.

Speck has a case for the iPad that holds the Apple Pencil securely and is protected. The case has a wake feature when opened. Love my case.
This channel is a legend. He outperformed many channels with mills of subs but he has only a few thousands!!!!
Thanks for the clear and concise video! You got yourself a new subscriber!
Hi brilliant, really clear non geeky and informative! Did you find the link you mentioned whilst suggesting the pen loop?
Yes, I put a link to it in the description. Thank you for watching!
This is just what I needed. I am no artist and just got an ipdad and was wondering if I should get the pencil or not. Thank you.
This was super helpful. You’ve gotten past my ipencil intimidation. Thanks!
Just got my new Ipad and pencil - thank you for teaching me how to use it. I also do a lot of document editing and signing - no drawing. Good job.
Thank you very much! I’m glad I can help!
Your pencil stand looks like a mini plunger. LOVE THAT! ☺
+Idris Fashan yes it does. Lol
Precision and Intensity of pencil is crucial for its success!

How did I never think to use it to fill out PDFs?? Brilliant 😁
Thanks. I learned so much. Someday I hope to have an iPad and Apple pencil. Until then, it's fun to learn what they can do.
This is where Apple got their ideas for the Apple Pencil gen 2 😂 great vid man!

I have a case for my iPad that has a section to hold the pencil in it. Great video by the way, some great tips..

Peter Yung do u have to have the pro model to use the Apple Pencil
Really helpful points in a well-thought-out sequence. Love the tips at the end about storing your Apple Pencil.
Excellent! i wasn't going to buy the pencil, but now i am. I'm an educator and there's always a meeting with note taking required... the problem is i usually forget my notebook or misplace it. I never misplace my ipad. Thanks!!!
Awesome, I’m glad it helped!
Just a thought but when you mentioned the pencil rolling away it reminded me of why the pencils I prefer don’t roll away and are very tactile. I didn’t choose then but they don’t roll away. The Norris Staedtler B I think they where called. It was German and there should probably be a h in that spelling.
I like this guy - clear and no BS
thanks for the tips.. just bought a new pencil.. .can't wait to try it out...
hey, I think your channel is new and wow, very nice quality video. Keep going!!!
+Brook Mulugeta thank you!
Christopher Lawley, yeah keep up the great work! Very inspiring!!

It’s over a year later and it’s still a great video even though the new Apple Pencil is out. Thank you so much for your help!!!
Enjoyed the video!I’m a non artist considering the pencil. A couple of questions
: How does it function with a screen protector, I have an Otterbox Defender? If i have to loose the otterbox is there any protectors that work with the pencil? And finally, does the tip scratch the screen? Thanks!
Finally, a video i was looking for. I mean I understand that the Pencil is a wonderful gadget for artist and digital designers but finally I found a quick video to show me what I can do with the pencil a a non-artist :D. I actually wanted to use it for university to annotate slides and assignments in my courses, so I guess I won't regret the pencil arriving tomorrow. Thank you for your review and keep up the good work :D
+TheZorroZorro1 Awesome, I’m glad this helped. Thank you for watching!
Exactly the content I was looking for. Great video!
+Meskarune That’s very true and clever!
I like that iPad stand. Was that part of your case or a separate stand?
One of these would be so cool if I was still in school.. So far ahead of the palm PDAs I was using back then.
Just made my decision easier for me as I have iPad Pro 10.5 and use notes and lumafusion for my channel thank you.
+TechTalk Awesome, glad to hear it! Thank you for watching!
Great video, especially the last part about storage! You anticipated my thoughts with a nice wrap.
I like the video, straight forward and informative. Helped me make up my mind, thanks.
first of all, great video!
+Roger van Nassau with iOS 11 you will be able to do drag and drop, and as long as both apps support that and the PDF is OCR I don't see why not.
Christopher Lawley thank you for your response! I was wondering about it because on Windows it cant be done very easily.
+Roger van Nassau yep, as long as the PDF is OCR shouldn't be a problem.
That’s a really good usecase. I don’t play a ton of games on my iPad but I should start playing more. Thank you for watching!
I'll be using it for colouring in things to help my chronic anxiety, I am autistic and this will help.
+nikeeweston That’s an awesome use case! Thank you for watching!!
Very informative video, your issue at the end has been resolved with the new iPad that can hold the new apple pencil magnetically. Great work, helped me decide if I should get an apple pencil as a non artist or not.
Great video! Question. Is it worth it to install iOS 11 beta 5 on my iPad Pro? I haven’t heard of bugs on the iPad beta as much as the iphones.
+World- jaded thank you for watching! I have figuring out how to setting up captions on my todolist, but I will bump that up on the list.
Hi, I’m a new iPad Pro user, your video is useful. Do keep up the good work. I think we need more videos for non-artist users like ourselves. More practical videos.
Great video! Thanks for the pen loop tip! Ordered two.
Just got a I pad pro 12.9 today love it
+Clashingwithland AWESOME!!!!
Clashingwithland g
You should’ve bought iPad pro 9.7, i have it, and its great 👍 love it.
Thanks Christopher -- great video! Very helpful.
Thank you for watching!
Great tips!!! I definitely needed some of these.
Thanks for a great video, definitely one of the most informative videos I’ve watched! Your concentration on the content and information in the video was much more helpful compared to others who focus just on the the aesthetic of their video. Thanks for sharing great apps and accessories that help!
I appreciate this. I've been in love with the Apple Pencil for a while now but wasn't sure if I should get one because I'm not an artist
+Talik thank you! I really think all iPad Pro owners should get one, I understand the hesitation though it is expensive. I really love mine and I'm definitely not an artist.
Thanks so much for sharing! I am a non artist and just ordered the pencil by I have the iPad Pro
What kind of stand for the Ipad are you using here? Nice angle and seems solid.
I wish Apple would incorporate their OS X systemwide handwriting recognition utility called Ink into the iPad. If I could write and have the iPad convert it to text, that would be faster than typing for me.
+MacMobile Services that would be really cool!

