This was the silliest thing. John went to get allies. Convinced the dragon queen to March with the largest army and three dragons. He also brought a mountain of dragon glass and smiths with him. From any POV his mission to bring help was a huge success.
For whatever reason I never noticed this, but the staccato stoic speech pattern became more pronounced in the last 3 seasons. Less words. They knew the cat was out of the bag with the book theories of R+L=J , and they found a way for him to mimic Sean Bean's speech pattern to bring it on home. That voice makes you want to tuck into a good book with a nice cup of cocoa.
I think what he did was right. But that doesn't mean he'll be rewarded for it. It's called a sacrifice. A parent doesn't ask permission to protect their children.