At last. the right video for me. Thanks!
Great informative video...keep it up...just got my I pad pro 12.9 256gb...loving it
Regarding the pencil power , I have a question for you or anyone reading. Tks
Great video for us non artists.
+RollYourRock I'll download it tonight when I get home and report back!
Wow! - Thanks Chris, I couldn't ask for more! - BTW, this game is by MiniClip.
+RollYourRock So I played four rounds, two with the pencil two with out, and the Apple Pencil does help! Aiming the cue is so much better with the Pencil. Plus you got me addicted to a new game! Lol Hope this helps!
Yes Chris, that does help, thanks! - Sorry about the added addiction issue! 🤣 Cheers!
If you ever feel like a game, reply with your Unique ID: xxx-xxx-xxx-x (available on your Player Profile page - top right)
I can then list you as a friend and send a "challenge". Cheers!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Like the idea of the pencil loop too.
Thank you!
thanks so much for the informative content.
Fantastic review / tutorial of the Apple Pencil. Keep up the great work!
thank you!!
Cool features I didn't know about. Thanks!
this was exceedingly helpful, thank you for making!
Thank you for watching!
Hi Christopher, thanks for sharing this, it’s helpful.
Thank you for this video! I was just gifted an iPad and an Apple Pencil and like you I’m not really an artist, per say, I love some of your ideas for using the Apple Pencil thanks for your time and video.
Thanks, Babe! Absolutely marvelous presentation and great info. Please do lots more! 🙋

+nagol5178 cool, thank you!
Handwriting is better for absorbing the content, in case you're a student and stuff, or when you have to add graphics, draw tables and stuff like that on your notes.
+Victor L That is a really good way of putting it, thank you for watching!
Thanks for the great video! I was skeptical to buy the pen but I am so glad I did! Thank you!
Good video. One thing I have noticed about pencil is battery doesn't last. Seems each time I use it, its flat and requires me to pop it into the iPad for 30 seconds. Could I have a defective one?
Thank you for a great explanation, just discovered it and I’m glad particularly for a non computer literate mature guy, cheers
This video was great, Christopher! Thank you! I was curious, what kind of easel are you using for your iPad?
+finalorbit thank you for watching. I just use the twelve south book arc.
Christopher Lawley Just found your video searching for Apple Pencil info. I'm not an artist either but was wondering if I should get the pencil anyway for my new 12.9 iPad Pro. You answered that question... absolutely! Thanks and subscribed.
